in game store, and why its not used.
flclisgreat
Anet wonders why people don't use the store? well it MIGHT have something to do with the fact that almost everything in the in game store cost MORE than at a real store. NF is $50 in store. $40 at real stores. proph+eye is $60 in game, $50 in real store. if you want people to use the in game store make the items cost AT LEAST the same as in a real store. i can order from newegg.com, with ~$5 shipping and still save ~$5 and don't even have to leave the house. figure you trade the box+random crap for bandwidth, it should at the very least cost the same amount, and in my opinion cost less than in a real store

No credit card here. Thats why.

I only used the store once and i'll never use it again.
I bought EOTN from the store the day it came out because:
1) Walmart didnt have it the day it came out. Staples did not either. I live in a town and dont have those video game stores.
2) I wanted BMP

I wonder how they got the character slots...

If they made prices lower than retail stores then why would retail stores wish to buy from them when player would just by directly from gw ?
Neo Nugget
I don't use it anymore because there really isn't anything for me to buy.
captain_carter
do ANet wonder this? I haven't seen that press release.
I will point out one good reason:
In-game store transactions are almost instantaneous. You don't have to wait 3-10 days for delivery nor do you have to leave the house.

The main reason for me that it is not used, is because of the payment options. Only few people own credit / debit cards in places other than America, making it impossible to make a purchase.
Rory The Warlord
I bought EotN from the in-game store because I couldn't find it in stores other than mixed with Prophecies. I prefer to buy my games in box from a retailer, but since everything is tied to an account in GW it doesn't matter if you have the actual disc in hand.
bsoltan
People still use it, it is useful for the people that can't get a game in a store or shipped to them. It is useful for those that want the game instantly and those that want the items you can't buy in stores (character slots, PvP Packs).
You're right though that the prices for the campaigns are cheaper elsewhere, and there aren't as many payment options as people would like.

I've bought everything except the original prophecies copy from online store.
Simply put, phoning around to see which store gets it first, driving there, and all the other tiny details take around an hour or so.
With that in mind, there is no price difference for me, it might be even cheaper to buy online. And besides, Getting to play a new chapter the minute it comes out - well, it's got some value for me.
Um... No, sorry, but people outside America don't live in mud houses and communicate via carrier pidgeons. Credit cards have long ago become the preferred payment method.
They may require one to be over 14/16/18 (depending on bank). Debit cards are generally trivial to obtain, but some of them cannot be used for online purchases.

I'd use it, higher prices and all, but I have no form of electronic payment.

I use it to buy character slots, bought EotN via it too (wanted the BMP), but the fair lack of CONTENT is the reason why I don't use it. And even there, if they added new content I didn't want, I wouldn't use it anyways.
Lord Darksoul
They'd probably make more money selling in-game gold than anything they have at the store. Unlock packs are over-priced, character slots are decent, but i never need too many (only had to buy 1). There's nothing REALLY cool and important for the average gamer.
Uber Mass
prices are the same when its new... I buy it when its new so doesnt matter for me if i buy it in the store or on online store
EPO Bot
No credit card here because credit cards = faustian bargain with the spending devil
Sir Owns Alot EP
The prices are on the extreme high end when put in comparison to the prices I got the games for.
Prophecies - $20
Factions $50
Nightfall $25
EoTN - $35
Not to mention I have issues trusting online stores, especially ones in a video game.

