Me: male
Characters: 50/50
It comes down to how you view your characters. If you see them as an extension of you, then a reverse gender char my seem icky. If you see them as someone/something to guide and take care of (or boss around! ) then the gender may not matter.
I tend to follow both views at various times. The "me" chars are all male and the rest are ones I'm helping. Being the Charlie to a bunch of angels is not a bad way to pass the time.

Though in my case, ever since Nightfall introduced the per-character title-grind the "me" has stepped off screen (deleted) and only the "angels" have all the actions now.

male.
mesmer x2, monk, elementalist = females
ritualist, paragon, warrior, necromancer, ranger, assassin = males
so 6 males, 4 females.
i'm not patriarchal, but i tend to think that melee/physical damage classes fit male characters better in appearance, and spellcasting classes look better female.
only exceptions are ritualist and necromancer, both of which i think of as sadistic/self-harming spellcasters which are better suited for males.
as a note: i don't connect to any of my characters, i typically don't put myself in the shoes of whoever i'm playing in RPG type games...moreso in FPS and other shooters.

im female and i have 15 female characters and 1 male.
however, the male character i have is only a mule, and was only made because elonian male ele hair green looks like a chia pet and i found it rather funny
.
i would feel kind of strange playing a male character, and i only like a few of their armor sets. being an armor addict, the armor sets r very important. hehe

And while I have both male and female characters, I have more females than males because they often have better armor and appearances than the male models.
Off topic, but related due to looks: the Rit Ancient armor set should be for Necs, don't you think?

The only char that's female on my main account's roster is a warrior - I didn't like the war armors until recently (NF made me regret not having a male one, and EotN even more...) at the point I made another war, male this time. But I use my female one more. |
Anyways, i'm starting to get back into my ranger and he's a guy and so am I, he used to be a girl, for a week, then changed him to male. I'm glad I did Male FoW> female FoW imho.

I have no idea why some people are so insecure about their sexuality when it comes to playing games. Especially when they try to justify it. Why bother caring about what people who play their opposite gender? Or even yourself? People who judge others on what gender they play are to me, very closed-minded people.
Male, plays both males and females characters.
