Why all the hostility?
ambergris
Maybe I missed something as I haven't been on Guru for awhile but reading some of the questions and subsequent answers there seems to be a lot of people who need to vent.
Given, Anet is not a perfect company, Guild Wars is not a perfect game and a small segment of the community leave a bit to be desired but to answer a newcomer's question with such venom aimed at the above mentioned is really disheartening and unnecessary.
If you're not happy, take your complaint to the appropriate people and if that doesn't work, just take your business quietly elsewhere.
Why make it a downer for everyone else?

But yeah the game has trolls and the forums have trolls too. Its just a given that not everyone is helpful and some people enjoy being jerks.
Whats the old saying mommy used to tell us? If you don't have something nice to say don't say anything at all maybe?

some people are upset because things arent working, others are upset because things have changed too radically for their pleasure, etc.....
People (some of us) like to play to relax, when things arent right, it messes up are relaxing time---which can make people truly cranky!
They post here about problems the game, that they are trying to relax or enjoy etc, is having and some go way over the edge in their posts.
(and yes some are just trolls--please dont feed them).

In my opinion, the biggest problem with all of the complainers is that they blame everything on ANet, even though they are trying the best they can.
Also, when people get mad about skill updates, saying "why not just leave it?" or "it should have been like this!", nobody really considers the amount of testing done in order to keep the game as balanced as possible. And yes, I am aware of all of the skills still unbalanced. But in reality, there are so many skills in the game, and the amount of time needed to balance each one, it would be unrealistic to make every skill as balanced as possible.
Wow... I feel like I could use this to make a Chris Crocker-esque video... "Leave ANet alone!"

I personally would be a lot less jaded if I weren't being punished for playing to have fun. What does take your business elsewhere mean? A lot of people still play because it's free and there still a lot to like about the game. Being quiet is also a lot harder when Anet doesn't speak much about various issues or at least well enough.

Back to the topic, though. I've found forums in general, and this one specifically, to be full of uncalled for abuse. A lot of people seem to be suffering from jealous ex syndrome. Things haven't worked out between them and GW so they stalk GW and try to prevent anyone else enjoying it. I've never had an answer, let alone a satisfactory one as to why people keep posting on this forum when they no longer play or enjoy the game. Move on.
I don't see there being a fine line between a noob and someone with no life. But everyone posting seems to be thrown into one or the other categories. A bit sad really.
The again, it may just be that the negative comments stick in your mind. If there are 5 harmless and helpful replies and one abusive and pointless one then you are likely to rememebr the bad one.

I thought OP was complaining about how newcomers are treated. Everyone is replying as if it's about the anti-anet posts?
If it is about the way newcomers are treated then there are some reasons. Being a newcomer doesn't give you a right to be lazy, asking the same questions that have been asked hundreds of times before rather than search is going to get a response. Similarly, not bothering to read the forum rules before posting is going to turn up the heat too.
Perhaps OP has something specific in mind? If so, lets hear it and a sensible answer may then follow.

Let me lay my case out for the OP. It is caused by broken "goals" (since Anet will never admit it breaks a promise), milking the playerbase, and late/untimely/ineffective updates.
1. The thing that started it for most people: Gw2 itself. Now most people won't complain about getting a shiny new game, but the subsequent announcement that GW1 would quietly die away as they scaled back resources, new campaigns, and updates has pissed and continues to piss off many old players to this day. Frankly, most have moved on to games that keep their stuff current.
2. Beta by the end of 2008. Um... yeah we still don't even have the profession/mechanics information, and its a year and a half later. Call it a miscalculation on their part, but regardless they faulted and never owned up to it in my mind.
3. Late skill updates. The original goal for skill updates was once a month in the old days. They came up late a couple times and decided every 2 months would be the goal, FINE. However, Anet then took FIVE months to do a skill balance. And to my mind, that update did very little to address profession balance problems. The problems it did address (like SF) should have been dealt with MUCH sooner and shouldn't have been buffed in the first place.
4. Now, considering the above where their updates are late and lacking, Anet has a lot of nerve in my mind to roll out these neat looking costumes and charging a ridiculous rate for them. I don't mind paying for content, especially when I feel that the company has treated its' customers well. But it seems to me that at the very least these costumes were rolled out at a very bad time.
5. GW2 game mechanics info. The least of my peeves but the one Anet can remedy most easily. Martin said that the game mechanics info would be comming out "early 2010." Well, it IS still Q1 2010, but in 4 days it will be Q2. People will squabble over what "early" actually means, but I think it's quite clear that Q2 does not fall clearly in that category. But then again, looking at the above, having their timescale off and putting it down to the last day is kinda how Anet rolls.
I tried to make it as coherent as possible without it breaking into a trollfest. Sorry if it appears that way.

