Guild Wars, it's all about being the prettiest.

Seriously, If you are an old school player like myself, you would know how uber it was to have a +30 sword mod, or a superior vigor rune, or a superior absorption.
Today... It's all about looking pretty and getting minipets... Something with no residual purpose to this game but to boast and to have it accommodate your character to further more, make it look pretty!
Of course you get the newbies here and there that struggle for money... But jeez, SF? It pretty much ruined the economy and the game further more. Ectos are crap, and what are they used for? Currency, and to further make your character look pretty by buying armor that is/was supposedly rare... FOW armor...
I understand that GW is trying their best to keep things balanced, but jesus christ... Give us something that is better than what we have than JUST COSMETIC UPGRADES!
This game is turning into an RPG version of the Sims...
But hey, I shouldn't jump the gun since GW2 is coming out... But should I really be excited to play GW2 because it's going to be what GW wasn't? Or should I be excited because it IS a part of the original GW series, a great game.
Does anyone agree with me?

Well, when you've completed every campaign 3+ times, what else is there really to do PvE-wise?
PvP-wise, GvG has lost a lot of freshness with lack of balancing and stale meta builds for months at a time, RA and TA haven't been fun in at least a year, HA hasn't been fun since it was Tombs, AB is hardly even PvP, and HB is a joke.

I've said it before, though it was a long time ago, so I'll say it again. Guild Wars greatest strength is also its greatest fault. The low level cap, the easy to get max armor and weapons, and balanced around group play. It encourages you to make multiple characters and they planned to keep adding content through new chapters so that you were all ways saying to yourself, "Need to keep playing, need to get my ranger through Nightfall. Need to get my dervish through Factions." And then you get a new chapter and then the cycle repeats itself with your old characters that you felt the need to take through the new chapter and the new characters through the old chapters and then it was time for a new game to come out to start over again. Now that we have no new content these flaws are more apparent.

And to the OP, this happens with every game. It is the game getting stale, old. The more +30 being found less people needing them with easily gettable greens, What else is there to spend your money on. The game is now more acsessable to casual w/o having to spend 100k for a perfect weapon crap skin. And the hardcore can still go buy stuff for lots and lots of money. This sounds like a hidden "make obby give +1000 armor rant"

Pshhhaw, if GW was all about being pretty you wouldn't see hundreds of HIDEOUS warriors walking around in Obsidian armor, and every monk and their mother using voltaic spears and amethyst aegis. It's CLEARLY all about proving you have the most gold!
It's like the more money you spend, the uglier you look, but the bigger your e-p33n is!

Kerwyn i was just being a turd, sarcasm. but to be serious a moment i think alot of people REFUSE to realize GW (this version) has reached its jump the shark moment. this game was once about teamin up in 5 man sorrows furnace runs. (gear tank!!!! wooot) and truley exploring the continent. it was completeing those miserable titan quests. mods were worth alot. My most prized possesion is a req7 longsword i got farmin trolls outside droks. 15^50 20/20 +30 the mods cost me over 100k. those mods tapped me. NOW there is a build for everything because there is a skill for all seasons when you have 4 campaigns to draw from.
i really feel there are a few things that could have saved the economy some.
1. make bosses randomly spawn unless they are key to the story line. thus limiting the targeted farming of the greens.
2. inscriptions = bad. remember trying to salvage a +30 only to get iron or steel??? come on it happened to all of us.
3. flooding the market with green items. not every boss needs to poop out a greenie man!!! thus killing the gold market.
4. and the rediculous buffing of certain skills while knowing full well what would be the result. i mean really SF getting nearly 30 seconds?? lmao, you didnt see that gettin abused did ya.
my summation for what its worth (and i know its not much) is this. you take 4 campaigns hundreds of skills lots of very quick repetitive farming areas ADD a very clever and resourceful GW community (you build gurus know who you are) and you have what we have now. a game with a buttload of very vannila content in the way of skills. the players of GW are not stupid, you throw the ball over the heart of the plate there gonna put serious wood on that bad boy!!! BOOYAH!!!!! we have a nation of farming pros. we shant go hungry!!!!!!!!!

Don't care what other people think. I got Fow and all tormented weapons, not really trying to look good its just for Hall of Monuments. Then theres people saying that i'm a noob spending all my money on it just to look nice even if its ugly which i think its okay. IMO i dont care what other people think of me, its just the internet.
Lady Raenef
I bought FoW for my warrior because ever since I saw it in the crystal desert 2 years ago, I vowed that I would have the armor before I quit this game for life. I got FoW for my assassin because it's the most ninja to me. I plan to get FoW for my female monk because it's the only armor that shows boobs. Boobs are ftw. Fake, real, plastic, pixels. Boobs are boobs. Hooray!
Anyway, yes, this game is cosmetic. I don't plan to ever get Chaos gloves because they're ugly. People want more money sinks, things to spend ectos on. On what? Chaos socks? If the different armor sets offered different bonuses, we'd have a screwed up system. I mean, the game used to be that way before runes became so common-place. You'd buy Knights for -2, Gladiator for extra energy, etc.
Personally, I want more armor and dye options. If only customization of armor sets was available, so that way every warrior in FoW didn't look exactly the same. Or every elementalist in elite sunspear. Dye doesn't help if everyone dyes it all black.
I really hope GW2 doesn't fail.

Well, if you want your character to look pretty (at least in your eyes), you'll naturally spend more money on it. C'mon. FoW is more status than anything else - it's e-peen. Your character may look hideous, but your character will look hideous with status, or maybe you just want to fill your HoM.
The moment FoW was established as ZOMG status armor, you can bet there were people who thought 'OK, I gotta get THAT particular armor set.' When Vabbian was so popular that rubies cost more than ecto, there were probably people who decided to get it just to prove how rich and wonderful they were.
It's just that this is more apparent to us now, I guess.

