Yes, I was so peeved that they bothered patching that "trick". I mean, how does it help really? So you can level opponents, big deal :P
As to the hitting 16 fast thing; I can't imagine how long it would take; I need to find someone willing to do relatively quick runs to kill just the bosses I guess; I can't solo too well (maybe it's just my playstyle?) as the hunter groups just hit too hard - my nightmare groups are 2 shaman/2 hunters (shudder) - Warriors are a cakewalk, nothing like a frenzying Charr in a symbol of wrath to make you feel good. Any advice on tactics to take on hunters would be great, given that I'm also a ranger I need to be able to shoot them; I have managed to position so that their shots hit a hill while mine get them just over the curve, but it can be tough to do.
Maybe my strategy is wrong; you seem to advocate leaving the warriors till last, while I tend to try to get them to follow me, preferably into cover from the others, then plant symbol of wrath, bane signet one, and begin shooting to finish them off (R/Mo) this typically drops 2 warriors in about the 5 seconds Symbol of Wrath takes to run it's course, unless there are 2 shaman and I mistime the bane signet. It's the darned ranger/caster groups that I find tough, because I don't have much non-LoS damage and thus I typically end up having to present a target to them. My wolf is a decent tank, but he's a dire wolf and the health penalty hurts him a bit, even though he does great damage as a result.

I know the 2 Hunter, 2 Shaman groups, they're definitly the strongest. The Hunters deal all the damage, so you want to get them down as fast as you can, though, you can't win of 2 Shamans healing the same Hunter. It's not that bad with a high damage axe, but with a sword, it's really hard as a Warrior.
I regret buying that 6-18 Hand Axe though. An axe is great, because it has AOE damage that deals extra damage, and you have Executioner's Strike, wich is simply insane with high Axe Masteery, though, the sword skills are great too. I'm probably going to try combining them today. Getting Adrenaline before the fight, Gashing and Server Artery'ing the enemy, switching to axe, and killing them, then do it again on the next enemy. I'm afraid it won't work though. Probably getting a high damage axe soon

What's the highest damage sword out there (other than the ascalon razor)
The W/R is nice because you can bleed them and have the pet attack them while you're healing. It's not the fastest way but you can tank through just about anything. It's usually Troll's, attack 4x, sever, Sig, Trolls, attack 4x, sever, gash, dead. When there are just a couple left you can chuck in frenzy to finish them off more quickly.

Ascalon Razor? Don't you mean the craftable Rinblade, 10-14 Damage?
Anyway.. My old axe was and 11-15 Brute Sword, not sure if that's the maximum though, there's probably a higher damage sword out there.

I did a ranger up to level 16. The only quest I took was the first one from Artemis for 500. I needed to do that in order to acquire the ranger skills. Took about 90 hours I think. I had the advantage of having an Ithas bow though. I spent a lot of time on my sniper hill next to the charr fire stand. From the top of the hill, I stand next to the little tree, and I can shoot a long long ways. Hitting a charr shaman for 100+ down hill as the opening salvo is quite nice
I agree that the 2 hunter + 2 shaman group is the worst one. The axe/sword ones are actually not that bad. When they frenzy up, they go down real fast.

yes we all know about God Antipowers...
I knew about him when he was only lvl 16. :P
You can still lvl up any bad guys you want in pre-sear as long as its next to a spawn point. it will still take a long time, but you can still reach lvl 20 in pre.

Nah, it's way too hard to get to lvl 18 or higher unless I haven't find the right way yet. I hope ANet "un-nerfs" this leveling method, otherwise, I still hope for a good reason.
And God Antipowers is well known, since he's the only lvl 20 in all the American and Europe Pre-Searing servers (Korean probably has 5000 of lvl 20 character..). There's also a W/Mo that's lvl 19, but he's a real bitch, whispering him with nice things like "Great! You're lvl 19!" or "Do you mind telling me how you got your boots?" or whatever, it doesn't matter, he thinks he's god because he's lvl 19, and ignores everyone that isn't equal to him. Lame!

It's not just the level nerf that was changed, it's also the drops that are considered to be nerfed. Finding a bow that's over 10-15 damage in pre is nearly impossible now where around 3 months ago anything under 11-18 damage dropped from time to time. I also noticed that now many more 8-11 no-req bows tend to drop now...
Many of the very high damage weapons that exist in pre now are in fact weapons that date from the pre nerf age

In descember I found a 6-16 axe and a 12-19 bow. Maybe more rare but not gone.

Do the drops get any better after you level the Charr? For example, if you level them to 15, do they drop goodies as a level 15? Could you in theory get good items then, but simply leveling them enough? After all, in theory God Antipowers or another level 20 could level opponents to 26, and then get very reasonable drops one would expect.
lyra_song
i still have my pre-sear longbow thats 12-18
Maxiemonster
DreamCatcher might be right, drops have been far worse for me too. My best axe was 6-15, my best bow was 10-17, my best sword was 10-13 and my best hammer 13-20.
And Epinephrine, from my knowledge dropped items or not based on level, with my level 18 Mesmer back in the old days I never had anything far above avarage drop, even though, I've killed level 20 and 21 Charr quite some times with that character. I think it's just decided when you enter a zone, and it doesn't change when they level up.
And a question from me:
What's the best bow you've ever found without requirements? Since having a no requirements Longbow for pulling is great, and I wonder my 9-13 Longbow is the best I can get.
Damn. I can't wait till Guild Wars: Factions is buyable! An Assassin Pre-Searing character, ZOMG!

