Just make the textures on a new file, then copypasta like crazy. It's like making a collage - saves a LARGE amount of time.
So almost like photomanipulating
That looks seriously awesome, though. I'm loving the background.
01 Jul 2011 at 15:41 - 1123
you've certainly taken a leaf out of the concept artist's books, and it's working really well! I'm half expecting some fire and smoke now!
01 Jul 2011 at 16:31 - 1124
@Del: Whimsical!
@Drel: Thanks, Drel. The background was slightly inspired by a scene in LOTR. There's a giant valley they're passing through with colossal statues of their kings carved into the sides of the mountain face. Pretty awesome scenery.
@Nian: Thanks
@Hail: Welcome back, lol. There are going to be a few minions in there, some dead flora in the foreground, and a little more added to the background. Not to mention the effects in between to make it a handsome animation.
@V: Yeah, I guess it is kind of like photomanipulation. Gives you a good reason to draw out a lot of textures, buildings, etc to re-use in areas. I'm surprised how much fun I'm having with the collage aspect of it, considering how much I hate using scissors and glue. I think it's just the mess factor of it.
@Morag: Definitely, that kit turned on a huge lightbulb in my head in terms of how to work. I already knew that Daniel Dociu was the master of matte painting. But I didn't know that the other artists used it in large portions of their work as well. I was always under the impression that it all came from custom brushes.
01 Jul 2011 at 20:16 - 1125
DAMN! That's all I can say on the Shala art.
And yeah I should've read you said Acrylic , it's just my mind has been all over the place lately >_<"
Oh when are you going to make tutorial on textures or just tips overall? I am so bad at this. I have been trying and been failing miserably QQ
02 Jul 2011 at 09:35 - 1127
I think the colors in the background are very GuildWars 2ish, really remind me of some of the Norn concept arts. Texture looks good indeed. Though I must say Shala doesn't fit in. It might be because you drew her first and then added the background to it. But she just isn't part of the whole scene yet, she looks like she's pasted in. Perhaps I'm running ahead of you and were already planning on changing it a bit, but just my 2 cents
02 Jul 2011 at 12:32 - 1128
I have to agree with Tommy. You achieved it better with version nr.2 but she doesn't look to fit in so well.
02 Jul 2011 at 16:19 - 1129
It's mostly just that she looks like she's hovering, instead of actually grounded, and the lighting confuses me. I can't tell where it's supposed to be coming from Shala also looks kind of washed out and low-contrast in comparison to the background.
All fairly easy things to fix, though. Gradient maps are amazing for helping make images fit together so that they look like one cohesive picture.
04 Jul 2011 at 00:04 - 1130
Ah, more LotR inspiration - and more reason for me to finally get around to watching these movies! That sounds pretty epic.
LOVING the colors here, by the way~
04 Jul 2011 at 07:41 - 1131
@Toms: It's mostly that she was more of a placeholder for me to judge the rest of the picture on. She was just sort of there to "help fill in the blank" for the animation in a way. Though getting her to fit in relation to the picture comes more at the end with final lighting. Not to mention simplifying a few of her textures since she was shrunken down from a massive size.
IH: What's nr.2?
@V: I was dumb and uploaded the wrong version. I only just now noticed that I posted the version with no sky, lol. It's in the newer version now.
@Drel: You'd better get to it on watching those movies. Don't make me come over there.
Changed the background colors to make it look a little more "dead" and less super heated. Still playing around with the colors I want on the green smoke. Still leaning more towards something a little more red to match the atmosphere and Blood Magic.
Taking a little longer than usual to finish this because of the animation. Seems like the still image version and the animation will be really different in terms of zombie numbers.
04 Jul 2011 at 08:22 - 1132
That looks a lot better. I see I jumped on the critiqueboat a bit too soon Those hands coming from the ground is really great, I can't wait to see the animation. Are you going to animate just the green lights or are you really going to make them move? I really would like to see them popping out of the ground Once I get a bit better at painting you'll definitely have to teach me this! I'm so in love with those GuildWars2 cinematics, so I'm really exited on how this will turn out!
04 Jul 2011 at 08:42 - 1133
ooh epic! the hands are a great touch! and the minion made me lol so much xD
I'm just thinking the sky might be a bit too powerful, it draws most of my attention at the moment.. but I'm sure you'll bring it round
04 Jul 2011 at 14:30 - 1134
cute minion
and I like the hands - especially the one thats reaching for her skirt (belt?)
04 Jul 2011 at 16:12 - 1135
Okay, yeah, that one looks a lot better. I still think Shala looks a bit too desaturated and lacking in contrast compared to the rest of the image, especially with how vivid the sky is.
Epic minion, btw. They should look like that in-game.
04 Jul 2011 at 17:09 - 1136
The one you last posted before I posted. But I didn't know it was just a placeholder for now. The background looks really good.
04 Jul 2011 at 18:24 - 1137
I'll try to get hold of them, but we don't have a video rental place here and my brother doesn't have them after all. D:
I'll have to ask Gattsu's cousin.
If minions looked like that in-game, I'd probably run a minion master build a lot more often~ 'Til then, Spiteful Spirit still has my vote.
That. Is. Epic. I really like the green glow.
07 Jul 2011 at 19:38 - 1138
As much as I liked the newer Lord of the Rings films they're freaking long lol. I see that not too long ago they released an extended version boxset out on blue-ray. Each movie was like 3 hours to begin with. What's the extended version? 4 hours?
Aragorn was one of my favorite characters though. Cool, collected, and great costume design.
Love the picture. Looks like she's casting Aura of the Lich.
08 Jul 2011 at 15:11 - 1139
Yeah, they're long.
And they still cut a ton from the books And are amazing
10 Jul 2011 at 21:56 - 1140
BRAAAAAAAAAIIINNNNZZZZZ
Summer school starts tomorrow. I'll be working on the animation and SFX whenever I get the chance in between classes.
10 Jul 2011 at 22:07 - 1141
*cheers* I saw it on DA already and its awesome!
11 Jul 2011 at 08:05 - 1142
Haha those minions are epic. Badass charlie, can't wait for the animation. Or the rit painting for that matter

