Have I Committed a Faux Pas?
Godrik Gandolfi
I've been playing GW - mostly PvE for about 9 months now, but am only just getting to the point of accumulating reasonable amounts of gold and trading, working towards titles etc.
I had managed to buy some party title points in the form of a couple stacks of ghosts-in-the-box. These were bought with funds earned fair and square in the game, with an in-game trade with another player.
I was standing in Kamadan American district and while watching the trading window was spamming some of these points. I then recieved a very rude whisper telling me to 'GO TO YOUR GUILD HALL. ****ING IDIOT'
Have I broken any game rules or been unknowingly rude (in which case sorry!) or was I just unlucky enough to meet a stroppy adolescent on a bad day?
Any advice - I don't want to be causing offence unwittingly.

That guy was just some random idiot/angry person/troll. Ignore him. There is nothing wrong with spamming items in outposts. If anyone is seriously bothered by it, they could just change districts, and even if they didn't want to do that they could have used some politeness. I'd have told him to get stuffed.
psycore
Admitedly though the ghost box is one of the more annoying consumables mainly because of that screeching sound it makes espeacially when it is non stop when you are spamming them.
distilledwill
Ignore him, you're totally free to spam consumables in outposts. It doesn't bother me.
TheGizzy
Yup, ignore him.
People spam their points in outposts all the time. Yes, the GIB is a bit annoying because of the screeching, but that's just how it was made and people are used to it. Not everyone has a guild hall to go to - that's what outposts are for.
If you get a message like that again, just put them on ignore and go about your business. If you're honestly worried about it in the future, and don't have a GH to go to, just take yourself off to any minor outpost where there are unlikely to be people (there are plenty of those) and spam away.
But seriously, I wouldn't worry about it. You didn't do anything wrong.

Nope, that was a troll.
I would have opened a few boxes right behind him. Maybe one of them might have gone up his behind and knocked some common curtesy into his head .

Thank you all very much - I feel better about it now.
I do take the point about the noise - I wasn't wearing my headphones this morning so was probably oblivious to how loud it might have been.
Thanks again

And the fact that it completely lags up the district if theres a lot of it going on, no reason not to do it in your GH imo. Nothing technically wrong with it, but its common courtesy on your part to do it in your GH, and he should have had the common courtesy not to abuse you like that about it. Your computer might be well able for it, but im sure some people in the district dont have computers strong enough for the lag this causes, next time just do it in your GH Courtesy goes both ways
Getting off on a technicality doesn't always mean your innocent *insert random OJ Simpson joke here*

Yes I see what you mean about the lag from the excess graphical effects. OK, I'll spam to my hearts content in my Guild Hall from now on :-)

Personally, I have no problem with it, just to clarify that But I am just playing devils advocate and saying where that guy was probably coming from

On a side note, I remember not too many months ago when I saw my first fireworks in game (in Factions) and I thought it was great; now my first thought is "More damn fireworks going off again." Though I've set them off myself a few times after getting the travellers' gift of the disco ball.
Kojima
No. You are fine. That fellow does not know what he was talking about. No one should get offended by what you did, seriously.
Godrik Gandolfi
@ syronj -
Yes I remember Wintersday last year - we'd only reached Lion's Arch a few months before, and when it changed it was magical, especially with all the fireworks and snowman summoners going off. My two oldest sons play GW with me and really loved it.
But - yes, the magic does wear off after a while :-)

if you're worried about lag you should switch districts. Why ruin someone else's fun.
Just remember the guy's name, next time you see him go next to him and open up a can of ghost whoop box on him.

I would of reported him for language violation / harassment...

People spamming party items in outposts, even GIB, is one of my favorite parts of the game. There's nothing better than fighting your way through hordes of monsters and coming into an outpost party. The very first time my wife and I got to Lion's Arch, someone was spamming fireworks, GIB, and that sort of thing, and that's still my all-time favorite GW moment. I think it was the very tail end of the Halloween celebration, too.
So, please, keep it up!

You do know that if someone is lagging you, he ruins YOUR fun? I mean... is it that much of a hassle for 1 person to go to a Russian or Polish district and spam things there? I mean it's ignorable for me, but your post is REALLY selfish.

Some people dislike it.
Other people enjoys it.
I've seen a few people look and enjoy when a friend of mine and I just go on spamming thousands of snowmen and stuff - I think for some new players it is nice. For veterans is more "meh".

Seems like the consumables were killing his FPS or the sounds/animations were annoying him.
As my wise mother, being a poet laureate with an honors degree with distinction in Shakespearean studies would say: "tough shite."
A while back, most tonics had associated sounds which were removed for being irritating in outposts so if Anet thought party fireworks were a problem then they'd do something about it. No violation has occured.

