That Guy Was Really Rude- Player Etiquette- Express Yourself
galbat0rixx
Well here we go, let's talk about the general level of politeness and good etiquette in Guild Wars.
I have to say that, in general, most players are very polite and friendly, compared to most other MMO's, we have a great player base. However, there are some exceptions.
For example, when I'm buying or selling things in Kamadan, I get the occasional idiot who is blatantly only PMing me in order to hack me off. This mostly happens when I'm selling. For example, if I am selling something which is rare, about one in 20 people will just have a fat go at me and start "lol"ing because they can't understand why something with the same stats is worth more. I generally can keep my temper in situations such as these, but it's not easy.
Anecdote Alert! (Sort Of)- the other day I was selling a pair of wintergreen daggers for my mate, and I had a fairly good offer of 30 ecto. I decided to keep selling for another 20 mins to see what more I could get. What followed was 4 consecutive time-wasters. All of them in awkward districts, all of them asking "Show Plz", and being the good-natured person that I am, I obliged to go to their district and show them. Basically it ended up with them insisting they were useless pieces of crap and I'd be lucky to get 5k for them. I'm fine with explaining to people why they are valuable but if they just ignore you and carry on whisper spamming you, it gets a little indecent.
Another thing that annoys me is people who ask for a price, or ask for you to show, then when you respond or show the item, they simply blank you, no "nty" or "not for me thanks", just silence. It doesn't really make me angry, just seems a little insulting and disrespectful.
So really this thread is just a general whinging thread for you to post and talk about rude people you've met in game, or what rudeness annoys you. Let us wallow in each others miseries!

Well most of the time I agree people are friendly, at least thats my experience of it
But theres been once or twice someone was being rude.
Now Im no pvp player, never was. So admittedly when I do try Im not all that good at it. Seeing as RA supposedly is the most begginner friendly (except maybe from AB which I actually do now and then with the guild) that was my choice of pvp. But in the end I was really put off from trying anymore pvp, because what I got was rude responses and alot of blame, even though it was not all my fault. And the "go back to pve" and "pve noob" was completely unneccesary.

Oh this reminds me of one time when I was helping recruit new members for my guild. I would whisper people with no guild, "Hello do you have a second to talk?". If they responded yes then I would ask them if they wanted to join my guild. Well after asking one guy if he had some time to talk and seeing if he wanted to join he told me, "F-off, I dont have time for X#*($@& like you, I have lead top guilds" etc etc. Before I could even respond he put me on ignore. Either way I was not trying to annoy people and I was in total polite mode, but he pretty much killed it for me >:I Got him back though

I would say the worst experience i ever had was when i was just haning out in LA chatting with some people when some one PMd me
Rude guy-"Hey derv run me to ToA"
Me- "Sorry im not up to it right now"
Rude guy-"f***ing noob, cant even run to ToA, What kind of derv are you"
Me-"I CAN make the run but choose not to."
Me-"why dont you fight your way if your so leet"
Rude Guy-"seriously douchbag, 2k lets go"
Me-"LoL. welcom to the ignore list"
Other than that my experience with this game has been great!

Not saying OP is one, but the puritan retards who run around reporting everything they see just because they wanna polish their little inner cross or whatever are equally bad.
There are idiots all over the internet, people who can't ignore them are equally retarded.

I can't think of any real rudeness from players in 5 years of playing. Of course when I played a monk in the early days with PUGs, I got all kinds of evil remarks thrown at me; but that goes with the territory. Nor in the other online mmo that I have played.

This is incredible...I made a thread like this, only about [email protected] that bring bad builds on purpose to RA...I got called stupid,whiny,etc...and the thread was closed...
Anyways,to be honest, and 100% honest, ive met about 3 "rude" people on 4 years of GW. About 50 rude people on Guru in 1 year being here... |
OT: More often then not, a foreign player will abuse you in Kamadan over something being sold or bought.

Rude: When guild recruiters don't even say hello and send an invite for me to join some guild.
I've been guildless for over two years now and, to be honest, have done more anti-guild than actually being in one. The only thing I can say I've done with the help of a guild is reach my R7 status in the Kurzick title. What I consider rude is when a guild recruiter doesn't even bother to say hello and/or make some kind of statement to you and expect you to join his/her guild because they sent an invite.
If you can't say hello, you must not give a GO RED ENGINE.

I know what you mean about wintergreen weapons. I've bought a few off guru, but normally check Kamadan first. Inevitably, I get people trying to sell me the worthless peppermint-style candycane weapons.

Can't believe Anet is still letting crybabies and self-righteous retards keep their little /report tool. Seriously, has ANYONE EVER reported someone for actually leeching or having an offensive name? No, someone loading late in RA or having to answer his phone is NOT leeching.
I find it somewhat ironic that people who sync RA can ask the poor sod ending up on their team to leave and if he doesn't comply he's reported for leeching. Dishonor pts eh?

