absolutely stunning, Charlie!
I had pretty big expectations for what it would look like in the end, and still you impressed me by taking it even further. The weapon design is really cool, and you can get lost gazing at the immense level of detail in the piece as a whole. o.o'
Really, really nice work, congrats.

Good lord Charlie, that's incredible! I can't believe that's just pencil, it looks like a photograph.

I hope you enjoy your art book.

Nothing done picture wise. It's been raining most of the week and my daughter caught some nasty cold (or flu) and shared a bit of it with me. After 3 days of fever she is finally doing better and back to running around the house. The next 5 days are supposed to be sunny so I'm hoping I can get pics on Saturday for the earliest, most likely Sunday though. Brainstorming compositions right now and trying to find where my kids hid the tripod.

anyone have any tips for getting rid of a really bad artist's block? >.<''
I just can't seem to find the inspiration to work with the jora costume all of the sudden.
I made some boot-armour today, that was all. Havent touched the costume in 3 days and I really dont have time to fool around >.<'''

@Tzu: Taking walks or being around nature in general are usually nice ways to help recharge yourself. Just find a nice quiet area, listen to some tunes and soak it all in. Someone mentioned that you live in Europe? I'm sure there's some nice areas out there that you'll be able to find.

Starting to get cold down here in California. Nice to take walks at night when the fog is rolling in everyone pours into the restaurants and bars along the mainstreet. The atmosphere itself is kind of creatively inspiring.

@Kiya: That's a bummer, the flu is no fun. Hope you two feel better. Looking forward to seeing your final pictures - also hope the leaves finally turn orange for you!

@Operative & Minami: Thanks guys, glad you like it. And Operative, I'm personally trying to shoot for the new mini :P

The more I stress, the less I want to do things. I don't know if its the same for you Tzu, but if it is then you need to go do something fun that is totally non GW related. Once you are relaxed, think of WHY you want to get this costume done. Do you want to do it to prove that you CAN do it? (Thats often a reason for me.) Also if I start thinking of how there is someone else besides me that wants to see a finished project it encourages me to get off my duff and get some work done.

ZOMG!! all hail Charlie, the pencil god
no, srsly, how awesome is that??!? love what you did to the architecture in the end, it's really nice and dark/mysterious! how big exactly is this if it's too big for a scanner? brilliant work!

I felt really halloween-inspired, coming home for a short break and it was nice and cold and autumnal and leaves falling and everything. Then it started to snow, and now I'm in the world's biggest christmas mood >.<

anyway. thanks for the feedback on my stuff, guys, I'll probably get rid of the wing (never was too sure about that one myself, tbh..) and get some ghosts and cool background stuff in

OGOGO people! I wants to see more progress!!

Tzu: When I'm stuck and have "artist's block", I usually try and forget about it all for a day... watch some movies, drink a cup of chamomile tea (it has a nice relaxing effect on the body) etc, and after a day, take a collective look at your work, all in one, and it will inspire you to work on it and perfect it. What I like about this method is that you don't look at other works to inspire you, but your own.

As for my own work... Here's the new pose; I had to change it because the old one just would not fit with any kind of background I thought up...
I also drew some tattoos onto her hand and feet textures. I was thinking about drawing a tattoo onto her stomach too, but it kept messing up the smooth lines of her muscles that are specially lit up from a half-side angle to make it look like that.

Clicking on the pic will make it bigger. ^_^

Charlie: Thank you ^_^
Nope, my 3D work is all self taught and I'm doing it for fun.

However, a picture of mine got into a book once (an instruction book on how to use a 3D program ^_^), and a couple got onto album covers.

I really love doing 3D, fiddling with surface settings and perfecting poses and lighting... ^_^

@Charlie: Wow, I would never have the patience to do that. The mace is wonderful. That picture ought to be on the side of a cathedral somewhere in GW2, I swear.

