How Would You Describe:
The Perfect Guild Leader
Part 1 of a Mutli-Part Questionaire....
What in your personal experienced opinion makes a great Guild Leader?
His poise as the commander, his experience in dealing with situations. His seemingly endless knowledge of GuildWars?
What is your ideal GuildWars Guild Leader profile?
Edit:1 Thankyou for the overwhelming responses.
2 This is just for everyone to express their opinion. Members, Officers, and Leaders all have different ideas on what a Leader should be. I'm just reading to see what the general concensus is.
3 Thanks for keeping this thread clean, the possitive, relevant responses are good
This is 1 of a series of question-threads. I am just constructing a list for people with time to read, so they can really admire their own qualities or learn what qualities they should strive for in order to be successful in the GuildWars Society.

His or her experience in dealing with situations. Another big one is treating all members fairly Just because you like someone more doesn't mean you should pick favourites all the time

One who kicks people for racism/insulting fellow guildies, instead of looking the other way...

There is no perfect guild leader, really. It's all based on how they can handle the pressure of the position, even if it's a game, to keep a big guild going, it takes a lot. As a guild leader myself, it's all about keeping your members happy. To be a great leader, you have to handle everything that comes your way with intelligence and make sure you understand every angle of the conflict. You have to be able to help, and know what you're talking about when there are questions. They have to be laid back, easy to talk to, have a sense of humor, and geniunely care about each person in the guild. I'm not saying they have to talk to you about all your personal problems..but they should ask questions of how each member wants the guild to be like. They should include everyone in the dealings of the guild. That's my idea of what a leader should be like, really.
[Morkai]
My Guild leader is female. And she always handles situations (though rare that any EVER occur) perfectly well by directly addressing the situation and dealing with it accordingly.
The Toe Tag
I like when Guild leaders don't start drama all the time about useless things.(could say more but ill be nice)
leeky baby
For a PVP guild has good experience in PVP, normally the caller - makes new builds, active and always trying to set up teams

I cannot stress activity enough. I know lots of people have lives, though being a Guild Leader is a fulltime commitment.
In all honesty, in lots of my guilds, the officers meet the above traits moreso than the leader, oh well.
What I always hated is that the officers are usually around more often and are a lot more casual - as such I tend to act nicer and make a better impression on them than on the person who really matters - the Guild Leader.
Leaders should be open to ideas and respect everyone. In my old PvE guild, the leader was probably one of the more age discriminate and disrespecting players...

Nah, I agree with Malice. They have to be able to handle things though, like e-drama. Don't want them to rage out of control and kick everyone or reform a guild 3 times. >.>

Heh haven't seen my guild leader in weeks. He plays late (Mexico), which is early morning for me (UK).

TheRaven
- mature
- active player
- Fairly knowledgable about Guild Wars. Doesn't have to be an expert in all areas though.
After that it depends on the guild. A guild leader should know why he started the guild and should outline the goals and/or purpose of the guild either in the login greeting message or on the guild's website.
A leader should also recruit only those players that will help the guild with it's goals.
If the guild has a set of rules, it is the leader's responsibility to insure that every member knows the rules and that they are reasonably enforced.
Every guild is different. Some welcome all players with open arms. Some are focused on establishing a reputation as a top pvp guild. Some just a small collection of real life friends.
If you want to be a guild leader then ask yourself why you are starting the guild. A kid that starts a guild just because he can is usually a poor leader and these guilds fall apart as soon as the kid realizes that spamming "New guild PLEASE JOIN. We have cool cape!!!!!!!" for 6 hours in Kamadan isn't going to get him many quality recruits.

- Humorous
- Doesn't play favorites
- Doesn't abandon his/her guildies to run off with friends on a regular basis
- Knows when to take action against something/someone, and knows how to carry it out
- Someone you wouldn't mind having a conversation with. A leader is not a figurehead who makes decisions, a leader should be someone who is easily likeable.
- Someone who knows that he/she and everyone else is only a human with many imperfections, and knows how to accept each individual for who they are.
- Preferably active and knows a good amount about the game
- Someone who keeps to his/her word

We live under the rule of the Empire....1 law (Racthoh)...2 boots! (Big ones too!)
OT..kinda-sorta:
A good guild leader knows the game is a game, knows the meta, and gets to know the people he has power over.
No need for QQ, personality conflicts and chit...HE thinks you F*ed up...your gone...and your little dog Toto too!

A perfect guild leader is one that would ask what my opinion is on the matter and involve me in any of the planning of activities

A good guild leader has to be in control and take the iniative!

A good leader is someone with a good overall experience, and someone who has a life... real life I mean... not someone who dedicates his life to GW or something... A funny person is always good... what else... someone who is always one step ahead of you! that's funny too... lawl

I think it does partly depend on the guild---I leader who only does pvp in a pve guild??? that wouldnt work.
though in general any leader should be mature, open to ideas, willing to LISTEN to said ideas, take others feelings into consideration...be able to make tough decisions and explain them to those who dont agree (you cant please all the people all the time).....
any leadership position has these requirements, I have been in such a position and can say that there are a bunch more---but I have been criticized for making long posts.

Other than the obvious like being a good, active, experienced player; I guess one of the most important qualities in a GL is his/her ability to deal with events and drama aka his Leadership qualities.
In general successful guilds usually have good leaders, this is not a generalization just an observation.

Racthoh is a super moderator on Guru and guild leader of Scars Meadows [SMS]. He founded SMS a long time ago. And ya as Malice said he is a Pro PvE'r.

Me.
Drains all his money on his lovely guild members.
Ratcock seemed a nice person but I only played a few times with him and that's already pre-Nightfall ago.

The perfect guild leader...
No one can ever achieve such a status. At one point or another, a guild leader will:
-kick someone for proving him/her wrong
-be not active for a month and leave officers in charge
-let their friends become officers just when they've joined
-allow members to spam like crazy for his/her entertainment
-kick people because he/she is bored
-start a fight and then prove he won by kicking them out
(All of which has occurred for me at some point in time...)
If you want a perfect guild leader, make your own guild and become the leader. Just don't give people a reason to hate you or consider you one lousy leader.

A leader's legitimacy can actually be seen nicely in their selection of officers.
Our current leader isn't as inactive as his officers are, but the officers in TAM are really good. Despite Silly's inactivity at times, his selection of officers shows that he knows something about running the guild.

- Active as much as his/her real life allows.
- Has clear, defined goals for the guild.
- Resolves conflicts as soon as possible in the best way. (at the time, though hindsight may say otherwise)
- Involves his/her members/officers in decision-making. (defining goals, planning events, etc.)
- Never assumes a dictator role.
- Has a great working knowledge of the game. (bonus points for knowing an excessively large amount)
- Keeps emotions under control. (most of the time, nobody's perfect)
- Knows a lot about his/her members in the guild. (real life, in-game personal goals, preferences, etc.)
I'm fast approaching over a year of leading my guild, and I'm yet to do any of those...

If you're a leader, play with your members. Get to know them and how they play, help them improve. Don't go on power trips. Choose your officers respectively and appoint one as temporary leader if you have to go for a long while. And sometimes, you'll have to stop being the friend and be the leader, the one who makes decisions (suggestion: consult your officers!). You won't be perfect, but you'll have a good leadership =].
