Wealth and the age of the game...
Jetdoc
Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same phenomenon as me.
In the early years of Guild Wars, I generally found myself as a hoarder of wealth - actively trading to build my stash of items, etc.
Now, in the waning years of Guild Wars, I'm simply spending money like water, to the point where I really don't care whether I'm overpaying for something or not.
Is that natural for a game that is nearing the end of its lifecycle? Is this similar to the phenomenon that you see in real life as people realize that "they can't take it with them"?

I would love to spend money like water, however, I'm lucky if I have 40k at any one time...

For me personally, I just felt like there was any point.
I mean I already have all the skins I want, why should I be holding onto all this extra cash?

Well, I still need like 200-300k for each AFK-fest that are the 9 Rings.
Other than that - I am the kind of guy that will buy stuff off the merch just so that I don't need to bother with finding a player selling it.

I guess I have been hording, but I did finally break and buy a gold polymock to finsh that stupid part of the game.
glacialphoenix
I think it's partly because you can't take the gold with you? I only hoarded money to get the stuff I wanted, like armour, weapons, skills, titles... I mean, the whole point of getting in game gold is to use it to buy in-game things you want. Since the HoM, getting things like armour or sweet/party/drunk points is far more worthwhile than keeping gold. So, you know... no matter how small the carry-over reward turns out to be, at least you see something from them in GW2. The 100k you save in cold hard cash won't make any appearance.

I yesterday buyed 3black dyes to try skins on my armor for fun, because i was bored so 9k, then i sold them back to dye trader for 7k.
Squishy ftw
I prefer overpaying rather than wasting more time.

I spend whatever I feel like if it is something I want (canthan skinned gear usually)
but it is natural when you get to the point that you have done most things, it isn't hard to make money and no reason to keep it so may as well spend it.
Unfortunately you usually spend more when you stood about bored  I spent about 200k the other day looking for a new armor combo, pictures don't do armor justice and you need to dye it to see how it balances
I am still trying to get the whitest ele armor I can but the tops just do not seem to dye white enough

I quit hoarding. Now I just blow it all on lockpicks and z-keys.

I for one am working on amassing as much as I can for the hall of monuments. So yeah, all the stuff I collected for value is being put in the HoM.

I generally wait for a price I like to buy something. Someone was selling a mini lich the other day, he wanted 40k. I skipped it and the next day got one for 20k. Someone was selling mini koss for 50k, skipped it and two days later it was 10k. People were selling Perfect salvage kits for 5k each. I waited and got mine for 2k each.
I do my best not to overpay or undersell. I have no shortage of patience. It doesn't hurt that I only buy/sell while I'm afk playing another game.
I will get a mini bone dragon for 20k and a mini Kunna for 50k. Both unded. Watch, it will happen.

I used to work really hard farming to amass gold. Any money I earn now is basically being funneled into HoM one way or another.

I just spent over 100k for Elite Luxon armor last night on a whim.
You can't take it with you... (well, I put the armor in HoM, of course).

I'm also finding myself in the same situation. Within the last 2 1/2 weeks I bought 4 sets of elite armor for HoM. Bought my favorite sword skin r9 emerald and a couple shield skins I like, didn't argue any prices at all.
Pretty much down to nothing now, hopefully I saved enough to finish up my party title. Other then a few more titles there isn't much left for me.

I horaded for awhile then I stopped caring.
I would spend atleast 200k per day.
Until Monday when i officially quit GWs.
I gave EVERYTHING of mine away for someone else to hoard.

I was upto 600k-750k acroos my accounts, now I'm down to around 50k give or take 20k, I don't care about money any more as I can make 40k or more a night doing dungeon runs, I made a small fortune doing keg runs till they got boring (40 gold unids per 2 hours). Now I just get run thru dungeons myself by others, though I either smite or perma to get a discount. EotN made getting money too easy, I got two e-blades and 3 bds for endchests that I sold to maintain anything I want to do without working for it. Only part of the game I actually play anymore is the Nicholas farm to get whatever he needs for his gifts, and now I'm sitting on quite a stack of party/alcohol points.

I unlike many do continue to hord. Im just saving up for a panda. soon it wont matter what title you have how rich you are or if your super good at pvp. everyone has the same level playing field in gw2

I was in the same boat, had set myself a goal of getting to 1m gold, got to about 750k and thought "wtf am I doing??", so one set of armour (combo of 15k and FoW) later on my main, I'm now sitting around 500k and happily keeping my wife in mini's when I see a good deal.
And I have a Kunni sitting in Pre, so if I ever need money..........

Never been a big hoarder, always hanging on a few money to pay for consets, entrances and daily consumables and sometimes maybe a bit of money to craft new armors.
Most of the time I'm below 100k but happy like that.