@Blue: You solved the contrast thing, looks like. Zhaitan is looking more impressive now. Didn't notice it before, but a good use of those crossed spine things to draw the eye up to him. I think perhaps the bone dragon could use a little more lighting - he still fades a little into the foreground. That may have something to do with my not being able to fit the whole image on my computer screen, though, so it may not be a real problem at all.

@Minami: Ooh. Normally I'm not too into renders but that looks fantastic. Great details.

Well, I got around to playing with my costumes. Went out, screenshotted Pyre and Jora, and got back to work (ended up ignoring the Jora shots). I didn't notice this before, but Charr have spikes on their shoulders! So I fixed that. And since Jenna got shoulder spikes, I thought it would be better to give Ebia something else. So she got furry shoulder straps. I touched up the rest of her outfit a bit, using Olrun as a model (I still want to keep it my own design though). Also, I changed some details on Jenna's hat (pronounced the ears more, brought the eyes out), and gave her sleeves like Pyre's. Threw some rope detail in there, too. How's it look now?

Blue: Your pic looks more balanced now, and I think it's going to look waaaay awesome when you're done! It's such a dynamic picture! I love the electric/lightning effect coming from Zhaitan's mouth.

Okay, finally got around to posting Gui's costume. Looking at it again, I think it's got the requisite cuteness, but it's a lot more Alice than Loli, and the detail doesn't stand up to that on the other two costumes. I'm definitely ditching the flower earrings for something more like the Shing Jea ones. Not sure what else I can do for it, besides perhaps trash the Mary Janes or make them heels. Admittedly, the scars on her face will add a little to it, but still, IT NEEDS HELP.

Oh, and the little color dabs on the side are just a couple tests. I definitely want the main fabric of the dress to be something close to the middle purple. The lightest lavender is her hair color.

Ignore the crappiness of the picture; I did it in one class period last year.

EDIT: I'm thinking of deriving more from the Shing Jea armor, but I need to keep the overall look intact. I may add fingerless gloves or something and perhaps boots.

Looking good. Where'd you find that concept art? (v. curious as to the original idea, as it looks pretty neat)

Boy, Nolani's dead today, eh?

I kind of freaked out today when I realized I need to have this done basically by Wednesday... and I don't have any time tomorrow... I have essentially Monday and Tuesday to draw the whole dang thing.

I reworked Gui's costume, and I think I upped both the Loliness and the GW-realism. Sorry for the cruddy quality; I had to scan it. I got most of the inspiration from Necro Ascalon, SJ, Canthan, Kurz, and Deldrimor, plus Ele Kurz and Mez 15k Kurz. The colors from the old version still apply. There is lace trim on the sleeves and the bodice. I was planning on fastening the bodice with ties but I was looking at the Ele Kurz and was inspired to do frog clasps instead, but now it looks a little too much like that armor... would laces be better? Still, my only big worries are that a) the boots look kind of boring and b) the base part of the skirt is blah. Other than that I'm quite happy with it.

In addition to Ebia asking "So why did she decide to be a necromancer?" I think I want a caption. I've been toying with:
-King Thorn's madness appears to be contagious.
-Halloween makes even Necromancers silly.
-Halloween: Bringing out the sweet tooth in everyone since 1072 AE.
I kind of like the last one. What do you folks think?

@Morag: Again, really liking the vector art. That crystal effect is pretty neat too. Nice choice of dark to light colors for some contrast.

@Qing: Big improvement on the stance and outfit in the second sketch. Definitely looks and feels more like a costume. I think the current laces on the blouse work well with it. As for the bottom of the skirt, maybe some type of frill or lace design? Don't want to make it overly intricate - it's looking like it has a nice balance between elegance and simplicity.

Nice progress guys, your pieces are coming along nicely!

Woops. Totally should have looked for a ref of zhaitan before drawing him. Realized after rendering him that I made some kind of weird mecha dragon that looks nothing like him. LOL.

OH WELLZ.

