Profit from Prophecies
ajc2123
So I took it upon myself to partake in an experiment revolving around my favorite campaign. I wanted to know exactly how much gold I could make in one run through of prophecies. Here is what I did.
(This was before books for added gold btw)
Spent no money at all. I acquired all my weapons and armor from collectors. This way I was assured at least I can't be one shotted by enemies at endgame. I was a WARRIOR so i needed a max weapon, ty collectors.
Used only henchman. Hero's is not a luxery of Proph despite having the other campaigns, I thought it was important to play the game as if I was new.
Only used skills acquired from quest's. Thank goodness prophecies has a lot of these lol.
completed EVERY SINGLE QUEST POSSIBLE (Excluding Titans and UW/FoW, but Including Sorrows Furnace)
Other then going out of my way for quests or areas with quests, I didn't go to places i didn't need to.
Sold every item I got in the most effective way, whether that was from players (certain materials) or merchant.
Completed every mission/bonus.
With all these goals I was proud of myself when I followed every single one. Granted this was all in normal mode so I didn't have too many problems. (Mursaat towers can be annoying without heroes lol) but I did it all the same. Despite being proud of myself I was rather annoyed with the result.
21,875 gold. That's right, only 22k.
I realize the quest rewards weren't that great but it was a large campaign and i expected at least a minimum of 40k
In the end, I still love prophecies the most however, and I realize this number is completely dependent on luck. I challenge everyone to do the same thing, however, with other campaigns as all. Only if you want to of course. What do you think of these results?

I think you could get more from a Hard Mode run doing nothing but missions, and taking care to collect all drops. At a guess I'd say around 70k, give or take a bit.

I find your number of 22k too astoundingly low to be correct. Just how much of the total money that you made did you have to spend on that character to only end up with 22k at the end of it?

Granted I was probably EXTREMLY unlucky.
This is why I want other people to do it, to compare end profit.
DarkWasp
I don't find it hard to believe. Henchies steal every good drop, it seems even more so than heroes do.
Oh and, back in the day, a max weapon with 15^50 was an easy 40k+
Now it's merch or hero fodder

starting a new mesmer in factions tomorrow and will apply same principle and see how it comes up. incidentally for sake of parity on data, did you completely solo with hechies or did you pug/guild help on some missions?

However if you want to go in GWEN and grab gwen vekk and oggy, and subtract any gold aquired on the way, thats fine with me.

you're really unlucky.
or too lazy to pick up drops (especially the ones that can be salvaged for runes).
I started 4 days ago with a necro and i already have around 11k. I haven't done any of the forest missions, and still to beat ring of fire.
11k and yet i already spent on Sig Cap (my next sig purchase is already 400g).
i only identified the blue and the purple (i put the gold drops to my other account to increase wisdom title). no farming done (im working on Survivor and now about 350k exp), just plain very careful game.
no white or black dye dropped so far.
all gold are from loot, identified and sold to merch (no player-to-player trade).
11k.
i feel like Prophecy is cheating on you.
[i spent around 25k on my armor from Faction. I owe the money from my main account.]

Great experiment. Definitely a lot lower than I expected. I was sure you'd be above 30k, but now that I think about it, my first run through the game I was completely poor. Same with my second run...and third...
crazybanshee
Well, I believe it. proph quests give skills, while factions and nf quests give gold and ss/lb points. I think nf is the richest game because every quest gives mad gold. eotn is the same but there's less quests. So yea, I'd believe that about proph.

I can tell you that I did salvage any worthy mat's and runes/insignias.
However I aquired my Kits from storage as well. Guess i forgot to mention a couple things lol.
Yeah I probably got cheated, but thats what I got >_>

I hear Koss demands triple rates. Bastard. I don't think Alesia should qualify for any drops. How many times I cursed her name during prophecies...
Other games give you cash and crutches. Prophecies makes you a better player.