I use the online store for extra character slots but that is all.
Would I buy the game there answer no not unless the online version was considerably cheaper than from a store.
The collectors editions of the games always come with extras too which is nice.
Take Nightfall CE it was cheaper than the online store and was delivered on the afternoon of the release date.
I already had the prerelease bonus pack so it was installed a week before release and just needed the new code.
In the box were 3 disks
Game, soundtrack and the making of NF disks
Game map
Keycode chart listing keys emotes and explaining skill ranges etc
cutout figure of the main baddie of NF
Nightfall art book
Nightfall manuscripts book with lots of usefull game info
Skill pin "vow of silence"
I got all that cheaper than a screen with a line of code on it.
Sorry but just as electronic books are cheaper than real books electronic downloads of games have to be cheaper than the boxed version.
I guess they don't do it because they have a deal with the game stores who advertise and sell their games and who wouldn't like being undercut.
Must be some room for a compromise though.

well i fairly recently got into GW, so the CE's where never an option for me. but for second/third accounts i would like to be able to get direct from the in game store. just cant bring myself to spend more for less

The OP is right on target.
ANet can easily sell product online for the same price as a retail store and make more money per online unit sold than they do off units sold through bricks-and-mortar, or through e-tailers such as Newegg.
The cost savings are straightforward:
1) No packaging. That costs a couple bucks.
2) No middleman. The manufacturer sells the game to the retailer for considerably less than the retailer sells it to you.
3) No shipping. Related to #2; either the manufacturer or the retailer has to pay this cost in some way, shape or form.
The purpose of the online store (in theory) is to sell the game directly to you in order to capture the full surplus. You buy from the online store because it's more convenient than driving to the retailer to pay the same price.
Charging more than retailers charge for the game in the online store is just misguided greed, in my judgment. However, this isn't the only software/hardware manufacturer to do so.

Not to mention that Australians pay almost 4 times as much because we're ridiculously charged in British Pounds which makes our currency worth next to nothing...Any price in the IGS, multiply it by three, and that's what Australian's are expected to pay. It's an absolutely disgusting ripoff.
Thorondor Port
I agree with OP
I have purchased 4 slots from it, and eye of the north though.

I used the online store to buy the game of the year edition. Not sure how you can make the claim that it isn't being used. It's not like Anet are suffering because people would rather buy from a retailer, they still make profits from them. I doubt that there would be higher campaign sales, I like buying the booklet and the other little things that come with the box - that's personal preference. Other people have the same thing.
Stockholm
A-Net (NC-Soft) have to sell at the Recomended Retail Price (set by A-Net at time of release) they can not undersell the retailers or they open them selfs up for lawsuits from retailers. It is all covernd by trade laws.
The stores can sell for what ever price they want, (it's their loss) but they sell for less than wholesale after a certain time because storage cost money and goods have to be moved (sold).

If NCSoft reduces the MSRP or the online store price, it might be seen as undercutting and screwing over the retailers, who, on top of selling the games, also serve an intangible marketing role by displaying the game in their stores. Brick and mortar stores are more valuable to the manufacturer than online stores for this reason. Their greater overheads compared to online stores is also a reason that they should be more protected.
If NCSoft sells their online products at the same price or undercutting retailers, they'll not find any retailers to pick up their stuff ever again. The manufacturer's online store is usually a last resort retailer, for people who would otherwise have trouble buying the game, or like the Australians have complained, pay a ridiculous premium because of their importers.
NCSoft is simply not biting the hand that feeds them, and rightly so.
flclisgreat
good point. but then why the BMP? all the BMP was for was to promote online store use was it not? well lower the prices to match regular stores and i would glady buy from the in game store

because I've already have everything on the ingame store list...

I'll put it like this:
I would use the online store if there were either a Paypal, or Google Checkout button.

I have all the char slots I need.
As for buying products, well to put bluntly off the prices are a rip off. They do not apply the exchange rate from dollars to Pounds/Euros etc resulting in the price being even higher
There really is no excuse no to use the exchange rate used by the card issuer rather than either none at all or a one that is four years out of date.

Well, the reason I don't use the store is that I have already bought everything I want from the store...
Come Guild Wars 2, I fully expect to use the store. Except if some really good stuff arrives with the box (additional vides, soundtracks,...)

What can you buy from the store besides char slots anyways. Most people have the games already, and there is not much more for sale. And some poor kids do not have a credit card.
