After seeing what happened to Duke Nukem Forever Development Team; I think it sends a pretty dismal picture to anyone who just thinks they want to ride on their past fame in the industry. I highly doubt that A-net would ever make the same mistake. I say give them the extra 2-3 years to get the thing done properly, and after that then they can face the angry mob for the little information they have given out already.

To be quite honest it’s A-net’s bad habit of not saying anything until the last minute I am counting on here. Eventually it will be come clear what is going on with GW 2 development. If they really did not care about Guild Wars 2 then you would have never seen the last update; appealing to some new micro-transactions options to help the development team with their funding.

Anet really should release SOME info, ANY info...

What we'll get through the Hall of Monuments
Shots of the new races
A World map shot
A shot of world PvP
System Spec requirements

ANYTHING, the fact we know NOTHING about it is driving us up the wall.

Maybe GW2 is Duke Nukem Forever... Never give up hope. I don't think I have ever read an article involving games that didn't make it or weren't going to happen that didn't mention Duke. It will take a lot of serious promotion and hype and then a quick backflip and Houdini for GW2 to take that crown.

I'd like to see more information even if it is lore or story based and not directly game-play based. A book that's being released in 2010(wasn't that GW2's original release year) isn't really enough.

Well the reason a lot of people are angry maybe has something to do with them announcing how it would come out in 2008, and just look at the timeframe now. I don't know how many people can even take a couple more months with Guild Wars, I mean maxing titles, and PvP. Meh, its going to be hard to wait that long eventually.

Moreover disturbing to me, is the fact we don't really know anything besides new races and what they say it will be like, other then that its complete imagination. To me I think it could be a financial problem, which is the last thing anyone wants. But lets face it, Guild Wars is a huge cashsink for NCsoft.

I just hope in the end it will pay off finally.

Product Review could just as well mean 'oh shit guys, having reviewed the way the game is currently progressing I vote we cut our losses and cease the Guild Wars Franchise forthwith.'

No one from ANet ever said or even hinted that the game would be out in 2008. They estimated that the beta event would be at the end of 2008 but later changed that to "sometime closer to release."

Besides, lets remember that they were forced to announce GW2 much too early. If they could have it any other way, we'd have only heard about the existence of GW2 this year. Technically, they are still within a reasonable time frame for making a brand new MMO.

Refresh my memory, how were they forced to announce GW2 too early? Don't seem to remember.

Also, an interesting thought is how populated would GW be if GW2 had never been announced? Would it be more populated because people would be looking for more ways to keep it interesting? Or would it be even less populated because people see no point in continuing to play?

They were essentially forced into telling us about GW2 before they released GWEN because they were stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Option one: they don't say anything and work on GW2 in secret, not releasing campaign 4-6 or releasing only one campaign, taking twice as long on GW2 because they need to do stuff for GW1, and getting every single fan extremely pissed off for not keeping up with their promised schedule while not telling us why.

Option two: What they ended up doing. Tell us about GW2 and then put all resources into developing it as quickly as possible with a few new things for GW1 to keep us at least a little happy. Still pisses people off for not giving us frequent updates on GW2 progress and for not giving us enough new content for GW1.

I feel that they did the right thing in choosing option two. I also think that GW1 would be less populated if they had not announced GW2 and given us the HoM. Without GW2, people really would have absolutely no reason to play beyond the personal satisfaction of completing a goal and guildies/friends. Because we know that GW2 is coming and that we will be rewarded for our efforts, people have more of a reason to pursue their goals. Personally, I would have quit GW a long ago if it hadn't been for the promise of GW2 and my guildies.

If they keep on their current strategy of grind is great, I'd say you'll probably be right about that. I really wish I knew why they seem to want to move away from what really set them apart in this genre.

Why so optimistic?

I bet they are waiting for Diablo 2 to hit full 10 years. Then in July 2010 they will release Diablo 3.

But theres nothing to give yet

if its still at internal review, then there is still chance that if it sucks it could be restarted or even scrapped completely

Well, imo they don't care about GW2 cuz of Aion. We still have some time for 2010 - but HEY! We dont have any screens or trailers. Still +2 years.

Not quite true, especially as ANet have nothing to do with Aion, thats being done by another Dev team under NC Softs skirt...

Why are people talking about Diablo 3?

This is not a zero sum game. People who buy Diablo 3 are not necessarily NOT going to buy Guild Wars 2, and vice versa.

Plus, I doubt Blizzard will launch Diablo 3 while still working on StarCraft 2 "expansions".

I DO think it's logical that NCSoft would hold GW2 until after Aion has had a chance in the US.

Bottom line: I don't care how long it takes. I'm still having fun playing GW, and I suspect I'll continue to play original GW even after Guild Wars 2 (just like I still make pre-searing characters even after I have all the chapters).

Take your time Anet. StarCraft 2 took over 10 years to come, and it didn't get hurt at all. If anything, the time just builds excitement.

If I were ArenaNet, I'd be pretty mad if this were the case.

I don't think it is.

Also the fact that they are showcasing the game to the higher ups means that theres a chance they may decide when to give us info. But theres also that huge chance of, "Eh, not yet". Atleast we know that when we do get info the game is going to be pretty complete.

Yeah. I roll my eyes whenever I see the Diablo 3 "threat" as well. Both games are presumably monthly fee-less and I will be picking up both.

Diablo 3, WoW, and Aion are all in completely different marketing platforms from Guild Wars 2. Comparing them is like saying a salary cap in baseball will drastically affect the television ratings of hockey games.

Correct me if I'm wrong but:
Diablo 3 = Action Adventure RPG
WoW and Aion = Pay to Play MMORPGs
Guild Wars 2 = Pay once to play MMORPG

Therefore people wanting WoW and Guild Wars 2 could viably do so without having to pay extra money monthly (just the one time expense.). I think you can put the rest of the cases together yourselves. So the competition argument is pretty much moot then.

It's more like a Single Player, non-online version of an MMO. An SRPG if you will...

Ok, seriously though, Diablo (and especially Diablo II) had a lot on common with the current MMO offerings... Relatively short, designed for repetition, grind, and loot farming. Hell, it's like playing WoW without the genitally-insecure 14 year olds (assuming you don't go on to battlenet. *shudder*). I still fire it up when I feel the bug biting.

Nah, GW avoided that mold (though has long since reversed course to head at it straight-on) but D2 was VERY much, gameplay wise, like most of the big MMOs.