I use to be guildless, and I really enjoyed it. However I RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing hated the fact that wherever I went I got pm's from random people asking if I waned to join their guild. And I'm not just saying once every two weeks, I'm talking about every time I ever loaded into ToA or GToB (Euro/American districts), for about 2 months straight.

Even if I ever do change my mind and decide to start looking for an actual guild, I'm sure as hell not just going to say yes to some random invite. :\

I love GW and have had mainly good experiences with the people playing it but, when it comes to pvp there are alot of people who trash talk you whether its cuz of your profession or the skills you have...what gets really annoying is when you have a PvX build that has the highest rating in pvp and people slam you cuz you die...well, im sorry, my build is meant for a team and is not self sustaining...genius assholes
Quail Stomp
In pvp whenever i get someone talking trash to me i take it that i must be doing good if i piss them off that much. I used to talk junk back to them but i find that you can piss them off more by just playing the game and stomping their butt.

It seems like most of my experience with rude people is while trading. Just a few smallish peeves of mine while trading:
- People who ignore offers (a simple "nty" is a reasonable response minimally)
- People who won't give you an asking price and then act insulted at your initial offer. (if you refuse to throw out the first number, don't be shocked it what might come your way. A simple counter-offer is a reasonable response).
- People who always want you to knock 500g off your asking price (it's such a minor amount...)
- People who want your to show them stuff you clearly described already and can be seen on wiki. Yes, it's rude.
- People who say, "I'll buy" and then put a lower amount in the trade window (or worst case a bunch of items). I'm always receptive to a different offer but don't tell me "I'll buy" when you aren't giving me my asking price.
- People who put "serious offers only" or "no noob offers" in the trade window. I think a better way to do this is to post something like 100k+xx ecto or like. Obviously if the person has no idea what the thing is worth they aren't going to even be able to recognize that their offer is "not serious".
- People who try trading with full parties. Not so much rude, but just a pain when I can just do a simple add to party and then double click their name to find them. Minimally give me a description "I'm standing on the bridge", "I'm the Golem", etc...
- People who beg for the sale. Seriously, I'm one of the more generous people in the game and rarely ever sell anything for true market value. If you can't afford it from me, you can't afford it period...

The thing's that get me the most is either the ignores (If I was to throw out stupid offers I could understand, but I always offer a fair trade), or the people who absolutely insist on knocking the price down, even if it's like 100g off the price of some tome or stupid green item; just so they feel good like they have somehow gotten such a better deal.
A close 3rd would have to be the people who try to unload useless stuff like purples etc., but those people tend to be newer players or people who are seriously poor in the game and I'm more willing to help them out by just dropping prices instead of taking their merch food.
Another thing that has seriously turned me off to trading is the eagerness at which people are willing to take advantage of each other.
Example:
I recently came back to the game from a hiatus and found 15 Red Rock's in storage. I tried to find a price guide on here but couldn't find an accurate market value on them so I just posted em at 1k per (what they were selling for last time I played). I got 4 buyers immediately and sold them to one guy. One of the others that didnt get them pm's me after I told him they were sold and says "haha u coulda sold em for 3k each moron". I mean c'mon. I wasn't mad at the sell price, there was no way for me to know current market value, no one else was selling in Kamadan at the time. But I get insulted by a guy who was wanting to rip me off.

What Voodoo Rage said!
And on a personal note, I enjoy trading and have met a lot of great people at it, but it seems that many of the people that are starting to trade recently have absolutely no etiquette. I don't think it was this bad last year; i'd be curious if anyone else has made this observation as well.
Another thing, is it really appropriate to say "offer" constantly?
90% of the time i'm selling something I will give them my price, or at the very least give them a current offer and i never "lol" or "nvm" or "bb" the buyer or seller, no matter how ridiculous their price is. I just think it's rude. I feel that the seller should say their price; I dont see much reasoning behind the "offer" mentality, other than the fact that the seller is too scared to name their sell price, hoping that the buyer will offer more.
I see everyone as a potential customer/friend until they otherwise give me a reason not to. Apparently others don't view their clientele the same way. At the very least, don't "lol" someone for making an offer on your item. After all, it was you who asked them to offer in the first place. I just don't see how being rude can generate a possible sale. Apparently, it must work for some of the lower-end sellers.
Oh by the way for the people that say "serious offers only," I'll pay 1k for a Mini Kanaxai and I'm serious about that. I seriously will pay 1k for a Mini Kanaxai, seriously.
Thank you

I find it amusing that people let pvp trash talk get to them. If you know you're good and the other dude is full of shit, there's no problem, on the other hand if you do let them get to you, you need either get better or just l2internet. People act like dicks sometimes, get over it.

