An idea I had
cerb
Hi GWGuru,
I had an idea last day (for GW2) and I'd need some community feedback on it. Some of you know me for writing The Art of Underworld, and I had started working on a website project called The Mists, which was abandoned. I figured I could perhaps reuse that name (The Mists) for a guild wars farming magazine. The idea would be a monthly (or bi-monthly) magazine with all the latest updates in the farming community: new builds, areas, strategies, everything. It would be designed, and there would be plenty of images to make it very comprehensible, and of course every guide would be reviewed and tested many times. And, thinking about it, I don't think the guide should be restricted to farming, perhaps it should be as much PvP as PvE. But basically, the idea is to keep the community up to date with a synthesis of all current trends, ideas, and other stuff going on around the game.
Now, three questions (I would add a poll, but GWGuru forums won't allow it):
1. Do you think this is a good idea? Do you have any suggestions?
2. How would you prefer the magazine to be? (Printed, for a small amount, with a possibility of subscriptions so you would get it a few days before the online copy is released / released as PDF, for a smaller amount, or for free / other?)
3. Would you be interested?
Thanks!
(ps: if anyone is interested and would like to participate in this project, contact me!)

Sounds like a good idea, I wouldnt print it out and attempt to get subscriptions etc, its all bit of a hassle as people could just get the free one online.
PDF would be the best format to send it in, but yeah, you could try and get some stuff on the new PVP meta, farming guides, a review of the latest monthly GvG and HB tourny finals etc. Might be a nice idea.

Wiki and skill templates destroyed creativity and induced cookie cutting builds. Having a monthly "farming" magazine imo is a step in the wrong direction. Heck they should remove Wiki and the stupid in-game templates. The entire community are just a bunch of cookie cutting clones.

even through the negativety from the other posts... centralling on the "farming" element of the idea what I initially saw through your post was a newsletter type idea for all the latest goings on and how the updates have effected gameplay.
The scope is huge for what can be included..as mentioned an area for the last month's pvp tourney results, builds used, match analysis etc.
Also could cover some popular teambuilds or runs/farms etc i.e. when rojway first became widespread or the vsf etc etc.
Can have some activites, perhaps game based competitions for your readers.
Perhaps even HM mission guides or something.
Ways to farm for something specific, as in a specific item or collector armour.
Guide to certain titles such as survivor or LDoA.
I know some of these might be covered elsewhere but the magasine could be a place all the latest news and updates could be collated and interesting bits people may not have seen, added.

I'd check it out..I say go for it.

I wouldn't invest so much effort into a dead game

This is for GW2 I would like to remind you

You probably aren't going to get any meaningful number of subscriptions, but you call sell advertising on the website. Sort of like how Jame's Leveling Guide works for WoW.

Sounds like a bad idea, if something too popular comes along we could see something like what happened to elemental swords happen again. Or drive the prices of high end items way down like vsf did to Voltaic Spears.

I say go for it. I'd check it out if it was in .pdf format. Especially if it was appealing enough to the eye(looked like a real magazine.).

Hey didn't know theres something called The Art of Underworld before. I had a peek and like it. it is very weldone!
I like the idea. go ahead with the Mist.
Did you know something we didn't to make you want to start a farming guide when the new announced GW2 will only be out in year 2010/11?
to answer your question:
Free digital copies are most welcome.

Sounds like a very cool idea. However I wouldn't put much hope on a subscription-based mag on a subscription-less mmo :P

Make it specifically a "news letter" and not another "wiki" type clone and I'm all for it.

I would possibly subscribe to just a general newsletter in PDF form would be ideal, but as you didn't give it as a free option go whatever's free. To be honest I would never buy anything that has info that I can get myself for free with an easy google search.
I don't think farming is a good idea, but just a general all-rounder GW2 newsletter I would definitely be interested in.

Bluefeather
an update (farming, builds, etc) that comes one every month (or every other month) is a bad idea especially for a new game where changes take place every hour.
Xun Rama
Bad idea. It would always be inferior to current platforms.
subarucar
I think it would be a cool thing. IMO get a few people to work together.
Things like having tournament results with descriptions of how each battle went, builds used and players.
Although i do hate the build cloning stuff, its going to go around anyway, through forums and wiki, so theres nothing wrong with having a few of the latests farms included.
You could also add game updates, skill balances, Guild of the week etc, etc.

