We Made Mallyx Tap [Out]

I got my girl to play GW with me. However she is not very good and I don't know how much she will improve. I would like to hear everyone's opinion as to which class is the most important to a party's success. She will play a ranger and I think we'll H/H most of the game. What prof should I play to give us a high rate of success. We'll be doing normal mode so we should be fine but she is easily discouraged and I want to maximize our chances to beat every quest and mission on the 1st try without wasting time. Oh and prophecies chars only, I like that storyline the most. I was thinking monk but then I leave all the offense to her and henchies, and I don't think she'll follow my calls effectively.

To be honest, Monk.

I know you said that you don't know if she's going to follow your calls effectively or not, but the Heroes and Henchmen will.

If you don't have access to Heroes, the choice of Monk is definite, since Hench monks in Prophecies do NOT have Condition or Hex Removal.

You'll prolly have to bite the bullet and be the Heal/Prot-Bot.

No hopping over to other continents to pick up skills?

If it were an option, I'd suggest a "godmode" dragonslasher. That's a good combination of offense and (totally broken) defense.

Otherwise, I'm going to have to go with monk.

Have legend skill hunter and a bunch of tomes so all skills are fair game. I was thinking of getting some heroes. Dunk, Ogden and Olias would take very little time to get. If I do that then godmode looks fun. Warrior is the only class I don't have a toon for. The only negative is her account has Proph/Factions only. No heroes for her. Thanks for the info so far.

IMO if she's as bad as one of my female ex-roomates from college, your going to want to go monk to heal her poor constantly dying ass. My roomate had no understanding of aggro whatsoever. I swear the girl was suicidal. She would charge into 20+ groups of enemies almost twice her level...and she was a mesmer. I had to go R/mo WoH whenever I was with her.

If you're willing to go and get heroes and you haven't played Warrior before, I think the choice is obvious. Dunk and Ogden will allow you toget past some of the shortcomings of the henchies, and if you go on and get Gwen as well, that'll give you interruption, which is the other main shortcoming of the Prophecies henchmen. Of course, she could surprise you and prove to be an effective interruptor with her Ranger.

Either way, though, if you set Olias up as a MM, he'll probably minimise your problems quite effectively.

If you have all campaigns, I'd say go imbagon, and always bring a minionmaster and at least one healer hero with you. Decent damage with excellent support and all that.

Just remember that she's bad because she's new, not because she's female, and that new will pass. Help her cap an elite or two, buy her max armour if she doesn't have the funds and explain that running into 6 mobs at once is not smart. Chances are you won't need to martyr yourself to keep her alive.

Theres no such thing as one most vital profession for every area as each place brings its own challenges. Assuming though that you have full access to heroes, then you cant go far wrong with sabway (3 necros) in most of proph.

Sooo....to sum up. According to the responses every Profession except Assassin, Mesmer, Elementalist, Ranger and Dervish are vital.

If you got access to heroes, leave the Monking to heroes. It gets dull Monking all the time. To be honest, as long as you got some skill in this game, it doesn't matter much what profession you are.

More, if she is getting healed all the time, with you saving her ass, she won't get any better at the game. Give her time to learn the basics, on her own, without you telling her what to do and all.

I would hate someone holding my hand every time I walked out of town.

I had to go R/mo WoH whenever I was with her. *twitch* One of my friends did that. He liked making things go splodey, but he would run ahead of me into mobs of... well, mobs, and wonder why he died. This became exquisitely frustrating and usually culminated in me shouting "IF YOU WANT ME TO TANK, STOP RUNNING AHEAD OF ME."

Also, to OP: Don't hold her hand. It's a great way to make sure she 1. gets bored, 2. starts relying on you too much. You want her to be a good player who can hold her own. Teach her the basics, and let her make her mistakes. THEN, when she does make mistakes (like everyone else), you can tell her what went wrong and why.

She's already better than one male friend of mine. He played War and I played monk. He would always run into huge groups and get pissed when I wouldn't heal him enough, no idea about energy management. He quit playing and I took his account and gave it to my girl. She already knows what kinds of groups we can do and she even knows when and how to pull. If she learns when and what to to interrupt I will be very pleased, but that comes with experience. I decided to play War because of all the provided reasons, and it seems like it'll be more fun. Monking can get dull and I don't want to be holding her hand, that was a good suggestion. Thanks for sharing everyone.

Monk. But there are a few things to consider about each different aspect of your situation.

1. Your gal is playing a Ranger. Rangers are some of the easiest characters to keep alive in battle because they've got the armor of a post-Proph frontliner (even more vs. Elemental damage which can destroy new players that don't recognize the need to immediately move out of it) but stick to midline play. My girlfriend that I play with most of the time is a primary Ranger and is great at it, but when she went Assassin she sucked royally. On a Ranger, all you really need to teach is C-Space and 9/10 times in NM instead of being noob, it'll be called "effective pulling." So you don't have to worry a whole lot about her dying repeatedly and stacking DP.

2. For Prophecies NM only, I would without a doubt say Monk. When I play on my own Monk, it allows me to replace a 2 Monk + 1 Support backline with 1 Monk + 1 Support or 2 Monk backline just because I know how to prioritize heals and manage energy better than the AI. So consider that if you're an effective Monk, you're also increasing your party's damage output potential by a whole character in your party.

