Why doesn't anet fix armour clippings etc.?

I love my horns that stick out of my cape on my Canthan armor for my necro- Gives that don't touch me feeling.

Honestly the seamstresses and tailors moved to GW 2 and are currently setting up shop. Unless you have a Miss Jackson equipment failure and a boob pops out nothing will be fixed.

i agree with the fact that these things should have been fixed but i also know they won't be... as for the hair and bandanna that cannot be fixed because they essentially replace your char's hair with a bandanna. if you want hair every1 would have to have the same hair.. like the ice crown

My main (ele) has:
1: hair clips cape
2: cape clips robes
3: staff clips cape

It never bothered me, just made me laugh. Then I got used to it, and now I never even stop to think about it anymore. It's right there in my face the whole time I'm playing, but at the same time, its like the problem isn't there at all. I no longer pay attention to it.

It would be niced if they fixed armor/weapon/cape/hair clips. But at the same time, as others have already said, there are other things that are higher on the priority list than these minor graphics isues.

I think that would take up way too much time and effort to do. Ya it happens, but maybe its just the graphics engine. Something to prevent in GW2, but not a realistic or really important thing in GW1. Cmon, imagine trying to fix the cape clipping when the armor has spikes in the back... I'm no programmer but I dont think its that easy.

Even if they just made it so we could actually TRY the armour on our characters so we could see for ourselves the clipping issues before we made the decision to purchase. I'd be happy with that.

Two reasons:

1. Anet are a bunch of cheap b******s. That means they aren't going to spend any more money on something they've released than they absolutely have to. When they realized the fans would keep buying games that have clipping issues, they knew they wouldn't have to spend a dime to fix them.

2. Creating new content generates more interest than fixing something that is broken. So unless something is so broken it has to be fixed and cheap as well (look how long it took them to fix that abbadon's mouth NPC) making new things takes priorities.

BONUS POINT: Has good, quality customer service ever been a major point of ANet's business? I think not. Plus fixing a bug would require them to admit they've made a mistake so you can't consider it likely for them to ever fix a bug instead of adding new content that'll probably be broken and they'll never fix that either.

Fortunately GW2 will be out in two years, they'll close down GW the day before 2 releases, and sweep everything under the rug with their wow clone.

From Linsey's FAQ:

My "insert armor piece here" clips with my "insert body part here", why has this not been fixed? Will you fix it?
A: General clipping issues are usually considered minor and don't often get fixed after release. Right now, all our artists are working on Guild Wars 2 and when we do get artist time, we'd generally like to use it for making cool new stuff.

That's the typical Anet philosophy, instead of fixing broken stuff, LETS MAKE MORE BROKEN STUFF!

If you can find a way to completely get rid of this problem, you'd be a millionaire.
Dynamic hair and clothing would help the problem if you could get them right, but you'd still have ridged pieces to worry about and those things require a lot of computer resources. You could also tweak animations a little for some armors and hair combos, but that might not solve all the problems.

You could also preplan your weapons, armors, hair, and animations from the beginning so that all the items have to fit within certain parameters and then set the parameters so that clipping won't happen, but that'd take a dedication to quality as well as good communication.

By the way... From a modeling standpoint... Clipping isn't exactly as easy as you'd like to think it is to fix... It takes a lot of trial and error just for tiny little things, and even then when you fix it for one thing, it is messed up for another thing.

Basically, the whole thing revolves around a biped skeleton. Like, lets say...

......o
../--|--\
.x....|....x
......-
.....|.|
.....|.|
.....-.-

Something like that... Not very complex, just a couple bones, nowhere near a real human skeleton, but enough to give fairly good amount of motions.

The whole rigging process involves telling each tiny minute little section of every piece of armor and skin just how much exactly to stick to each bone.

Example: If you ever so slightly weight the breasts to the feet, they will jiggle when the character walks.

The problem with clipping is, it's near impossible to make a model work with everything out there. The goal is pretty much making it compatible with *most* of the other models as possible.

Even when you're getting into semantics with the thought that it's just one such and such that clips with YOUR armor, consider how many armors it does NOT clip with. Generally, it's a better trade off to work this way, than not clipping with your armor/hair/shield/whatever, but clipping with all the others.

Could keep going ad infinitum, but I think that's fairly clear enough. A lot of work, very tough to get good results and not likely to happen. Just about every game has clipping somewhere, it's just a cruel fact of current technology.

While it was near impossible to test the gazillions of armor set combinations, they still did a terribaad job on that - there are plenty of issues with just 1 set of armor, and the worst of all and easiest to test issues come from the way characters hold various items. For example the infamous Pronged Fan...

Gameplay changes will always take priority over aesthetic changes and considering there are so many gameplay changes which need to be brought out ANET isn't going to waste time on cosmetics.

Well, yes.. Game studios and artists in the industry generally are on a "time over quality" schedule, they're constantly rushed. Time is money.

So, they can get it done at 98% quality if they spend x time, or 90% quality if they spend y time. The powers that be always choose the 90%.

Why? Because if it takes hours longer to perfect something that most people won't notice or care about, they're still having to pay those artists, and they could be more productive money-wise by making them move on to other stuff.

The artists know this, and they're pretty much always rushed. Professional artist work is all about how good you can make something in the fastest foreseeable amount of time possible.

About the arguement that other games have clipping errors aswel; true but not nearly as many as I've seen in GW. Even some of the FoW sets have huge clipping errors. Though I understand that the artists are being rushed during creation, it doesn't really matter who is to blame internally. The fact is there are hundreds of clipping errors (some almost 4 years old) in a game that is for a large part about aesthetics, the PvE side at least (which is huge).

People pay large amounts of ingame money for armor/weapons that have the exact same stats as the cheapest parts, all for the better looks. In other games if I got armor that had a clipping error but the stats were better I would'nt care as much. I'm not saying that equal stats are a bad thing, just saying that when it's all about looks clipping errors become a bigger issue.

Then on the other hand I also understand that not paying a montly fee has to have some drawback, and the not fixing of graphical errors in existing content seems to be one of them.

Since they are working with BLOBS this kind of issues are hard to fix and I think that it is also quite time consuming. I guess it will never happen since it is too little for too much cost and effort.

Female mesmer Norn armor really needs a fix. She gets a hole in her butt when I zoom out. It's terrible.

They should up the textures on some armors as well. The aforementioned Norn armor's texture is a fuzzy, detail-less mess. This is only one example. For "elite" armor, this is unacceptable.

It is just piss poor that the male 15K gladiator armor even got released with the infamous piss spot on the skirt in place.

And they also did not fix it years later.
This clipping issue is even visible if players are standing still.

Now someone tell me their testers only looked at the armor from the rear or nobody noticed it. That they missed something so obvious could be a hint that they are part of the skill balancing team. :>
