What's with guilds spazzing about swearing?
Lishy
So recently I had tooken upon a guild jumping hobby of finding bad guilds that advirtise that they are good, but once you join, they have crappy members or rules. Today's story?
I had found what seemed to be a decent PvE guild. Got along GREAT with the members and a lot of the vent people. And then this happened after I had FINALLY gotten my tormented shield...

Ever watch "To catch a predator"?
I'm Kain FZ from GWG's "To catch a bad guild" and we're doing a report on bad guilds that try to recruit people for "members"
All jokes and references aside, my research and acting has brought me to one of the BIGGEST questions of all:
Why the hell do people spazz so much about swearing? Excuse me while I enter rant mode:
I mean, all the excuses are really dumb and retarded. I mean, if someone has children, shouldn't you enable the filter AND teach them right from wrong? This is the oldest excuse in the book. The result of not doing shit is the result is being a BAD PARENT. Be it a huge pussy who shields their child from life, or someone who doesn't teach or discipline them. It's just bad parenting. And if you're so against it, why play a game that has swearing in official dialogue?
And to those that just plain hate swearing, why the hell play Guild Wars? Of all games, an MMO that warns about swearing on its label!
AND it has a T rating, in which, you should KNOW words like "bitch" are thrown around. Haven't you ever played Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete? Even one of the most touching love stories in video games uses swearing. And did you know even E rated games have swearing? At the start of Grandia, in one of the FIRST dialogue pieces of the game, you read the word "Bastards" CLEARLY!
If you're just plain a pussy despite it being accepted by society, GW has a CENSORE option be DEFAULT!
There ya' go. All hell won't break loose with the censore filter.
But furthermore, if someone hates swearing soooo much, why are they even alive?
I go outside, I see people calling each other "niggaz" as a common slang, and I hear a variety of other swear words when friends are just casually having fun each other. It's real life and part of our modern-day society. There's no fricken reason to dramatize or complain.
Discuss, yes. But we're talking a whole other level.
/endrant
*sigh*
Will there ever be a high-end elite PvE guild out there that does not succumb to such level of retardation?
Seriously. They're everywhere. Even in the GWG recruitment forum.
I've been looking so hard for so long for a good guild that it led to this hobby. It's just sad. Sometimes I wish someone with an actual decent guild would pm me and send me an invite, that is, without this kind of bullshit happening. No, really. Are there ANY guild recruiting that don't have this bullshit? I've delt with this situation WAAAAAAY too many times -___-
Names censored for the sake of saving from embarassment. I'll probably dig up another dumb guild situation another day.
But for now, because it was so recent, I'd like to focus on the aspect that is guilds spazzing over swearing.
Discuss on guilds and swearing.
Me, and my opinion? Personally, I think if a guild is so disappointing, probably the best thing to do is peacefully leave without harrassing them, since it's not for you anyways.
Though I must admit, a member pming you afterwards just to insult you, trying to increase their e-pen0r to make themselves look like some higher, correct being , is just plain hypocrisy and pathic. And that kind of behavior automatically qualifies something as a bad guild!
So much for a "top" guild <_<
But I have a tip for all of you..
Telling someone they smoke weed, when clearly, they don't, is very good for someone's e-pen. Try it sometime, guys. It'll make you look like a much, much, much, MUCH more smarter, intelligent, mature being than someone else, and it increases your guild™ reputation by over 375 precent!

I know what you mean, sometimes people give the human race a bad name, but after dealing with people like that, I just tend to shrug it off and ignore them. If its just that one guy who is freaking out, I wouldn't let it ruin the rest of the guild's members. Who knows, they might be worth sticking around for.
BUT I do think that if an alliance has a no swearing rule, then you should respectfully honor that rule. Not sure if that one did or not, just sayin'.
Edit: Ok everyone, lets not start trolling, alright? *glares*

That's the thing, Neo Nugget.
Some guilds, such as this, have GREAT members. It is the people in power, however, who bring it down though.
Then there's other guilds who have great officers, but dumbass members who label you as a scammer for doing what any other person would do, and bet low stakes for high rewards in a guild minigame :P

I've almost been in the same situation. Someone from our guild said damn & someone from one of the other guilds flipped OUT. After an hour long argument, the guild left. No biggie though, it got replaced by another 1mill+ kurzick guild.
Rules like that are why I avoid big faction/pve guilds. Someone has to flip out about the smallest thing and make it into a big deal.