While I agree with you about the overdone FoW armour and buying expensive stuff just to boast (never been into that, myself), along with the ecto farm, I kinda have to disagree with you about the "just to look pretty."
Of course I want my characters to look good! This is one of the reasons I like GW - I can wear any max armour, no matter how small the shoulder pads, and I'll get the same bonus as any other max armour. It's a great system. If all this armour was just for upgrades, that would suck.
So I kinda semi-agree. Also, a Sup Absorption rune was the reason I could buy a Guild Hall.

I certainly agree here. While I do like the cosmetics I also find it slightly disappointing that GW has relatively few ways to develop your character.
But I think GW2 may change this with a higher level cap. I also hope that in GW2 the weapons have more stats and that high-end weapons have better stats than the now common greens.

I think Guild Wars was best before the titles, hall of monuments, and mini pets.

Somebody mentioned 'pretty' and 'FoW armor' in the same sentence and now I'm suffering from cognitive dissonance ...
More seriously, though, every time I see one of the 'GW is all about <foo>' threads I must wonder whether people realize that they are describing their own aspirations rather than those presented by the game. The game environment caters to may different player groups and playing styles but it seems to be a deeply ingrained psychological tendency to explain everything from a single, anecdotal point of view.
No, GW is not all about being the prettiest any more than it is all about having the most maxed titles, or having killed the largest number of opponents in RA, or having performed the best re-enactment of the Lumberjack Song on the Henge of Dendravi stage. It's all about whatever you make out of it.

along with gift3d, i must confess that i find most of the high-end weapons/armor look like dirt. the really cool ones are few and far in between, imo...such as the silverwing recurve, or tormented shield...etc.
but it doesn't matter how ugly something is...the rarer, the more hype...the better, inherently/apparently.

i do not agree with you, i like guild wars how it is. im no elitist and i dont have the time to farm x amount of hours to farm money to buy the crap, and i dont think other casual/moderate gamers like myself should suffer because of this.
The nice thing about guild wars is everyone has a easy time getting the best weapons, this makes the game all about skill and brains instead of time and money.
Guild Wars 2 should stay like guild wars is, it is one of the most unique games in the mmo feild and if it turned into some WoW clone i would not get it, and i think that it would lose a big part of its community (to WoW, which i hate).

Guild Wars, its all about being the best.
Everything that the op listed are the very reasons that GW was great. The difference between any two characters was sitting between the chair and the keyboard.

I miss my newb days on this game, I really do...
To me, your skill matters so much more than your armor. I'm an old-school player, I've stuck with the "skill > time" mentality for regular groups; your armor doesn't mean ****, no matter what it is... your skill will.
So even if you're a bad player with FoW, you remain a bad player.
But I admit that I like kicking butt in style. So woot for armor and weapon skins .

I agree with Joshthor.
I like the loot to be largely cosmetic.
Thats why I play GW, it's different and you don't (deliberate ignoring of PvE skills here) have huge power or loot tier segregation between new players and one's that play 40+ hours a week.
If you want that go elsewhere, theres more than a few other games that will cater to your needs if you want to grind and farm out a million gold to get the "uber sword of teh fire demonz!!11!!" that kills everything in one hit only those playing 24/7 can attain.
GW is GW and the amount of people here trying to change it into what 99% of the market is already doing is beginning to get aggravating.
It's mechanics like aesthetically "high-end" loot that make GW such a cool game yet all I hear lately is more and more crappy ideas about titles, having a huge level cap and QQing about the economy making it easier for casual players to access cool gear.
Rather than trying to change the game into something it is'nt why not play a different game and leave GW be?
Seriously.

Can't say I agree with the OP. GW takes most if not all of the emphasis on gear and instead puts it on the gameplay. ANet would rather you be concerned with your skillbar then your high-end loot.
It's good to know that you're only good because you're good, not because of the time you spent boosting those stats or the leet gear you have.
Granted, I do love traditional RPGs and the feeling of picking up an awesome weapon. But if I wanted that, I wouldn't play Guild Wars.

I always love when that FoW tank kamikazes into a group, and turns around to blame the monk for not healing. The people that are just out for looks and titles are often the ones that really don't know how to play the game. (No offense to anyone, of course. :P) Sure, they know how to do a few things (namely the ones that make the most money), but that's it. Put them in a team of so-so players, and they have no idea how to deal with it.
This is not to say people that have played through the game and have nothing else to do shouldn't spend time trying to get nice things. But, you'll know who they are (most of the time). The "elitists" are the ones that constantly bitch and moan about something not being exactly right in regards to what they're used to.

GW is a casual game, It is not meant to be hard for characters to get max/perfect weapons/gear. Games get old/stale it happens to them all. Nothing is stopping you from doing 5 man furnace runs, exploring.

Guild Wars has always been about cosmetics. From day 1. Titles like GWAMM are the ultimate bling.

Last night I was doing THK with my Ele and one of the officers of my guild. I usually hero/hench missions, but she needed help. She had been working on THK all day with pugs and could not beat it. To be clear, This is not meant to be an "i'm so leet" post.
My point is that there are all types of skill levels in the game. THe officer I was playing with is older. She has a son in his late teens. I myslef play to get away from my M-F job and the kids. I like to log on find cool skins/armors and enjoy my experience. I want to be able to play the game. I like easy, I like mindless, becasue in the two hours I can play per night, I want to be able to accomplish something.
But yes, a lot of my old frineds who had the time are now out of GW.for Anet to besucessful it needs a balance of old farts playing for a long time balanced with experienced players who mater the game early.
I feel GW2 will run ito the same thing as long as they stay with the pay one price model
