OP: You're new? You'll learn. Chances are you really are bad - or at least not up to scratch. Which is to say, even if you're good for a newbie, you're still not performing up to par. There are presumably less new players, so people tend to consider anyone not up to expectations 'bad'. This might not actually be the case, but it's the typical assumption.

Also: you're monking. People already said: Rule #1 of MMORPGs = blame the monk. (Or the equivalent.) If you're monking, everyone's going to notice. If you do well, you get a lot of credit. If you do badly, you get at least the same amount - if not more - flaming.

If you're willing to learn, you'll make it, regardless of where you're playing. If not, expect criticism at the very least, and you'll be lucky if the person's nice. Frequently, they're not.

EDIT: Thanks, Clarissa. Forgot I wasn't on LJ, which uses <> instead. XD

I might add, if you're good, and you're lucky, you will get credit. Part of the issue is the lack of good monks in the game, period. At least with a Mez, the bad ones get frustrated and quit. Monks can always get a PUG, so bad ones will stay that way forever, most gaining bad habits like "Healing iz bestussez!" instead of knowing it is always better to prevent damage and keep conditions/hexes managed; or thinking they can just grab a bunch of spells and WoH and be a 1337 m0|\||<.

Learn the basics, and become proficient. And to those who think it's ok to bash someone in Snowball arena, something that was created as a part of the holiday celebration, to have fun: up your Zoloft and chill the fsck out.

Paraphrased usage of a monk:
The point to a monk is not to make the little red bars go back up, it is to prevent the little red bars from going down from the start.

Protection and Healing Prayers hybrid builds are usually the best in most PvE situations (missions and quests). When you get into high end PvE, the builds start to get more unique. Plain and simple.

Then i decided that i wanted to become a good monk because that's what people wanted the most. I was bad, people flamed me, they told me i had bad technique, whatever. I kept joining teams and trying to improve, asking better players (you can usually see) for advice or to tell you what you're doing wrong etc.

That's how i learned to play properly, sometimes i'll fool around in AB with guildies and friends running bad builds for fun but 90% of the time when i play properly people compliment me on my monking and are very friendly. Of course there are some idiot's that will call you bad while standing in Savannah heat while a dervish is pounding on them etc but you know who those people are so just tell them what they're doing wrong or /ignore.

Sorry for the rambling but what i'm really trying to say is just practice, don't be scared to ask for CONSTRUCTIVE advice and ignore those giving you bad advice or just insulting you.

Also i find quite often that if somebody is telling you that you're bad or whatever, if you ask them what you did wrong - alot of the time the guy will actually help you if you seem to genuinely want to learn.

In hindsight i am glad that people raged at me and told me to gtfo because i was terrible, it gave me incentive to practice and get better rather than think i was the best monk in the game (as 90% of all beginner's do).

So just work hard and eventually you'll be the one telling people what to do.
The problem is too many people are too "busy" to give any good constructive criticism.

I do agree with Avarre... the best thing to do is shut up watch and listen... GvGs obsing is a good tip. Pay attention to the class.. not just to their skill bar either, watch their positioning, target selection, use of skills etc.

I took my raging/criticism like a man and it made me better, there's always more to learn even if you are good.

What does piss me off is when someone is given some good constructive criticism and all they do is "stfu noob ill pwn you 1v1, your retarded"

When someone is harsh and truthful without being a total douche is when your ears should be open and eyeballs clicked.

Shhh. Don't talk about people being naturals in a game, or people will find out I got good in ETQW or CoV in about a week.

That seems to be a common excuse PvEers use to reassure themselves.

Unfortunately, it's true only one way. Good at PvP (and I mean really good) does automatically mean you're good at PvE, because doing good in high-level PvP requires a lot more of a brain than anything else. Doing good in PvE requires mostly just knowledge. If you know what to expect in a certain mission/dungeon/area and you know what skills do, you win.

So, a good PvP player may not know what he's about to face, but he would either:
a) Adapt to the situation and beat the area with the skills he has
b) Learn what to expect and steamroll it the next time

If the guy you met wasn't doing either of those, he was either bad at pvp as well (yes, you can still be bad even if you flash a shiny tiger) or simply screwing around.

No, not the game...the community. I like to mix it up between PvE and PvP. I like PvE because I can do it mostly solo, but PvP comes as more of a challenge for me.

Recently I've been doing the snowball arena and some Random Arena PvP. I play a monk on both sides and no matter what I do, people are arrogant and disrespectful to everyone. If someone on my team dies in PvP, it's my fault. If our team loses the snowball arena, everyone cusses at eachother.

Now I have no basis for comparison, but is this the way all MMORPGs are?
I ceased to do PvP largely because of this behavior. I also PvE 90% of the time with people I already know. Beyond that I occasionally help guys that are obviously just getting started with the game or havent had anyone help them with how to set up skill bars, heroes, armor, and tips on tactics in PvE.

NC West has tried over the years to eliminate bad behavior in game. Some things are important, such as keeping trade in trade chat so that we can organize and communicate in all chat. There is a need to come down on people who are are merely crude and blatantly nasty and vulgar. The flip side comes with those who take offense at any and everything merely because they can. The recent thread on character name bans where a person was banned for making a name that is a statement of real life fact (Hoes are for Gardens) shows how idiotic those who choose to be offended and the NC Soft response can be. A neighbor cannot name her pet warthog Anklebiter, which she used to have on her original warrior, or any variant spelling of the verb "to bite" because of this idiocy.