Meh... This is always a touchy subject with most guilds and I too see the same exact pattern. Here's the rundown for it though, people freak out about censorship in most games because younger children could be playing the game or in this case the same alliance.
Alright fair enough, we should censor ourselves or try to be more careful about our language because we don't want the F word plastered all over chat.
But WAIT?! What is this?! A FILTER BAR?!
*Sighs*
I'm sorry, this is just a stupid matter and this so called argument is based off of sheer stupidity. If a parent buys some thirteen year old kid a game that has ANY kind of multi-player option, they should know better. I was cussed out at the age of 11 when Diablo II first came out when I stole a guy's gold off his corpse. Mom saw it and pulled the game for a few weeks before the whole entire thing dawned on her. Granted... That was almost 9 years ago...
Anywho, long-story short Kain, good read. I couldn't agree any more.

Not really the point when in-guild is more of a act, even if my excitement was true to finally of gotten such a high-prestige item.
And to be brutally honest, I'm just someone who likes to rant about things. GWG is srsbsnss, ain't it? You know that too!
If this exact same situation didn't happen so many times with so many guilds though, there'd be no need to rant. But that doesn't seem to really be the case.

I agree. If anything, you're the one overreacting about this, Kain. Some people just don't want people swearing, regardless of the fact that there is a filter. I don't see why they're making a big deal, but I don't see why you are either. Accept the fact that there are people like this and move on.

This is funny as are all the people continuously complaining about bad language and caps.
The guy got a tormented shield and was happy, used caps and a swear word to describe that happiness.
If you have a problem with bad words then why isnt your filter turned on? He wasnt exactly swearing or being abusive to anyone else so what is wrong with it?
People who get stuck up and arsey over the use of the F word as an expression of ones emotion need to go out in the real world and make more (non christian maybe) friends.
Just about every normal person uses the word at some point when trying to express their emotion. Nothing wrong with that, it is just a word being used in a non abusive way. Calling someone silly is more offensive then saying 'F*** I just got a tormented shield'.

Totally agreed i throw around a few words and the whole alliance shits themselves like i just started a race war or something. Some people overreact waaaaay to much which makes this game less enjoyable everyday, and you can never forget those epic swear wars in JQ/FA...makes you wonder what kind of person tells you off for saying ''bad words''

You're Horrible. The fact that you said **** in alliance chat at first was not that big of a deal. Then you told alliance chat/the officers that their guild rules are wrong and that you don't have to follow them.
You turned it into a bid deal by whining and bating them aggressively . . . once you got what you were after.
You have every right to be in a guild that allows what you described but if you're gonna argue like "that" and not discuss. . . you will be kicked from every guild you join.

Simple Solution: Find out what a particular guild's guidlines / rules are before joining.
The rule (no swearing) that earns the classfication "bad guild" from you may be a reason long-term members of a guild with consider it a "good guild."
But there really isn't any reason for freaking out because someone used profanity. Just deal with it and move on.

Done that for awhile now. However, it's always the same "No excessive swearing"
And yet, look what happens. Too many guilds do that. And it is pretty much false advirtisement, in which, last I checked, is frown upon in society to false advirtise. =/

This tells more about you then any guild out there. Trolling Alliance Chat in All Caps is nothing really to be proud of and whats wrong with people telling you they don't like swearing? As said before you are the one that makes it bigger then it is ...
I suggest looking for a 'matures only' guild that is more relaxed about swearing, instead of acting up in an alliance/ guild that obviously doesn't fit your type of free-time-fun-activity.
Good Luck.

In my opinion, if you get mad about swearing on alliance chat, and haven't turned on the language filter, you can partake in a meal containing a bowl of our finest penises.
Either turn on the filter, or deal with it. Don't get pissy because you 'play the game in front of children'.

Don't see why its so important to some folks to use whatever language they choose anywhere they choose. Grow up.
btw, you are gonna have problems in a guild if you think you can make up rules that suit you as you go along.
Create your own guild. Do whatever you want cause now you make the rules.

LOL This is the "most awesomest" post ever. And I don't care if thats not a word. I totally agree with OP. And the fact that whoever kicked you then PM's you in that manner with those words says a lot dosent it hahaha. And I get really pissed off when someone says they have a kid playing the game. Sometimes they will say the child is young, like about 5-7 years old. Wouldn't hurt for them to turn off the chat channels off would it? Or even a put filter on... Well hopefully the people in the alliance continued to rage and then disbanded because of all their over-drama and they are now guildless on their own fault.
Btw, You might wanna hope real good that those "parents with kids" didn't take screens and report you...
I also agree completely with Fenix's posts.

It was not the same officer who pmed me after wards that kicked me. That is, unless they share the same name and I wasn't paying attention.
As for the guild's success, personally, I think it's going to go on for a loooooong time.
And to be honest, I know some great people in it as well. What I hope for, is if the guild can improve for the sake of those people though.
Guild leaders, for example, needn't jump to paranoid assumptions of guild hopping just to learn the stygian farm, for example, and should be more clear on guild rules from the start when someone asks about them.
Giving hints on rules simply doesn't cut it.