I, for one, think it's a great idea. I have a guild member who can never remember his forum password, so a mailing that would include news and build info would be wonderful for him.
Avarre
A sort of summary/report of developments in PvE (farming included) wouldn't be entirely out of place. Guru as it is runs around like a retarded mongoose after every update/new area trying to figure out what is going on, so it could be quite contributory to have something like this set out.
Ideally I'd like to have staff members whose job it is to do these (or to have done, when the game was far more active), but we can't have it all.

I think it's a really good idea and you should go for it. I wouldn't pay for it though....Otherwise it sounds fantastic c:

considering it would be in relation to GW2 - it sounds like it would be worth while.
would be voting for the .pdf/ flash free format.

Perhaps I'm not understanding you right but, isn't the Wiki and Guru exist for this purpose? I don't see the need to have a magazine that puts the 2 websites together, it's easier just to leave the information on the Internet where it's freely accessable imo.(Instead of a magazine where you gotta go to a bookstore)
|
The fansites and wikis would have all the information, while something like this would be more of a highlights section of new concepts/builds/whatever.

It wouldn't be so bad as long as most are knowlegable about and if this is for GW2 I would wait as it will be soloable anyway no need for heros or hench.I would just make a website and get some people to write artricles for it but as I said.We don't know what GW2 will be like so it is hard to implement an idea now instead instead of just waiting it out.

As Avarre pointed out, there is a difference my idea and fan forums/wikis. The magazine would be written by competent people and it would be a really reliable source of info, plus everything information will be pertinent (unlike forums). It's essentially a well laid-out, designed magazine, with a lot of pictures and all the good info in the same place, every bit of it being as good as the other and for many sectors of the game (PvE, farming, GvG, HA, TA, for instance).
Of course you can say forums, but generally you won't get many guides like The Art of Underworld (to quote my own work, but you have to admit) in wikis and forums.

I find all the necessary info I need from various forums and Wiki and have no need of any magazines (which I assume you will charge money for). I saw these scams on ebay and yahoo auction sites all the time during my play of EQ2. People taking information off of forums that OTHERS contributed and combined them into an organized format and then put up rediculous prices from $9.99 to $29.99 lol. But, if you're going to give these magazines out for FREE I see no issues with that.

1. Do you think this is a good idea? Do you have any suggestions?
It's a nice idea, but not so much "builds". Preferably, it would be something like... "Skill of the day/week" when you discuss uses for that skill, useful synergies in various situations with small examples. Perhaps have several such skills (one from each profession?)
As everybody here knows, giving people ready-made builds that they don't understand leads to absolutely useless players when something changes.
Another useful thing would be descriptions of areas, the enemies, general feel of the zone, etc. Similar to the wiki pages we have now, but with actual advice to clearing/adventuring through it rather than just objective info. Maps, patrol routes, bounties.
2. How would you prefer the magazine to be? (Printed, for a small amount, with a possibility of subscriptions so you would get it a few days before the online copy is released / released as PDF, for a smaller amount, or for free / other?)
Online free copy. Too few people would pay for international delivery, and restricting it to whatever country you live in would suck You COULD make a paper copy, maybe with added information for the people who want to have it. But if you don't offer free online copies, it will just get spread around, because people do that.
You can probably choose something like lulu.com for publishing. You make cash - which could go for prizes or just paying the Employee of the Month, and the result is a very nice-looking magazine.
3. Would you be interested?
Yup. I don't know that I could contribute (if it was for GW, yeah, but I don't know if I like GW2 since I haven't played it yet), but if this project happens, I'll hear of it and get myself involved.

You would have to give Anet and NCSoft credit as well and if you sell such magazine they would want thier share of it to it is called royalities.

1) A magazine not limited to farming would be nice. For example, talk about the economy in general as well.
2) PDF would be the way to go.
3) I would be interested.

Alright, I will drop the idea of selling the magazine (it was only to pay the paper costs anyway, because I think paper support is better than screen but it looks like it's not gonna get the GWGuru seal of approval). SmartBomb, you gave me a good idea. What about an article about economy predictions/tendancies?

Basically, it's all very scattered to someone who just plays the game casually. If someone actually researched this stuff then reported and predicted what could happen, it would really help a lot of people.
