I've posted about this in forum conversations before, but I thought I would make a separate topic to highlight this.

We're still hiring, so if you're a web developer or programmer and you think you've got the stuff, please take a look at the job listings:

http://www.plaync.com/us/jobs/jobs_arenanet.php

There are also some art and design positions, too.

EDIT: This is for GW2. :-)

Isn't it kinda funny that dev teams only look for the very best and most experienced game developers but never really bother to try and develop them themselves.

this made me laugh.

i dont know if this is some sort of publicity thing by regina trying to say that the anet team is doing really well despite all the cutbacks and job losses. but these jobs have been on the site for a while. if you simply click on 'more jobs' there are tons of roles.

if this was a major thing then surely this topic would be a sticky and would have been made a long time ago. seems a little to planned to all of a sudden try and get the average forum goer to notice there are jobs on in a time of cut backs.

Geez!!! They are looking for the best of the best...this is a good thing.

Maybe some of the people let go didn't measure up or were not in a central enough area to be part of the team.

For all that are sure ArenaNet is just running another scam..go find a game you can trust...make sure they like Lemmings!

I guess it seems planned to you if you haven't seen me posting a link to the jobs page before on the forums.

Our recruiter just told me today to get the word out again, so I did.

Are they all GW2 related? I guess so, but you never know.

It's a good thing they still hire ofcourse. Complex stuff to master though.

The people let go worked for NCsoft, not here at the ArenaNet studios.

Some of the advertised positions have been advertised there for a few months now. Our recruiter thought it would be worthwhile to get the word out again, so I posted here. If you're not interested, it's fine.

in my opinion, this is a great opportunity. Like Antares, I don't qualify either. My background is accounting Otherwise I would jump all over it.

Also..

It's amazing how crappy the first few posts were after Regina announced it....she brings valuable information to the forum and people try to turn it into whatever they want. Sad.

Thank you Regina!

I just wish EmJey from this forums has a look he will be great in the art and design positions esp considering his talent :-)

I'll pass the word around my real life family/friends list, Regina. With so many unemployed on that list nowadays, a move to the Northwest Coast will seem more attractive.

Thanks for the info.

I've been tempted to apply to arenanet a few times...I could probably get in as an environmental \ prop artist if I sent them my best 3D work.

But then I realized they would likely do an in-game background check on my account only to reveal 3 years of the legendary trolling and griefing moments I have accomplished both in game and in forums.

i dont understand why people are making fun of this, this is an oppurtunity for experienced web developers and programmers who are fond of the game and physcd about GW2, to work on the actual thing and get a sneek peek at it, and your getting paid in the horrible job-market we live in nowadays. I only wish i had a degree to help, but by the time i get one GW2 will be out, i hope, lol.

I applaud ANet for still hiring (even if those positions have been up for a while) in this tough economic climate. I'm in my first year of college and I'm very close to deciding what I want to major in. I'm going to be an engineer, but between computer science and electrical, I have no clue. My dream job is game development though. Whether or not I actually go for it is an entirely different matter. Anyway, I would so be interested if I was old enough/had degree/had experience.

In this industry, like in most computing companies, training is done at Uni or via personal experience in a startup company, or via personal projects done in your own free time. I'm sure that, like any other companies, Anet provides training for specific stuff, but you need to have the right kind of skills (see the specific job profiles to see the technical stuff they ask for...the "Tools and Engine Programmer" job requires sending 2.5k LOC). And they can't financially afford at this point to hire "inexperienced" people.

CS will more likely help you. although electronics (called "electrical engineering" in the USA?) is very helpful.

I'm sure they will, if the person is willing to move. You don't have that many talented programmers in the world to allow yourself to disregard international applications. If you look at the job profiles, you actually need quite a lot of experience.

That's the problem IMO, too much reliance on the universities. Writing code for gaming in general, and online gaming in specific, is going to be a lot different than writing general business apps. Plus from my college experience, most computer programming classes are just enough to get your feet wet and not really geared to the more demanding tasks.

I really think this country needs to bring back apprenticing as an option.

Regina, how many writers does Anet employ?

I have noticed that many game companies dig deep when it comes to finding talent for programing and graphics but rarely do they go after writers to punch up the story aspect of games. Considering how important PvE looks to be for GW2 I would think they would want some highly skilled writers to add some new and creative twists not to mention prevent any large plot holes that might develop.

At this level of programming, you don't simply code stuff as you'd do for the "average" application. Knowledge of algorithms, advanced coding, software design, and the likes are the basic stuff at this level, not even "advanced" (knowing the quality of the code Anet procudes, I'm sure they expect candidates to be highly inventive and create the next advancements in the field). Sure, you can learn it by yourself, and it happens relatively often (see many independent gaming companies). But when you're going into the "major" league, you need to have a baggage that is easier to get when you've done a "serious" programming/game degree (I'm not even sure if a general CS degree would be acceptable if experience of gaming is not shown). It's not per se a prerequisite, as you can clearly see in the Anet job profiles which don't mention degrees at all, but it helps immensely.

I agree that apprenticeship is a great option (I myself teach programming to non-CS students), but an MMO is not in the category of average computing applications. Not at this point in time (it would have been the case 5-7 years ago).

Web apps are quite different, because they're technically more limited than traditionnal apps. Although the pressure on professional finish (visual, server workload, security) is such that it's slightly more difficult to learn the tricks of the job.

They actually were hiring some new writers recently - not sure if they still need more though. Never saw the positions posted on the site either.

If you really really want to write story for Guild Wars,

come up with one for a GW's BMP or expansion, copyright it (if its your own story) :P~ then send it to Arena Net, who knows they might buy it! and we get more things to play until GW2.

I don't think I am qualify, unless they want to hire someone to layout their newsletters and can work from overseas to the US I am very cheap :P~