I guess this is just a bunch of bad parents who get sensitive *tear* around swear words. You got a tormy shield, you're happy/excited so you earned the right to say ''F*** yeah!''.
If the people in that guild/alliance can't understand that then it's better they go back to their real lives and nag their 12 year old son.

Whenever I join a guild I never know what their rules are. If I feel like typing in a humorous adult joke, or participating in a fun conversation with any kind of mature humor that doesnt involve chickens crossing roads, then I want to do that. My current guild / alliance is very fun and relaxed, people can say whatever they like and I have not seen anyone get insulted in anyway at all yet because nothing is on a personal level. It is like swearing in Age of Conan is allowed so long as it is not abusive, since it is a mature game, but that game is dead now and has a fee. But as I said at first, when you join a new guild you do not know what their rules are.
There is a clear difference between swearing for either expression of emotion or for a joke, or just to be abusive and nasty to others, yet you can still be the latter without using a single swear word at all.
The term I am describing is called 'context'.
As for the excuse about children, why are your children watching and reading what you type, or why are they playing an online game if you dont want them to hear swear words? If I ever have kids, I already know not to let them have internet access untill they are 16 years old. I wont be having my kids addicted to WoW or Maple Story at age 8 like other irresponsible parents allow. And then, the parents are also paying for their kids subscriptions or in game cash usage, like, where do all these failure parents come from these days? Would you buy crack cocaine and put it in obtainable reach of your kids? I know I wouldnt, and yes, the Internet can become the same thing as crack.
Learn to take responsibility of your kids before using them as an example for no swearing in an online game.
Also dont forget that kids go to school. When I were 10-12 years old, not knowing what the F word meant or what porn or masturbation were would mean that you wouldnt be very successful at making friends. It is not an ideal situation at all, but it is the real world and if you want your kids to be responsible and get on well in life, you need to teach them to grow a backbone. If you think your kids are going to remain innocent little fairies and virgins untill they marry, you are living in loony ga - ga land and have probably been very over sheltered yourself all your life.
Real life says hi, wake up please.

I mean that it may be more constructive with a better result if you create your own guild with like minded people. Especially because you wrote in your OP that this has been going on for so long and that you have enough of it.
No need to infiltrate and other silly things like that. And when you'll get another prize like the shield, the guild members will respond with: 'RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOING NICE DUDE!' etc.
Looking at this thread alone, I think there are enough candidates out there which I don't see as a good or a bad thing. I'm an adult who often swears too.
A last thing that comes into this, is a guild's house rules. They always have the last word. In your own guild, you make the house rules.

If the alliance has rules for no swearing and no caps then those are the rules. They aren't going to change for you, so it's you who is going to have to deal with it or leave.
They don't even need a reason to not want swearing; if they feel like it, they can have a rule that says "No mesmers allowed" and there would be nothing wrong with it; It's not like you have some sort of god-given right to have a mesmer in that guild, or to even be in that guild to begin with. Their guild, their rules.
You want your guild to be different? Then get a different guild.

When you join a guild or alliance with certain rules on chat there is nothing wrong with at least trying to keep them in mind.
Remember, you are not the leader of the guild or the alliance else those rules would not be there. Basically you are a guest and should act like one.
And if the rules are that you don't swear please don't.
It can happen and leadership should place things in context. There is a huge difference between saying 'effing Shiro' and 'effing noob Kain' in AC. I've had some chats on that with various leaders in alliances over the time.
Past experiences tell me that a completely free chat isn't working and a chat that's too restrictive isn't working either. And keeping balance between the two isn't easy.
Before you start about 'spazzing guilds' again, why don't you run your own 30+ member guild for a while in a full alliance. And experience what stuff you have to deal with.
I know what I'm talking about but I get the impression that you don't have the slightest idea....

Sometimes guild just want their people to have, ... hmm ... class.
The fact that swear'n'caps happy member gets em pissed off does not mean they are pussies that can't handle swearing. Its just means they do not want whiny, shouty, sweary kids around.

I agree that people who have their chat filter off but complain about swearing are usually morons, and that swearing is pretty mainstream, but I would have kicked your ass out too. Rules are rules, regardless of whether you think they should be or not. Is it really that difficult to respect a simple request to refrain from using swear words? Besides, if you really liked this guild as much as you seem to, I would assume it would be rather easy to respect such a request. I don't think you were kicked because you swore, I think it was because you made such a big deal over being asked/told not to.
I agree that people should be less sensitive about swearing, but you should also have been more respectful of their rules.
