This been making me and many other ppl wonder for alot of time,
Do they drop?
Where they drop?
How rare theyre?
There hasnt been really big facts about r7 Still dropping, but r8 canthan/tyrian items atleast do still drop.
There is Many ppl saying they dont drop, some saying they do,
Ive allways rly though they didnt, but recently few months ago, many things been making me wonder, so i tho id ask peoples own options, maybe stories or what soever about getting max r7 or r8 drops from canthan/tyria recently..
Things which made me wonder example is getting dropped r6 11energy Jug at cantha, as well as r8 12energy offhand.
And also alot of discussion with ppl i know about the thing..
MY theory about this is:
Max r7 Could still drop, and r8 would become way more common now,
If ppl would farm places ppl did in 2005-2006, Back then there was no hardmode and easy farmplaces from eotn and nf, So ppl were Forced to farm in Normalmode, and cantha/tyria, Where all nice drops did drop..
Thinking about places which did drop Alot r8 and r7 items, such as Vermins in Cantha, the place is dead now, when in 2006 Thousands ppl farmed em, and same for jadebrotherhood and few other locations there such as am fah and plagueborn foes and kappas..
So, I think if now, 4 years later, Thousands ppl would farm Example Vermins, in Normal mode for week orso, many r8 would pop, and possibly even one or two r7's.
Ive heard many ppl saying theyve had like r7 Celestial shield dropping recently, (some random ppl), but there never been any proof about it,
But it sure makes me wonder where all those crap single mod r7 shields & offhands are coming?
As for little amounth of time there was none in market, then suddenly again many and so on.
Also i think the reason noneone is playing normal mode also is the reason r8's hardly around, Thinking about Post nerfed staffs, with r8, For sure rarest type of r8 weapon, there is maybe, Dozen around..
Why? Because Shortly after those were added, Nf was added so ppl did play that, and after that Hardmode came. :P

Also, In my 5years of guildwars, ive only Farmed in Cantha & Tyria and ive had ONE Gold max r8 drop (was like 4months ago), Thinking of that droprate for those even is real low, So for r7 it would be Ridicilously low if they would drop..

For example, i farm Dragon Moss on my Ele, i get Kurz faction, Echo/Gothic Def./Ornate/Gothic Dual etc. chance, and its only 3~mins a run, usually less.

Im also still waiting for my Q8 DF Bo Staff to drop, a Sickened Guard promised it to me in return for me giving him and his friends so much attention...

What an incredible amount of misconceptions and misinformation in this thread. I don't want this forum to overflow with strange theories and superstitions so I think it's time to bust some myths, again. Soon I'll be posting a large post explaining how GW dropsystem works but now I'll just say that Max Q7s definately cannot drop anymore anywhere and Max Q8s in Tyria/Cantha can still drop but only those which can drop insc.
I'm sure as hell you didn't see a white max q7 shield drop anywhere past 2006. The fact it was white doesn't magically rise any of it's stats compared to possible blue/purple/gold drops.
You won't get one as it's not a possible drop anymore.
Thats a common misconception. Elite Missions have been always the WORST source for low req items as all what matters is level of dropsource. This doesn't include whites and blues, which in fact require a higher level of dropsource to drop with max stats but even for the highest dropsource level they don't reach maximum item_level which makes is possible for them to drop with low req. The best sources for low req items were always farms of low level mobs like the beforementioned Vermins.

^ My guess would be that when something drops, stuff like req, colour/rarity, stats/mods etc would all be generated randomly using an algorithm. From what I've read from people talking with Anet staff is that the chance this algorithm would generate an R7 drop would have been astronomically low. That could mean that Anet changed the algorithm to omit R7's altogether or it could be that with the introduction of new weapons and mods with each campaign, the chance of a low req drop is reduced even further to the point where it does become impossible to obtain.

