Honestly, if the guys looked better I doubt there would be more male characters in the game either way.

I haven't seen too many male characters in games, at all, looking good enough to be my free choice. For example, the all-manly Kratos looks quite decent in GoW 3, but simply because he fits the game, and because the player gets used to his appearance (facial expression, especially) after two hours of playing. When compared to female characters in game (Aphrodite, Poseidon Princess), his model just isn't looking too good - while Aphrodite and her, hmm, friends are idealised as well, they still appear more realistic, eye-catching and so forth - even to my fiancee.
That dissoinance is even more visible in MMOs. From Lineage 2, to Runes of Magic, to Aion, to Guild Wars, there's always something wrong with the male models. Be it they're too idealised, too perfectly looking, making them look transsexual, not to invoke the word 'gay'; be it they're too manly, overmasculine even, like Kratos, being more laughable than enjoyable to play with; be it the mix of those two, probably the worst option.
It surely has something to do with the mass media that flood us with images of beautiful, photoshopped women all the time. We got used to the appearance of idealised females, even with some artifical touch to them, while there's no male ideal of beauty (or attractiveness, or handsomeness, or 'decent-lookness' for their role in the game...), especially one that'd be easily applicable for a computer game.
Probably the only male character from video games i'm willingly playing - and enjoy the visualisation, most of the animations, expressions and so on - is Geralt from The Witcher. Vesemir from the first Witcher is cool - and fits his role, not to mention the book description. Varric from Dragon Age 2 looks fine, at least his looks fits his personality and the role he plays in the game.
Still, it's much easier for Isabela to be appealing for - both male and female - players than for Varric to be appealing (credited?) for either.

If you're so insecure about your sexuality that you stare at your PC while playing guild wars, you should really just come out of the closet.

I know i'm picking a troll track of an idiot, but...
It's actually the other way around. If your character of choice looks like Kratos, if you enjoy staring at male butt for hours every day, then there
might be something 'wrong' with you. Preferring to look at female curves is quite normal, even for females - the truth is, the argument of 'i'm a female so i play female chars' is only one amongst many, other being eg. 'female chars are made/animated/... better'.
That said, if i may choose to, i always pick females.

I play all male characters because I am a guy and I see my characters as a representation of me in-game.

I always found that odd, actually. Sure, it's normal to become fond of one's character, to like it, to treat it like a virtual pet or somethin - and it doesn't matter how it looks like, what that character is. However, identifying oneself with his avatar is beyond me.
Maybe i got the necessary distance by playing lots of pen and paper RPGs. Yet even then, when i roleplay - or, maybe, especially then - i prefer to play as someone different than i am, including different looks, different outlook on the world, different sex even. It's also reflected in my naming habit - i never name my characters with my real name or the nickname i use here and there, it's always something different, something personal
for that character, not for me.