Personally I enjoy when people spam such stuff
beerelf
Spam away buddy. That guy was just being a jobs worth.
garethporlest18
I always do it in an outpost, most of the time people never complain so that's why I do it. Plus it makes someone say something all the time, it's pretty cool.
Except when the ghost bug happened and they got stuck like that and someone spammed 500 ghosts in Grotto and I had 2 FPS. Well even then I was having fun.

Best advice - ignore him/her/it.

That's what those items are for.
Spam them away, kiddo!

I find the ghosties annoying too, I always get someone standing almost next to me when I've got GW's minimised and waiting for the 'Ping' noise of a pm when selling (volume usually up quite high to hear over Windows Media Centre). More than once I've had to panic and jump over to turn volume down on speakers when the ghosties starting moaning
I'd never pm anyone about it though I move to another part of town and go back to watching what I was.

Thank you all for your kind replies and helpful comments. It's been a nice welcome into the community and I've been very impressed with the politeness and courtesy in the game for the most part - as I mentioned earlier I have been quite comfortable with my children playing the game with me.
Having said that I just went through a few more ghosts with speakers on and after that I will stick to spamming the quieter things in public :-)

It's brilliant! I love it when I see someone in Kamadan blasting off thousands of Ghosts/Snowmen! I just regret being cheap and buying non-spammable Pary points, the spammable ones are much more fun.
Dosearius Takerius
to hell with that. If you don't like me doing what Anet has allowed me to do, then YOU can switch districts. I'm not going to. In fact, if someone actually has the nut to send me a rude whisper like that, you can bet your last dollar that I'll spend the rest of my time in that district standing right next to that person while i continue to pop off more snowmen or ghosts.
ian1421
Don't worry, he is just afraid of ghosts

Noway that I am doing this alone in my GH, I share the fun
Verene
Spam them wherever you want.
I generally go through my spammables in my GH, but that's because they annoy me personally, and I don't want to bother other people. But if someone's spamming them in Kamadan or LA, I just ignore it, or go to another district myself instead of complaining...or sometimes add to the fun by setting off some fireworks.

i dont mind people spamming ghosts in town. thought they do make it lag and no i shouldnt have to leave when they can go find a unmanned town for it. that saying he was rude in saying what he did. but i do have how those people run around people spamming it if you have to spam in a full town why not just stand in a spot and spam? works just as good as runing all over town spamming. <3
Dzjudz
They are pretty annoying when you have GW minimised and then you open it to hear a thousand of these things at once though .
shoesbags
I think the consumable spam is kind of entertaining to watch, really. Watching a candy corn abomination run around dropping snowmen and firing off sparklers just cracks me up, I don't know why.
Wyndy
one might have a good spot in the trade queue that they would lose if they left the district to pop points.

1. Person who dislikes it can, turn down their volume, leave the district, learn to enjoy life and fun.
2. It's not your fault people don't have a computer to handle simple graphics, if people lag out because of some effects on screen, the need to lower the settings more in options. Plus if they can't just simply look away from what you are doing so their frames per second (FPS) doesn't drop than just...wow.
3. It's not against the user agreement to use your items continuously but, if you got a bunch of people together with the purpose to crash the server than it would be.
4. Next time someone whispers you like that, as others have said "ignore list". Don't walk up to them and use your items then wouldn't be any better than him.
Hearing stories like this of people who just can't leave others alone to have some fun the way they want to, just annoys me.

People just hate when others spamming Ghosts and Snowmen. Ghosts like someone stated make a noise(I wouldn't know though, Havent heard GW in 2ys now) and it can make other people lag sometimes, well snowmwn can atleast from what I've heard and experienced on my old computer.
enter_the_zone
Yeah, it's a faux pas, but it's not an offense or against the rules or anything, just impolite. I wouldn't care because I haven't played GW with the sound on since.... um, about the time Factions came out, but the GIB are annoying if you have the sound on.

1) You only get 10 ignore slots in your friends list. If you act like some of the people here and waste them on trivial reactions like what you described, it's going to fill up fast. The ignore list is there to prevent continued harassment (if someone is PMing you non stop, or if the current all chat is offending you with racist conversation or something).
2) put your headphones on and spam some Ghosts and listen to the noise it makes. It is really loud ESPECIALLY when a lot of them are going off at once. But there's an easy solution that will both avoid irritating other players and allow you to stay in your district and watch the trade. Go to an empty part of the town where there aren't many people standing around.
3) Don't intentionally harass people by going next to them and spamming them, even if they react rudely. The game has been around for 5 years so it's taken for granted that most people know how loud a Ghost is. If someone reacts rudely, it's because they assumed you know that Ghosts are loud. Being rude isn't the best way to react but they are in their rights to react that way. If you are really sore about it, you can report them for offensive language (IF THEY USED ANY), because in that case they did do something wrong, and being reported is the correct punishment.
Don't forget you can organize parties or something in certain districts or with your guild in your guildhall for spamming items!