It's not about reducing to extremelly low chances but simply about disabling the possibility of such a drop.
Before Nightfall max req.8 weapons of all kinds weren't anything special, they were just the normal drops purposedly ENABLED for level 24+ drops. Despite what many think, Req.8 was exactly as common as for example Req.11 then, just like Req.9 isn't any more rare than for example Req.11 now.
Anet designers didn't sit there and fill the table of possibe ranges of drop stats for all levels, they just have set the caps at top level and let the system interpolate all the values between the top and the bottom, throughout all the levels. The fact that items with max stats requirements lower by 1 than minimum allowed were possible happened exactly because of that interpolation. It was just a marginal chance that happened under specific circumstances (specific item_level), not because there was an entry in a droptable saying "Shield;Req=7;Armor=16;Rate=0.001%"
In my opinion based on FACTS, the marginal drops like max req7 (before nerf) or max req8 after are a feature UNINTENDED by the devs.
All the devs did in regards to this is just set a requirements range that's allowed for items supposed to be max (item_level=24 plus whatever the modifier for purples/golds is). They didn't consider the fact that max stats can appear below that item_level, when a lower req is also possible by interpolation.
When Nightfall released all they did is just bumping the lowest allowed req for max items from 8 to 9. This change was worldwide, affecting Tyria/Cantha just aswell as the newly added inscription lands. K just from my experience which is pretty extensive in farming for this stuff...
Chests do not drop R8 max damage. If you get one, SS it or I will not believe you. I ran thousands of FoW chests for years. In late 07 early 08 r8's stopped dropping alltogether.
I also farmed quite agressively for many years. Up until about a few months into NF, I was getting max gold R8 weapons and shields on a regular basis. Anywhere from 1 or 2 to 5 or 6 over the period of say 3 or 4 hours of solid farming. This is exclusive to high level areas in Factions and Prophecies....
I haven't really farmed like that for a long time but taking into consideration the loot scaling and enemy group composition, solo farming with any speed has simply become a thing of the past.
If you want to get a good idea though, get 8 people and go NM to trolls outside droks. MS Sand Storm the trolls down over and over and over all day with a full team. I bet you'd get some r8 drops. I don't know if r7's drop at all anymore max. WAsn't that something anet openly nerfed?

- None of the r8 drops from chests were gold. Not sure if they can drop gold.

Well this was posted on the "nice drop I got today" thread, "While hunting giants for the jaws for Nicky I saw a real ordinary chest (nm). Since Im a chest addict I have to open it, even when they dont count for treasure hunter and usually give merch stuff. But here I got gold max req8 oldschool shield with 2 nice mods, near perfect" and heres a screenie he posted l8.

Ofcourse chests CAN drop max req.8s just aswell as monsters can, all that matters is the LEVEL of the chest. High-end chests (that count for title) are level 24 (except HM Ascalon/Shing Jea/Istan which are lvl 22 or something close) and level 24 dropsources cannot drop a purple/gold req.8 at all (except occassional purple staff thats way off max).
If you love extreme hardcore chestrunning, there's a run that theoretically can drop Q8 Echovald Shield and Gothic Defenders and a few more rarities! NM, start from Maatu Keep and run south, most of the time there's a Canthan Chest (level 20) or even two chests around mobs from echovald forest. That chest CAN drop the hotsauce skins AND it can drop req.8s with a pretty good rate. The problem is very small rate for golds (1:6) and tons of nonmax drops, but that is to be expected from anything that can drop Q8s. Worst thing is probably that those chests have very small chance to drop any shield at all - I have ran 116 of them recording drops, got 2 max purple req.8 foci, gold nonmax q8 sword, 4 shields total, 1 purple echovald (q10 singlemod) 1 gold q12 dualmod crap shield. Mods, materials and runes (1 sup vigor) got my lockpick value back.

Ive had a few Q7 Shields, Swords and Axes drop post 2006, had a Q7 Foehammer drop too. Q8 stuff is NOT, i repeat NOT, the rarest thing to come across, you just have to find level 18 to 20 (I forget which) enemies, in NM. Those enemies have the most reported drop rate for Q8 and even 7. Like said, Canthan Chests out of Mattu Keep have a nice chance of Q8, but its still bad at that. I found Forbidden Chests ( Back when it was all the range to run these ) had an EXTRAORDINARY chance of Q8, as i recall having multiple Q8 Golden Phoenix Blades, including one of the seemingly rare now +5 ones.