Yeah, haven't worked on the bottom half yet. But lols.

@ Qing - I like this version much more than the first one, looking really neat! I like the boots as they are, not everything has to be overcomplicated with details. Perhaps some fishnet-type lace would help the skirt in places, but I'm not sure

@ Charlie - thanks! I wanted to try this approach to ... painting?? well it's not drawing either, but I think it looks cool xD

@ Blue - looking awesome, me likes mecha dragonz colours are coming on really nicely, love the contrast between the blue and red, and the moon is awesome xD

well, I got some more progress:

http://i33.tinypic.com/2zrqoso.jpg

totally unsure what to do with the bottom bit underneath the body... I feel it should be darker but then I don't want to just block it out... on the other hand I'm trying no to overload it too much - any suggestions?

Morag: Love the vector art! The purple glowy bits look so cool

Quing: I'd go with the last phrase, it's the funniest of the 3. ^_^ As for Gui's dress, I agree with Charlie, it shouldn't be overcomplicated, just add some frills/lace on the edge of the skirt, and maybe a bit on the head of the boots.
She's gonna look so cute!

Blue: LOL you cracked me up with your post, but I feel bad for you still.
However, I don't think making Zhaitan a bit mecha is a problem, in fact, I think he looks very cool Plus, you can only really see it on his chest.

I added the trick-or-treat bags and some candy corn to my picture. Only the post work and drawing is left now, the 3D part is done.

Right, I believe I've finished

(clicky for hueg version)

I wanted to get away from the general pumpkin-nes of Halloween and go with my margo theme so here's a Word of Madness having some fun, while the evil moon is watching in amusement

Changed the effects a bit in the final version, added some details and gave the guy a slightly more evil eye ; more tentacles too, solved my background problem. as previously said, the creature is a cross between concept and ingame art - the ingame face is too fugly to replicate xD references from wiki - concept art and ing

hope you enjoy

Okay then, sounds like she's getting some lace on that skirt! Now I just have to draw the darn thing. Hopefully I can get most of it done tomorrow and just polish on Tuesday. The hardest part will be getting her pose right, since her whole body is going to be bending to her left and I don't want her to look like she's going to topple over. Getting the piece balanced with Ebia and Jenna in the background may prove tough, too. I still can't decide how chibi they are going to be - I want them to be small and a little chibi but still in the main style of the piece. And thanks Minami, I think I am going to go with that quote.

@Blue: Who cares if your Zhaitan doesn't look like the official one? They are going to be so blinded by his epicness they won't notice.

@Minami: Ooh, candycandycandy! Looks very nice. My only comment is that the lighting of the bags seems a tad off, but I can't place how. What is the drawing part going to be? *curious*

@Morag D: AAAAH, Tentacle Monster! Haha. Really looks good, though. I didn't think it would really turn out very Halloween but it actually really fits. Super cool style too.

@ Morag That looks really neat. :-) For some reason it reminds me of trading cards and I start thinking of little stats at the bottom.

@ Minami Are the upper trick or treat bags supposed to be behind her? I think some variation on the brightness would help with distance. It looks so cool, I wish I knew how to do that kind of work.

Quing & Kiya: Every bag has it's own point light in it, to make it light up like the bags in-game. The program calculates the light's distance from the render camera and renders it into the picture. I could try and lessen the light's intensity in the hind bags and see what that looks like. And yes, the top bags should be behind her.
As for post work drawing, I'm gonna make the pic look all "summony". Whoosh lines for the bags and candy, and smoke.

Kiya: That just looks SO damn awesome! ^_^ I wish I saw that in our neighborhood, I'd be like WOOOT!

Morag: Wow, your finished pic looks fabulous! Such a nice and unique form of art, very cool! ^_^

Oh my this all looks so incredibly good!
It makes me pink and fluffy inside to see so many people giving it their all, in both skill and originality, this halloween.

