whisper blocking system is /fail
flclisgreat
for about a week now i have been getting whispers from a gold selling site. i have never bought gold from this site or any other site. every time i log on i get a whisper, and about every 10-15 minutes after that till i quit playing. my ignore list is full of this gold sellers names now, and i am left to do absolutely nothing. every time i delete a name to add a new one, another name or one of the previous one just continues the spam. i can't (and shouldn't have to) go to DND or offline.
question. when you ignore someone does it ignore just that name or the whole account? i think it should ignore the whole account
we should definitely get a bigger ignore list imo. not just for what is happening to me, but because there is a huge group of retards/asshats out there.
anyone have any ideas as to how to make this stop?

It's not the the whisper blocking system is malfunctioning, it's that the likely reason is the gold seller has a large handful of accounts.

I have been pm'ed 30+ times and its always been different accounts. These gold sellers just have ridiculous ammounts of trials (probably..).

It's getting out of hand. All I have to say about it...

Hmm perhaps an automated script to get the trial key from guildwars.com. == a lot of keys. Ip ban I'd say. (Then there are still proxy's )
Qwertyfied
Happens to me a number of times per day, occasionally when they pm multiple times, i just stick them on ignore for a while. If my ignore list gets full, take one of them off, since they will (hopefully) have being banned by then. I dare say this works on the bot just pressing the tab key, and proceeding to pm everyone in the district. I may be wrong of course.

i am in kamadan d1 most of the day, either buying or selling something (so no offline/DND). its the same site, and i highly doubt they are not in kamadan d1 because i cant report them(which is /fail also)

A nice feature would be to be able to switch off all whispers unless they are either from the Guild/Alliance you are in, or on your friends list.
Also when I untick local chat why can I still see the chat text above the spammers character? Surely that's a bug.

This PMing bot thing is relatively new, and it's GOT TO STOP.
Wake up, Anet.

It's been happening to me a lot lately in Lions Arch. (American districts)
Not exactly game crippling, but it's pretty darn annoying. Hopefully they can get do something about this..

it ignores the whole account when you put someone on ignore , and yes the bot spamming is anoyying , i always report them tough
xiaotsu
Not true, I've reported people for verbal abuse after they've zoned out.
/report NAME it works, you don't have to have them selected. Try it.

I'm sure ANet is working on it. And I'm sure it's not as easy as adding a line that says "block bots from whispering" somewhere.

Those gibberish-named bots that PM you are trial accounts. They're free. Anet banning them doesn't help. The bot is a program larger than GW. It creates those gibberish names with a random gibberish name generator program. The program expects to be deleted and then reincarnate with a new name in about ten seconds.
And yes, WHOA this is getting to be a common occurrence.
There are solutions ie banning whispers/local/trade chat on trial accounts. Or limiting them somehow.

im not sure how they do it, but through some form of clever scripting you will now most likely get whisped the absolute instant you map to temple of balth. it happens in presearing too, and its allways from the same company.
guess when it first got really bad? thats right, the same day they took down the barriers between korean and US / euro districts. i had never once had it before then
i tried trading with one of the characters in an experiment and i was right, they use trial accounts. the only way i can see to stop this is to completely remove all 'buddy keys' and introduce a referal system where you can refer a friend via guildwars.com and they get a buddy key via email. if you refer accounts which consistently get /reported for spamming or botting, then your account gets banned too. they wont risk real accounts for spamming when they could be running farming bots instead.
edit* just read cebalrais response above mine. another possible solution would indeed be removing the ability to whisp, or possibly one of those catpcha (sp?) things you get when signing up on certain web sites to block automated registrations?

- I just can't believe the stupidity of ANET sometimes. What good is all their efforts to investigate and ban accounts for botting and spamming when they're giving unlimited access to expendable free accounts on their own site?
undeadgun
i ve got the same issue too>_> so many random gold seller PMs, can Anet do something about it?

I've also made a thread about goldspammers. Anet, do something!

We are very sorry about this, and I sent a comprehensive email today to other team members proposing various changes to try to put a stop to this problem. It is growing, and we're aware of it, and we'll do what we can to make it cease.
P.S. Count the bot population reduced by nearly 60, as of this post. *dusts hands*

i want to see Gaile/any A.Net employee in GToB id1 for more than 5 minutes. then we will see how many account get banned/changes made.
if they don't want to spend money/recourses on the banning, ill do it for free, just give me the power.

And yes, aapo, I understand what you're saying, hence my long email about the situation with trial accounts just today. I do think we'll see improvements in how we offer them, or how they function, in the future.

It's good of you to be tolerant, and yes, the promotions and the trials -- because of the accounts they encourage people to buy -- do help us sustain the business and fund both Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2. That said, we'll do a better job with them in the future, I'm sure. (Thanks again for your reasonable thinking.)
