Order Of The Etherbloom Crown [ZEN]

OPEN!

The Grand Goal of this Workshop is to allow new artists to jump out of the shadows, to learn to give and receive Contructive Criticism,
to enhance the Community Feeling by making a collaborated effort to get a Guru Member amongst the Winners,
and most of all; have a great deal of FUN in the process.

This thread is not going to be focused on winning the Halloween Contest alone.
The Halloween Contest is our superficial carrot, something people will strive for if the goal of progress and growth isn't enough at first.
The most significant purpose of this thread will be to see people make an effort, and to see them grow by doing so.
The Guru Halloween Contest Prizes will aid this cause.

The Deadline for submissions is 22/10/2010.

There will be 3 stages to this Workshop:
- We all strive to create a Guild Wars Halloween masterpiece of our own, and help others create theirs. - Final feedback given, those who wish to do so will enter the official contest before the deadline has expired. - We hand out Guru prizes independent of the official results, chat a bit and discuss whether we wish to have a Wintersday Workshop as well.

These prizes will be based on donations from everyone who wants to and are able to aid the cause.
Any donation is accepted, from Red Iris Flowers to Ectoplasm.
A panel of judges will be set up eventually, but some Awards will be based on polls too, to include popular opinion.

Artbook - [The Art Of Guild Wars 2 signed by the entire dev team], a hand-made Seer plushie, and a 8"x10" signed art print. (donator(s): Tzu, KiyaKoreena)

The Artbook award is a very special new addition to the Workshop. It is the Artbook I won with my Dwayna costume last year, untouched and pristine. In order for you to be eligible for this award you MUST be okay with providing me your address via e-mail if you win, and you can not have won a similar artbook (signed by the entire dev team) before, or this year. I will pay for the shipping, within a padded package. If you wish to compete for this, please tick the appropriate box in the submission sheet at the bottom of this post. If you compete for this and you win an artbook in this year's official contest, I will remove you from the list of competitors toward this particular reward. You will of course be eligible for every other award in the Workshop nonetheless. This prize is given to the all-round best artist of the Halloween Workshop, based on progress, critique-giving and receiving, skill and quality of final product.

Quote:
1rst Place Best Progress - [50 ecto][20 obsidian shards][Everlasting Macabre Tonic]
2nd Place Best Progress - [30 ecto][20 obsidian shards][250 Mysterious Summoning Stones]
3rd Place Best Progress - [20 ecto][10 obsidian shards][200 Mercantile Summoning Stones]

(donator(s): Tzu, KiyaKoreena)

The Best Progress Award is given to the artist(s) who have listened intently to critique, mastered the art of Personal Growth,
and made long leaps to better his/her piece regardless of whether he claimed a prize in the Official Halloween Contest or not. Quote:
~ 1rst Place Literature - [300k]
~ 2nd Place Literature - [200k]
~ 3rd Place Literature - [100k]

(donator(s): InfestedHydralisk)

The Literature Award is given to the best written piece of Guild Wars Halloween fiction. All genres are welcome. We are looking for written pieces which channel the spirit of Halloween, but in a way that is unique to the Guild Wars universe.
Quote: Most Original Art - [40 ecto][2 armbraces of truth][5 black dyes][Undedicated Necrid Horseman] (donator(s): Tzu, Darcy, Thistle Xandra)

The Most Original Art Award is given to the artist(s) who, in a positive way, stood out from the crowd, in choice of art form, subject, style and finish.
Quote: Guru Halloween Artist Extraordinaire - [50 ecto][2 armbraces of truth][Demonic Aegis Of Fortitude] (donator(s): Tzu, KiyaKoreena)

The Guru Halloween Artist Extraordinaire Award is given to the artist who meets with 3 criterias; was menioned in the Winners section OR the Honourable Mention section of the Official Halloween Contest, participated actively in this thread; both giving and receiving critique and generally being chatty, AND, finally, was a candidate for at least 1 of the other Awards (Harsh, eh? Well, believe me, there will be more than 1 candidate for this Award in the end).
Quote: Muse - [30 ecto][250 birthday cupcakes][5 white dyes] (donator(s): Tzu, Darcy)

The Muse Award is given to a person who didn't necessarily enter the thread as an artist, moreover as a supporter of the thread and the goal. He/she is a person who kept the thread alive with kind chatter, maybe donated something to the prizes, gave useful critique, provided inspiration, submitted tutorials and ideas unselfishly, and generally kept us motivated all the way.
Quote: Pure Evil - [40 ecto][5 demonic keys][50k][20 Mysterious Tonics] (donator(s): Tzu, Darcy, Thistle Xandra)

