And what websites have you provided your email to that knows you play Guild Wars? I doubt this is a random email, as they would not waste time sending this to people who don't have an account to steal. Perhaps it is a problem for a website that you need to notify them about an email going through based on thier site. That, or you are visiting sites that steal accounts, like gold sellers, 'hacks', and bots. I'd look more into WHY you got it than anything else. If they have your email, they may also have your computer infected with a keylogger, spyware, etc.
Damian979
Haha, yes that's pretty pitiful. The support team at PlayNC doesn't use AOL mail, and I'm pretty sure they know basic grammar like capitalization.
Thanks for the heads up an yea, I would black out that addy if I were you.

A working Xunlai House account holds the associated GW account name. If someone can get to that, they're halfway there.
Arduin
Pretty old mail too, first of January, 2009.
faraaz
Yea, I don't check that email account very often. And actually, that isn't the email id I use for either of my 3 GW accounts. That's the email id I used to correspond with Anet when I had technical issues with them through that form thing you have to submit.
Once, I did that because I had issues with their billing system for some in store purchases, and again because I had trouble getting a game account linked to a playNC account.
So, how they got it, idk. I don't really go to any other guild wars related website, except for Guru and Teamquitter.

i had a pm on guildwarsguru that was gold selling

That's pitiful.
~ <--- Who uses bullet points like these in formal mail?
~ PlayNC, a multi-million dollar business, using AOL as their mailing service. I don't even think AOL hate themselves enough to use AOL.
~ Missing full-stops
~ Missing capitals
~ Nasty grammar "your account is in danger become deleted"
~ Requesting password.
It doesn't bother me though because I just found out that I won the Canadian and Nigerian lotteries. When I pay the £10,000 transfer and accounting fees I'll be rich!

Very sloppy. the aol address and crappy grammar is a dead giveaway, but I do wonder how many people fall for this sort of thing. I mean come on, if anet lost your account how would they have your email to contact you.
-rightuos-
Now use the scammers e-mail and regester them with as many seedy websites as you can
Songbringer
Just another thing to point out since punctuation and everything else has been. Why would they use their bullet(even if it was a stupid icon to use for one) to bullet sincerely plaync. That and everyone knows that support are a bunch of a** holes and wouldn't be so cordial and say sincerely but more like go kill yourself we aren't going to help you even if it is a legitimate problem(sorry tangent).
moriz
there are plenty of people who WILL fall for this. all you have to do is go over to the tech forums and read some of the posts to know who they are (IE, the ones who ask very basic questions).
for most of us who frequent this forum, this stuff is easy to catch. unfortunately, a lot of people just don't know better.

If anyone is deceived by that, they DESERVE being deceived.
I'm not saying that is right to do that kind of scam, though.
Just look at that text! It's barely understandable English at all!

Most of us wouldn't fall for such an obvious one, but social engineering works in such a way that we would fall for one, because for example of an "insider threat" (would you believe the content of this email if it came with a specific comment that sounds totally believable due to your own personal experience)?
The only real progress here is to teach people how to behave on the net, a real challenge in this day and age of "we know everything, please learn the Internet". Knowledge is power, wisdow is survival.

They forgot,
~SSN.
~Bank account user name, password and safety code.
~Where you live.
~How much money you have.
~Where you live and what time your gone.
~If you have security, what is the cancellation code?
~If you have family, how much are you willing to pay for them?
If you don't respond I will delete your account.

Yeah, that is one obvious e-mail:
AOL
asking for main character name
I would have forwarded this to Anet with notifications etc.
Monk of Myst
Wow...this is a sad attempt. I mean, come on!
But yes, forward this to Anet/NCSoft and let them know of this. They might want to put up an announcement of a scam emails from these people just to alert the gaming community that there is a scammer emailing people. Then again, I can't say how many people never read those messages on the side of the login area of the main Guild Wars Screen.

I actually can't believe they didn't bother to spoof a halfway believeable email address. All it takes is an open relay, for pity sakes...

I lost faith in humanity ages ago. This sort of stuff doesn't surprise me at all. I just hope very few people got scammed as I totally despise dishonest losers like the one sending the email.

Failers failing, wow... They could have at least spoofed their e-mail. Not like it's hard...
All you need is a server that allows php and a mailer script. You can easily see through the headers where it was sent, but most people don't check their headers (most don't show them by default).
Maybe they were stupid enough to mail it without proxies too... Check your headers. Not sure if AOL leaves that info or is less crappy now.
