Achievement System
DarkNecrid
Preface:
So...Achievements and Titles are two current gen features well known in many games and systems, such as the X-Box 360, PS3, TF2, etc. that are similar in purpose but different in implementation. They both expand the replayability of the game, but whereas Title systems are generally many ranks and sometimes give you benefits for completing each rank, Achievements in general provide no bonuses (although in games like TF2 they do) and are not in "ranks" but are rather a series of one time goals. Whereas a title such as say..."Cartographer" is a goal that is split amongst many different things (exploring 100% over 70 areas...), an achievement is a goal that is split into just itself. There is only that one goal. As you can see, they are similar in intention, and nearly the same, but are different.
The purpose of suggesting this idea is not only something I'd like to see, but a possible way to expand the replayability of the game for those of us who are perfectionists, sometime down the road. None of the achievements are impossible, and none of them provide an in-game award or bonus of any kind. They are merely "for show".
You could probably have a title for how many Achievements you have earned, but, it shouldn't count towards KOABD. (just like maxed KOABD doesn't)
Anyways, I was bored. So guess what? I came up with a list of a ton of possible achievements that could be done. Some of them even have names!

So yeah...there it is! Whaddya think, mostly about the idea in general tho do feel free to comment on how bored I was to come up with 210+ achievements and names and/or the achievements themselves.
EDIT:
To clarify, I hope people don't just go /notsigned because there are weird ones or ones that are "a bit out of reach". That is what makes the achievement system in general work where the title system doesn't always. Yes, there is some stuff that IS out of reach (to the undedicated PvPer, killing 2,500 players is a lot. Getting 100 skill points on a PvP character...etc), but the Achievement System works because you don't get any reward for completing the achievements except the "yay I did it!" for doing it. It isn't like say, the Reputation titles where you PHYSICALLY GET STRONGER in-game for doing it. None of these achievements give you anything except satisfaction for doing them. Some of them are really really easy, some of them are moderately difficult, and some of them are out of reach to the normal player, but that is ok because the normal player isn't disadvantaged any by not having those out of reach achievements, whereas a normal player who doesn't have r10 Asura is disadvantaged compared to r10 Asura (in some way, even if something like r9 to r10 is a minute difference it is still a difference, and it also affects what they get in GW2 too, even if it won't be a physical difference it is still a difference. With achievements there is no difference...no achievements and all of them = you the same).
None of the achievements are impossible, and none of them provide an in-game award or bonus of any kind. They are merely "for show".

It would be insanely fun.
Although I didn't see anything about being able to show achievements as you do with titles - so I'd add that too. Otherwise I wouldn't bother getting them.
Edit:
Just to clarify. What I'd love is a new tab on your character window where achievements are listed and you get the option of selecting and displaying an achievement the way you could with a title. Has nothing to do with creating a new title. Just the option to further customize your character with a third line of text.
Ohh and managed to read the whole wall of text - and you deserve a "Seriously good job!". Superb names and with the exception of some, very interesting choices for what should be achieved.

This is exactly why I hate the idea. I appreciate the work you put into the suggestion, however.

Wow /signed. Some people may dislike these but IMO, this would add quite a bit of life to GW.
"*Ze goggles ze do nothing!? (PvP): Kill 5 enemies while you are suffering from Blind." <---win btw
I don't care if you can display them or not, I just think it would be awesome so long as it requires some degree of skill and is fun to do. IF those were in place of oh say all the EotN titles and SS/LB I'd be playing a lot more frequently. Even if you can't show them off, most seem like they would be quite fun to get.

Like the idea but one problem I see is that most people will get most of those stuff instantly. I didn't read all of them but of the ones I did I had already done.So if they put this in I'll suddenly have a hundred achievements clogging up the place
/signed though make the stuff harder

I like achievements. As long as they give no bonuses other than something for YOURSELF, like in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars or Xbox games, I'm signing.

Do you think the game gathers info for something as easy as kill-count? Or how man foes you KDed? How many shouts you used?

Realistically half of these wouldn't work, and I play other games for unlocking achievements. If I wanted more things to get on my GW account I'd go title grind. Also half of the pvp ones are stupid (in my opinion) and a ton of these titles promote current flavor gimick builds. So when something gets nerfed and it still supports an old gimick that doesn't work, what do you do then?
A few that made me say wtf ;P
*Most Valuable Monk: Heal 1,000,000 points of damage.
That made me lol for all the prot monks out there.
*Energy Storage is...: Have 100 or more max energy.
*Not energy management!: While your max energy is 100 or more, hit 0 energy.
Yay promoting bad players. I can see it now. "But I wanna get that achievement!" /kick
*Energy Conservation (PvP): Play a whole PvP match where your energy bar never drops below 50%.
Rend, pleak, bad players.
*Attack Them While They are Down... (PvP): Hit an enemy with a Hammer attack, and then kill them with a dagger attack.
lol Backbreaker sins.

A great concept, perhaps not quite in the nature of gw. And another thing, some are painfully easy, and some are hit-head-on-wall-hard. Ie get 100 max energy. can be achieved with a few runes. However 100 skillpoints on a pvp char? ouch... Good Idea. Doubt it will work. /unsigned

Achievements are ok and all, but it tends to make people just care about trying to get them and not playing the game sometimes. (Ex. - You're in a difficult area and another player on the team screws over the whole team somehow just to go for that one achievement they want - isn't exactly my idea of fun.) I've run into that a lot on xbl and it really detracts from the gameplay.
Personally I think they're an easy way for game devs to prolong (if you could even say that) the life of a game without putting more effort into it. (Not sure if I said that quite right, but I think you'll know what I mean.) Sure they can be fun, but in the end it's pretty much grinding (which GW has plenty of as it is) for those achievements too.
But anyway, it's a nice idea and you put nice ideas for some there.

