Before factions was the best, before the skill nerfs.... when vimway was pro and the lulz, minion factorys were pro... when the game was generally better

When finishing FoW and UW was unspeakable...

I just went back to Sorrow's Furnace for the first time in a long time. Finishing up the Black Moa Chick hunt.

I remember going here for the first time and how hard this place was. The Forge Man was a thing to be feared and took a well organized group to bring down.

This time I just put together my usual H/H and walked through the whole thing. Got the BMC and finished the quest just for old times sake.

Man how times change.

Not having found the wiki or any fansite it seemed if you would explore the wildernis for hours before you finally found an outpost.
It was like finding water in the desert or so it seemed for me.

This.
I keep wondering when was the first time a group finished uw/fow for the first time?

Pre-factions era was the best for me. I really enjoyed pugging back then, didn't feel like I was playing the game alone...

I also liked fow chestruns alot.

I only hope that gw2 will live up to my memories of gw.

I miss the old log-in screen, way back when prophecies was out.

I also prefer the old character creation process screen. Hard to explain, so here is a picture.

I remember buying the Tattoo armor for my Monk because it gave extra energy that couldn't be found elsewhere.

My ultimate memory would be being defeated by the Doppelganger only for my pet to kill it for me after I died. I was so happy I got a screenie.

Some of my favorite things / moments about early GW:

1) Unlimited minions.
2) Thinking that pre-Searing was the whole game, then mind = blown when I arrived in post-Searing.
3) When Razorstone's Axe dropped for my warrior on my FIRST run in Sorrow's Furnace when it was first available. I felt like Jesus. Also got Brohn's Staff, which I sold for 100k, and I was like, "Wow, this is all the money I'll ever need!"
4) Gaining experience so that I could not level, but adjust my attribute points.
5) Arriving at Yak's Bend for the first time!

I remember finally finishing Hell's Precipice and not realizing that I had just beat the game. I clearly remember thinking "That's it? Now what the hell do I do?"

Then I learned of the Titan Quests. Does anyone here remember how epically difficult they were to do? One of the biggest problems was finding other people like you who needed/wanted to do them too, finding a PUG was a nightmare because you had to leave from an outpost that was waaaaay lower on the character level scale than you. The game was still so new that most people in the outpost didn't even know a Titan Quest exsisted LOL. The hardest one to complete was the one near Old Ascalon. Finding the perfect 4 man setup was very hard to do. In all my years of GW I have never went back and re-did those missions.....ever. Once was enough.

I miss the days of energy denial mesmers... back when you could Energy Drain and force the other guy to lose 20+ energy, Energy Tap to cause a loss of 12 energy, and 12 energy off Energy Burn... yeah, that's right, 44 energy in the course of a few seconds. My old guild had a nice little spike build in which I'd energy-spike a monk, and everyone else flies in to deal as much damage as they could before there was enough energy to heal.

Infinite minions were also good fun. Maintaining 200+ Bone Minions FTW, indeed.

I do NOT miss the refund points, though. Ugh. "Whoops, hang on guys, I can't GvG yet, I need to go off and farm a bit for more XP so I can use my PvP build." And how about those skill captures? You had to anticipate some of the skills coming out in order to get it before they used another right afterwards, but not too early or else you walk away with another common skill you already had!

The Proph-only days were good ones overall, though. Strategy hadn't really developed beyond Spirit Spam or IWAY in PvP, and mesmers were thought to be generally useless because they couldn't DPS like elementalists. While that made it a huge pain to find PUGs, I liked being my guild's secret weapon.

One of Many [ONE]

Hmm, hard to say - been so long I do not remember a lot however reading some of these posts brings back memories.

One of the biggest was unlimited minions. I remember getting a "run" from somewhere in Ascalon to Lions Arch just before Factions was released. It was a fairly skilled runner - do not get me wrong - but shortly into each area I had enough of a minion army to wipe anything that came close to us. He had done the run for free (said he was bored and had more plat than he knew what to do with - as I said good runner at the time so I believe him) so I didn't feel ripped off or anything. The group decided to stand back and watch the army crawl across once built - it was fun.

Indeed, he made the comment that he may change his running strategy for that area (being free runs no reason not to ask for a few kills at the start). Then a few weeks later - no more unlimited army so *bleh*. I always liked my little tiny female necro with an army at her beck and call - still do when I log in though not nearly the army of old. Of all the changes during the years this is the really the only one I truly miss, though I understand the reasons for doing so.

I would also add in no scatter from AoE damage.

But then - neither one of those were truly early Guild Wars. Back then I do not recall much hardship or greatness. I started VERY shortly after the trader update (a couple of months into release). The biggest of both was refund points on attributes - if you changed builds much you were not happy, however one could change builds out in the wild too. I know when running into a fire resistant boss critter on my fire ele I clearly recall changing (mid battle) to an earth build and then back again afterward. I do somewhat miss that but was more than happy to give it up for what we have now.

Lastly, I recall when Thunderhead keep was considered the main block of the game and truly impossible with hench. I recall the first few screens posted and then someone telling about "camp the king" and most could hench it that were decent players. Several of the Ring of Fire quests took more time but doable hench strategies were out well before Factions let alone heroes. There were a few screens of players with *no* skills, *no* attributes, and *no* weapons using nothing but the hench on every missions of the game at the time.

I remember before consumables and SF sins and heroes ruined the game. Man you HAD to be NICE or you wouldn't get through the game. Now everyone is an azz and plays solo and talks crap about how everybody else plays worse than them and are noobs. You just can't give that kind of power to players Anet you see what you did?

Same, I joined a pretty big Guild/Alliance and I tend to help people when ever I can just to have that old feeling with playing with other people again lol.

My first character was a Warrior, and I remember randomly killing Devourers in various places with a Chaos Axe I payed 5k for which was white and not even max. no, I didn't know this site existed.

After I killed enough one dropped a Vial of Dye Black and my jaw dropped. Unfortunately, I wasted every shitting penny by trying out dye combinations and putting a Rune of Minor Axe Mastery on every piece of armor. It should also be noted I didn't wear a body piece cause I thought it looked cool.

In more experienced times (thank god), I remember the money I used to get from 55ing and such, when there was no loot scaling, and ectos were like 10k a piece. Then loot scaling came in and screwed everything up, Dying Nightmares came in and screwed everything up. NOW you have to break the game with SF if you want that sort of money that quick again. I hope it tells ANet not to mess around with their game, because as far as I'm concerned, everytime they updated the game just got worse until eventually getting to the state it is in today.

-Remembering when the High end mats NPC traders bugged out and Obsidian shards/Ectos were 100g. Runes of Superior Absorbtion, going from 90k+ to 300g was also nice to see that day...unfortunately they did a rollback on the servers

-Watching Ugly Ducklings take halls over and over again when the game first came out.
-Meeting/getting tigered by a guy from Sissy Boys on my very first visit to Beacon's Perch.
-Watching old gvg matches of Last Pride/Treacherous Empire etc.
-Getting my first set of Knight's Armor from Droknar's Forge.
-All the teamwork and time it took to actually get to the end of the game, Hell's Precipice.
-Beating missions with 60DP!
-Stealing Glints eggs...and then dancing naked with them.
-Reaching Kryta for the very first time...
