Festival Hats
Jinkies
Regardless of good or bad, Anet's new trend seems to be based upon microtransactions; BMP, Storage Tabs, Appearence Changes... and now costume purchases.
But what about old festival hats? Through my years in GW I have missed hats here and there, that I really wish I hadn't.. I might have been too busy or simply forgotten about them.
What if Anet started offering invididual, or packs (maybe by year) of festival hats to be available for purchase through the in game store? A small price, such as 99 cents, or 1.99 per hat could potentially attract alot of buyers. I know many people who wish they were able to get the santa hat, or the witch's hat, or the pumpkin crown and many other hats to collect them all if nothing more.
This also would allow players a more flexible mean of getting their hat. Because let's be honest, during the holiday seasons how many of us are traveling; or how many of us go on business trips throughout the year? We can't always be on Guild Wars and I for one would not mind paying a buck or two for some of my favorite hats.
Post yay/neigh in regards to the idea of offering festival hats through the in game store. Not yay/neigh regarding if microtransactions are good or bad.

First off, I don't like micro transactions. Second off, then the people who already have the hats would be cheated and wouldn't be really look on as "wow, he was there when this event happened a long time ago."

I think the same logic should be applied to festival hats, since the "wow" thing is e-peen and pathetic, and some hats that I missed due to obligations or computer issues look BETTER on my character than any armor hat.

Don't get me wrong, I'm mad I didn't get the Mummy Mask and Witch Hat, as I was gone during those festivals. But, I will live.

Besides, I don't want them for any sort of lame e-peen prestige lol, its more like I'd like to be able to dress appropriately for the event, and wearing the same witches hat every year is annoying lol.
Besides, a few PvE quests to allow hat unlocks would be easy content to create, and definitely something a lot of people would be interested in.

As much profit and pleasure this would cause for gw players who have missed hats here and there, I just can't sign. Reason being that people with the first year hats somehow show that they're experienced players/ they've been playing the game for a long time. These people would be cheated out of taking the time to get every hat since the game started, so, even though I would really love to have all the hats, I unfortunately am not signing.
I just think this is cheating those people out of their veteran(ship?).
/notsigned
Something I WOULD like to see though is the people can buy hats according to how old their account is. (ie if they started b4 the first wintersday, they can buy all the hats, etc). This prevents veterans from getting cheated out of their time to the game and helps to hopefully keep both sides happy.

I would absolutely love this, as i have missed out on numerous hats.
Even though i have had my account since day of launch i only have the festival hats from this year. This is mainly due to the fact that this has been the first year in the past 4/5 that i haven't been working over 70 hours a week.
So personally i would love to be able to get all those hats that i have missed out on due to IRL obligations. And if i have to pay a SMALL amount then i don't see the problem.

I was actually playing the first wintersday, but had just gotten the game and had no clue why Ascalon was covered in snow and presents were dropping in town. DUH! So I missed the first year hats by ignorance.

There are several hats that I would have loved to have. Unfortunately, my own fault for missing them, and the changes that make them viable to wear in explorables make them all the more precious. Out of respect for ppl that have been playing for ages, and have the items to show for it, I'll have to say that it's better that the hat-train passed us by.
The grenth/dwayna costumes are one thing, but being able to retroactively buy discontinued designs is uncomfortably close to the "money makes up for lack of effort" mentality of alot of micro transaction games.

would be cool to get hats of years past but it would ruin the exclusitivity that veteran players have in having the hats. although i know that i've also tossed some old hats before the hat keeper arrived >_< if i had known, i would have kept em

I'd say there are a lot of people who missed out on hats for reasons that were outside of their control. I like the ability to only get hats from after your account existed, as previously suggested.

What's the point of having a special festival item if you can just go back and get it any time. Plus, the hats are purely cosmetic.
The costumes are "limited edition" too, so they will presumably not be available any more after some time in January.
(Correction: Looks like the pack is limited edition, but the separate costumes are not.)

The system would have to allow you to only buy hats you would have logicly had access to since it's a tad unfair to have to choose between a hat and going to see grandmumy for one more Xmas before she kicks it...

I am not for buying festival hats with real money, but I'm all for getting them in game somehow(quests? zaishen coins?). It's a shame when truly dedicated players miss out on such prizes because real life often takes precedence. I was gone for the Halloween event this year, and would love to get some skeleton face paint, but alas...

@Everyone: What about this?
Even though I already posted it, most people prolly didn't see it so:
What if the hats were available to you according to how old your account is. For example, if your account was 4 years old, you could get all hats from the time u made ur account til now. That way, people dont get cheated out for getting them, and people don't get punished for not attending events b/c they couldn't make it.

MagmaRed
Only if they offer them in packages, not individual. Individual sales MAY get more people to buy, but the cost of selling an item for $1 isn't worth it for Anet. Grouping them as ALL Wintersday hats, ALL Halloween hats, all OTHER hats may work, but what would happen to future events with hats? So if I buy the pack today and get all the Wintersday hats, I'd get all except the ones for this year since they aren't out yet. When we get the hats this year, and I'm not around to get mine, would I then have to buy another pack to receive it? Because of this simple fact, I'm not sure it can work. But it may be possible to code it to provide all hats for the qualifying purchase after the events are over through the Festival Hat NPC.
Sharkinu
Grouping them by years would be great. Festival hat unlock pack [2005]; Festival hat unlock pack [2006]; Festival hat unlock pack [2007] etc.
This would be great fo those that missed the hats not because they coudn't log in at the time of the event, but because they didn't had an accout by then.

I missed the first few first wintersday hat/tengu and punkin head
cause I was doing other RL stuff and thats my own fault and I live with it.
It would lower the " I was there" factor for players.
This also applies to the sparkly hands and stuff from collectors editions
i hope they never add them to the store either ( even if I really really want them )

That's the cost you pay. I missed a few as well. Oh well. Maybe you'll get lucky and A.net will release "scary pumpkin hats" and others that are sorta enough like the originals so that people can be satisfied. But I don't want to see the originals lose all meaning... especially with costume armor allowing people to wear this stuff all the time. I'd expect a big increase in these headgears usage.
