Best bit of advice you've received regarding GW?
TheGizzy
I was just thinking about how much I've learned from the members on these forums, and how glad I am that I found Guru so early into my explorations in GW. Everything from learning how to make my toon and hero builds more effective, to understanding more about the GW economy, and even getting ideas on how to work effectively on my HoM - and WHY doing that is actually desirable.
So I'm curious to hear what advice others have received that they felt really made a big difference for their game play. What advice enhanced your experience, or helped you meet your personal goals?
For me, at least right now, I'm thinking about the advice I was given when my toon was just a few days old... the Halloween activities were coming up, and I knew I wasn't really going to be ready to participate in them since I didn't plan on leaving pre for a few weeks. Someone suggested that my timing in joining GW was excellent since I could start collecting items for the Wintersday collectors and be ready to obtain those rewards when the time came. They told me to read up on the Wiki to learn what collectors wanted, what the rewards were, and what use those rewards could be to me.
So with Wintersday fast approaching now, I've got a couple of panes in my storage dedicated solely to items I've found which I can exchange for rewards during the festival. My account benefits in two different ways from this advice... one, I'll be able to make a rather significant dent (more like a crater) in the three drunk/sweet/party titles, without investing any gold in doing so. That of course will help with my HoM stuff for GW2. Two, I've created a cash commodity worth a great deal more than the sale/salvage value of those collected trophies... because other people are also working on their titles and need those points. That's money I can then spend on the elite armors and such I'll need for HoM - not to mention the fact that the only elementalist armor design I REALLY like is the Vabbian, and I am personally lusting over it. LOL
What about you? What was the indispensable advice you received when you were new?

Pick. Up. Everything.
It amazes me how often my guild mates will leave coins or white items on the ground and later complain about not having the cash for vabbian armor or something. Clear out your inventory at every outpost and only leave items if your inventory is completely full.

Best advice I received for my warrior was to bring a bow and learn to pull. As the most heavily armored party member, it is the warrior's job to bait the enemy and pull groups small enough for the party to handle without dragging the whole party into the melee.

Stop using blood magic/ ele damage as a necro and change to curses. Not on this forum but a guy helping us through some missions.
But on this forum I learned a lot of the smaller but so usefull things.

When I was first told there was a wiki with all the answers. After that I didn't fail every mission that I tried H/H-ing.

Best bit of advice that I received when I started some five years ago? "This is a computer game, not a job. You don't have to rush anything and complete everything within days"....from a beta tester player when I told him GW was my first MMO. I'm still enjoying the game to this day.....

Probably the guy who on this forum taught me the trick to zone in and out of Rata Sum so I could raptor farm and always /resign right by the door. That trick made me a lot of extra money in saved time not having to run across the town every farm or dealing with a leecher.

* Dump the pet.
* Play your class, not your secondary (there are exceptions, but it's solid advice for new/inexperienced players).
* Pick up everything, yes.
* Listen to people who are better than you if your goal is to improve.
* Have fun and don't do things you don't enjoy. It's a game, not a second job you don't get paid for.

"After Ascension you can swap your secondary prof everytime you need....But you know this....right?"
What a guildmate said to me when i was QQing because half the way in eotn(after finished prop) i realised how much useless is a N/R(using the bow)...oh wait maybe this should go under the "Dumbest thing you've done in GW" thread right?

Although to be fair, I once wanted an emerald edge and it was hard as hell to find (and a lot of people tried selling me an emerald blade instead thinking I was just confused).

3 things.
Don't Leroy, it's not fun for anyone else.
If someone offers a pretty decent price (even if it means you'll lose a little money) sell it.
It's just a game, don't take it too seriously.

to use 3 necro heroes in PvE. I've been using them ever since. I'm not using sabway or discordway btw, 3 N/Rt's (or N/Mo) just give you loads of possibilities, you can adapt the builds to every area / mission you're doing, and you can h/h pretty much whole GW with it if you know how.

- If you can beat Tombs of the Primeval Kings with heroes & henchmen, you can handle anything.
- If you don't do the missions in order in Prophecies, don't complain about the difficulty of enemies.
- Spiteful Spirit is not the best Necromancer elite skill. If anyone tells you that, they don't know how to make their own builds.
- Warriors & Monks are similar. Warriors are helpful for getting enemies to attack them and not you. Monk are helpful for getting you to survive in case Warriors mess up. However, Ritualists can do both, so be warned what people want vs. need.
- Bloodstone Fen in Hard Mode is the best example of a mission to use to test your hero builds. Nearly every enemy can do something to make you ponder what if.
- It's spelled tome, not tomb.

not really about guild wars. But I try to apply it to alot of shtuff

2)
Play the game how you want. But keep in mind how it can affect other players.
It makes it so you don't QQ when anet nerfs your build because you understand what effect it is having on the economy and other peoples game.
3)
Don't complain when your failing. Figure out why your failing and fix it.