3. If you venture into HM, I might reconsider Warrior as the best, as someone previously mentioned, for [Save Yourselves!] spam. This allows you to increase your own damage output like crazy for the added armor/attributes in HM while actually increasing your party's defensive capabilities as well.

4. Again, as someone mentioned, a Necromancer can be used in nearly any situation. Depending on the situation, you can gain healing through N/Rt [Weapon of Remedy] or [Xinrae's Weapon] builds, you can gain pressure/direct damage from an MM using [Discord], [Jagged Bones], or [Order of Undeath] (a favorite of mine), you can gain support healing/damage from N/(Mo/Rt) [Icy Veins][Foul Feast] support Necro, crazy damage from [Spiteful Spirit] or [Feast of Corruption], and probably some more. This is universal as well between NM and HM. While a human played Monk could heal better or a human played Mesmer could sport more damage, a Necro will fit well into any party in NM or HM.

5. While I know you said Proph only, consider a Ritualist or Paragon, the first for NM for anytime you may get stuck without enough offense but still need support heals, buffs, etc., the second for the same problem but in HM. A Rit will allow you to run a Channeling/Resto split that lets you toss in [Ancestor's Rage], [Splinter Weapon], or similar direct damage/buffs while tossing around [Protective was Kaolai] and [Life], two of the greatest party heal skills in the game. Paragons, in my opinion, are a waste of a similar ability in NM, as SY! is a waste until you start seeing ridiculous damage output like in HM. However, a Paragon's Spear DPS on top of invinci-party make them an obvious choice for a utility character in HM.

Hope it helps.

I think the monk is most vital in that PvE mission/quest parties almost never go out without one. If she's playing ranger (i.e. good survival profession) though, I suggest a ritualist - you can switch your role between heavy offense and defense/healing as needed, and she'll probably find the weapon spells very helpful (splinter barrage comes to mind).

ive been in your position quite a few times, trying to get real life friends to play with me. most of them played ranger as their first class also, since is a very versatile class and as i told them rangers are very helpful in a group and basically if youre average at playing the group will do fine. they really only notice if you dont do your job at all or if you do it amazing.

as for your situation, since you seem like a rather competent player, id suggest you go elementalist. depending on your goals for your daughter, i feel this is the best class for you two to grow and learn together. monk tends to be the obvious choice, but from past experience with playing with real life friends/siblings and such, this may cause troubles.

reasons for elementalist being the top choice for this situation:
1. versatility. as an ele you mostly just have to button mash, allowing you free access to watch her skill usage and can talk. each zone depending on foes, you can change elements to teach about snares with water, wards with earth, single target spikes with air, and nuking with fire.
2. simplicity. as the ele you can fire and forget most of your skills allowing you to micro heroes if you so choose or just relax. (this is where i would argue against being a monk since it puts unneeded stress on your relationship when hero monks can do the same job).

also for team composition i would say for the early parts of the storyline, dont bring an mm. it would just promote lazy play to start with. also id advise against godmode save yourselves. let her learn without the ways of making it boringly easy. challenges are how you learn. playing with sabway and imba is fine once you have the basics mastered, but shes learning so you dont want to 'cripple' her and make her rely on those skills.

and for her outlook into being a pro interrupter, id say shell be great, every girl ive played with has had crazy good reflexes, so i bet shell suprise you

good luck! and pm me if you have any other questions. ign autumn maximus.

too much noise in this thread.

Dr. Taki believes one of the best options would be to let the Hero monks handle party protection while you roll an offensive character. That would allow you to take control of situations, become a strong active example for her to learn from, and lessen the frustration/boredom that can come when dealing with new players.

If you're not comfortable with a War as the Prophecies-only char, I would suggest Ele, providing you buy powerful skills early or use tomes as they can be weak starting out. Ward vs Melee should be learned ASAP.

Necro as MM would be overkill. Curses or hybrid not quite as boring.

Ranger could work well though generally not the same killing power and aggro control as a war.

Mesmer would be the strongest choice given limited A.I., fast kills and huge amount of damage they can prevent. Problem is that you have to know how to play them as well as adjust your bar depending on mobs in the zone.

In the end, it's only Prophecies so if you don't gimp yourself too much by not using Heroes or skills from other campaigns, you shouldn't have much trouble.

If I were your I would go with the profession I like the most, thers no point playing a Monk if you think taking care of others is boring, choose the profession you like most and let your girl do the same, you can learn to use them properly in no time, PVE aint hard at all so just go with what you like most.

Well since u only considering NM only, id have one of u play a ele with ether renewal, with a bunch of party support stuff from the 2nd profession. With the "infinite energy", just choose a bunch of spells from 2nd profession that r useful and highly spammable.

If you get heroes, let the heroes do the monking and mm. That way she can deal damage as a ranger, and I would suggest the Warrior as your 1st choice for damage, the Imbagon is a choice too, but being able to work with controlling aggro as a frontliner will help her also.

to the op:
since u are going to play mostly in nm imo it doesn't really matter what profession u play,my advice is that u should play the profesion u like best or the one u are more comfortable to play with, and btw i don't belive there is such thing as the most important class to a party's success, every profession has its pros and cons and u got to figure out a way to make them work in synergy, also tyria can be completed entirely with only henchman so its not that hard in nm.
