To reword it - implying that something's 'wrong' with me, aka coming outta the closet, just because i roll female characters is silly. Especially that, if we're talking about having 'issues', it's much more possible if you roll a male char being a male - one may either enjoy looking at other males' butts or one may need to pump up his masculine ego by having a muscular, strong, Kratos-like, or Aragorn-like, or Legolas-like avatar in game.
It actually reminds me of one of Friends' episodes, where Joey wore female underwear just because he feels fine and secure about his malehood.
no. you got my post out of context. i was replying to a post that says they stare at an ass, not just because you roll female.

I just choose a random gender because it's an RPG. My main is a male warrior, which reflects my main in every other game I play. Male, melee, heavy armor. Sometimes it gets distracting playing as a female character wearing slutty armor when you're trying to watch the screen and your hp....

I had a male sin and such, until I realized the armors on the females were just plain better looking at bought some extreme makeovers.

My main is an female Ele, she was my first char and I knew nothing about the game (I got it as a free trial with a video card, hence the name Sapphire). The only reason I can think I made a female rather than a male is that she just looked better on the the character creation screen. Quite glad I went female now, male eles just dont look good.

I now have:
Male - War, Rit, Monk, Mes, Para
Female - Ele, Nec, Sin, Ranger, Mes (Pre)
And one Pvp char which changes depending on my mood.

I would prefer the Mes to be female, the armors look better. To me war and monk should be male. The others I dont mind either way really.

For example, the all-manly Kratos looks quite decent in GoW 3, but simply because he fits the game, and because the player gets used to his appearance (facial expression, especially) after two hours of playing. When compared to female characters in game (Aphrodite, Poseidon Princess), his model just isn't looking too good - while Aphrodite and her, hmm, friends are idealised as well, they still appear more realistic, eye-catching and so forth - even to my fiancee.
That dissoinance is even more visible in MMOs. From Lineage 2, to Runes of Magic, to Aion, to Guild Wars, there's always something wrong with the male models. Be it they're too idealised, too perfectly looking, making them look transsexual, not to invoke the word 'gay'; be it they're too manly, overmasculine even, like Kratos, being more laughable than enjoyable to play with; be it the mix of those two, probably the worst option.

It surely has something to do with the mass media that flood us with images of beautiful, photoshopped women all the time. We got used to the appearance of idealised females, even with some artifical touch to them, while there's no male ideal of beauty (or attractiveness, or handsomeness, or 'decent-lookness' for their role in the game...), especially one that'd be easily applicable for a computer game.

Probably the only male character from video games i'm willingly playing - and enjoy the visualisation, most of the animations, expressions and so on - is Geralt from The Witcher. Vesemir from the first Witcher is cool - and fits his role, not to mention the book description. Varric from Dragon Age 2 looks fine, at least his looks fits his personality and the role he plays in the game.
Still, it's much easier for Isabela to be appealing for - both male and female - players than for Varric to be appealing (credited?) for either.
I don't think you should be saying AION here. In AION you have the choice of making so many different characters. I play AION and I can make a houndred of different sized good looking men. Also AION is based on korean beauty ideals which means skinny, femenine looking men. Women with small feet and cute faces. You can see it on the armor too. In asian countries the over knee socks is extremely popular and considered very, very sexy, and a bounche of the armor in AION got just that.

I dunno. But I find many male characters to be looking good. I just find many guys just too picky. I guess you can't please anybody unless you give them the options like AION got. The only thing AION misses is to give more base bodies and faces for all races. They are all based on koreans(Obviously since it's a korean game). Same with TERA.

The only thing that irritates me, is that I just don't wanna be stuck in the role as a big breasted(Sry to every woman with big breasts. I just prefer small x)) super skinny model character. Just like I think alot of guys don't want to be with uberbuff, awkward weird male characters either.

I do agree with you thought. I don't think we can break these beauty ideals before we have learned that humans are all different therefor there can be no beauty ideals but only individual beauty.

First and foremost I make all my characters female because they are pretty, and like many others have said - If i'm going to be staring at something that long, i'd like it to look good.

But secondly, I also make all my characters as small as possible. For some reason, a tiny little female character overcoming all odds is more epic than some huge brute/conan type toon.

I made my first female character as a warrior, because I wanted to roll a warrior, but didn't want to have to deal with the male's stupid dance emote. As an added bonus, I found casting animations to look nicer on the female model than the male model.

From there, I made more female characters both to even out the male/female population of my characters, since all male seemed like it would be dull to me, and because armors and dyes looked more appealing than their male counterparts.

This, but personally it came down to the fact that it's too difficult to make a male character that doesn't look vapid or just plain distasteful. I've only made two but rerolled for a female warrior; so much nicer.

I'll make a mixture in GW2; the artists have put guys on the cool wall, along with just about every armor and clothing I've seen.

Right now I have 6 Female characters(Monk, Derv, Mes, Necro, Sin, Ranger), and 4 Male characters (Ele, War, Rit, Para). When I had first gotten the game, all of my characters were male. Over time, I would get sick of the look of some of the casting animations/armor sets/face or hairstyles, and would re-roll to female and try that out. The characters I have now are essentially the results of that.

For the most part, I don't really zero in on the appearance of my character in combat, but when I pop up the loading screen, or I'm hanging out in the GH, I want a character that has appealing features and more importantly, has an armor set or combination that I feel looks the best out of what is available for the class.

Not only that, but I've come over time to think of my PvE characters as a group of adventurers (an idea that is much easier to envision now with merc heroes), and I felt that having a diverse group of characters made more sense for that idea.

It is a work of art if you don't think about the GW female body. That one is so disproportioned. I guess it's beautiful if you've been painted by what media want you to think is beautiful.