Stunning... absolutely stunning, can't wait for animations!!
12 Jul 2011 at 07:45 - 1146
Charlie, That's wonderful. I am looking forward to the animation. Hope you are having fun at the summer school, will we see the results of that too?
12 Jul 2011 at 14:27 - 1147
So awesome I anticpate the animation... with much anticipation o.O
Why are you doing summer school (out of curiosity)? Is it to get ahead? I can't imagine what you would have failed at an art school D:
12 Jul 2011 at 15:54 - 1148
Wow, that is lovely. I'm excited to see it animated! You've definitely succeeded at making the scene 'epic.'
12 Jul 2011 at 19:46 - 1149
Your stuff is so awesome, and I can't wait to see it animated, though it's definitely more than epic on it's own.
Seriously, I've learned a lot just from looking at your art and your WIPs you've posted and the critiques you've given me (and others). Just need to say thanks for that ^^
13 Jul 2011 at 03:07 - 1150
@Hail: Just sit tight until I get the animation up and running. It wont' be as long or looping like the one I did for Iron. BUT, it will be far more exciting and seem like a proper cinematic since I won't have to do loop.
@Toms and Raven: A ranger wielding a monk that is firing a Jesus Beam. That is all.
@Black: Thanks Black, glad you like it.
@Aero: Pft, I wish I was taking studio classes instead of the ones I'm taking now. I'm only taking GE's right now - Geology & a corresponding lab.
@Death: Actually, I don't go to a private art university - can't afford it. I go to a state university - Cal State Long Beach. The school has a pretty fantastic arts program, equal to an art institute, sanz the $60K tution fees.
And I'm just taking these classes so I can hopefully graduate come Fall. The less GE's I have to worry about getting in the way of my studio courses, the better.
@Drel: Thanks, I think this is one of my new favorite pieces. Probably because it was a big learning experience for me. That, and there's a difference in terms of how I painted objects that I like. This feels a bit more "illustrative" than my other drawings.
@V: We'll see about that, the idea I have for the animation is going to be pretty big.
We all learn from each other one way or another
13 Jul 2011 at 03:54 - 1151
As always, your pics are amazing! ^_^
I really like the color schemes, and the reaching zombie on the right (the arrows are a nice touch ).
Also, cool sig! I'm still trying to come up with something cool and not lame >_<

I...what?
And don't get me started on how expensive private schools are >:{

What's GE?
Awww, I am disappointed. Geology can be fun though, especially on the coast

That is all, indeed.
OT: I was gunna say, I wouldn't understand how you could fail any art-based course Hopefully summer school doesn't take TOO long.

Hahahahaha, brilliant DBAA!

ok, this is so awesome, I have just been laughing for 10 minutes flat. And then I read Verene's comment and had to laugh even more. One of the epic moments of Nolani
