heres something I submitted in last years official contest. I was actually considering doing a new piece of work, because this was done a year ago and i have improved. but i was just wondering what you guys think. maybe i could add to it, like a background etc.

http://s937.photobucket.com/albums/a...ent=MadKng.jpg
That whole movie is nightmare fuel. That's also one of my favorite horror movie scenes as well.

You really nailed that scene though! Are you going to add that cabinet thing on the right wall? I like your pic without it. You'll never be able to un-see that scene. I think I'll just leave the cabinet out, that way I can finally start on the last minute major editing. I can't believe how fast these past few weeks flew by - the 22nd is almost here!

@Cheese: It looks good. Though I'd suggest maybe starting an entirely new piece rather than building on an older one. But then again, depending how you do it, expanding on your past piece with new material might make an interesting contrast.

Ok...this is not completely related to the halloween workshop, but I have a question to you cosplayers/outfit makers.

Whats the best way to make new clothes look dirty, and whats the best way to make fake blood? (or the best product). Think zombies. o.o

@ Chicken. Drag them along your driveway, rub with high grit sandpaper. Fray edges like the cuffs and collars, elbows/knees, and seams that tend to rub together. Mist with really strong tea or thinned out acrylic paints. For fake blood http://www.halloween-website.com/fake_blood.htm Ive heard lots of people recommend ones using Karo syrup.
True, though the high pitched buzz sound which is "the shining" in the movie is more annoying than nightmare fuel. :P

Think zombies. o.o I've heard that ink blots can do the effect well after a wash (depending on what you're outfit is, of course!). I myself have never cosplay, but I'm my mom sows a lot and makes/fixes outfits for live theater, so I know a tad bit about it.

It really depends on what materials you're using.

It was a long search but I found something suited to be placed on the wood, I reimagined it into my own liking and here's the result:

Now just to find something for the right side, I was thinking of a huge pumpkin(only the top part would be visable), but I need to find out how to make it fit the art style, because that'll be the most difficult for now :\

Nice progress everyone! Sorry I have been quiet lately, been busy.

Dutch , - looks a lot better. Although I think the branch should be bigger. I don't think trees have branches that small (Anyone, pls correct me if I am wrong ^^ ) unless it's supposed to be a plant that's hanging somewhere?

Gratz everyone on the progress.

I've been awol from here and drawing too for a little while (hence the lack of CC and responses), my grandma passed away.

Dutch, it looks better overall, but like Raven said, the branch doesn't fit.
Either it's small because it's in the distance (but then the branches wouldn't go in front of the wall), or it's the end of a tree branch (in which case it just looks wrong, because it looks like quarter of an entire tree).

Try and either erase the tree parts that are in front of the wall, or find a better branch brush to put in there, one that looks more like the end of a branch.

If it's supposed to be in front of the wall, you would see some sticks. If you want I can do a redline for you sometime later today.

I need to work on my picture too. Way behind, especially now.

Found the model for the spirit for my pic, and did a bit of line-art practise to see if the drawn version is correct. Opinions and comments welcome, I will start drawing the big one with some aqua-coloured pencils after taking a shower. How great it feels to be going forward with the progress!

Also, good progress, people! Horribly nice. I love the Effigy idea, my inner pyromani... I mean, my inner child likes that kinda stuff. Can't wait to see the final images, I'm a fan of contrast and a fire sculpture will surely have some, if you burn it in the darkness.

/edit: I actually got pretty far drawing the spirit. Progress report tomorrow, if I find the time to give you one. Going photographing with my buddies if it doesn't start raining.

@ shady tradesman - great job on the mask! It's such a nice added touch. I know it's an effigy, but it's such a shame to burn it :*( I'm still campaigning for a youtube video in addition to stills

@Konig - lol, if I hear any songs on insanity, I'll let you know! Nightmare before christmas is has such a great soundtrack though that words or not, that music itself really would be great inspiration. The one song that comes to mind is when santa is asking the bogeyman to release him.