I think that would be slightly low but realistic. Did almost the same as the OP, but not to test it out, just because I don't really care about making gold. I had I think 69k after the 3 main campaigns, but doing almost NO side quests, and spending gold only on nightfall armor and salvage/ID kits.

With low numbers like this your salvage method comes into play.
ID all golds/purples before selling is pretty much taken as read.
Blues/Whites however can make losses, depending on where they came from. Then there's merch cost vs salvaging for matts. (Personally I id golds/purps and blindy merch the rest, far too fidly to do anything else).
20k still seems surprising. Back in the day though people were still "power selling" dye, so perhaps our concept of value has inflated.
An interesting experiment. GJ.

22k honestly doesn't suprise me much for NM. The gold drops for a good deal of Proph are really miniscule, and are divided among the party to boot. I wonder how a complete play through the other campaigns would compare. hmmm....
Evil_Necro
Hmm.. I thought it'll be around 35k and up..
but then again, quests in prophecies don't give out a money.. so.. yeah.. -_-

interesting experiment, I should try that with my pre-searing ranger. I have a question though how much time did you spend in pre, and did you count the money you made there in you calculations??

Of course IN town i did fool around...i mean its pre....you HAVE to lol.
Feathermoore Rep
I can believe it. The money you get is shitty. Thats why all the casual players complain about being broke. You have to do a little farming in order to gain money, or get a lucky drop. Like i always had around or under 100k until EotN came out. Then when elemental swords we're still worth a bunch. The first night it came out I powered through EotN, and got a req9 max Ele sword from a random raptor. Sold that baby for 100k+ and then everyone figured out the raptors were uber easy to farm, so i farmed the crap out of that. And got more ele swords and festival drops, and worked my way up to half a mil easy.
But recently a friend want to do DoA, and we need a paragon so i dual accounted and grinded out the whole campaign in two days. I paid for everything except for survivor runes and materials for the max armor at consulate with the money i picked up. Ex. salvage kits, id kits, the 5k for the armor. At the end i had just over 16k. No side quests, just straight story all the way through. Soo add in 5k for the armor, a plat or two for skills and sig caps, and i barely made 25k. I haven't turned in the book, cuz i didn't do the three extra missions, which is worth an extra and 3k in the book. So total the extra 6k from the book, and you have a grand total of about 30k, after armor if you have the mats.
In short: Yup, the NM mode rewards blow hard.

22K sounds about right. Back in the early days, I remember finally getting to level 20 and had bugger all money. I had to borrow gold off guild mates to afford a Gladiator set of armour.
I returned to the game this time last year and I had 8K on my main char. I then noticed that there was a 2nd year bday present in the pack of one of my alts. Opened it up and out popped a Green Gwen Mini Sold that puppy for 100K+20e and that allowed me to buy myself some elite armour and good greens for my heroes.
But yeah, the prophecies campaign does indeed net poor results purely gold-wise.

That sounds terribly low. And i think there was similar experiment (new char, no storage, just play game, no farming) few years ago where researcher got enough to buy 15k armor set when he finished storyline.
Supervixen
Hmm, did he list down anything that would've contributed to his gold haul though? I mean, a few years back, you could sell a crappy 10/10 string for 75k, so yeah...

In NF in Vabbi I have already more than 40k....
Daesu
Sounds like you went through what my first few characters went through. I was poor most of the time. 15k armor and having 100k seem impossible without farming. Also I actually ran out of skill points to buy skills.
Those were simpler times. I had lots of collector's weapons, no mini pets, no books, rare items can have worse mods than purple, no heroes, no material storage.

This. Though I tend not to bother until further in the game, around the time when enemies are lvl 20 or higher. Hell, I pry out crappy purple runes and ID to sell too. Then sell the armour the rune came in for a 1-2 win.

