"In the Year 2525 ...
Legion Magnus
... will Guild Wars still survive?"
What will GW1 be like, say, a year into GW2 launch (in the Year 2018)? Dust and tumbleweeds ripping through towns, even in the Far Shiverpeaks. The sound of crickets long gone. The yaks escaped and roaming free throughout Tyria in wild packs, brazenly attacking any who dare cross their path.
How 'rich' will the few people left be? And what will they do with their stacks of Armbraces? When Gray Dye costs 30 Armbraces to buy at the Merchant. When even spamming in Kamadan becomes - pointless.
What will happen when there is only one person left in all the world. He/She has it all available to them. The treasures of many lands become meaningless and burdensome. Until the world shrinks as servers are decommissioned. When all that is left is but one town - Yaks Bend. Where the perpetual roasting of a pig which none can eat becomes the only sound in the world, that besides the everlasting scream of that one ... last ... person.
Who will it be? Will it be you?
Now seriously, I wonder how wealth will be accumulated and utilized as the population dwindles. There will certainly be many, many people who will simply stop logging in and their items and gold will be frozen in stasis until the final server is turned off. Just simply looking forward, I wonder what GW1 will look like 2-3 years after GW2 comes out, especially since there will be no comprehensive transfer between the two (unfortunately, and the ambiguous HoM notwithstanding). How long will GW1 survive? A long time, I hope.
What will life in GW1 be like in the years to come?

Won't be me, Guild Wars was my first and last MMO. I'll most likely go back to playing RTS games.
As for what life will be like, dunno, I'm not psychic.

As long as the servers are up people will be playing. Weather or not anet decides to add/change things in 2-3 years we wont know. There will be SEVERAL people who will hate GW2 but love GW1 and continue to play. I for one will always be playing as long as the servers are up. Diablo 2 servers are still up . People still play that and thats been out for nearly 10 years!
jiggles
The servers will be shutoff and the odd's of anet allowing people to have their own servers is ridiculos to none. So no onewill be able to play.

I'll be there and all will be more relaxed, more friendly and the few players will be grouping together and do all the elite missions with no rage quitting people!
Items will be shared and nobody will care about the value of them and merchants will go broke!
It will be the real Utopia and everybody will be playing in harmony and happiness will be all around us!
Perhaps not, but it's nice to dream!

ANet will come out with a new deal for the trilogy retail, and people will continue to buy the game. Others will continue to work towards their HoM rewards for Guild Wars 2. And of course... there will be a lot fewer players.
Everyone with money will probably be playing GW2, so the economy will go through a rollercoaster as people sell all their valuables for minis and the like.

If ANet takes down the servers people will be pissed. We will get to hear about it here on Guru. GW is a online only game, there is no offline play. So the servers are a must to be able to play GW. I think ANet will keep them up so long as someone is playing but skill updates or any kind of upgrades are out of the question. They will have 1 or 2 people left to maintain the server for GW1 and that is it.
jiggles
Why would you keep up the servers (which isnt cheap) to please 1-2 people when you could close it and save yourself alot of money?
Yawgmoth
I can see GW1 servers going as long as GW2 will be alive, that is long long years. The game will never be the same again, but some players will never find a better game or even want to find one, and they will like to stay.
But no hardcore, don't expect the last remaining players to be rich, thats highly unlikely. The greatest treasures, priceless one of a kind items and stacks of valuables will just rot on inactive accounts, while the players who enjoy amassing virtual wealth will do that all over again in GW2 or somewhere else.

Every smart scientist and evangalist knows the world ends Dec 21st 2012 anyways so no need to worry about those long dates ahead. Heck you may barely get to play GW2.
legacyofkain85
new game comes, old game goes, learn to deal with it,it's just the way it is.People will end up playing and enjoying guild wars 2 and heck before u know deja vú ,guild wars 3 will come and so on,like i said best thing to do is to adjust to the situation.

Because there are going to be more then 1-2 players playing. Just because GW2 comes out does not mean everyone will upgrade. As stated before it could be a huge flop. People may like GW1 way better then GW2 and stay with it. ANet will not be dumb enough to close down GW1 servers anytime soon.
Elder III
there will be people left playing it and while the GW1 community will be much smaller it will also be far friendlier and more enjoyable to play (at least for the h/h PVE meisters out there). XD
Zahr Dalsk
Nox's servers closed down after a while, I remember. Another company took up the task of hosting them, though admittedly regular games are user-hosted (aside from Morden's arena faggotry, but those don't count because they aren't Quest mode). There are about sixty people total who still play, maybe less, and usually only around 14 online at any given time.
Anyways, yeah, I hope that even if ArenaNet does close down GW, we're left with some way to continue accessing it. Even a small community can still be quite active.

lol, will the human race still be around in 2525 is a better question ;-) and no, gw will not be around, lol. gaming will be taken to virtual 3D games where it feels like ur actually in the game. (can u say Matrix gaming? everyone will know ur a gamer because u will be walking around with a thing on the back of ur neck.) =D
Legion Magnus
Sorry, I've been watching a lot of "Millennium" on the Chiller network lately.
I like your vision! One can hope for such a Utopia. As it was in the Beginning. And I think We'd hear Louis Armstrong singing "What a Wonderful World".
I agree with your comments, as well. One Server, over in the corner, still running that old game. The Techies wondering when they will be allowed to shut it down for good. And the rare antiquities lost to the sands of virtual time ...