The Pure Evil Award goes to the artist with the most evil-looking and -feeling piece. Keep in mind that you still need to stick to the rules of the Official Contest and GWG, and that evil/cruel doesn't nescessarily mean "goriest".
Quote: Most Amusing - [30 ecto][250 pumpkin cookies][50k][r10 Silencing Demon Fangs of Defense][20 Mysterious Summoning Stones] (donator(s): Tzu, Darcy, KiyaKoreena, Thistle Xandra)

The Most Amusing Award goes to the artist with the funniest entry.
An entry which catches the judges' attention and makes us giggle.
Quote: Spirit of Halloween - [yet to be announced] (donator(s): Arghore)

The Spirit of Halloween Award goes to the artwork which best represents the Halloween spirit. The artwork channels that specific atmosphere and feeling, visual content and category of art is less important. PM Arghore to learn how to become a judge for this award! Quote: Gamescom Goodie Bag - [1x Guild Wars 2 T-shirt size L, 6x Guild Wars 2 tattoos, 2x postcards: Caithe and Rytlock, 1x Arenanet & NCSoft Keychain, 1x large plastic bag with Guild Wars 2 & Aion print, 1x "clapping fan" with Guild Wars 2 & Aion print] (donator(s): Aeronwen)

This prize will be given to an artist who manages to best portray the infamous Mad King Thorn. It could be humorous or menacing, above all MKT must be instantly reckognisable as exactly himself.
Given the subjectivity of the matter you are allowed to give a short explanation of your interpretation with your submission.
BONUS! JR will be handing out a red Guild Wars 2 t-shirt (PAX-style) to an artist who stands out amongst the rest. He/she will be given a choice of size M or L, and must be marked with a (willing to receive RL prizes) on the list below. Tzu will be giving out two grey t-shirts (PAX-style) in size L to two -marked artists based on a ranom number generator lottery!

more places may be made in every category if more prizes are donated,
prizes may also raise significantly in value.
more categories may also be made, based on requests.
To donate, PM me/post here first, then deliver to IGN Mary Sandford.

I'd probably not participate in writing though, as I'm working on Operative 14's Ghost Walk competition/event, and another horror writing competition that a friend is hosting elsewhere.

I'm greatly tempted to try something for this... if I do, it'll be sketched with oil pastel coloring. Maybe an image of Byleth (a worshiper of Dhuum from my fan-fiction) - he fits spooky well.

A question though: Can we put in multiple submissions (for different categories)? Because if writing does get its own category, and I get time for that and practicing my drawing again, I'd like to write a story - perhaps to go with my image.

Would also make sense, seeing how if you go for the scariest, you can't really go for the funniest. :x

Will debate whether to join or not. Answer in... sometime today.

I would donate to this, btw, but I am short on funds myself (that's what I get for filling out my HoM completely! :/)

I'll answer that question as if it was a serious one, just in case someone else is curious about the answer. I donated to every award this year so I didn't have to rely on donations to make the prizes substantial. I might even pad them further in the future. So no, you don't have to donate and this is intentional. However, all donations are, of course, still welcome. They could help take a prize from "decent" to "epic".

I agree with your reasoning, and I don't personally see a good reason why it shouldn't be allowed. However, I would like to hear from the other participants whether they would agree to it, so:

Question for everyone: Should participants of the Workshop be allowed to enter more than one submission to this contest, and should there be a cap to how many?

I updated OP with some new names and progress galleries. Here's Penguin's progress so far:

Wauw Penguin, that looks great! I love the colors especially on the scythe.
If you want to improve it, you might want to concider putting some more detail on the scythe or show some more of his body.

As to the public question, I think that everyone should be able to submit 1 piece of artwork per category. But also should be able to post every image/story etc. they've made so we can all comment and help that person choose their best piece.

Does make sense, minami, but I have a rebuttle about one comment:

Quote:
I don't think people should choose which category they want to submit their pictures to [...], every picture submitted by the artist should qualify for each category
I think people should strive for certain categories, due to two of them, scariest and funniest, being mutually exclusive (well, I at least cannot see how a scary thing can be funny or a funny thing be scary, but maybe my imagination is just limited - then again, I find next to nothing "scary" - an interesting aspect for a gothic writer :/).

As to the two-entries thing: I suggest that it is limited to one artwork medium. That is, if you do a traditional work, you can make a costume/plushie, a digital work, a written piece, etc. but no second traditional work piece. And I would agree with Minami's limit of two submissions with only one winning (unless the judges say they'd be fine with more).

Due to not many people being open to a multitude of different medium (some people good with traditional may not have access to digital, and those with access and talent in digital may not necessarily be good with traditional outside of lineart), let alone having the time to do so many pieces, I don't think that a number would be that problematic if the category limit and winning limit is put in place.

That said, I'll be doing two works (just two): A traditional piece and a writing piece. Got an idea for my traditional piece, but not sure if I wanna make that my full choice (still thinking of possibilities... mainly concerning my GW characters, as I feel that Thorn and Dhuum are/will be overdone).