4 things I can remember now that really changed my game experience. In order:
1. "Don't spread your attribute points on more than 2, max 3 attributes. And play your damn main profession, not your secondary!". I was a noob R/Mo lvl 10 in Ascalon with points in marks, expertise, beast mastery, healing prayers and smiting prayers. Yeah. With Banish and Bane Signet. And Healing Breeze. No att was higher than 4.
2. "Use the GW wiki if you wanna know more about that quest. Oh, you didn't know one existed?". Oooooh, the hours I spent there reading about stuff... I have been playing windowed ever since for quick wiki access...
3. "You wanna buy some cool bows? Here, I have some nice stuff." The dude was a scammer, trying to sell me 3 custo-ed bows, a purple, gold and green one. It was the first time I ever saw any weapon of a different color from the blue of my Nevermore and I was dumbfounded by the shinies. I didn't buy anything since his cheapest, the purple one, would have me pay 1.5k, which was 200g more than I had (yeah, I didn't know then what custo-ed meant, but I asked some guys after and found out). But I was like "Whoa, you can advance in the game and get better weapons and COME BACK HERE (Ascalon) and SELL THEM TO PEOPLE?!" *ka-ching*
4. "Dude, don't use the guru auctions for PCs, use the forum for that. Everyone can post they want to sell anything at any price, but that doesn't mean it's its actual worth." That came after 8 months of me being so proud of myself about knowing about guru and getting "accurate" PCs from the Auctions page there.

- As soon as you can get to the other continents, DO IT. Especially true for NF.
- A good hero team is more than just running good builds. Rune them and at least give them collector weapons.
- Research, research, research. Wiki is your friend.
- Unless you want to be shocked by the stupidity of others, turn off Local chat unless you need to see what's said there.
- Don't listen to people who tell you to start in Prophecies. Everyone has a different learning curve.
- Hoarding stuff may take up room but is ultimately profitable and can save you a lot of work.
- Don't spend your money on things you don't need. Blowing all your gold on skills early on only to find you don't have enough for an AL60 set will hurt.
- Everyone has a different definition of "difficult".
- PvXwiki is good and bad in equal measures.
- If someone says you're "doing it wrong", ask them why that is and listen to constructive criticism. Sometimes people do have a point in their flaming but lack the skills to word it non-offensively.
- Sometimes it's best to just drop it and move on (applies to a lot of things)
- Everyone has different playing styles. Unless they're trying to force it on you, leave them to it if you don't agree.

I think Prophecies has the most developed, and well-paced, storyline of all the campaigns. It's also the campaign that depicts your own character's development the most "naturally," as it were. So if you're really into the story aspect, you SHOULD consider starting in Prophecies.
But there's absolutely no reason you should NEED to start there to learn the game. Istan and Shing Jea Island are just as easy (and offer better opportunities to learn game mechanics, IMO) as Pre-searing and lower level Ascalon.
Best advice I've ever gotten may have actually been to click-walk, rather than hold both mouse buttons or use the keyboard. Especially in a potentially laggy situation, it makes for a MUCH cleaner sync between the server and your game client, because it only requires one command ("go to the clicked spot") to be relayed, rather than an ongoing series of "walk forward, walk forward, walk forward, walk forward...."

Only whites over 50g, but yeah, I was shocked when I learned how much extra money you could make like that.

It's not ONLY whites over 50g. Some would say it's whites over 25. Personally, I make my decision more on the level of the area and mobs. If a level 24 mob drops a bow originally worth 38g (a low value for such an area), I'll ID it, and chances are it'll go up at least 15-20g in value.
But if a level 12 drops the same bow, odds are it's NOT going up in value by a significant amount.
Now, it's no guarantee, either way. But using 50 as your line is kind of dumb, because I've had LOTS of 53g items ID to 54g, and probably just as many 45g items ID to 90g.
Note: you can ID greens as well, and this DOES make a difference in their merch value (sometimes significant). Ignore any idiot who tries to tell you otherwise.
