Is anyone willing to let me piggy-back this? I've done it will all of my characters, not thinking that my brother's account might not be able to do it. Sure enough, only 2 of his 9 can do it, and I'm not really sure I want to play everything through for him.

Try guild members, that's how did my last char (forgot that he didn't have the prerequisites and did my other account's char earlier 
). Make sure you watch 'all' conversations, starting with the one that starts with "Somehow I knew I'd find you in here, Gwen."

That's because as I said, you need to watch all dialogues for him to talk to you. If you piggyback just some of the dialogues or just go outside with someone who has spawned him, you cannot interact with him. You need to watch all 6 dialogues.

got the quest. My char didn't the wintersday quest, so o need for it. I didn't finish Prophecies either. I finished EOTN.
And maybe this sounds crazy, but when I went to HoM with heroes , Thackeray didn't appear, but when I went alone (no heroes , henchs or players) he appeared.

I'm thinking that there is more to come from this whole Thackery/Gwen thing. I wouldn't be surprised at all if more stuff gets added as the month goes by, leading up to something on the 5th year anniversary. (they did talk about the anniversary of the searing, after all)

HA! I was right...either complete eye or wintersday quests 
though---I think that the next thing is going to be the garden where thacky is going to try and take gwen to....and since I dont think his picnic is working (the dialog after you give him all of what he asks for)...that will be where we are headed next---it is his 'back-up plan' and I hope that everyone will be able to do it without having to have had all the items for his picnic since not everyone saved up apple cider (or want to buy it off others from exorbitant prices since its not available any other way than thanksgiving drops).
I still have a few more characters working on the candles, so I hope they keep this up for a few more days (doing hunters pride, which requires blood washes blood....which requires me to get my mule characters to sifhalla and do curse of the nornbear...)

I think Gwen and Cyn need to fight it out for the title of the Biggest Bitch award. I despise both characters.
I had no problem getting Thackery to come in my Rit's HoM and she has not completed EotN, but she has completed all the of Ebon Vanguard quests and has that tapestry posted.

It was posted somewhere by Regina that the only ways to obtain this miniquest on your own is to either beaten the wintersday quests or completed eotn. However you can also piggyback another person and must watch all six dialogues.

So if you give him the 4 items for the Paper Wrapped Parcel, will you get more parcels for other items rather then a Sack of Random Junk?
Also, I don't understand why Hard Apple Cider is one of the items he asks for since it's only available for 2 1/2 days once a year as a random drop. The only people who would have the cider are people who rarely play and managed to play during that holiday weekend and got a drop and didn't dump the cider (as it's still in their storage since they rarely play), or people who farmed during that weekend and are keeping it for a drunkard title. For the rest of us: Too bad!

I wonder if this is a one time dealio or if it'll change in the future? Since speculation has it Gwen and Thackeray get busy and have kin, might it reason that he does not give up after one picnic. Maybe collecting some of the harder stuff, to *cough* take advantage of the situation *cough*.

There's a chance of getting all those, and more. Plus a chance of complete junk.
But, to me, the point of doing it is to advance the story. The reward is just something extra. The effort is justified to get your character ready for whatever is going to follow, because I don't think the quest chain is going to end with the scavenger hunt.

Given the somewhat throw-away nature of many of the items that the presents give I am thinking that the actual unwrapped present may have a use itself at some later point.
Birthday time is approaching and what better way to celebrate than with the giving of a gift? Or do we all all think that it is better to receive?