I don't know what the best in presearing is, but the best bow without requirements I've seen is the Candy Cane Bow that does 15-15 damage...

But 9-13 is most likely the best no req bow you'll find. try finding a no req bow with some good mods on it.
Best no req wand/rod I've seen damage wise is I think 6-10, best no req shield is ofcourse 8 armor. Best no req sword I can remember I had recently was a 7-10 butterfly sword. Best no req axe is 5-10 for sure. Can't remember a better no req one right now.
I'm reasonably positive about the 9-14 damage bow though but it was a shortbow, so not realy good for pulling anyway
Maxiemonster
Guess I'll be fine with my Longbow, 9-13, +10% damage (while health is above 50%) Hehe. A 9-14 would still be awesome though

It would ROCK if at some point they took that Shred out of the game and then made it the key to getting a cool quest item. You all had your chance to be nice to Gwen..

I have noticed a significant improvement in northland drops in the last 2-odd weeks. it seems that 11-18 bows drop more often now (or should I say, they drop again). Also been seeing higher damage axes (to 6-15 damage even). I have also noticed this increase in weapons stats as some of the charr do way more damage now
Also there has been amother significant change in pre; When your teammate dies in the northlands, he's no longer autoressed even when you did not bring signet. This could also have been done in another attempt to kill off any possible way to reach lvl 20 in pre (atleast to any non-botters ). There is the possitive side to this as I have taken some lvl 1 peeps up north, which promptly died ofcourse, who enjoyed watching me clear the charr flame temple
Another thing they changed was the pre-dyable armors (so dyed armor in pre no longer means it's a pre toon, unless it's the collector armor instead of the starter armor). Also they seem to have deleted the starter head armor (another pre nerf?..)
Oh and I have changed my build lately (am R/Me); I swapped conjure with read the wind so now the only mesmer skill I bring is ether feast (gotta have 2 heals up there).

I haven't noticed many better drops myself but you could be right. I did notice the "res-nerf", I don't really mind though, since I mostly solo. About the helmets.. I noticed when you create any proffesion besides Warrior you don't get a helmet, though, what if you already had a non-Warrior in Pre-Searing, did the helmet got deleted? If not, I really regret choosing Warrior, instead of Ranger. And I can't really follow you on the dyes and pre-toon and blalblabla, care to explain a bit better?
EDIT: Excisting characters still have their headpiece, damnit.

Sry bout the messy text, I'll explain. now you can dye your armor before you start playing your new toon. You can start with all blue armor now if you wanted to.
You can choose your armor color just like you can choose your hair color now!!
And about the missing head armor, I dunno why Anet would even go through the trouble to delete the starter head armors of all non-warriors...nerf??
Even though the armor level of those armors is soo low it doesn't realy affect the damage you take that much. The only thing this 'head armor update' has caused is even more questions being asked in pre about missing head armor (right from the very beginning people have been asking about the location of the presearing headgear collector...which doesn't exist!!)

I don't care about the dyes, if you want to show you used dyes on your armor, just take the collector's armor, which you should take anyway, since stats are always above looks unless you're retarted, especially as a Warrior or Ranger And if you really want that special starter armor look, dye it either silver or black
I wonder why ANET screws the permapre players so often, did we offend them or something? I WANT MY OLD PRE BACK YOU BULLIES!

Hmm.. I didn't think of this, and you maybe you didn't either. You know that when you farm the same spot for too long, the drops get suckier very quickly, and I've been hunting Charr from lvl 6-15 (yeah, turned lvl 15 today! ) now, and it's pretty stupid I haven't thought about it, but the game just thinks I've been farming the same spot for too long.
I thought about this because I get 1 purple item every 2 runs, which was getting pretty normal for me, though, I was "power leveling" somone at the Charr, who get 2 purple items of the first 2 groups we killed, they were both pretty high damage too.

Maxie,
Since this is a guide for people staying a while in Pre, how about including some of the scenic spots, besides Melandru's Garden?
There's a few things postcard-worthy:
Piken Square
The climbable hill by the Baradin Estate
The abandoned Abbey at the far West side of Pre
The 'secret' bear-hunter quest
There are a few more as well.

Yeah, I was thinking about it, though, this is more likely a short guide to get high lvl effectivly, and not about pre-searing itself, since there are many beutiful looking spots in pre-searing

Right where it should be, above the Wall. Just past the spot where you rescue the Ranger. It's actually the same piken from Post, but it's clean and very pretty.
There's also the spot where you can look down into the Catacombs.
The cave beyond the Baradin Estate (you can see the Wall foundations here)
And I forgot to take a screenshot of the stained-glass window on the church at the far North-East corner above the wall. It's broken, but I've been it somewhere before.

