Time Lapse Painting
Sab
So I decided to do a video of a quick painting if anybody's interested. It's mainly a test to see what goes into the process of recording, editing and uploading. This video is actually pretty tedious to watch near the end, I'll make the next video less jumpy (20fps and less panning/flipping). Any comments/suggestions are welcome =]

[Morkai]
Wow..that's pretty awesome tbh.
10/10 from me

The end result was enough to know watching the video was worth it. I love watching these things so it was all good to me.
I think the only thing to say is:
More! Please.
And does this mean your avatar is your own work?

Its awesome indeed, nice work!

Wonderful, though if you're looking for critique, the calf on the leg visible appears a wee bit wide, despite the compression. Also, the angle of the descending thigh relative to the hidden object the subject is straddling appears a bit awkward when given the ambiguous shadow cast over said object. It appears to have a bit of a corner about 2/3'rds the way up the thigh where the shadow pinches inwards, which very slightly hurts the composition. The nose appears a bit wide around the bridge and the crest of the nostrils appear slightly thick. Probably just stylistic elements though, tbh.
Overall excellent work, looking forward to future pieces ^_^

I see, thanks for the info.

Stunning, are you self taught? It's interesting to see how you manipulated the positionings in the picutre and also to see how flipping helps to draw different parts of the image.

What a pleasant surprise to see you're multi-talented. I already admire your ability to put game skills together. I'm very impressed. What program were you using? What kind of tablet did you use? I'd love to know the tools you used for the shading... like the shadows on the floor for instance.

For instance, looking at your ele (work in progress) I perceive the chin as too pointy. But then I know that's just my subjective view.
I don't perceive the nose as 'too' broad nor the calves 'too' big in Sab's painting. They could be the actual size and shape of the model's features. Actually, my calves (built from swimming) are about that size... just more cut up.
Besides all that, 'perfection' is antithetical to artistic expression. Thankfully, this artist didn't strive for perfect.

Gorgeous, imo. Her expression and body language are just excellent.
Sab, have you ever used the freeware version of Open Canvas? It's really basic and only has a couple of brushes, and you can only draw at 72 dpi.. but it does have layers with additive and subtractive and a marvellous playback feature that captures everything you do as an event file that you can play back.
Anyone else who has the programme can play it back too. You can also do collaborative drawings on a shared network on the same page.. which can be a little chaotic to say the least.
^ just thought I'd big it up as it's a good sketching tool.

I use Photoshop CS, Intuos3 6x8 Tablet. I don't use that many brushes when I'm doing B&W: a thin chalk brush for linework, a fat chalk brush + soft round brush for shading.

Thanks =DQuote:
That was my first thought as well.

The artist whose drawing is linked to in my first post was especially hard on himself. He was never 'there' in his own estimation. He was Vincent van Gogh

Ah I'm not trying to be negative, it's just a constructive thing, really. Please don't perceive me to be attacking, that's definitely not what I'm going for, I really love the piece. What kind of a tablet do you use (edit: oh nvm) and do you have any comments about its maintenance or durability btw? I've been shopping around and haven't really had much insight on these aspects and was curious about it >_>
Saraphim
If you want a tablet, there are serviceable cheap ones on the market, such as Trust. If you want a good one. Get a Wacom, they are easily the best out there, tablets are their only product so they've refined it to perfection. I had my original Intuos (back when they were serial connectors) for 7 years and I only got rid of it to replace it with an Intuos 3.
The one Sab mentions is ideal, it's small and doesn't get in the way. The bigger they are the more strain it is on your drawing hand / arm and movement is more natural on a smaller one. I'm using the same tablet with a 24 inch widescreen monitor and it's perfect. The only reason I may replace this one is that I have the hots for the new 12 inch Wacom cintiq so I can cart it around like a sketchbook with my laptop (price is a bit steep on that though). Sab
If you're serious about buying a good quality tablet, get an Intuos3 for sure, you'll know why when you try it. They range from 4x6 all the way to 12x19, but I'd suggest sticking with the smaller ones as well (4x6, 6x8 or 6x11).
Wacom also make low to mid range tablets, if you can live without the extra features and the halved pressure sensitivity. Have a look at the Bamboo and the Graphire line on their official site. In any case, Wacom makes it pretty clear they know what they're doing when it comes to tablets, so stick with their products and you can't go wrong. =] lakatz
Wacoms have come way down in price since I bought my ArtZ II 11-12 years ago. My 6x8 was $450 back then. It's around here someplace. It's just been so long since I've used it... I was using a a tablet notebook instead for awhile... I forgot where I put it.
Asplode
I was actually looking at something something like the cintiq, because I'm under the impression that a display upon which you can use your stylus would feel most natural, no?
Did you have any comments on the tablet's maintenance and durability, out of curiosity? >_> Widowmaker

Unless something has changed pretty much all the Wacom products have been, in both mine and friends’ experiences, as tough as old boots and have lasted longer than a carton of dog's milk.
Or, to put it another way, they last well and will put up with a lot of stick on the way. lakatz

Did you have any comments on the tablet's maintenance and durability, out of curiosity? >_> No maintenance required. You get extra nibs with the pen that you might have to change once in a great while... and that's about it. I'm looking at the Cintiq too. In fact, I've had a post card for the Cintiq 21UX on on my bulletin board as a sort of wish list since Siggraph at least two, maybe three years ago... whenever Wacom was in booth 919 at Siggraph anyway. I'm looking at the post card now, and I recognize the GUI in the picture as Maya which is my latest creative toy of choice, so I'm drooling considerably... and the Cintiq is holding up remarkably well against my drool. EDIT: Okay we have Wacom Intuos 3 (big ones) in all our edit bays, and I just asked a couple of our editors why they prefer Intuos over Cintiq (they can have whatever tools they want). Our starting aspect ratio on anything is 16x9, and so they all work across two monitors. They say the Intuos gives them more flexibility to do so than a Cintiq would. So bottom line... I guess it really depends on your application and needs whether an Intuos or a Cintiq would be better. Sab
Cintiqs are still on the very high-end of the tablet spectrum, but if you can afford one and you want one really bad, then definitely go for it.
On a side note, added a new video to the first post. lakatz
New video = even more impressive than the first. It just keeps getting better. Thanks for sharing.

Your first one was really good, but your newest one is amazing. Top stuff Sab

I hate you.
*snaps virtual paintbrushes* It's a good thing I gave up on drawing a long time ago, I still have my semicolons to comfort me. traeskapa
Wow, just wow.
Really nice Sab! Sab
New one up, go watch =]

Your girls are very attractive. Now all you need is a high-profile internet friend and a glossy printer...

Love it, of course, though the girl you like is still my fave, but Sab... I have to have that music... Ave Maria. When I was really young, I wanted to be a Catholic just because of that one song. And it continues to give me goosebumps all these years later. I love that mix and I must have it. Where can I get it? Thanks!

Absolutely amazing, as anything else I've ever seen you really put time into Sab. I can say from experience that #2 is perfectly accurate. Badass man, seriously.

Loving the new paintings, keep them coming!
In other news, my Cintiq 12WX came in today (Thanks, Guild Wars PVP!), would DEFINITELY recommend it to anyone seriously looking into the art field, it's quite amazing. ^_^ It's A Me