So I kind of started reading got through the PvP achieves and scrolled through the class based ones. You seem to press the no reward type thing. For the sake of balance nothing in PvP would be able to give a bonus in our current PvP system.
However I am going to /notsign because I don't want something people can just go I got this and you don't so you are a big fat noob. I also don't want them to implement a whole new type of "achievements" when most players don't even bother trying to get the titles that are our there already. They get stuff for doing those so why are they going to do something they don't get credit for. I don't mean the dumb ones like play on every ab map or heal for 1m damage or w/e I saw someone talking about in a post. I mean the ones that physically have to work for. Like the 100 skill points or whatever. O and the hours one. Anyone that has death leveled a perma pre will have that. I haven't even done that and have well over 5k hours put in.
As I look through the class based ones a little more closely. What is to stop players from 1v1 scrimming in the gh to get them? I mean the survival of the fitest or whatever. Simply fight a sin and let him use a simple like attack chain with twisting fangs in it. Then self heal. Then he can go /e and cast b flash on you and immolate. Thats meets all the reqs of it and it will be a friend who will let you self heal and then bam achieve unlocked. That is just one example.
O well good idea you can tell you put thought into it. However I don't see it working. There are to many flaws.

I thought we had them, and that they were called unlocks.
Anyway, this just seems like a way to get a thousand more titles to grind for, which is something GW really really doesn't need, so no, definitely /unsigned.

That is a lot of nice work! You obviously put a lot of time into it.
However, I'm still /unsigned. We already have enough titles that are hard to grind and ultimately do nothing. PvE "achievements" at least should confer some kind of benefit IMO to warrant their implementation.

I like the suggestion, but from my experiences in Team Fortress 2 which implements this system for the purpose of getting new (rigged) weapons, I have to say /notsigned
TF2 has achievement servers you can join so that people don't go around screwing up actual games and wrecking everyone else's fun. I foresee many people joining PvE/PvP parties and essentially griefing for the sake of their achievements.
Loved the list though, a lot of the names were great

TF2 has achievement servers you can join so that people don't go around screwing up actual games and wrecking everyone else's fun. I foresee many people joining PvE/PvP parties and essentially griefing for the sake of their achievements. Loved the list though, a lot of the names were great |
1 - There is absolutely no benefits. (I even made sure to stress this like five times!)
2 - That isn't even possible in this game because you can just leave and go get a new part instantly. And what achievements are you going to grief with?
They are just things (extra one time goals) to do. They don't give you anything. No one else can see what you've achieved (to prevent elitism). Just you. I specifically made sure to make it impossible to grief people, as 99.9% of these are things that'll happen during normal gameplay...eventually. The few oddball ones take like 0.5 seconds to do and can be done by yourself generally.
Again, thanks for the comments everyone!

though, the 100 skill points on a pvp character are almost impossible, i know somone that has 20 skill points but hes top 10 Hb and played over 500 hours on his sin.

We have an achievement system:
- HoM Honor Statues.
So if something has to be really added, is a way to show others your statues... and some more statues.

Omg, this is what ive always wanted. I love going for achievements with friends and such on Xbox. IF guildwars had this, i would fall back in love with it.

A. I'd hate for RA to turn into Halo 3 Lone Wolves ("Hai guiz! Can u halp me with achievementz?!")
B. It's too late in the game to implement anything big like this
C. Just because it works on XBL and TF2 (and PSN's 'trophies') doesn't mean it will translate seamlessly to Guild Wars.

I thought that titles and the hall of monuments was for this specific purpose, but achievements is always a good thing. Adding achievements and goals is always a yes in my book.

I like this idea. But GW already has titles.
I definitly want this in GW2 though :P

Wasn't there a thread like this already?
As I stated in that one, I don't like achievements when it was implemented on the 360, and I certainly don't like them now. Why? Because there's no reward for doing it except for bragging rights.
I am heavily reminded of a Red vs Blue PSA that was shown recently...
*pictures Caboose in Guild Wars (although much different), going "Beep-boop" after reaching Lion's Arch and a popup stating "Achievement unlocked: Reached Lion's Arch", but said popup is obviously poorly drawn*

Also half of the pvp ones are stupid (in my opinion) and a ton of these titles promote current flavor gimick builds. So when something gets nerfed and it still supports an old gimick that doesn't work, what do you do then? A few that made me say wtf ;P *Most Valuable Monk: Heal 1,000,000 points of damage. That made me lol for all the prot monks out there. *Energy Storage is...: Have 100 or more max energy. *Not energy management!: While your max energy is 100 or more, hit 0 energy. Yay promoting bad players. I can see it now. "But I wanna get that achievement!" /kick *Energy Conservation (PvP): Play a whole PvP match where your energy bar never drops below 50%. Rend, pleak, bad players. *Attack Them While They are Down... (PvP): Hit an enemy with a Hammer attack, and then kill them with a dagger attack. lol Backbreaker sins. |

no thanks, i would like to know more stats about my ch, but i don't need a achievement system to tell me or show me those stats. also this is just another way for you to ask for more titles.

While I don't like the specifics of a lot of these (many are way to easy to get, or just require doing "bad" things), it is a novel idea.
I'm kinda on the fence on this thread. While it is a creative idea, I really don't see how this "improves" anything in GW.