@Cheeseboy, that's a great pic! I could imagine some kind of background scene would really enhance it. Something dark and scary, but I'm not sure what. I could imagine a burning village or something with the strokes you have now (the darker could be thought of as building rough outlines and the yellow is the color of fire), but I'm not sure if that scene would make sense lorewise or if that's the kind of background you were thinking.

@Dutch - that candle is a very nice added touch, but since it's outside, maybe a class cover around it would make sense (to stop wind from blowing the candle out)? I also just noticed the spider web, which although looks fantastic, the shading on it almost makes it look like it's carved into the wall instead of being on it. Although, I'm not sure if it's just my comp making it look that way. Also, I don't think you need anything else in the right side if you make the web pop out a little more (or have a dangling spider)

@oh_frustration - nice sketch so far! Can't wait to see the rest!

@Chicken of the seas: Last time I tried to make my clothes looking dirty, I first took my fabric to put them into coffee mixed with water, but this will only work if your fabric has a light colour. Like Kiyakoreena said, you can always try to use some paint, there exist special fabric paint, so you can try by mixinx colours and got the result you really want? ^^ Sandpaper is also a great solution to make the texture of your fabric more dirty and old looking. ^^

For the blood, I just went to a funparty-shop and bought some fake blood Just watch out to not buy flashy looking pink blood (that's what I did the first time ~_~)

You mean the Oogie Boogie song? Oogie Boogie is creepier than most people think, I believe. People I know view him as just a sack of bugs - but what is he really? A pillowcase of bugs - imagine what he's meant to represent... your pillowcase.

Anyways, on my way home, I thought of a great ending for my story:

Typically I think out the ending before anything else, then I think out where I want to start, then plot out key points in the story - then I write from beginning to end, connecting the dots. For this, however, I couldn't help but make the end sooner.

That's so amazing, Odinius I love all the detail you've put in there, especially with the placement of each leaf, so perfect! At first I thought you were doing something ginormous because of the candy corn (snooping in your album :P ), but then I saw (and love) that shot with the teeny tiny cc on your finger! Are you using play-doh? or some other kind of clay? I remember doing a play-doh sculpture for a school project and it had bubbled up over time when it had dried out I tried painting elmer's glue on it to conserve it, but it just gave it a dull sheen Looking forward to the next pics

Another update.

And here's the link to my WIP gallery for the first post: http://s1110.photobucket.com/albums/...hadytradesman/

Starting to add the "skin" layer now. Almost completely done with the lower left leg xD. This is a process I have to repeat A LOT before the sculpture is done. Maybe I'll invite a friend over. D:

In case you're curious about the background, here's what in it:
two hot glue guns of different calibers, as well as a bag of ammo for both
A pad of newsprint for setting the hot glue guns down on and making structure (and drawing of course! )
Scissors
Twine
Work gloves
My "binder-o-effigy" which is full of reference pictures
extension cords
A wheelbarrow with a bale of hay. I plan on using it to decorate the area and add more support to the sculpture. It's getting kind of windy out~!

Not pictured:
trash bag
Bag-o-twigs
Trash can -o- twigs

@Odinius: Oh nice! Very clean looking. I hope you can finish it up in time; I'd love to see what you've envisioned for it.

@Thistle Xandra: Don't worry, I'll post up a video!

@Oh_Frustration: Looks like a good start! What's it going to look like in the end?

@Minami: Sorry to hear about that. I hope you feel better soon

Okay-do, here's my progress (finally)!

So, I drew the spirit with only aqua blue, black and white plus the orange eye, and I plan on adding some light green to make the final colour somewhat turquoise. The contrast between black, white and the blue is much greater in reality, and the actual picture lacks the noise >_<' (E: Which may be caused by the ISO 800 setting I forgot to change to 100 when taking the pic O.o)

@ Marshmallow, I agree with Thistle. Charr skulls for the win :3 Looking adorable

@ Shady, good progress! Tighten the end of the left (our right) arm a bit. Are you gonna add some kinda claws too? Keep up the great work

@ Minami, sorry to hear that...