Hmm. I remember I had a hard time getting 4k for an armor for my Necromancer.
Now, after getting several 15k armors without farming much or doing XTH. Why? No idea, probably about 8 characters that can farm something, and I farm when I need something and I don't waste money.
So no, I don't spend more than I need. I might overpay, because I'm lazy, but I won't pay twice too much.

There are two resources in this game: stuff and time.
The OP's post indicates that time has become more valuable than stuff. That's increasingly likely to happen as time passes. We get older, get more responsibilities, etc.

I overpay and I undersell. I really cannot be arsed trading properly, never have been arsed either tbh.

I am hoarding until I get the last 7 items I need to finish my collections: R8+5 energy shinobi, sunqua, and duskblade, and celestial staffs r9 20/20 divine/prot and divine/divine, and finally get my unded island guardian back. Once I have those 7 items my sword collection, my celestial staff collection, and my pet collection is done and I give everything else away and quit.

lol, i once recall filling storage and 4 chars full of money, and then thinking "Whats the point" and then blowing it on armor, skins i wanted, and then still being left with 400kish so i blew the rest of it on 9rings and zchest. Now im lucky to get over 300k ¬_¬ But i don't care really. Whats the point in money if you have nothing to spend it on. Me i just blow any money i get on the zchest or keep it, if a 9rings fest is comming up.

Why is it that everyone I know in-game has gotten awesome giveaways or deals from other people, be it friends or random players, but I never seem to meet the generous ones?
Anybody wants to be friends in-game, who's about to quit GW? :P

Idk, the game gets boring if there's no Pay for this buy-for-that economy.

I dont really overspend, although i spend money on useless things, i bought 5 different sets of elite armour even though i decided i was only going to use one them.
I am a bit of a hoarder though, i have stacks of materials, dyes, weapons, runes, collectables, and probably more that i have forgotten. All of my characters except 2 have full inventories. All of the stuff is worth enough to be sellable, but im to lazy to actualy bother selling it.

I also have stopped hoarding things. I suddenly realized that I have no need for mods & inscriptions and r9 weapons. I have all the weapons I need on 10 characters. The same with most materials; I have pretty much all the armor I need or want.
So instead of buying more storage for real world money, I am clearing out the storage. Selling what I can for basement prices and giving away the rest. I've dedicated most of my minipets and am currently giving those away. Next will be the r9 weapons I will never use. I have rare skins that I don't even like enough to use.

I spend all my money in my HoM, at least till I get those remaining armour sets and that destroyer weapon.
Then I'll go back to buying the minipets of nicholas, and finally I'll go afk on that 9 rings so i can get those titles in my HOM too.
All for gw2 which I'll probably never play I guess.

I normally try to keep a minimum balance in storage, and then spend spend spend anything that goes over that. However, I am dangerously close to spending it all on shiny things for my warriors
Misa
i spent more than 1 million in the past month...

i used all of my money to buy fireworks be4 the party title came out, then sold all of them the same day the partytitle was availabe, sold around 11.000 points of firework to, i think it was, 210g per point. after that i never bored to look what anything was worth, if i wanted it i just brught it, sometimes even if it was duble or trible the normal price.
example the fire djinn polymock 50k. just to get the summoning skill fast.

I only overpay for items I think would take too long to buy (runes, insignias, dyes), or which I want fast (new minis/skins). Otherwise, I usually have the time. Like others, though, I find myself spending more and more money on completely useless things. My warrior for example, has all the tormented weapons, dedicated at his hall. Some of them are on heroes, about 3 or 4 are just sitting in storage, doing nothing. He also has all the elite armors, whilst only using maybe two tops. The rest are just sitting on a mule account, gathering dust.
Nessar
I used to hoard money for armor, skills, etc etc. Now, I just spend money on 15k armors since I don't need to spend it on anything else. I rarely overpay for things since I don't need weapon skins anymore.

I started playing day Prophecies went live. Believe it or not, the biggest attraction of GW at the time was that the explorable and mission loot was much much better than in World of WarCraft! Times do change, don't they?
So, I have wealth accrued from long ago. More wealth accrued from farming. Nothing much to spend it on that I don't already have.
I recently did a nostalgia return to WoW, started a hunter off from zilch, got up to level 67. The hunter currently has around 8,000 g that he earned himself, no big trick to it; gather herbs and ore, few lucky drops. Watch what's in demand in the Auction House, go get some of that. Yet, the guild chat was full of players up around his level or higher complaining that they were once more nearly broke.
It's possible to get wealthy at this stage of GW, obviously, but it takes a lot more farming to do it. I wish it could be like it was when GW first came out, just blast around the Crystal Desert and stuff plat on mules!
