Things you wish you knew before you started Guild Wars...

that Anet would abandon their original statements that this wasn't a game spent about time spent playing and that they would continually introduce more and more focus on grind into the game.

That Ettin farming brought in a ton of money. It's a shame I only found out about it after Sup Abs and Sup Vig came down from 100k and 50k respectively. However, to this day I STILL HAVEN'T GOTTEN A SUP VIG DROP! 4 years; I would have expected at least one.

haha so true. I thought what a useless piece op drop is this when I got the dyes in pre.

That taking a break from GW to play WoW would not be worth it ... does that count?
Yawgmoth
Nothing. Everything important to know BEFORE even STARTING to play was already public information. And everything else I was able to learn as everyone did when everything was new.
I could say I wish I knew how many thousands of hours will this game take from my life, but having played just 1 beta event I just knew it was going to be a huge lot.

i wish i would have known that all of my max q8 gold items would someday be worth a fortune.
I merch a 15^50 q8 brute sword that at one point was worth 300k 2 years later.

I got up to great northern wall, then quit because I couldn't find the lever to open the gate (SEE: Lever was right next to gate). Delayed my best gaming experience by close to a year.
I'm reading the back of the box as we speak
"we killed the boredom of spawncamping, your adventure is created just for you and your party"

"We axed the subscription fees"
add-ons ftw
We let you play with your friends or ours

How bout wish I knew how much loot I'd get from Killroy's punchout thingy in hardmode. Seriously reminds me of the days I ran a 55 monk.
EPO Bot
That black dye is expensive.

There isn't much that I wish I knew. I enjoyed my newbie days and it was alot of fun running around in a brand new world exploring and learning new things as I went. Sure, my builds weren't the best but they got the job done and my friends didn't criticize.
My worst mistake was customizing a weapon. My first character was an Assassin/Ranger and she used a bow. Not the best idea in the world, but I thought bows were more fun and kept me away from the action and alive. (No it wasn't crit barrage, but that's what my assassin uses today). A guildie set me straight on builds and gave me a set of gold daggers and taught me how to use them. The daggers were a gift so I customized them. It seemed wrong to sell a gift.
Flashforward 3 years.....that assassin has since been re-rolled, i've changed guilds and the guildie that gave me the daggers no longer plays. However i found those customized daggers buried on a storage mule. Req 8 Oni Daggers, 15% over 50, perfect mods. Never give a newbie anything expensive.
Today I never customize my weapons. Just isn't worth it IMO. In PvE I don't think i need the extra 20% to succeed and i risk losing a weapon i may sell later.

Only reason that sucks is the req 8 and the fact that the 15^50 is probably inherent rather than an inscription. In most cases I just use green weapons, which I have no issue customizing, that and anything req 9+ as they'll never be so "rare" that you can't find them again. It would be nice though if customization was account based rather than character.
reaper with no name
I wish I had known that dervishes were outclassed in everything they can do worth doing, so that I'd have made a warrior instead.
Phaern Majes
Maybe so, but something about running my dervish with 2 dervish heroes, and all of us hitting Chilling Victory at the same time is strangely satisfying.
Buns United
I wish I'd known what Soul Reaping was for, I remember my first character being a N/E with all fire magic spells. Once I got to pugging the jungle-missions, one of the people in the PuG I joined asked me how much points I had in Soul Reaping, I replied; 0, I have no Soul Reaping skills.
Other then that, I wish I'd known about the THK monk strikes, and how fast they'd be over. I deleted that first character there because I couldn't complete the mission.
Oh, and I wish I'd known that by the time I got to playing a monk, that the 55 Protective Bond griffon farm was outdated. Deleted my second character there because somehow 'the build didn't work ' and I misspelled the ingame name.
Fun times.

That the game was actually fun back when I played my first two hours then thought it sucked and quitted...
I came back like 15 months ago, far beyond the low reqs, rare stuff and more than three districts in HA...

I wish I knew what ANet was going to do to PvP, so I could stop playing when me and my guild thought it was going bad, but decided to be optimistic.

Here's one to start off with: You can use runes of vitae AND survivor runes on the same piece of armor. Also +50 HP runes don't stack, and you'll waste alot of money buying a bunch of them to find out the hard way. |
But for me. i wish i knew what was gonna get rare and/or removed from game orso.

I also wish I hadn't gotten caught up in a game that's sequel is going to look ridiculously similar to WoW....especially the PvP (which means the PvP will be bad).

On topic:
I, like many others, wish I knew dye prices before merching them in pre. I sold 3 black dye to the merchant, and then sold a 4th after the Searing in Ascalon for what seemed like an incredible sum (400 gold). Fall 2005, those were the days!

I loved learning the game. Didn't know of any wikis back then, so I was in the dark for everything. Including the first wintersday. I was running around Ascalon seeing presents drop on the ground and had no idea what to do with them. I am sad that I didn't get the first hats though. Knowledge is power!

That I'd know how much time was wasted creating characters and deleting them half-way through PvE because of how they looked/or wanting a different build and profession.
Also wish I hadn't wasted so much time in Competition Arenas, never moving toward the other forms of PvP; although the character templates were just cute.
edit: I ran something like this for months at another's suggestion:
Hex Breaker
Water Attunement
Elemental Attunement
Aura of Restoration
Deep Freeze
Blurred Vision
Ice Spear
Res Sig

That there was going to be so many titles to max in the end. (and some costly both in time and money)
That the game eventually would drive me near insane trying to get a mini (Gwen Doll) out of Nicks pressies. xD
That I'd be more afraid of making a fool out of myself in the beginning than asking ppl around more questions, even silly ones. That way I woulda been less in the dark about things at the start.
In all the time I played up until now, me neither. Until Nicks bone charm week, then I suddenly got two of them. In two days. And the clincher is, it was in the very same spot both times in Rhea's Crater. (Near where Nick was). I got a bit scared. D:

Yes, that was a pretty solid game for its day. A bit grind heavy. But fun.
EDIT: It's always true that the key decision-makers' perceptions of players' skill level determines who gets into teams and who gets left out in the cold. Just human nature, I'm afraid.

That max armor existed.

When I started I had a very minimal computer to be able to play, using wiki slowed me down beneath a crawl. I thought the word armor meant that the only people I saw wearing what looked like armor, ie warriors had armor. (only had prophecies) . I was quite a ways along before someone suggested I replace my starter armor. (I know I was in the Shiverpeaks somewhere). Also after i spent a long time farming for max armor after a Droks run, discovered selling 1 white dye I had would have given me enough gold.