More edit: What makes me wonder is that why don't they accept entries from Quebec? Also, I'm European and only 17 so I have to take additional trouble sending my work Darn I wish I was born in '92!

Loving the soft brush work Marsh! Looks adorable. Btw, the fire under the kettle is a bit weak, perhabs make it a bit stronger. And Charr skulls are fun, or just pumpkins <3 Moar pumpkins >

@ Oh frustration: Looking good, are you actually drawing that on chalk?

Nope, not chalk, just dull coloured pencils and horrible ISO settings on my camera It looks like chalk, true... I should have used ISO 100 with the flash instead of ISO 800 and flash. It's so noisy now.

If I was you, Outcast, I'd define the pumpkin head further, like, make its edges more visible, and also define the guy's mouth and eye edges more. Now it lacks a little bit of contrast on the head. Other than that it looks very nice and I'm looking forward to your progress

@ Oh_Frustration: very nice! I thought you were doing chalk, too, because I'm apparently so much of an art newb that I didn't know you could do pencils on black paper. I really like the look

@Outcast: I wouldn't have guessed you're new in digital art since your pic looks really nice (digital art seriously amazes me!). I really like how you made the the letters in the mouth, very clever The overall look is great!

@ Darcy & Oh_frustation: I hadn't realized rules were so complicated for contests until I read the notes on the site. In the FAQ , there's something else on how Canada has to answer a math question o_O

@Najade: Very cool and I like your coloring style on the trees. Reminds me alot like Bob Ross on TV who does alot of his painting with the edge of a metal tool (can't think of name off hand, doh).

@ Minami: I don't know how I missed you mentioning your grandma I'm so sorry for your loss <<Comfort hugs>>

Oh Frustration - Oh myyy I love the details on the rittt <333 and the moon looks awesome :Q

Outcast - Ouu~ I agree with what Frustration said c: It's a bit hard to read the 'Happy Halloween' You could try lowering the opacity on the glowy-ness of the eyes/mouth? ( D': Idk if you can do that with gimp)

Najade - Ohhhh.. That looks goood # O#!! The bottom of the tree (trunk? >W>) of the one next to the necro looks a bit flat o: Maybe add something there? or round off the edges of the tree? xD" idkidkD|!!

It's the angsty teenager of the Canadian provines essentially. |

In medium; Quebec has a set series of laws and restrictions that apply to what does and does not qualify as a contest, certain minimums that have to be met, and a bunch of random jargon dictated by the Regie des Loteries et Courses du Quebec (Rules for Lotteries and Contests in Quebec).

Sorry to hear that Mina. Here, have some Chubby-Ritz walking to cheer you up.

EDIT:

Flippin' hell, this file is monstrous. Took this past weekend easy - needed a short break from doing anything art related. Added in a few of the last details: lighting and that display case sort of thing. I still need to add the extra lighting to give it sort of a "hazy" feeling to it. But that will come in on the next and final step to the piece.

Najade, really like how you use your custom brushes! At least I assume you use them The light on the trees looks quite random though, try to make the sides darker or the center darker depending on where the light is coming from :3

Charliee.. I really liked the way you've drawn the girls. But they dont at all fit the scenery though >: ( While they have a very cool painty style, the hallway is almost real. The styles clash a bit. Also the way the light is on their feet suggests that the light is like above them, which doesnt suggest such shadows (unless they have big backpacks ) Perhabs saturn the girls a bit to make them fit better in the picture? think the colour of them is just a tat bit too strong.

Just tell me your secret. How do you draw lines so straight. Those wooden plints you've drawn looks like crazily real. The way you've put detail in those things is just simply amazing. <3

So finaly I've been able to draw some again, and luckily will have the next 3 days. Got exams coming up from 26th of October, so want to finish it quickly so I can start studying.

Here is some progress, starting refining the Mad King a bit. Decided that if time allows me to make the Ghosthouse in the back realistic instead of with the black outlines like it has in GW. But only if time allows it, so we'll see. Still want to add some fun details in it aswell.