No idea if r7 Max still drop, though who knows maybe they do. Oh I also got a r8 embrossed aegis from an enemy in mt quinkai so r8 max still drop.

Yeah i did get Max r8 Offhand in Hardmode Chesting at Nahpui quarter.
Its only Gold max r8 ive ever got, and ive ran ~ 11000 Chests, And like 10000 from em at HM cantha..

Me, Carnage and Xunlai found a pretty nifty farming spot for possible Q8 and proberly the best chance of Q7.
If you come out of ToA and go towards Talmark Wilderness, but go left when you come to it, there are like 20-30 lvl17 Bog Skale Blighters. And if you carry on, you can kill the forest mino's to, there level19. If a few people could do this and record any max drops they get, it would be awsome. Im fairly certain that if any Q7 drops, itll drop somewhere like here.
Takes about 5mins a run, in NM ofc, and can be done on anything with a fast spike

ive got over 19k chests opened and back when factions first came out, its was really easy to get R8 max from chests. but then it got nerfed and i havent seen a r8 max in over 14k chests

Just leave ToA and run towards Talkmalk Wilderness, take a left to a heap of Bog Skales, kill all these, THEY CAN DROP Q7, and Q8, very rare max though. Head towards Kessex Peak, avoiding everything after the Bog Skales. Ball up the minos and spike. I usually ball up like 2 groups of 15. After that just keep rezoneing in Kessex Peak and kill big groups of minos (Leave small groups you couldnt aggro as it will be a waste of time) I currently average around 3mins a rezone. Put some pictures up of what ive got and maps fyi

I have said in the past and I will say it again the best place I have found to chest run for q8's and q7's is the reed bog. The q8's are somewhat common and the q7's come every once in a great while although both are generally purple and crap mods. I am sure if more than one person was doing it better results could be gathered. This is in normal mode btw.

I just remembered another spot that had an unusually high drop rate of max perfect q8's that I have farmed. The Ravagers in the bloodstone fen mission bonus area. I always did it in normal mode. I remember it was in pursuit of their ecto rates and it was something stupid like 150 or so runs to 1 ecto lol. I did get a lot of good q8 tyrian weapons though.

I'm a pretty oldschool player and spend many years on GW; and yes, I've had loads of r8's drop for me during those years (not a single r7 though). By far most were in NM prophecies and cantha a fair while ago. This is probably the result of lootscalling and the update altering the droprates of low-req weapons. Besides these mechanical reasons theres also the fact that since HM came out thats pretty much what I play in PvE, also when farming. Altough I must say I did have a bunch of r8 max inscribables drop for me in HM Nightfall; mostly deadswords and ancient shields and the occasional divine symbol.
Btw Spun Ducky, could you maybe tell me how that farm is done/give me a quick 'how-to-do' IG? Im also trying Kairi's farm.. Would be fun to get to the bottom of this.

In the past few hours, I got a max (16) white r8 Tactics "Crude Shield" from Carnak The Hungry, one of the new WiK bosses in The Black Curtain. This was in hard mode.
I thought of this thread and took a screenshot before picking it up. Here are the important bits from the shot, cropped into a smaller file. (I didn't think it was worth uploading and posting the entire 1680x1050 full screenshot. If this isn't sufficient "screenshot or it didn't happen!" proof, I guess I can post the full one if folks feel it's really necessary.)
As to the topic, that's far from the first junky max r8 item I've had drop over the years. The only time I ever remember getting a max r7 drop was sometime in early/mid 2006. I was doing Ring of Fire on my Mesmer (before there was such a thing as HM.) One of the foes at that ether tower right after you walk through the lava pit dropped a gold, +12 energy r7 Frost Artifact. I can't remember if it was single mod or dual crappy mods, but it wasn't especially interesting other than the r7. If memory serves, I kept it for a couple years for the "ooo r7!" effect and wound up giving it to Stuey because I needed the room to hold something important ... like stone summit badges or a barbed axe haft. I've never had another max r7 item drop that I noticed, and I think I would've noticed if I got even a white one.
