Canthan New Year Approaches

Shing Jea Monastery is currently making preparations for the coming Canthan New Year's Festival! The festivities will commence at Noon PST (-8 GMT) on Friday, February 8, 2008. Try your luck at the re-opened Shing Jea Boardwalk, or test your mettle in the Rollerbeetle Races and the Dragon Arena. The culinary inclined can help collaborate in creating a feast to please the Celestial Rat. There's even more to do, and many special surprises, so head over to the special event page to get all the details of this annual celebration.

So it looks like we are getting a "Mini Rat" pet now instead of mini pig like last year, hehe, nice.

Rat is boring :| but it's something different so I'm looking forwards to it, might get some lucky/unlucky titles too.

I remember being at the in-game chat with Gaile where someone asked if they could make a title track for sparklers and fireworks. Gaile said she would ask if they could, it looks like Anet does listen to the community after all.

This was one of my favorite events, so I am looking forward to this.

I wonder if you can trade in dedicated mini pigs.

Hopefully this festival will go a little better than Wintersday. I'm looking forward to it, its the only festival in the game I've truely enjoyed.

Where's the chef ingredient list? Last year wasn't it posted it on the gw website? I really hope they're going to reuse last year's items, because it would suck if we don't find out the ingredients until the chefs arrive on friday.

My guess is that it will be post late Thursday or Friday at opening of event. I believe that is what they did last year. Also, once the event opens up, the ingredients are viewable per each "chef" NPC.

Do i spy red dye going up in price this weekend?

I remember wood (i think) having something similar last year.

Nah, you get red dye from a quest, pretty sure it's 'Knights of Nian'. Wood went up because it was for making fireworks. I guess since the party animal track is out, the fireworks-related crafting materials will go up, and maybe stay up, like feathers did when they became useful. Hope wood and dust and plant fibers and so on don't become 400g like feathers though :P

I'm guessing no. It did say it was for people who got two pigs last year, and if you already had one dedicated, you wouldn't be able to with the other one. But who knows.

I imagine the regular one we get will just be a normal rat, and the special one will be the celestial rat, that's shown at the bottom of the page?

Ugh ffs, I had at least 160 fireworks among other items that I just spammed away while at Shing Jea being bored. Way to go me...

Had about 2,00 to 3,000 saved up, didn't believe that this title was gonna happen, so got click happy about last weekend...Epic Fail on my part...

Same thing happen to me with the Sweet Tooth and had all these Red Bean cakes the first time...

Players are excited about today's announcement of the upcoming Canthan New Year Festival. You will note that we have extended the event to run through Noon Pacific time on Monday, so there's a bit of extra holiday joy to be had during this weekend celebration. Here are additional tidbits of information you might like to know:

* The Lion Mask (not the Dragon Mask, not the Tengu Mask) is the traditional headgear of the Canthan New Year. The mask will not change for the Canthan New Year Festival this year (or any other, I assume) because it is not the "end of event" gift. Unlike other festivals, the mask is something for you to acquire and enjoy during the festival.

* The Miniature Celestial Rat will be available only from Lunar Fortunes. You will not receive the miniature at the end of the event. (Naturally, you can trade for the mini.)

* The drop rate from the Lunar Fortunes has been increased over last year's Miniature Pig drop rate.

* The special reward for exchanging a number of Miniature Pigs from last year is only available through an exchange, it will not be given at the end of the event or through fortunes. (Naturally, you can trade for the mini.)

* Miniature Pigs accepted in trade my be dedicated or may be undedicated; that does not matter to the collector who is offering the trade.

* The quantity of Miniature Pigs needed to successfully complete a trade is named, by the Design Team, as, officially, "more than two and fewer than a dozen."

* This year, there is a new end-of-event gift that I think you'll enjoy. It's not quite like anything else in the game.

* Jade Wind Orbs are defunct and are no longer useful.

* Lunar Tokens are useful; they are the reward that you receive for the events and activities during the Canthan New Year Festival. You can also turn in Victory Tokens, as both collectors will be in place for the duration of the weekend, but the Lunar Tokens are this weekend's collectible item.

* Note: The Lunar Token Collector will close his shop and disappear for the year on Monday at Noon Pacific time. Please exchange your tokens before that time, or save them until next year.

* The Rollerbeetle Racing event will reward the top placers with special prizes. Speak to the NPCs to learn more.

* The festival "finale" will run throughout Sunday, Pacific time, from 12:01 AM until 11:59 PM Pacific time. Rollerbeetle Racing, Shing Jea Boardwalk, and other events will be in place another 12 hours, through Noon Pacific on Monday. However, the finale -- and the chance to score the end-of-event gift -- is available only on Sunday. (All times are -8 GMT.)

* In the meantime, I've been asked about the recipes, and I can't say if they have changed or have not changed, but I'd lean towards the latter. In that case, you can learn the recipes and get details on where to find the ingredients on the official wiki page for the Canthan New Year page from last year.

Ugh....seriously, obviously the same moron who came up with the mini polar bear thought this up. If this thing requires more than one mini pig to get....

I mean are they trying to make the events worse? Maybe we can lose more customers if the events are horrible, and then we don't have to make GW2....

whatever....this is dumb. I guess this year I'm going to be greedy and keep everything for myself, because obviously, thats the only way to get rewarded. Nice people always finish last.