But, James Madison pointed out in the Federalist Papers that there are only two ways to regulate the public - either to force upon people the same views and interests or to deny all views and interests. In seeking a balance between these extreems some jerks will have to be tolerated in order to allow others freedom. What we generally have is a failure of balance in any capacity. NC Soft has its share of the blame, but cannot be blamed for the general observation that, as George Carlin puts it, the Public Sucks.

If that's correct i seriously doubt he's actually a "high-end" PvP player. Being realy good at GW PvP requires in-depth knowledge about pretty much every game-mechanic, skill knowledge, ... Add the need for tactical insight and you end up with smart, veteran GW players. And sorry to burst your bubble, but those will always be way better than 99% of the PvE-community at PvE. Most of the high-end PvPers rarely play PvE though, and if they do, it's pretty much never with pugs but with other PvPers (friendslist is key in PvP and PvE).

On topic though : every competitive game has idiots that like to flame and call people names. It's not an MMO-thing, it's a video game thing. I've lost track of the amount of kickvotes and admin bans i've eaten over the years for being better than average in FPS-games. On equal account, i've been called a "backstabbing pussy" for linebacking a frenzying warrior in Guild Wars. Clueless retards are everywhere. At least in GW you can only get flamed for being bad, and the whole "hacker, cheater, hax, ban !" train doesn't exist.

Can't handle rude people ? Play single player games, or stick to the coöp side of MMO's (and even then people can still call you names if you RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO up during a run and cause a partywipe)

On the pve terms, many many top gvg/pvp players have high rank KOABD etc on their main characters. They do know how to pve.

I once 60'd a frenzyhappy war doing this, got called a "mother RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing linebacking eurofaggot". Twas fun stuff, seeing as i was only chucking the occasional spike on him and not linebacking much at all.

So yeah, people are anal in pvp. Even the people you get all nicely treated by will have trash talked the opposing team at some point.

The Internet is filled with anonymous arseholes. No big surprise.

For what it's worth, I had an absolutely awesome HM PUG for Urgoz two days ago. Not the fastest (~2.5 hours, including some afk time and two leavers), but incredibly fun and civil. Most fun I've had with the game for a while, especially with a PUG.

This community is pretty much what Chocobo said. It's pretty freakin rare to find a decent, nice, non-annoying player now-a-days. This time last year the community was slightly nicer...but now its down the shitter -.-. After playing Perfect World, I most def noticed that PW's community was 10x more helpful, nicer, less elitist then GW.
Tbh, I wouldn't recommend GW to anyone right now. Maybe GW2, but not GW >.>

Guild Wars is a waste of time if you care about having a decent community. Go play LOTRO or even Warcraft on an RP server. They tend to attract older and more mature crowds that have actual responsibilities and don't have the enormous gobs of spare time to sit and type angry litanies as an outlet for their social and romantic frustrations.

If you don't mind the fact that 99.9% of the Guild Wars "community" is roughly on par with Youtube comments when it comes to maturity and intelligence, however, it's still a fun game.

Sadly, it wasn't always like this. I guess all the little brats and bored college kids figured out they could play without a credit card and swarmed it, I don't know.

Honestly, even though GW can be somewhat complicated for a new player, between obs mode, 2 general wikis, pvx, gwg, QQ, etc., there are enough reputable, highly detailed resources available that anybody with the time to find, read, and understand them can become decent. Now whether someone have the time and/or motivation to actually make the effort is what separates truly good people from bad players who use the same retarded builds and make the same stupid mistakes.

Once you can play proficiently and no longer want to be a good, but unknown, unacknowledged player, you need to take into account the social aspects of GW. Basically you want to build a great friends list that can get you guests, TA groups, HA groups, and hopefully an invite to a guild filled with other competitive, good players. How do you do this? Honestly, you can try cold calling "good" players out of the blue and hope that they take the time to respond, but you'll find a lot of the time that they simply can't be bothered. A more successful way is to basically stroke their epeens and become friends first (this is assuming you're a cool person and can make friends), whereupon it becomes exponentially easier to talk to them, ask for advice, and do non-serious activities like AB/sync-RA with them. If you don't make any retarded mistakes on your pvp expeditions and win enough, your "good player" buddy will tend to look upon you more highly and is more likely to take you into HA/TA/GvG. Don't expect to be guested for a mAT, but anything that exposes you to more "good" players is helpful, since if you don't manage to singlehandedly lose the game for them, they are more likely to play with you again. By being seen/associated with them and having them say nice things about you, eventually others will see you as "good" and the guest invites will pour in. Congratulations, you are now "good" at Guild Wars.

Note: The above process works 1612362323896723986x better if you have 2 X chromosomes.

TL;DR: Expect to be flamed because you're bad, read forums/wiki, get better, suck epeen to build flist, become good.

Dr. House way of looking at things....

Just pretend you're a robot with no emotions. Blazed through everything and everyone in your path and don't care about what they say.

Regular peoples way of thinking.....

This is a game, tough luck with how you are being treated online.

My way of thinking.....

Just do your things and avoid those who are rude to you.

They may very well "know" PvE but KOABD titles are not indictive of a "good" player. It just shows that they have lots of time on their hands. Heck many of the titles are "bought".

Make friends is the easiest way imo. Just talk to people and ask if you can add them to friends list and the whole "I invite you, you invite me" thing works pretty well. Ask for advice, if you think someone is good at what they do, ask them questions. If they're a jackass they're probably bad anyway, and have bad advice. Observe matches and get a friend who knows whats going on to tell you whats going on, and why people are doing what.

Expect to get flamed, expect to be called bad, and if you tombs, you'll probably get some fanboys who spam your name cause they think they're the best. <3