Meanwhile, I'm sick -_- I think I might be able to get better by tomorrow, if I take it easy, and so rescue the project in time.
I was getting stroppy with the strappies the day before yesterday, so I have made progress at least. So many details @.@ But it is what I wanted to do, so I better get through it with a half-hearted smile at least.

Morag D: it's missing some pumpkins ;P (not sure what the purple bit is on the moon?)

KiyaKoreena: what about putting the asura and golem in a more "active" situation, e.g., building some kind of pumpkin-based construction (like the funny ones the asura do)

BlueXIV: love your pic, what about making the Mad King "glow"? or have some kind of ghostly trail (or trail of ghosts)? Maybe increase the size of the columns in front of Mad King so make Zhaitan more impressive.

Really great art here, it's a very high level of artwork. I probably won't be able to submit anything due to the swine flu putting me back 2 weeks in my agenda :/ Good luck everyone, still 3+ days to go!

Seeing i just realised this, it is only 1 more day for all your creativity to come to one piece ... as i only just discovered this thread, i will share my work sofar ...

First off, i wanted to do something along the lines of the trailer, since that was the biggest news about GW all year, GW2 ! ... now seeing the rules state it has to be captured as a picture and my movie editing skills are very small (also lacked good software to make a trailer) ... i stalled this idea for a bit, but only for it to keep going around in my head ... So, i thought, if i cant make a trailer why not make a storyboard/comic sort of thing that convey's the same message ...

First thing i did was watch the trailer a couple of times, to catch all the spoken text, which i then converted into a halloween styled tekst along the same lines ...

Quote:
Tyria, Halloween

Pumpkins have always been here
Growning deep within the earth, beneath a tree
Waiting for the time to rise...

1 year ago, this pumpkin was just a seedling growing into a plant
It became a king who's name was written in the legends of Tyria
A King known as, Mad King Thorn

His candy army rose from the land, hungry for games and party
Our ancesters played all through the night
But Mad Kings Thorn's power was to great..

We have learned from those defeats
We learned that a single emote has no need to proceed
The emotes must be preceded by "Mad King Thorn says.."
So refuse to be knocked down..

Hero's come together in capitals
Discovering these games
New trick or treat bags, with presents or coal

It is time for legends to become real
...
...
Now! is the time, claim your mask
Win your bags..
So now i have the basic outline of my tekst, to be used in my story board, it then became a thing of converting this into pictures to go along with the tekst.. and ofcourse shave the tekst there where needed, depending on the availability of picture material, and my photoshop skills...

First i typed all the text and found a decent font for it, then i started to take screenshots ingame to (show off the quality of the GW1 engine, and) go with the lines i made sofar, to then use photoshop to merge these screens and pictures i found into images to go with the tekst ...

Here is where i stand sofar:

Then work stalled as i ponder the situation for the next picture, i found the perfect picture online, but its not a picture (/screenshot) i made myself, so i pondered about this: 'should i use this picture from some-one else, does it have any copyrights or do these copyright belong to Anet anyways, seeing it is a screenshot, does my work become less original when i use a picture not of myself, which i cant change to much as it is perfect for the line';

Ofcourse i have allready used pieces of screenshots of others to make the pictures sofar, but these were mere elements of the total picture, not a whole picture ... but i ponder to long i realise, as now i only have 1 evening and 1 day left ... so i probably will end up using it as well, there is hardly anytime to think of a way around this ... then a sigh of releave as i google for it again, it is a screen on the wiki, so i feel less worried about using it now, as i personally view this as a community share page, which means if one shares it, i can use it

Sooo, i will be busy tonight and tomorrow, and with me i think loads of others, hang in there, dont cut to many corners, enjoy your work and keep the deadline in mind ... Goodluck !!

Nope, s'far's I can tell everything is just great. That is soooooo adorable. I still want to know why ANet has not yet hired you to make their merchandise.

I know I've been complaining about how 2d art never wins, but I won't be at all unhappy if this wins.