Prophecies could get a quest reward overhaul:
- Replace the reward items with reward tokens, and move the items to collectors in main towns, and, of course, add the three typical collectors that ask for 1, 3 and 5 tokens. You want the -50 Grim Cesta? You collect 7 tokens and go talk to the collector. You want a ID kit, bags, scrolls or gold instead? You exchange them too.
- If you already have the skill given by a skill quest, you get a skill tome instead.
It is normal to get less gold, since you save tons by getting free skills and professions for free. But it is a bit unfair for foreign characters not receiving anything if their primary and secondary are foreign.
Factions added the best way for rewards. And they used it again in Nightfall. I don't see why not add a working system for Prophecies too.
Eye of the North uses the Prophecies system again, but you can't deny the gold, exp and skill rewards are definitely better.

Yeah, the way it is, foreign characters really have no use to even do most of the proph quests, unless you are just very bored and want to pass the time. They should have at least added small amounts of gold or trade items to the quest rewards...then there would at least be SOME incentive to do them. However, take a proph character to factions and you immediately notice the better quest rewards...thousands of exp, some gold, skill points, and trade items.

Some prophecies skill quests are also available to foreign characters, especially those after Lion's Arch. If you are not a core primary profession, then just make sure that your secondary is a core profession.

22k? I'm not too surprised.
I've probably accumulated a total of about...oh, 200k-ish. And the majority of that was from zkeys (yeah yeah I know) and a few lucky dye drops. Three characters, one of which has played through Prophecies and is halfway through Nightfall, the other two are halfway through Prophecies and a little bit into Factions and Nightfall. Money I've actually made from playing is probably around ~50k-ish. Not a whole lot.
Needless to say, I don't yet have any elite armor sets at all.
Prophecies gives terrible drops, even in areas towards the end of the game, and quests don't give you crap (I'd rather have money than skills I've already unlocked). At least in Nightfall I'm starting to get good drops, and I get some cash from quest rewards.

I'm surprised. I would think you would get even less than 22K. You're lucky because vigor runes don't cost what they used to cost. You would have spent 40K on a sup vigor or less on a major but runes were costly. All my chars were always broke until Sorrows came in (I went from broke to very poor).
Max trade limit, max storage, and max money you can carry severily limit the economy. NPC traders are slow reacting to suply and demand, etc., etc... Too many things I'd like to see changed in GW2.

At the time for me, there were no such thing as zkeys. There were no such thing as ZaiShen for that matter.
If you trade then this finding is corrupted, especially if you trade with people who power through other chapters. Superior vigor runes and superior absorption runes were extremely expensive. I could never afford one, which was why the very first farm I ever did was ettin farming.

Twenty two platinum for doing all missions and all quests in Prophecies, and not spending anything on armor or weapons or runes or skills?
Sounds awfully low to me. Consider that the -50 grim cesta alone sells for 4-5 platinum very easily. So you're saying that the entire rest of the chapter didn't give you more than eighteen platinum?

This is already my second post on this thread and i just want to say that finishing this campaign, Prophecy, won't make you rich.
There used to be a common QQ from players about gold, and the common response from players was to pick up everything that drops - everything, including 3g worth of item.
And for 4 years, that's what i've been doing.
I have not played any HM (in all campaigns), never played in elite areas, im not a farmer, i am only an average joe playing 4 hours a day for the past 4years. What i have now is 520k gold (used to be 620k but i purchased recently one item for 100k).
I've mentioned that i started a new character 4 days ago (but i checked yesterday, it say that it is already 10 days old...probably i spent many days in pre-searing). My gold is 11k (6k came from the sale of -50 cesta) and the rest are from loots. The loots starting from Drokan's Forge sells for an average of 90g and there are times i could no longer pickup other items because i am already full and will earn more than 1k for the loot.
So, i guess, your experiment is correct because missions and quests reward will not give you enough gold. But the drops are so plenty that can make you rich before finishing Prophecy.
BTW, i gold few gold drops that sell for around 200g...i think i got 3 or 4.
Every player in prophecy will be poor if they choose not to pick those "cheap" loot.
