GW easily has another 4 years left
I hate to use RuneScape as a comparison but when they released RS2 in 2004, they kept RS1 servers open for paying members, they also delete inactive accounts from RS1 after one month but it still has about 100 players online at any time. Obviously inactive accounts won't be deleted from GW I hope, but there's still going to be a heck of a loyal fanbase that will stick with the original game.

ArenaNet is not promising to keep the GW servers going forever. What they have said is that they have no plans to shut them off as soon as GW2 is released.
As a company interested in a profit (they are not a charity for gamers), they will keep the servers active as long as people are still buying the game. People who are bored with GW will never come back, but even now we see new players all the time, either ingame or posting in the forum. I don't think that will change.
GW is a great game that has low pc requirements, fairly inexpensive to purchase and free-to-play, so very popular with people who don't want to buy a high-end pc and spend $60/game and $10-$15/month for online. That won't change.

Figured someone would remember the song!
And, off-topic. Taking some GW liberties with the lyrics, on the eve of 4th GW Anniversary...
Now it's been 10,000 years, Man has QQ'd a billion tears, For what, he never knew. Now man's reign is through. But through Nightfall, The twinkling of starlight. So very far away, Maybe it's only 2005
(actual lyrics)
Now it's been 10,000 years, Man has cried a billion tears, For what, he never knew. Now man's reign is through. But through eternal night, The twinkling of starlight. So very far away, Maybe it's only yesterday
Some interesting trivia, this song was Number One on the US charts when Man first landed on the Moon, Apollo 11 Moon Mission, July 20th, 1969.

Being narrow-minded and critical only makes you look ignorant.

And I actually thought everyone would know why the title is "in the year 2525"... Must be getting old...

I did catch myself thinking 'I wonder if they'll make a special effort on the tenth year birthday presents?' the other day.

I moved to GW from Dungeon Siege. I made the move as DS was dieing and most of my friends from DS recommended GW. Most of my GW friends have moved on and left no forwarding address. When GW2 comes out, I will only buy it if it comes as highly recommended as GW was. The only problem being, who will be recommending it? My empty friends list?
There will come a day that I will not turn on my computer, will not log on to GW. Instead, I will be bouncing the grandkids on my knee, or teaching them how to fish, build a campfire, setup a tent, or will just be sitting on the porch watching the deer run across my backyard.
Pinball, Pong, Pac Man, Galaxia, Gorf, Missile Command, Mario Bros., Doom, Quake, Diablo, Civilization 3, Age of Empires 2 & 3, Dungeon Siege, Guild Wars, they make quite a gamer's history. They all were the best, during their times. Someday, in the not too distant future, this gamer will call it quits.

I think as long as they are selling copies; they'll keep servers running in some shape or form. You can still re-install diablo 2 and log into useast or west and there is actually people still there playing at any given time.
I wouldn't be surprised if anet made changes where you could download your account file to your pc to save your information to get it off their servers, and re-upload it if you wanted to play again. Something along those lines.

I totally got the reference
When GW2 comes out, mini prices will go through the roof, ectos will go through the floor, as people try and get their hands on cold hard cash in order to fill out the HoM on every last toon. I don't really care, as my HoM's are already done, and I really don't care how much money I have (though having a lot is nice ).

One day, far into the future, should ANet ever decide to sunset GW1 it would be nice if they provided a client-side only 'load' of Guild Wars which didn't require a Server. This would only benefit PvE'rs, but it would be nice to be able launch GW and make the Lich Lord meet his fate once again.
By then, it probably won't run on Windows 12, but who knows?
