My mind is doubly blown! Guess I'll have to think of an extra neat idea for Wintersday then. I still can't believe someone else thought up and implemented the same idea x_x

The entrant who plagiarized another person's artwork got disqualified.

Hehe presentation is everything. Got it.

I got an HM tho, so I'm happy .

I said it many times before, over msn/gw/nolani, but GZ to Tzu. She deserves it. No QQing about costumes winning mmkay? She definitely put a lot of work into it (and burned herself like 2-3 times x_x), and the process was just as creative as doing any other form of art.

I was actually kinda surprised to see my entry on there, because it really was a pretty vague concept. I wanted to to illustrate Zhaitan destroying Lion's Arch on Halloween Eve, and the Mad King swooping in to save the day. I think all I accomplished was drawing a badass dragon xD.

But definitely, ANet seems to prefer character art over scenes. I'll keep that in mind for wintersday :P

But yea GZ Gurus, we got 6/19 spots. WE SHOOT FOR ALL 20 ON WINTERSDAY.

I really think there should be more honorable mentions and prizes, if they got hundreds of entries and there was so much good stuff.

I'm seeing a lot of other artwork that I think really deserves a small prize, like that siege turtle and some of the drawings.

Maybe the person drew a picture and took it to a tattoo artist to get it printed on him? That's the same as drawing any picture, no?

Anyway, gratz to the winners. I couldn't think of anything neat to do so I didn't even enter. Thinking about doing something for Wintersday though.

Am I the only one who is having a hard time understanding the cardboard flesh golem? Like... I can't figure out what angle I'm supposed to be looking at it. It's like those magic eye pictures. I just don't see it.

Edit: Eh sorta see it now. Kinda weird that the largest picture of it is from behind and of his arm.

That Gwen was really nice, but the reason I was upset with it was because it wasn't even made for the Halloween contest...it was done way before. Tzu's looks awesome AND she made it with the intent of turning of making it FOR the contest.

I completely agree. Won by using someone else's work it would seem. Even if he drew the original concept art to be turned into the tattoo, it's not the same as actually doing the tattoo - I use to work at a tattoo parlor designing tattoos. The cardboard flesh golem is cool and original, but what does it have to do with Halloween? If someone just drew a very well-done flesh golem, I highly doubt it would've won or even been considered. I'm still pondering how the Mad King's Guard is on the same level as the rest of the entries, and how some of those honorable mentions were even considered. And I don't get why costumes keep on winning. I respect the craft and know there's a lot of time and effort put into it just as there would be in other artistic styles, but where's the creativity in just copying something?

Oh well, guess I was wrong to think this is what they are actually judging the entries on. I think I'm losing faith in their contests unfortunately. Or maybe I'm just bitter that the update earlier ended my Costume Brawl winstreak like always :/

Oh, and I'll be fair and share my own entry so people can criticize it too.

If they're planning on giving another prize for the open slot, it'd be nice if I was considered. Though I'm not really holding my breath. Reaaaaaaally wish they had more spots for HM's for pieces like Minami's.

Anyways, I'll just post my submission again since everyone is sharing.

I'm more than a little annoyed that despite it being so "hard to choose only ten winners and ten honorable mentions" they have yet to select anyone to fill the plagiarist's spot.

I'm too tired and flustered at the moment to really think about the contest much, and I'm not looking to rail against anyone's wins right now. (and Tzu & all the Guruers who won DEFINITELY deserved it... ^__^)

So here, instead I'll join the sharing and maybe one or two of you can cheer up a bit from my entry.

There are quite a few entries that i am surprised didn't win. I really am surprised that Dyeane Altima's turtle didn't win, and the other one did. His or her's is so much better. It's Halloween decorated, and just looks amazing. Just because the one picture was blurry, it didn't win? The only blur i saw was when they candy corn was shooting out of the cannon. I don't understand how the close up of the plain ceramic turtle is "cooler" than Dyeane's.

I do really think a few of the entries were wonderful and deserved to win, but among the first turtle, i also though the tattoo should not have won. How is getting a tattoo artist to do a gw mad king on you, your own work? In the fine print on the gw contest site it said:

By entering the Guild Wars Halloween Art Contest 2009, (a) you agree to all of the terms and conditions of these Official Rules and Conditions, (b) you warrant that your entry is your own original work and that it does not violate any rights of any third party

Getting a tattoo however is not doing his or her own work. It's just submitting the work of a tattoo artist. Even if they DID drawl the picture (which i highly doubt, i think they printed it from the web and showed it to the artist like everyone usually does) how is it still his own work when someone else is doing the tattooing. The tattoo is what they found impressive, but he did not do the tattoo, an artist did. No offense to the one who got the tattoo, Just stating my opinion.

