An idea I had

I think it would be a cool thing. IMO get a few people to work together.
Things like having tournament results with descriptions of how each battle went, builds used and players.
Although i do hate the build cloning stuff, its going to go around anyway, through forums and wiki, so theres nothing wrong with having a few of the latests farms included.
You could also add game updates, skill balances, Guild of the week etc, etc.

A sort of summary/report of developments in PvE (farming included) wouldn't be entirely out of place. Guru as it is runs around like a retarded mongoose after every update/new area trying to figure out what is going on, so it could be quite contributory to have something like this set out.
Ideally I'd like to have staff members whose job it is to do these (or to have done, when the game was far more active), but we can't have it all.

1. Do you think this is a good idea? Do you have any suggestions?
2. How would you prefer the magazine to be? (Printed, for a small amount, with a possibility of subscriptions so you would get it a few days before the online copy is released / released as PDF, for a smaller amount, or for free / other?) 3. Would you be interested? |
2. I would like to receive it by mail. And free.
3. Yes I would be interested

Hi GWGuru,
The idea would be a monthly (or bi-monthly) magazine with all the latest updates in the farming community: new builds, areas, strategies, everything. It would be designed, and there would be plenty of images to make it very comprehensible, and of course every guide would be reviewed and tested many times. And, thinking about it, I don't think the guide should be restricted to farming, perhaps it should be as much PvP as PvE. But basically, the idea is to keep the community up to date with a synthesis of all current trends, ideas, and other stuff going on around the game. |

Perhaps I'm not understanding you right but, isn't the Wiki and Guru exist for this purpose? I don't see the need to have a magazine that puts the 2 websites together, it's easier just to leave the information on the Internet where it's freely accessable imo.(Instead of a magazine where you gotta go to a bookstore)
|
The fansites and wikis would have all the information, while something like this would be more of a highlights section of new concepts/builds/whatever.

It wouldn't be so bad as long as most are knowlegable about and if this is for GW2 I would wait as it will be soloable anyway no need for heros or hench.I would just make a website and get some people to write artricles for it but as I said.We don't know what GW2 will be like so it is hard to implement an idea now instead instead of just waiting it out.

Hi GWGuru, I had an idea last day (for GW2) and I'd need some community feedback on it. Some of you know me for writing The Art of Underworld, and I had started working on a website project called The Mists, which was abandoned. I figured I could perhaps reuse that name (The Mists) for a guild wars farming magazine. The idea would be a monthly (or bi-monthly) magazine with all the latest updates in the farming community: new builds, areas, strategies, everything. It would be designed, and there would be plenty of images to make it very comprehensible, and of course every guide would be reviewed and tested many times. But basically, the idea is to keep the community up to date with a synthesis of all current trends, ideas, and other stuff going on around the game. Now, three questions (I would add a poll, but GWGuru forums won't allow it): 1. Thanks! |
As Avarre pointed out, there is a difference my idea and fan forums/wikis. The magazine would be written by competent people and it would be a really reliable source of info, plus everything information will be pertinent (unlike forums). It's essentially a well laid-out, designed magazine, with a lot of pictures and all the good info in the same place, every bit of it being as good as the other and for many sectors of the game (PvE, farming, GvG, HA, TA, for instance).
Of course you can say forums, but generally you won't get many guides like The Art of Underworld (to quote my own work, but you have to admit) in wikis and forums.

I find all the necessary info I need from various forums and Wiki and have no need of any magazines (which I assume you will charge money for). I saw these scams on ebay and yahoo auction sites all the time during my play of EQ2. People taking information off of forums that OTHERS contributed and combined them into an organized format and then put up rediculous prices from $9.99 to $29.99 lol. But, if you're going to give these magazines out for FREE I see no issues with that.

1. Do you think this is a good idea? Do you have any suggestions?
It's a nice idea, but not so much "builds". Preferably, it would be something like... "Skill of the day/week" when you discuss uses for that skill, useful synergies in various situations with small examples. Perhaps have several such skills (one from each profession?)
As everybody here knows, giving people ready-made builds that they don't understand leads to absolutely useless players when something changes.
Another useful thing would be descriptions of areas, the enemies, general feel of the zone, etc. Similar to the wiki pages we have now, but with actual advice to clearing/adventuring through it rather than just objective info. Maps, patrol routes, bounties.
2. How would you prefer the magazine to be? (Printed, for a small amount, with a possibility of subscriptions so you would get it a few days before the online copy is released / released as PDF, for a smaller amount, or for free / other?)
Online free copy. Too few people would pay for international delivery, and restricting it to whatever country you live in would suck
You COULD make a paper copy, maybe with added information for the people who want to have it. But if you don't offer free online copies, it will just get spread around, because people do that.
You can probably choose something like lulu.com for publishing. You make cash - which could go for prizes or just paying the Employee of the Month, and the result is a very nice-looking magazine.
3. Would you be interested?
Yup. I don't know that I could contribute (if it was for GW, yeah, but I don't know if I like GW2 since I haven't played it yet), but if this project happens, I'll hear of it and get myself involved.

Alright, I will drop the idea of selling the magazine (it was only to pay the paper costs anyway, because I think paper support is better than screen but it looks like it's not gonna get the GWGuru seal of approval). SmartBomb, you gave me a good idea. What about an article about economy predictions/tendancies?

Basically, it's all very scattered to someone who just plays the game casually. If someone actually researched this stuff then reported and predicted what could happen, it would really help a lot of people.
o
yeah like anet...one stop shop on nerfing farming builds...sorryi had to lol
