Why is Kamadan THE marketplace in Guild Wars?
mazza558
Is it due to size? Convenience? Or is it just that most people have Nightfall?
Either way, most people seem to sell their stuff in Kamadan. The Vabbi capital looks like a better market town in my opinion.

It's capacity is large therefore the chance of someone's eye catching your item in among the spam is high.
It's also easily accessible by low level mule characters.

For two reasons:
1) It's a port town, meaning that if you have access to Nightfall you can access Kamadan. For this reason it would limit a potential trading hub to Lion's Arch, Kaineng or Kamadan.
2) It's the only port town which is the first outpost that a new character reaches, meaning that it is available to everyone. This benefit is increased as people's mules and 2 accounts etc only have to go through a 5 minute mission before they can start trading as opposed to all of pre-searing and a run to LA or the whole beginner island of factions.

1. Boat there immediately from any campaign.
2. Access early for mules/NF campaign

"Kamadan" is an ancient Sudanese word meaning "Great Market".
Stop The Storm
would be cool if people used the kodash, it would eliminate the account buyers/sellers which only really appear in kamadan and gtob.
but then again, youd have to switch stuff from your mules to bank to sell in kama

Coast
i guess because its newest big central place, there fore it was ascalon, droks, la, kaineng
snaek
lol i remember the good ol days of trading in ascalon
to op: why is kamadan used? answer: d) all of the above
but to add to the additional responses: they want additional traffic of those players not specifically looking to buy, but those players who are just "passing through".

Win.

All the above, plus because the game is lacking one of the most basic elements that should have been in it from day one (an auction house!!!!), that virtually every other MMO has, we have to have some place to try and buy and sell stuff so it might as well be there. If it is even worth the effort and time to do so.
Zzes Tyan
i normally use GTOB. Mules dont have to go through ANY missions, and all campaigns have access to it.

people choose wher they wanna trade. . .if half the population decided ascalon id1 was the place to go again .. then the other half will move

Thats funny, I had to get my Nightfall character through the first mission into Kamadan before I could get to GTOB. And you also have to get through Pre-searing in Prophecies.

Create a PvP char and see where you end up. Something that can be done with any campain.

Port city catches people passing through into other parts of the region.
I think SOMEONE wanted Kodash to be the big trade center, given the in-game description of it... "All of Vabbi comes to trade here..."
But it takes too long to get to; turns out that it's centrally located ONLY to Vabbi. I think Sunspear Sanctuary sees more trade.
Now, why has Kamadan surpassed LA as the trade center? After all, Kaineng didn't really replace LA 1. Maybe it has to do with mule access; it's also only one "map jump" away from Domain of Anguish, where some nice high-ends came from. As people moved into the Nightfall game, it was easiest not to jump back to LA...?

Everything said plus, nf has the insc weps and newest stuff without beating to eotn.

Basically kamadan is the spot to trade because it is the easiest large city where a low level char can get to
glacialphoenix
I suspect it also has to do with the convenience of trading in the city - LA and Kaineng both have more convoluted layouts, whereas in Kamadan it's easy to just converge around the Xunlai Storage and trade.
Not to mention you can catch a lot of people who might be buying tomes, weapons, dye, mats etc. for new characters that they might be ferrying to the Consulate Docks for max armour, which LA doesn't have.

You don't have all the merchants/traders you want in GToB.
If that wasn't the case it would be more ideal than Kamadan since everyone can reach it, even those with only 1 campaign.

Kamadan, Jewel of Istan. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious.
MithranArkanere
Because the Marketplace in the Battle isles is as closed as the Ahmtur Arena, so they go to the next best spot: A port only two quests and one mission away from the start.
Ate of DK
Yes, lowlevel mules is the main reason.
With a shrinking playerbase people concentrate more and more on that easy place to trade. I remember that Droknar's Forge was once a trading center. Many people around back then.

I'd also like to add that I find Kamadan nicer looking than older trading centers.

They're not going to implement an auction house in GW. Period.

i would agree with you with the caveat that i hope they are finishing it in gw2. i think they started it in gw1 and discovered a few problems with it... perhaps even problems that are irrepairable in this game engine ( tho that doesnt make sense as to why its in the dat file in the first place)... and then postponed it to implement in gw2...
why work on the auction house for a long time when it wont be enjoyed that long as gw2 comes out. so like... 2011 or so

GTOB is getting more attention lately thou: lots of traffic as people go there to get zquests and claim rewards.

Reason ascalon id1 was used is that's where everyone collected their ebay money
Sjeng
I liked LA better. it's so tropical island looking with the beach and palmtrees. Kamadan also has palmtrees, but it doesn't have that holiday feeling :P
But Kamadan suits me fine. it's easily accessible.

I remember the days when Lion's Arch was the trading district of choice. Ahhh... good ol' days.
Of course, you CAN still trade stuff around in Lion's Arch nowadays. It's just that Kamadan, American Districts are much more heavily populated.

Its a port city, also its one of the first cities in NIghtfall. Nightfall being the last campaign made. Eye of the north is expansion and awkward to get to sometimes.
disarm76
Before factions it was LA. After factions it was Kaineng. After Nightfall it is Kamadan.
EOTN is not an expansion, so..
But I remember the devs saying they built eye of the north [outpost] with the purpose of being the next trade place.

Gigashadow
The EoTN outpost is pretty drab, though, it's just a giant room, I'm glad that never caught on. All of the other places are much easier on the eyes.
pumpkin pie
Because Kamadan is the easiest place to get to for both high and low level characters. This is probably why GToB is used as a trading place as well.
Think:
how can your character get to Lion's Arch, Shing Jea Monastary and the rest of the place where you think should have been a marketplace.