Me and my friend went into AB as a 55 monk and 600 monk for lolz once XD. although we actually helped quite a bit (RoJ is fun ^^) some assassin spammed that we were leechers, though we were actually doing something. then reported us even though we'd accomplished mroe than he had. ah well ^^. also the general PvP people who argue that a skill is better than another skill because it does something completely different. Thank goodness they're in the minority in GW ;D

the most insulted i have been is when i had just started a new character (but had been playing GW for over 3 years). i noticed this player was selling a mini that i had previously missed out on and as i had the money in the bank i was gonna buy it. when it comes to trading he sees my level was 4 and decides "WTF little noobs dont deserve minipets" and "come back when your a high enough level to not buy money from websites"

We know very well that there are rude people in the game i don't see the point of making a thread about it.

The most insulted I'd ever felt:
some time ago, I met a guy in Kamadan whilst trading. We became pretty friendly, although I did sometimes feel he 'using' me some of the time for his own gain, such as getting me to look out for stuff in Kamadan etc, but I just tried to help as much as I could. Then one day, he asked me to try and do a Droks run for him. I explained that I had no experience of it and was quite busy. He then started getting all arsey about it "are you that selfish you won't even try to run me?". I then told him I actually did lots of things for him, and actually he nearly never did anything for me. He then just said "wtf your such a noob, I'm way better at powertrading and everything else, your actually sh** at this game". He then put me on ignore. Half a year later he had taken me off his ignore list and I apologized to him for seeming selfish. All I got was a "np". No sorry from him. This was deeply disspointing and I have kept well away from him since.
Luckily, I've met far more good people than bad people in GW, I can't say for sure but the lack of a high level cap seems to help with that, as people have less reasons to call you a noob.

The majority of the GW community was one of the best I'd ever encountered for the first year or so.
Past that it's the worst MMO I've ever played for abuse, rudeness, whispering rage, chat spam, hating, PuG raging, rage quits, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.
If it wasn't for the tools provided to easily block/ignore such issues, allowing me to eliminate the majority from the minority, I would have ditched this game shortly after the release of Factions.
There has always been an amazingly wicked core of friendly, mature, and helpful players here.I've met some exceptionally awesome people through this game that have become great friends outside of the game.
The difference for me is that in other MMO's I've played the majority is far more civil and chat or contact filtering is seldom, if ever, used.
Subscription vs Non-subscription seems to be a blatantly familiar trend in this regard.
Of course my experience is purely subjective.
You don't, others do.That's what forums are all about no?

actually a lot of these responses are pretty rude. Yes, the people that make u mad are in the wrong, but calling them stupid or idiots idk. The truth is there's a lot of little kids <18 that play gw and if you've ever gone thru high school the fact is these kids are just ignorant and will act in ways that they think are cool. There are some people that are older, and these are the type that devote their whole lives to gw, that love to rage because to them it feels like their whole little world crashes when they "lose/die" whatever. You end up running into these people most in pvp and high end sc's, there have been a lot of runs I go on where I just turn team chat off or put someone on insta-ignore when I don't want to read tantrums.
I could add quite a few ign but I know it isn't allowed.

The funniest rage I ever had was back in the old uwsc days, and one of the pugs (I think it was an all pug team) died very quick. After he died he picked my name so he could watch what I was doing. He started making fun of my armor and weapon sets because he said they were too popular. Anyways, I did my area, eventually we tele rezzed and let him try his area. Idk, if he didnt know what his task was or not, but he was basically just farming i.e. he wasnt killing the correct mobs in pits for the preparation of the quest. So, I joined him in the killing and ended up finishing his area while he farmed. Almost exactly as I finished it- all quests complete etc. an ecto dropped for him and he died. He continued to rage on me demanding I rez him (he knew I had scrolls from earlier) I just put him on ignore till he left and grabbed his ecto. It was only one ecto but it felt so sweet picking it up after all the events ;P

I know it's a lil off topic but I do get annoyed with people sterotyping us youths.

The difference for me is that in other MMO's I've played the majority is far more civil and chat or contact filtering is seldom, if ever, used. Subscription vs Non-subscription seems to be a blatantly familiar trend in this regard. |

Internet etiquette or lack there off goes with the territory. You will find the occasional elitist morons but I guarantee you a majority of them are either young kids or socially inept adults.
Sure you find douchebags everyone once in a while but that is life, don't even waste the time, its not worth it.

Now this is a little off-topic but I think it's very wrong to stereotype <18's like this. I am under 18 (not by much but still under 18), and I think I generally am one of the polite people in Guild Wars. I get just as much trouble from adults as kids, for example when I gave someone 500g and he wanted another 500g (this was during my early GW days) and he then went on to whisper-spam me until I put him on ignore, mostly saying stuff like "your such an idiot, come back on this game when your balls have dropped", which is very unnecessary from a 30 year old man.