And another thing, why are nobody saying the male body is a work of art? Everybody focuses so much on the females in games, media, everywhere. It's like we've all forgotten both the genders have an incredibly beautiful body. I wish people would just understand that. That a male body is just as beautiful as a female one...

I understand this argument, but I stare at scenery.

Anyway, in PvP I always roll female (or if it's a mesmer, dervish, rit, or paragon: of which I only have a PvE mesmer because I only run core professions in PvE for nostalgia and /age purposes).

As far as this topic goes, it's been rehashed hundreds of times.

Usual responses:
* I play male because I am female and don't want to get hit on by creepy people ( I have had this happen playing a paragon in PvE, wtf)
* I play male because I am male
* I play female because I am male and would rather stare at a woman's butt than a man's
* I play female because I am female and don't feel right playing a male
* I play female because I am female and find the male characters ugly
* For X profession, ___ gender has better armor (usual female)

I'm a female in real life and usually play female characters. I might make a male ranger as my first male character but I could also make a nice female ranger from NF. Decisions, decisions. I used to make a lot more male characters, especially when non mmo's were involved. But now I mostly ever make females.

If I roll a male I think it's understandable that I want him to be hot.

As for females, I think they look very pretty in GW. My personal opinion is that the guys saying they play women from lack of options or bad armor is actually meaning that females are just a lot better. Because the designers really put a lot of effort into making them look pretty.

There are also non slutty female armors. Those are the ones I tend to go for. No Elite Druid or Elite Gladiator for me thanks.

PS: Guys aren't long-necked. The females are. Particularly elementalist and warrior. :P

Needed to write this over again. I know allot of guys get so upset if you question this stuff:

I sorta feel that you don't see art in any. Do you think more like; f*ck able or not f*ck able?

A male is as capable of looking at his own body as art as a female. The gender has nothing to say. Honestly I feel it comes more to maturity. No, it's not an insult. Just how it feels like to me.

I'm a guy I have no single doubt about me being heterosexual.

I don't think will be tempted to go homo just because I happen to watch a representation of a male person for extended period of times.
Which is something that a good majority of people that post on this issue seem to struggle with.

I roll females because I can.If male was the only sex I could choose from then I would still play the game simply because I like it and would not instantly stop playing because i can't get off while playing the game.

I mostly stick to with gender I feel fits better with the class, yes it may be sexist, but I'm not saying that women should stay in the kitchen and men should be kings. It's just what I feel fit better.

This is how I mostly go with the genders according to with class it is about.

Warrior-Man
Ranger-Man/Woman,this is one of the few classes that I feel fits both very well.
Mesmer-Female,the clothing that this game offers and the way the class acts only allows woman to be a real choice
Elementalist-Female, but In WoW for example I feel both can fit this class.
Necromancer-Female/Male Females fit a little bit better but both are okay with this class
Monk-Female Male are okay in this game being monks but they role fits better with female
Assassin-Female, again its because the clothes fit better on females
Ritualist-Females-the clothes and the witch doctor type theme fit both sexes both the way the class moves goes better with females.
Paragon-Man, this goes with the Spartans and the ancient war era, Greece, Rome,Egyptians etc
Dervish-Male/Female the whole class itself fits both, the clothing is odd, while it is basically a dress it isn't a "woman's" dress its more like the clothing man and woman still wear in parts of the middle east/Africa which after all is where the dervish gets its roots from.

If the Paragon were Spartan or Greek he'd be equipped with a two-handed spear several meters in length and a small round shield. Not a throwing spear that has no chance in hell of hitting a target after being thrown. I mean, just look at those awful spear skins. I know GW world is makebelieve and magic but come on. If arrows are affected by aerodynamics so should the spears be.

Why has no one admitted that they roll female characters cuz they like pretending to be a gurl. It's ok. It's 2011. Go ahead and admit it.

All of my mains are males. I don't spend time checking their butts, but if you can't help it... Any female toons were either made by my ex gf or made to mule/trade.

Boys who make female toons? Do you/would you also make a girl toon for Sims or other online virtual social sites? It's understandable, they probably have better clothes and are better to look at.

I originally started playing a female character because of the armor selection. I run a mesmer most of the time, and the low end male mesmer armors are just awful. However, I have noticed people tend to be more polite to me as a female character, which somewhat prompts me to continue running females. It's kinda funny really, as I make no attempts to hide the fact that I'm a guy, but people still see the female avatar and try to behave a bit nicer.

Yes I would, problem is I mostly start of playing with just one character, a make belief me so to say,but i have often ended up expanding the family and don't leave the ladies to be handled by the computer alone.

@cataphract yes I know the paragon isn't really the same as the ancient era shield/spear warriors but I still think they are inspired by the real thing.I mean think about it, if the ancient era units would magically get their spears back in their hand after they thrown it, they would throw it more often, it probably would be adapted and shrunken to a medium size to fit well with both being a wall spike and being thrown

I doubt we'd be having this conversation if they had. We'd be out and about casting Firestorm and clubbing rats instead of baby seals.

As for the shrinking of sarissas - two things:

a) a small throwing spear would get you nowhere against cavalry,
b) a small throwing spear was used by Romans and was called pilum. Since it didn't magically reappear in your hand once you threw it, they carried two or three of these. Once they were expended, they'd get down to chopping-your-limbs business with a gladius . We have those in GW and they're great. Those big, clumsy swords (*cough* Colossal Scimitar, Fellblade *cough*) should really be wielded with both hands.

My two main characters are male, simply because I wont get confused for a girl that way.

I have a few female characters (my pvp ele, my necro, my mesmer, my paragon and my pve ele).

The reason for this is basically to provide balance... oh and I can't stand the idea of a male paragon, they just look gay. Oh and I would've gone female warrior except I hate their dance. Oh and female eles, mesmers and necros are nice to look at.