@Penguin's Dhuum: That's really good and I don't know where to go with critique/criticism. However, if you're wanting to make that more Dhuum-like, I suggest altering the eyes to give them a green glow akin to his "glassy" eyes from the game
or the green-ish glow seen in the concept art.

Well, Aeronwen, on one hand you have everyone with an equal chance (theoretically) to enter multiple works intended for multiple categories - a person can, for instance, work on a funny work while also working on a scary work. Though, of course, due to personal speed in work and free time, not everyone actually has an equal chance in this.

But on the other hand, when knowing that some will enter in one work, others will enter in 2 or 3, those with 2 or 3 have more chance at winning a prize, even if for completely different categories. If a person were to win Scary and Funny with 2 different works, they'd be getting far more prizes than anyone else. Would they have earned it? Certainly, I would think (unless there is bias among the judges, which I doubt will happen given the current mood), but some people may be bitter. To limit to one win would be to give others a chance at winning.

Mind you, however, that I am not for or against people winning in multiple categories - I know I certainly would love to (I need ectos! >.< And could always use armbraces... Bloody HoM). But it's really a matter of personal views - would it be fair or unfair, and to whom?

I think so long as a single piece of art cannot win multiple categories, and so long as there is a (low) limit to how many works a person can give (I still suggest one per medium), I think it is okay.

Personally, I think the list of mediums (I'd rather not call them categories, as when I say/read categories, I think of the prize categories) needs a slight edit - there's "fan art" (that's everything), "concept art" "Illustrations" and "wallpaper" which can all be split into "digital art" and "traditional art" - then there's the "Cosplay" and "Costume Design (& Creation?)" which I consider to be the same under "Costumes." But now I'm just rambling!

Uhm, erm, *thinks of how to make a relevant post that isn't nitpicking*, oh! I currently got three thoughts going on and I'm not sure which to go with. Each idea is more of a character being focused on. I got an idea for one of them, but I don't know if it is scary enough.

The idea for the one thought out is to take Byleth
(brief description: white(ish) hair, one eye, very tanned skin, tattoos all over his chest, and a very devout follower of Dhuum) with his scythe (inspired by the Undead Scythe in its design). Basically, it's a portrait with Byleth licking the blade of the scythe (it's clean, as opposed to the cliche "lick the blood off of the blade" idea) and in turn cutting his tongue, overfilling his mouth with his own blood (so that it starts dripping down his chin) with a sinister/insane grin on it (may to out to be a joker-esque grin).

Not sure if that's scary enough though... given the right expression I suppose it could be but... :/

Konig, it's scary enough I think.

Maybe people should only be able to enter 2 mediums, 1 work each.
One entry into all possible mediums/categories would be too much. Who has the time to submit that many quality stuff anyways?
I'd love to see many different people win, even though I'd love to try for heaps of ectos.
Yeah, what?

Is it just a mis-link or is Penguin actually Esp? Because if it is, YOU'RE BLOWING MY MIND, ESP.

That's rather why I say it doesn't matter for an overall limit, but rather a limit per medium. Most people won't be able to do more than 2 or 3 mediums - maybe a fourth if they work fast, but that's highly unlikely. Most people probably wouldn't even have the talent to produce good work in multiple mediums as well.

Just saying that it feels like overkill. But it don't matter to me, as I'll just producing two works.

Name: Frusti Rita
Art Form: Pencil/Coloured Pencil
Idea: A meeting with an ancestor (A ritualist and a spirit)
Progress Gallery: None yet
Artbook Award: [x] Why not.
Official Contest: [x] Yea, why not. I just need to make myself do it when the time comes!
Workshop Awards: [x]

So, am I allowed to let others know of what I was planning to do?

I guess I am, so: I was thinking about a ritualist in the dark, on the right hand side of the screen, looking like discussing something with a spirit (one like the aggressive spirits of GW, Bloodsong etc.). I though I would draw this with coloured pencils on an A3 black paper, trying to do something bigger and in a way inverted from what I usually do (white A4 and the usual pencil).

I only have two little problem-like things I'm wondering; the colour of the spirit and whether the Ritualist would wear a bandana or a headwrap. Really can't decide between a green+orange spirit or the GW-like aqua coloured one.

I'm assuming I could use something like up to 10 hours with the drawing, if my patience keeps me going

In other news: Penguin... You make me feel kind of jealous, that really is a great piece of work! Hope to see it finished soon, it really gets me excited about this whole thing!

But one of them isn't art, but rather writing. And I'm a fast writer - I make short stories and finish them within 3 hours on average, if not less. A few times I took not even 45 minutes to write a 2 page short story that many people quite enjoyed.