Also don't get how some of the TOT bag entries didn't win, i've seen two and they're both awesome. Judging was on... well .. this

Judging: Entries will be judged equally on the basis of creativity, style, and the melding of Halloween into a Guild Wars theme.

I don't see how some of those entries were a mesh of both Halloween and guild wars. Like the bone dragon picture was impressive in deed, but where was the Halloween mix? Perhaps it was dubbed Halloween like simply because they were Bone Dragons? As well as the ... well i think they are calling it a "Titan Effigy". Hardly anyone really knew what it was, i just don't see how it's Halloween and guild wars when no one can tell what it is. Just like the amazing looking cardboard flesh golem, that is undoubtedly amazing. It really is, but how does that mesh Halloween in with it?? It doesn't, it's just a big cardboard flesh golem that looks pretty cool.

I entered the contest too, i made a cake with candy corn men and a pumpkin mad king head (post is on page 1 if anyone wants to see, i think). So i'm kinda surprised some of these entries won, when my cake, or the amazing turtle by Dyeane, or even the tot bags by the two who posted in this thread previous did not win. They all molded the guild wars theme, with Halloween nicely. Also they were unique in a way of not being a costume or a drawling. I'm sure a lot of entries that deserved a winning position did not win. Again, no offense to anyone who did win, some of your entries were truly amazing just some i don't see why or how they possibly won. No offense as well to those who i questioned their work in my post, i meant no harm, just giving my opinion. I did think they were impressive. Just don't see how some meshed Halloween and Guild Wars.

All in all, good job to those who did win. It's a shame that only 20 could win. To bad it wasn't at least 50. I'm sure there were a lot of deserving prizes this year can’t wait to hear who the new winner will be. At least we can all hope to be dubbed the 20th winner now. I know I’m hoping that I get considered for it.

You obviously have never really tried making costumes before, have you.

Trust me, it takes a lot of time, effort, work, and yes, creativity, in order to translate something that only exists in a 2D form (and more likely than not completely defies the laws of physics) into something that exists in reality and can be worn.

I think the only reason I despise () the cosplay entries is because they do require so much work and dedication that they are shoe in for a win in my opinion. And Tzu did an amazing job on her entry, by far the best costume translation I've seen anywhere.

There were some great entries this year. I think it's funny that the same artist was plagiarized again this year though, just with a different piece. I'd never seen the original before but there was something about it that screamed NOT ORIGINAL to me. Still looked nice though!

I didn't win with my entry. But if ever I was to lose to others, I'm glad it was to this group.

Happy Halloween!

My entry didn't win a spot in the Halloween Art Contest this year, but I did win "Scariest Costume" at a local bar tonight, and won 500$. I also won a smaller prize of 100$ last year with the same costume at a different party (w/o the stilts, those were new this year).

I also enjoyed handing out candy last year in this costume and will enjoy it again this year.

Happy Halloween!!!

Well, seeing the quality of some that didn't win makes me feel a little bit better about not winning.

Prettied it up a little for the submission, had a quote from the Mad King, edited the Halloween moon into the background of the first picture up there, blurred signs of human settlement and named the armor pieces we were mimicking (Mo Zing Mask, Flowing Armor, Ascalon Pants).

Me too. It looks like something my cat made when it attacked a paper bag. I should have plagurized my cat's art apparently. Would have been a lot quicker than the 2 entire days I put into my craft project. And my sister-in-laws entry was even better than mine and I thought she would win for sure. She made a baking entry that was amazing and should have blown away any other baking entry submitted. Pretty much if you cant digitally paint or make a costume, you are hosed, unless you have an artistic dog or cat to make a project for you. I am going to see if my cat can puke up a fur ball that looks like Grenth and submit that for Wintersday. Quick, easy, and a sure fire winner.

are we the only ones who feel this way? i have two tattoos, the first one my sister drew for me to give to the artist because i had something exact that i wanted..but neither she or i consider it her work as the artist put it on me and put her own twist into it aswell..it actually ended up better than the concept

I think you misunderstood Regina's post. Both turtles had a working cannon. The picture of the winning turtle shooting something out of the cannon was a little blurry so they put the closeup on gw.com instead.

*calm breathing* Now I know why I don't go on GWW, ever... just read some horrible idiot bashing Tzu with insane accusations. I hate people. (I am sorry people are stupid, Tzu!)

What I'm annoyed about is that it appears one person will be denied an honorable mention he/she deserves because ANet is too lazy to fill that plagiarist's spot.

Anyway, if I were running the thing, I'd split it into categories of Costumes, Sculpture and Plushies, Decor, and 2D Art, with winners for each. But really, ANet's far too cheap to do that.

I'm sure Blizzard would have gotten it right. Much as I may prefer GW to WoW, I have to say, Blizzard actually gives a damn about their fanbase. Ah well, guess this is the price of a subscriptionless game.
