Guild Wars post mortem .
Rhododendron
Both a question and suggestion.
Do you think that sooner or later everyone from Guild Wars will move on to Guild Wars 2, and from one reason or another there will be a day when the old Guild Wars will just shut down ?
And if so, knowing that the game doesn't even start without a running internet connection , wouldn't you like to have the option of being able to still run around the game offline ? One can finish the main story line alone . I would love to know if they can make the game to run offline and give you the feel that regardless of its nature , you still own the game years after the servers went down. I mean its still a game that we love. And as it is , at least for me not knowing much of an usual MMO's last years behavior its still something that you can't keep on a shelf.

Why bother? The only reason people play at this point is for titles for GW2 or for their guild or whatnot.
Operations
It would be nice to have an offline version before they close the servers, or at least a server side version so small groups can make their own servers (like Guild Servers or what not) for those people that want to keep playing it with friends after it is not supported, but don't bet on it.
Shayne Hawke
The only reason to play GW once GW2 comes out is because you don't have GW2, you're trying to get some kind of benefit in GW2 through GW, or you like GW more. I wouldn't be surprised to see skill balances stop happening after some time that GW2 has been out, and at that point, GW becomes super boring to even bother with.

Hell, more people still play EQ over EQ2....if GW2 is bad, that could happen again.
Dre
they might turn GW F2P
with a number of microtransactions that are banned from pvp
(just a guess, though, but as long as they can keep earning money from GW1, they probably will)

I don't think they'd be able to shut off the servers without making a single-player version available to play. I don't think they'll ever completely shut off the servers at all, really. Maybe a number of them, not all of them.
Zahr Dalsk
It is entirely possible another company might step in and offer to provide hosting for the small remainder of the community.

I don't think the servers will go down unless Anet ceases operations. A few nostalgic players will continue playing forever, but the server(s) needed for them to play will be so few as to be negligible.

That said, I'll probably get GW2 as well if my friends do, even tough I believe it will be nowhere as good as GW1 when it first came out.

i would really like to see a version of the game that is ran from the HD with the option for online LAN play. i have a home network and my friends and i who play could still then play cuz this game still rocks even with the shitty skill updates LOL atleast then there wouldnt be any more fail updates. i'm up for that LOL

If I buy a DvD or book or CD, I can still use it a decade later, as long as I have the compatible hardware. Its a reasonable question to ask whether or not the same will be true for a Video game purchase.

i love gw
i will always play it so long as i am given the ability
gw2 is going to be big and it will tie in with gw1 nicely in so that gw1 will not be left untouched by players UNLESS they want to limit their gw2 experience
of course this is just an assumption, thats the function... but hey, it's better than nutthin.
you dig???

Or they could just release the code of the game so people could play on private servers like every other older game.

Player-created updates that would actually create some balance in this broken game.
Fap
If they don't fix it, and they probably won't, then yes, definitely. It'd be good to have private pvp servers where you can balance the game tho.

This right here. I have invested time and money into something, so I would like to have the option and the hope, that they will not one day close down the servers in favor of GW2.
Grunntar
Personally, I don't think that there's a "snowball's chance in Balthazar's realm" that they will ever release the code, or make this a single player game.
It will only ever be in their full control, and only on their servers.
They will likely keep GW alive for some time, because you will still be able to add more achievements in your HoM, and have them reflected in your GW2 rewards.

Might want to take that there nostalgia filter off your glasses before comparing the 5 year old game with the game that we've barely seen at all.

GW2 is being conceived as another "me-too" MMORPG.
So little we know about GW2, I'm not really convinced right now. They chose not to retain any aspect that made its prequel great, so they must really unleash something so great to surprise me for me to buy it and play it.

Well its a matter of opinion, they have to strike the right balance or it will be a flop. Many people enjoyed low levels, hunting for skill unlocks and non-solo play while many did not, so if Anet thrashes the wrong game elements it could be a great exodus of the fan base.

Troll topic or not, OP is an idiot.
There are always going to be a steady flow of people playing any old game. There are less then 30,000 people playing D2, and blizzard seems to have kept them up 10 years+. Despite being p2p, EQ1 has also managed to stay around for 10 years with never more then 1 million people playing it, along with that same amount playing the sequel, at almost 6 years.
Nothing is going to happen to GW so stop worrying about it.
If such an event does occur (one would HOPE GWLP:R is still being developed).

I disagree. As someone who's purchased a product, he has a right to know when that product will no longer be available. I personally have always been surprised that some gamers don't seem to care if they can no longer play a game. In fact that very idea is one reason I hesitate to play online games in the first place.

Way to go consumer fairness.

ArenaNet has stated in the past that the servers will stay up as long as there are enough players. So the duty of every player who wants the game to continue is to make sure you play it on a regular basis.
Now this is not a "forever" promise and they have never even addressed private server questions. But I can picture the game in the future with the only remaining server sitting in someone's office, as I'm sure some of the ANet employees will still be playing it.

to be fair, they have already said tht they are gonna keep up servers when gw2 is released, if there are benefits through HoM they will keep gw up so that people can get these achievments, also it may mean more gw sales finally they said they will enter open beta in mid to late 2010 so its another year. what I hope is that through the HoM in gw 2 if there is one, you can look at past events and these events will be gw storyline missions fRom the first game.

I didn't mean to start an argue about the game's ability to keep players online but try to figure a way of making it work even after 20 years .
I might be a lowlife that lost a thousand of hours playing around, compared to other more social life oriented characters reading or not reading this, but i enjoy my purchased games to work a very long time after i payed money for them unless the next major earthquake hits close or the flesh eating gorillas stampede near my home.

Point is, you can't discard offhand the possibility of a suck-quel until the game is out and proven not to be. People will continue to play GW1 regardless of GW2. Anyone trying to tell you otherwise is a newkid who's still wet behind the ears in their gaming career, and as such can be ignored safely.
Darcy
I think it's too early for ArenaNet to discuss GW's afterlife. The game is good to go for several more years until they reach the point where they say "enough" to getting the HoM benefits in GW2. When they announce that deadline is the time to start bombarding them with scenarios for continuation as they will be looking at the remaining playerbase in GW.

The real question is: Will Anet hold to their word?
They've said they would support it as long as "people play it". This is far from an accurate statement, and barely seems official. Rather something one employee smacked on there to settle the issue quickly.
The bottom line is that it will, obviously, come down to Anet's willingness to pay for servers that don't net any money. And you got to be honest here, from past experience we know Anet isn't too motivated to invest in a bodemless pit. (Look at GW now)
Obviously, were not at that point yet, and it is most definatly possible some of devs can convince Anet not to let this beautifull world die.
Then as final option, I can always see company promoted (commercialized) servers, or simply an offline version getting release, if not by "hackers". (GWLP)
So in overal, the safe conclusions we can draw is:
-It's unlikely GW will ever get completely shut down. (For atleast the comming 10 years that is)
-It's unlikely Anet will keep paying for it, so it will likely be alternative.
