Guild Wars is on steam, but what about those of us who already have steam with a game account before this? Will there be a way to integrate our original game accounts with steam?

Steam and guild wars have seperate cdkey system, so it means you wont be able to add an existing account to steam (not counting a simple shortcut to launch the game).

I'm a steam nub, what advantages are there to "intergrating" as opposed to adding it as a non-steam game?
Abedeus
God damn it, you have beat me to it.
Just noticed this... Just too bad you can't buy CoH/V yet, or the expansion packs. Lineage 2 for 8 euro? Are you kidding me? In Poland it's at least 13 EUR now.
You can download the game off the Steam, it always updates whenever an update is available (you don't have to run the game), at least I think so. And you can buy with PayPal.

Steam is bad and expensive.

Just noticed it. Now all my steam friends can join me while I'm playing. Weeeeh.
Seriously, maybe this will entice some new people to pick up and play Guild Wars.
Now we only need Achievements, haha.
NCsoft Offers Award-Winning Lineup On Steam.
Can't buy EotN though, only the three seperate Campaigns or the Trilogy.

What I'm really confused about is the consistancy between Steam and the online GWs store, how will the two sync?
E.g you buy the initial game from steam but upgrade in the GWs Store, or buy 1 pack from steam then another from steam. :/

Guild wars is the game i most likly will be playin when on my computer, all my mates wander why i even own a steam account. If there is a way of syncing them then maybe i can rack up my hours
maraxusofk
Man I hope you can change passwords and email through steam, because ncsoft support really blows.

What is steam? Some new sensation? I never even heard of it, and their website I just read makes no sense.

Steam is pretty good.

Steam is to PCs what Xbox Live Marketplace is to Xbox.
It's a game digital delivery and community system for PCs, you can buy games with it online and have it downloaded through it's (very nice) download manager to your computer and launch it as soon as it's done. The best part is that it will auto-update all your games for you, and there is even a community side to it where some stats of some games can be tracked on your community pages, groups can be setup for you and your friends from each different game to organize yourselves with.
Steam is also account based, so if you install steam on say....a new machine, you can re-download all your games with it at no cost, as they will already be flagged as purchased, much like XBL.

Seems like this could be a pretty big deal. It would be better for guildwars sales if it was able to be integrated, then there would be a ton of advertising for guild wars in the form of "Friend is now playing Guild Wars"
I think distributing on steam is a good way to get a decent number of quick sales - it's a very convenient way to find and purchase a game on impulse.
Unfortunately I didn't see any of the micro-transactions that anet offers in the guildwars store.

I agree that Steam is pretty good. To the person that said Steam is expensive: just buy the weekend deals . Overall they have pretty good prices (compared to stores here) and the 'install Steam on another computer and you're free to download any game you purchased before' saves time and effort.

Steam is a retailer for games. You buy games through it and download them similar to what you do with Guildwars. The only difference is that all your games are linked to one account. All the games you purchase (it does not matter the publisher) will be under your steam account.
That's just the basic.
I'm surprised you never heard about Steam.. You know what HL2 is??
How about Half Life 2, Team Fortress, Counterstrike, etc. ?

I just feel it would be better to have it fully integrated as a steam game.

xfire--->steam for communicating with friends/showign them what you're playing

I have a feeling that the Steam service for Guild Wars will just be a service where your CD key just gets registered on Steam so it will show up as a native game, and the rest of the game is handled through ArenaNet like usual. In other words, even if you had no Steam activation, you could probably get the same experience by starting up Steam and then adding the launch shortcut as a non-Steam game.
Guild Wars updates every single week if only to change the login message for the weekend event, and sometimes the game is patched several times in an hour (i.e., the kind of patch that says "Please restart your client" afterwards). I seriously doubt that Valve wants to deal with a patch system that comes through so frequently, nor is Steam setup to really handle the streaming update system that Guild Wars uses.
This is just my speculation, and I could be wrong. But it seems unlikely that Valve is going to sign up to host the image data that could change anytime there's a skill balance, special holiday, or message update.

They will probably host the small client download you can also get from anet's website. Which means the majority is downloaded/streamed through anet itself.
Sleeper Service
1. considering just how BAD Steams update system is [Two worlds and CoH 2GIG "update" anyone]
2. adding the fact that Steam/Valve treats European clients like s**t with their whole monetary exchange BS.
3. and since it really adds nothing to what we already have [Anets client is light and you can access your account from multiple pcs]
Its altogether a bad idea to buy this on Steam IMO.

I have a steam account, I am going to have to remember my account and password though... So this means that Counter-strike, Half-life and guildwars are all rolled up into one program. That's ill-tanks!
Integration is going to be tough though.

It is all about keeping an eye out for the deals. I managed to get the complete Dawn Of War series, excluding 2, for $20. That's 4 games for $5 apiece.
As for GW on Steam, eh it is cool though it doesn't affect me as I have everything you can get at the moment.

And the people who haven't played Portal yet should buy it on the spot. Along with Half-Life 2. And it's expansions. And Team Fortress 2.

Its great that GW will be available on Steam now. This will certainly bring some more people to the game.

I recently bought 'Warhammer: Dawn of War2' which is a good game btw and it came with Steam and games for windows live. Steam asked to create an account and thusfar it seems to be free. Maybe because it was in the price of the warhammer box. I'm new to it so don't know yet.
What sounds interesting is that one can buy with dollars instead of euros from what I understand from a poster above.
Steam doesn't recognise my current GW installation though. So do we need to buy all the gw campaigns again? If so no ty. I will further play gw on my main account I've been using for 4 years then.
Is this one of Anet's tricks to sell more copies again? Just wondering.

Anyone know if they're gonna add Steam support to Macs? That would help them reach a wider market, too.

Steam? Well... the fella in this Flash animation:
http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/posting
States that:
"OMFG STEAM R0X0RS TEH BIG ONE!!!111"
So... It's just something Valve came up with to sell stuff and fight against piracy. Works quite right for them when it comes to online playing.

I've never bothered to even look at steam.. Sounded like garbage to me.