Not a trollfest at all shoyon456, just facts.
In my personal opinion, Anet is intentionally trying to drive away what very little players remain in GW1 in order to minimize their flow of responsibility to their community. It's of no surprise to me actually. We're not paying rent, so they're not bringing quality updates. Time is money, and since Guild Wars is a buy-once model, they pretty much can care less. Guild Wars has sub-low priority next to their other games, which DO charge monthlies (i.e.: Aion, City of Heroes/Villains, etc.). Money supports "live teams", so that means we get the short end of the stick (period).

The game is old so all the new discoveries and insights into the game have been discussed over and over. This makes the discussion not about the nuances of the game and exchanging of information, but more so about ideological positions like how the game should be played or the object of the the game or what is/is not content or playing the game. These issues are subjective and merely a matter of opinion so the tone of these types of discussions can quickly degenerate to rudeness since there is really no empirical method of proving who is right or wrong. Then you have people who are just frustrated because they are bad.

People need to realize they're not made out of glass. If meeting in real life wasn't a direct contact, people would be just as unfriendly.
And if everyone were to think before they posted something, forums would be a far better place aswell.
But it's mainly the fact that you have an unpersonal environment, which is obviously going to create seemingly "unfriendly" atmosphere, but I doubt anyone on these, or most other forums, genuinly like to hurt others.
If you're an idiot, you deserve to be flamed so you understand you're an idiot. Words don't kill, and if they "hurt" you, the problem lies with you, and not the person flaming.

First, let me address this bizarre idea that keeps coming around that we want "free stuff" just because we have issues. With the four games and a couple of character slots, I did spend over $200 on the game over the course of its lifespan for "free stuff". It really irks me when people talk about "free" in a game that you had to BUY. This isn't a free MMO. Anet is still marketing this game and trying to get people to buy it and make money off of "free stuff".
Additionally, some of us who don't like the way the game is right now would like Anet to listen and change it for the better. This mentality of "If you don't like it then go play elsewhere" is completely absurd. There was a nearly year-long crusade to get Anet to nerf a particular skill; I guess those people should have just taken their business elsewhere and shut up. This was actually demonstrated in this thread where Cuilan made a decent point and was promptly told to go play another game instead of trying to get Anet to change the policies that he thinks are punishing people for playing for fun. The mentality should be "If you don't like it, try and get it changed, and if that doesn't work, THEN leave." People seem to be missing that first step.
Now for the actual topic: one problem is that it's just impossible to please everyone. Secondly, there's a faction that does not have any constructive criticism or intelligent opinions at all and just complains. Third, there's another faction that takes any(And believe me, I do mean ANY) criticism of Anet or a problem about the game as whining, no matter if they had good points or not. Like someone complaining about the blatantly overpowered Seeping Wound (before it was nerfed soon after) being labeled a "Shadow Form whiner".
Another is that people are getting frustrated with the way Anet has basically plummeted in terms of community interaction since Eye of the North came out. Pre-EotN, I felt Anet did a better job than nearly any other game company in listening to and communicating/interacting with their player base. Sure, there were things I think they got wrong, but they generally did pretty well, especially in communication(Gaile Gray was an excellent CM). After that and the announcement of GW2, it seems like we got very little out of them on either front. Saturday was GW2's 3rd year anniversary of being announced. Think about how little information we got about it until quite recently, but how it was used an excuse for SO many problems.
tl;dr: People should stop projecting their own perceptions of what a person they disagree with is onto the actual people they're talking to talk to and stop shoving words into their mouths.
