Also, I think some of the probability math on the rare drops is off, here. The rare items all have a drop rate of well less than 1% - let's say about .25% on average for any of the minis, weapons, and moss egg (EL Cottontail is much less, I'm going to assume, but it doesn't have any droprate data on the unofficial wiki). That means that, on average, you have a one in 400 chance of getting one of those.
So Fril would be an example of someone who was extraordinarily lucky. The people who just get summoning stones, candies, and ale week after week are an example of the average with Nick gifts. I got a Mini Yakkington the very second week Nick was around and yes, I was incredibly lucky with that. Best thing I've gotten since then have been kegs of ale.
Just because there's a chance of something happening, doesn't mean it's guaranteed to. It just means that it's possible.

Odd week... Tried the quick "out of the Bone Palace" farm yesterday for about an hour and got nothing. I hate the Hidden City of Ahhhgahghadhadkdkillmyself so I basically told myself I'd skip it.
Out of bordom last night I tried the desolation farm area again, going so far as to pick on the other groups that spawn on the way to Nich (can still do it from the wurm, just takes some patience) and I figured ...why not? Got one to drop after about another hour. Said eff it again.
Tried today... same run since I kinda like running around in the wurm anyway... got 4 in the next 5 runs I did. *shrug* Guess it all just comes down to luck.
As for what Nicholas gave me: Disco balls, Rando Summoning Stones, Bunny tonics, and blue candies. Eh... could be worse.

Well... another 70 djinns killed tonight in 3 different areas, of which Ruby's were about 50%... not a single Ruby Essence has dropped... I've gotten 5 Sapphire essences though... still only have the one Ruby Essence from last night... and there I killed 125 djinns in the Hidden City.
Something really dodgy going on here... I am inclined to agree with the other poster that said ANet screws with the drop rates when Nicks needs the items that week... or the farming code sucks SOOO bad when more people are farming the same areas / item, the contention simply increases making the likelihood of drops slimmer.

To put it bluntly, I wouldn't put these methods past them.. they may have done it inadvertently or deliberately (due to people farming 10's of accounts weekly to increase their chances of rare drops and perhaps not liking it), but this is utter tripe.
EDIT: They should change this week's item to Ivory Bow's, since that's all the bastard Ruby Djinns are dropping for me... I would have had enough for 2 accounts already!

I dunno if anet does it anymore but they used to have a warning come up on drop rates getting worse if you farmed the same area over and over.. the drops do get worse over time if you keep farming the same mobs- ever notice the first time you go into an area after a long time, the drops are fantastic.. like every mob drops a item on a solo farm
now re-run it few times.. you'll see it will get to the point of almost no drops at all
also when you spike all the mobs at the same time the drops get nerfed, why should spread the damage around a little before if your using aoe- even in hm the nerf still kicks in after a few runs

2 more long runs in Dahja Vestibule (up to the room full of gold) for about 1h got me 3 more Ruby essence (and 6 more sapphire ones IIRC). Doable but not as easy as usual.

I just used the generic spirit spam build with my ranger and soloed the line of djinn's up to nick, avoiding the double saph mob's. got em all in less than 2 hours. My last run got 2 in one run. maybe I was lucky?

This week so far isn't turning out too bad. A guildie and I got 5 in 10 trips, so after tonight hopefully we'll have the other 5. I just don't think Nicholas was intended to be a full time job, especially considering the "gifts" you get.

My guildies and I were lucky in that we had enough of the ruby djinn essences in storage to get Nick's gifts this week. Got lots of fireworks, some merchant summoning stones....and a mini brown rabbit.
All three of us really want a mini Yakkington, and instead we have gotten a mini Gwen Chan and a mini rabbit. And about 4 Traveller's staves, and 3 of the Bo Staves, 3 vampiric dragon swords, and one icy dragon sword.
This is across 5 accounts, and we have only missed getting gifts twice since Nicholas started handing them out. I know some people have said they haven't really gotten any of the rares from Nick. Looking at the list of what we have gotten, it seems we have been a bit blessed even if we don't get the one thing we really want.
Oh well, there is always next week.

What worked for me last night (got 5 in less than an hour) was to just kill the 1-2 Djinn right at the Bone Palace entrance using the worm and then resigning. Maybe it's just anecdotal but it seemed that if I did it too fast nothing would drop, but if I waited like 20 seconds after zoning at least SOMETHING would drop. In HM was was also getting a few golds and ele tomes too (and a minor soul reaping rune!).

It's the way the loot nerf was implemented. Speed of kill reduces your drops and when you first zone you start off as if you have just max killed.

Got my 5 in about 40 minutes taking down the djinn in Alkali Pan. Silly thing is I got 3 essences in the second run, then lots and lots of runs without any drops, and then 2 more in the last few ones. Only got 15 summoning+5 merch stones and 5 myst. tonics from nick today tho.

Nope, nothing, nada. Spent about 90 minutes on several locations, including the solo locations mentioned. But for the 3th time in 4 weeks I gave up. Next time I'll stick to the 30 minutes rule; if 1/5 of the requested items or more are dropped in 30 minutes its worth to continue. Else its a waste of time

So I am kinda new compared to most if not all people here. Is it really unique what he is looking for every week? Or were there earlier times he needed ruby djinn essences?

As far as i know there hasnt been a repetition. Yet...
Due to the big amount of collectible stuff it will probably take some time to run through them all ( as i guess they'll want to keep it unique as long as possible [ giving "GW is dead" criers less to complain about]) but they must come back sometime although it might be longer than a year.
PS: i wrote it on my iphone + english isnt my first language therefore excuse spelling or grammar mistakes

There might be a way to farm the ruby key boss in the Dasha mission. I had an ASSN that hadn't done the mission yet, and I wanted to get that quest to pop more djinn, so I completed the mission in NM. With 8 H/H, it died and dropped the ruby key and an essence.
I tried farming it in NM/HM by going 8 H/H to it, then flag them away and solo it (and kill the ~3 ruby djinn on the way). About 5 tries NM, nada (runs took ~3 minutes). About 2 tries HM, nada (~5 minute runs).
It seems no matter what I do, I get about 1 ruby essence drop every 20-30 minutes farming. Oh well, 2 so far, not gunna worry too hard about this week...

Well now... tonight is a much better night... I managed to get 15 Ruby Essences in just over 2 hours of farming... with a total of 130 Djinns killed (which were mostly Ruby's). 6x 20min runs.
I ignored the Sapphires if they were alone or the last left in a group.
I still got another 7 Sapphires too, about 10 golds and 300 dust.