Anyone knows C. Almasy in here? He's so mysterious.. When I ask him stuff, which I often do, since I'm a fan of his lvl 19 pre-searing Warrior, I always get such strange replies. Gwen's mystery isn't even close to him. When I whisper him he tells me:
"Stick to forums, Maxiemonster".. What does it mean? I seriously wonder this.
He also said "Shall I break it down for ye. I don't speak with your kind." when I asked him if he sold any great weapons, which I heard he did.
And because of the forum related reply I got, he probably visits this forum, anyone ever seen this guy..?
EDIT: A pre-searing friend of mine also knows this guy, He told him "I do not talk to people who do not serve my fellowship", which made my friend ignore him. He's also online at all times on his C. Almasy character, and he's always in strange districts, never in district 1. If you "find" him, like another friend of mine did, he just leaves the district. This guy is so damn weird.

Were is Aiden in Pre-Searing?
Rayne Nightfyre
Wow, very well done! It has always baffled me how someone gets to level 20 in pre-searing. But it's a little clearer to me now. Just as an obvious note to a newer player reading this, by no means feel obligated to stay in Pre-Searing, it's meant to be training. Level 5-10 is a good time to head into Post-Searing. But for veteran players, it's an awesome place to take a break from all the "1337 h4x pwning n00bs," like Maxie said. Again, very nice job.

I've made a warrior pre, and just came accross the guide. ATM, I have an armour 8 shield, a rinblade, and I usually go with a guildie (monk) to kill all the charr. But I have some questions about how you solo'd them as a W/R (I'm using ranger skills too, but I haven't chosen the profession yet).
1. How did you get over the wall without another player? Did you get someone just to open it for you?
2. How many times did you die?
3. Got any tips if there are ashen claws AND chaots? They really mess me up ><

jtchans, Aiden is south of the fisherman's village. Follow the icy place all the way down untill you get at the non-icy part again and you should see a windmill, there's the fisherman's village. Then just walk through it and you should find Aiden somewhere in front of his house there.
Thanks for the compliment rayne, and indeed, don't feel forced to stay in pre-searing when you're new. Post-searing is very great, though, staying in pre-searing after you've been in post-searing for so long is great in my opinion.
And islyan, try using the Tall Shield (Armor: 4, Armor +10 (vs Charr), Health +15) from a certain quest (forgot which one), it's most likely better then your shield, unless your shield has +Health or -Damage Recieved (while hexed), which are both great mods in my opinion. Now here are the questions:
1. I pay someone (mostly 20g, which is much to many starting players), before he pulls the lever, to pull the lever, then I stand between the two doors in the tunnel till the other player has left, then I walk through the second door, which is possible. Don't pay afterwards, since he might not leave, and that would waste alot of time.
2. If I die, I die because I'm facing a group of 4 Charr with 2 Hunters in it. Hunters are endlesly strong and even kill me with ease if they're both equiped with a great bow, which matters ALOT.
3. Chaots are usually my first target if a Monk goes along. Chaots use Shatter Enchantment, and since the Monk is most likely using Healing Breeze/Hands, they'll get shattered at all time, which gets annying. Ashen Claws are very weak, I can't figure out how they mess you up, unless your pet has the Ashen Claw's "Mark of Pain" skill on him, and getting hit by Hunters/Axe Fiends/Blade Storms, which messes you up. If that's the thing, get out of your pet's range, Mark of Pain is simply a painful spell when used against you effectivly.

Mark of pain is a real nuisance as it halves my attack speed (which halves the damage I do which makes it takes twice as long to kill 1 of the charr while taking damage the whole time). Ashen claws realy hurt rangers, often I find myself killing the ashens first THEN the hunters lol. Ofcourse shamans always have to go down first and i tend to keep the chaots alive till I've slayn all the others. the order in which you should kill the charr (greatly) depends on your profession(s)
And to RBK who wrote:
These are the maximum stats on weapons found in presearing and are considered to be 'max-damage' for pre. These are random drops and 11-17 swords may be very hard to find. just like you can get a bow in pre with 12-20 damage BUT the prblem is that these bows drop very rarely in pre (in 7 months in pre I've seen only 4 bows with 12-20 damage.....EVER).
if you happen to find the owner of a 11-17 sword in pre chances are that 1: He won't be willing to sell it, or 2: We will ask a very high price for it, maybe even in excess of 4k or so (4k is a lot in pre, remember theres no way to get anything from post to pre and farming 4k in pre takes a while...unless you're a f@#$%in scammer ofcourse...). Also those high damage pre-weapons tend to have very high requirements so that it wouldn't even be that much of a use to someone who's level 8 or below in pre
The rinblade is pretty good though, and a 10-15 bow is almost as good as a 12-20 one and way easier to find. It more comes down to using skill then to using weapons that do 10% more damage. Ofcourse having (some of) the best weapons in pre definately make things easier
And to RBK who wrote:
