When was Guild Wars the best?
bel unbreakable
still enjoying gw i like my titles but i think ppl forget and look at the past through rose tinted glasses but really who can for get the days before heros when it took an hour to make a party only for it to leave 10 mins in to mission
or you cant join your not part of the holy trinity theres little or no diference to what we got now only real difference i have noticed for sure is the bile that now comes from the pvp/pve crowd i know a lot of ppl wont agree but i think that little issue is all down to having every thing unlocked

It was fun until I learned how to play, while everyone else remained bad. Because then it makes pugging annoying
Age
Guild Wars was best actually in beta as skill balances happened randomly and there was total UAX.I will say it was best back in 05 and early part of 06 summer maybe.
Hyper.nl
Right now. Guild Wars has never been better. There is now more content, more titles, more to do and more to explore than ever. And ovet time many bugs have been fixed.
The rest can be brought back to player experience.

hm, the time I liked best----when sorrows furnace came out..and we hoped that all of the 'expansions' would be just like it--free and with great stuff attached. I remember getting my first green items, I was like WOW a green item.....and then doing runs with firestorm....then the next week they nerfed firestorm and all the eles changed to water----
ah those were the days my friends.......

imo Pre-HM NF was the best time. there was the most to do
the guild ladder didn't consist of mostly dead/bought guilds (you also had to have a partially decent rating to be on it.)
FoW was still leet and only rich peeps had it, lol @650k fow >.<
Bambi was almost special
now..why isnt now the best....
everything.. dead ladder, r/d's with tigers, nubs with big titles (thanks UB >.<). nothings worth anything anymore.
Heroes damaged the game because now you don't have to pug everything, you don't have to work around all your teammates' inadequacies. Whole sense of pve kinda dead...not really a co-op game anymore unless you try really hard to make it one.
and we all know why UB has damaged the game...

I would say during 2005-2006, but only because the game was new for me and very exciting.
EPO Bot
Right now. Because it never had more content and options.
The player base got a little whiny tough.

We just had a new campaign come out, GW seemed like it had hit its stride, and I personally was wondering whether the next campaign would be a Meso-American or a Native-North American theme. GW hadn't ended, there was something new on the horizon in six months, and the only titles were fun ones that didn't affect gameplay... much. |

Before Factions came out was the best and I'm stunned there is even debate about this. Some people must not have played that long. GW of today doesn't even compare to GW of old.

I think Guild Wars was the best when it was just Prophecies, without titles, rep grinds, heroes. People played for fun. People developed original builds. People didn't strictly use PvX wiki only builds. People were friendlier. People would take time to explain things to new players. People grouped together. Those were the good old days.... |

Gw was the best when:
Black dye was 9k
sup vigor was 80-120k
seeing a lvl 20 was like "wow"
HoD swords were the thang
you could make really funky mixes with dye remover

Before the real PvP tournaments ended.

Golden age of "really awesome" guildwars started about when respecing was made free and ended few months after Factions release imho.
Zaganher Deathbane
I think now is better than before IMO. There are lots of things to do now. Be it title grind or just playing with your friends. And HM, the best thing that happened to GW so far
cebalrai
Any time until the implementation of Ursan Blessing was the best.
-Loki-
Right up to the end of the GWFC.

late 2005-early 2006 i would say.

Guild wars was best - tomorrow.
Anet has continuously improved the game. The only problem is that it's a bloody old game, so the community has shrunk a bit. But for a game of that age, it's doing extremely well.

2005-2006 Easily imo.

For me: Porphecies + the first few weeks of Factions....
BlackSephir
Before Nightfall.
JR
Before Factions.
timely healing
guildwars was the best for me when armor from buffs was allowed to stack. now all the creativity is mostly taken away from alot of builds. instead of no stacking at all incorporate like how everquest does it. certain buffs can't stack with each other, that way its not to overpowering. they could also inscrease the cap on armor buff allowing two or more buffs to stack limiting them to say 125armor. it will make the game easier by far, but not everyone enjoys a challenge all the time
Ekelon
Before assassins got truly nerfed (Summer of '07, and you can guess why).
big papi
before factions gw was a truly great game
shame that is no longer the case

Guild Wars was the best during its first year. Everything was fun and new back then.

some of you oh godddddd will you give it a rest - moan moan moan gw was ruined on such and such release, anet added such and such features...
Would you really expect gw prophecies to sirvive until today with out the others? You obviously still play it so why do you insist on saying its turned into a terrible game
EDIT: back to the original question...same as the above, nice simple answer

My best experience with Guild Wars was when it was just Prophecies. Most people relied on each other to help them get through the game, I never saw "Ping your build" or "kick him! hes a noob". It was just about having fun and completing the game with whoever would help you.
There have been improvements (skills, heroes, titles, expansions) that keep some people wanting to play just a little longer but overall the game has lost the original luster.
Factions was fun for the first few weeks, watching the new dances and trying out skills, however you realize that Assassins are not an expansion on Warriors and you can't really charge in head on.

Been playing for 3 years and the game is at its best right now.
1. Farming Code being removed/decreased. I can still remember farming and drops steadily getting worse until you came out of the troll cave or UW with a bunch of whites. Since everything dropped something you really had a bunch of stuff to merch.
2. Player base has been decreasing with spikes when Factions and Nightfall released so hero's was a great way for a couple to have a good team (NO MORE PUGS).
3. Lack of variety in skins. Flameberge and Fellblade were your two choices for swords and finding ones with a decent stat was impossible. Pretty much s.o.l. if you wanted to play with something besides crafter / collector weapons.
4. Gold drops could result in crap and if it had a good mod getting it off was nearly impossible. Turned several superior vigor into tanned hides. Now with perfect salavage kits, get the mod and keep the item.
5. Lack of storage. I remember sharing one storage slot space amongst four characters and no material storage. Mules were essential just to hold material and runes for armor.
It would take a while to list all the improvements but to me game has gotten better. Economy may have gotten worse for the power traders but to me cheap perfect weapons are just fine. I could care less about the rarity of weapons since I get the weapons I want based on what I think they look like.

Before the community became filled with 9 yrs old braggin' Leroys, that is, before Factions.
The game in itself is fine. It overall (I emphasize overall) improved as time passed.

Ursan made other professions basically obsolete in PvE.

Before Factions. 2005-2006 easily was the best.

Back when I was a newbie.

The build ping is the worst thing ever added to the game. Well, maybe the top 5 anyway. Discouraged PuGs AND encourage wiki build abuse.
I think honestly, its all up to opinion as to when the golden age was.
I think, the golden age was the first year. Not for the reasons others here say, but for the fact that when GW was released, it was unlike any other MMO out there. Even the debate of exactly what kind of game it is still lingers. Those of us who started in those early days and kept playing through the first year proved that something different CAN work in this industry. GW is (was) an oddball in a world of game clones and those who play it make it a success, so, the golden age continues until the day GW becomes WoW_Wars. Which every other MMO out there is basically another effing WoW.. LOTRO. yea. Try the week free tiral for a week of wasted time.

Prophecies by far was the best. No loot scaling, no issues with bots, no repetitive dungeon runs, Tomb and Sorrows Furnace was always a viable option for people to make money, you leveled as you progressed through the game instead of leaving noob island at almost 20 and no hard mode with overpowering pve skills.
Things I liked after Prophecies was heroes, alliance battles, the art work for factions and nightfall and the dervish class.