"There will be no monthly fee associated with Guild Wars 2 to keep up the tradition of Guild Wars. Mike O'Brien has stated that expansions or mini-expansions are more likely than standalone campaigns, but a final decision hasn't been made yet.
Guild Wars 2 will be written to run on computers with mid-range gaming specifications, but will have higher requirements than Guild Wars.
The original Guild Wars will continue to be supported after release of Guild Wars 2. This will include continued holiday events and tournaments."- GWW

Why does it matter? Since the year....2007(?) GW was already old. Once D2 comes out, if any real gamer is still actively playing GW, let alone any of the other plethora of exciting and new games that will come out in the interim, then they deserved to be smacked.
Its like asking if a dog will bark in 16 years. Yes there will still be people playing as long as the servers are up because guildwars is free2play. But GW is already insignificant and speculating about whether or not something will be active in 16 years when its already been all-but-shelved by its' producers is useless.

I've been playing Final Fantasy 3/6 for the last 15 years and haven't touched 12. Does that make me less of a gamer (in the new socially acceptable sense) as well?

Honestly, I don't like what little about GW2 that we know. It already seems that it's going to lack a lot of what I like about GW. Yeah, I'm still going to get it and play it. But I've a feeling I'm going to stick with GW1 for a very long time.
AKB48
People wouldn't care much about GW when GW2 comes out, GW is pretty dried up without area updates(adding a new area to the game, with new weapons, monsters etc.) like these seen in REAL MMO(Anet refuses to call GW a "MMO"). And the weekly update just don't do the trick. Anet should use the server for GW and add it to GW2, it will benefit both the consumers and Anet itself.
Raccoon
I can't help myself but ROFL every time I hear Anet say "Don't worry, Guild Wars will still be up and we promise to keep the servers running whilst GW2 is around".
You people really think that's how it's going to work? The original Guild Wars servers will stay up for a short period of time while everyone slowly moves over to the new game. Then when the game becomes practically empty, anet will lose interest in supporting it and cut it off, giving us some tragic story about how in order to sustain GW2 we have to shut down the old servers.
They give us a free character slot in GW2, servers are closed, and we never hear from it again.

516 years.. Hm.
In 1493, Columbus had just discovered America (1492). I bet nobody then would have expected the country that would one day form on that land to become the most powerful country in the world.
We have a lot bigger guns now. Dunno if we're going to be around in 516 years (I'm not going to be for sure! :P).

in the year 2525, you switch one your computer, log into guild wars and find you are playing the final moment of Tabula Rasa, we lost and the server is closed foreve :P~

okay,
In the year 2525, my great great great great great great great great great great great great grand children found in the backyard of the family estate a piece of paper with an email address, and a strings of numbers and alphabets, which they don't know what its for, so they begin to search, and found GLINT! well, in 2525, one would expect computer games would be like real life, so they fights and look for more clues :P~

And, I actually considered posting this in Off Topic since my little story might be misconstrued. I simply wanted to see what people thought about the impact of a new game on the existing GW economy looking forward (speaking of evolution). Once GW2 is launched what happens to the collective wealth in GW1? How does it 'evolve'?

I recon something brililant should happen on release of gw2 in gw1....
dragons appear as a vision of the future and start killing players....not very imaginitive i know but it would be cool.
I will continue to play gw1 aslong as the servers are still up. Im gunna party and spend every last penny i got, eat all sweets and drink all alcohol i have been saving up over the years

Doesn't the world end in 2012?
Chieftain Heavyhand
That is when the Mayan calendar ends, most people forget that the Mayans were brought to their knees by the Spaniards so maybe it just means they didn't have a chance to finish adding to it.
Not sure when the servers will be shut down but just like the end of the world when it happens it will happen and there want be much we can do about it.
GW like life should be enjoyed to the fullest and instead of dreading the end enjoy the now.

What you people seem to forget is Anet doesn't decide how long the servers stay on for GW it is NCsoft who decides it is there servers and their publishings. That is why Auto Assualt and Tabula Rasa went bye bye. NCsoft decided it was time. Thus, when GW2 gets popular and the GW servers are empty and wasted GW also will come falling down.