This I would have to agree with. I have had guild/clanmates and friends from outside of our group that were young and well behaved. Some of the worst behavior I have seen actually came from "adults" that were just plain mentally deficient or cretinous toward others when behind the safety of a keyboard. On the other hand some of the best behaved people I have met were young. One such individual we thought might be a teenager until he joined voice chat and it turned out he was 12 or 13(don't recall which).
I'm glad to say that I have had mostly good experiences from the GW community in-game and have been playing for a little over 4 years. Naturally, there are bad eggs. But when compared to other games I have played online GW has one of the better communities. I would say DDO(Dungeons and Dragons Online) also has a good community so at least GW has company in the best online game communities department.
There is one situation that I recall that would fit this thread. It's from over 3 years ago though. I think the quest was in stingray strand. It had something to do with opening a container(chest I think) and collecting an item from it. There just happened to be other people looking to do that same quest so I joined. One of the people got the thing opened but then everyone wiped and we had to fight our way back to it. By the time we got back to it the items no longer had names tagged to them. Everyone got one except me. When I messaged the person who picked up two he laughed at me and I got agitated and warned the others of what he did so that they knew to put him on their ignore lists. One person out of the group decided to stay and help me do the quest a second time. I wish I remembered the helpful guys character name.

Most other things I wound up laughing at the people doing it for one reason or another.
When the "droks runner" con-artists were getting kind of bad a few clan-mates and I posed as people looking for runs to find one of them and then take "evidence" of him doing it and used it to blackmail him into doing nothing while constantly harassing him. That one ended when one of us(not saying who) messaged him claiming to be a GM and told him that his account was banned for "such and such". the moron believed it and never logged on again. One person scheming others taken out of the bracket with the potential of support never having to deal with any of it and able to use the time saved to take care of other matters(and us having a bit of mischievous fun in the process). We figured the people doing it are idiots anyways so they likely wouldn't realize we could get in trouble for doing that to them and if the whole thing got to support they would probably laugh at what we did and just ban him anyways. It's not much of a thing we did since we just hit one of them but hey...it's better than nothing.

There is the whole HA rank discrimination thing. I liked going to HA back in the day but the players that have taken over there now are...well....lets just say I'm content to just point and laugh at them when they complain about having to wait in the hall of heroes for an hour or so for a new opponent. They brought it on themselves. I wouldn't be surprised at this point if that situation doesn't even change when it's HA day for the zaishen challenges.

Ah, and last but not least Zen Daijun HM. There was one point a while back when it was the zaishen mission and I decided to join a group to do it rather than hench/hero it. The first group wiped out(which didn't bother me of course since it happens) and then the group dispersed. I then tossed out a few more group requests for a bit and another accepted. The group leader asked me to ping my build so I did. He then proceeded to laugh at me and boot me from the group. After this I decided to go ahead and hench/hero it. It's kind of funny because after I beat it I got the odd urge to look and see how many people were still at the mission forming up groups. Guess who was still there looking for people.

And on a personal note, I enjoy trading and have met a lot of great people at it, but it seems that many of the people that are starting to trade recently have absolutely no etiquette. I don't think it was this bad last year; i'd be curious if anyone else has made this observation as well. AC |
It seems to me that everyone could use a funny thing to lighten the mood in this thread(but somewhat still fitting to it). It has to do with stupid people in PvP. I'm not talking the sort of thing that some PvX jockey(a.k.a. wiki noob) would call stupid either(in other words this is something that everyone should be able to get a laugh out of). The last time I went into AB I took a lvl 5 flamingo pet with me as a Mesmer/Ranger. This was just for laughs really. The rest of my build outside of the pet stuff was decent enough for me to fight and stand my own. The silly idea to bring a flamingo with me actually turned into an interesting strategy that has to do with luring. It would seem that when people see a lvl 5 flamingo in AB they can't resist chasing after it. Long story short for the second half of the match there was often 3 or more people chasing after that poor bird from one side of the map to the other rather than killing players and capping shrines. I wonder if anyone in that team noticed and got mad at them for that. I bet none of you guys knew you could lure in PvP(I sure as hell didn't).

Another thing, is it really appropriate to say "offer" constantly? |
Someone was selling "WTS Q6 AR14 Sharktooth Shield". I really had absolutely no clue what the value of this shield was but I was very interested in it. I tried initiating conversation with him and he would absolutely not discuss any price what-so-ever, just kept repeatedly replying "offer" "offer" "offer".... I searched for it on Guru and couldn't find it. Finally I offered him 25k and he replies "bb noob".
