$100,000 Prize, Could Be Better Spent?

When I first saw this prize that was up for grabs, I thought it ridiculous, surely Arenanet doesn't have to resort to this to keep players interested. Not only this, but truly a very small amount of people are going to participate and receive any kind of award from this.

Do you think this money is better invested in developing more content for the game, or perhaps Chapter 2? I for one would 100% prefer this.

My guess is that 100,000 bucks didn't come out from their own coffers, but are actually sponsered by ATi and other hardware companies, just so the winning team can endorse their hardware products as being the key to their l33t performance (whatever)

But yes, 100,000 can sure hire a few more Gaile Gray's. More in game moderation will be GREAT.

I think A-net believes 100k is chump change .

Money doesn't determine how good content is for the game. It's the team and the workers on how much work they actually put into it; this team is A-net.

I would think, some like super armor and weapon set (1 of a Kind) would be a great prize and it is useable on all chars/class's on your account.

They don't have to give 100k when they could use that money for chap 2.

I think it is well spent and is a much larger reward than other game competitions.

Content for game is in the works months if not years ahead of time. 100k is just a drop in the bucket for game development.

You need to do this sort of incentive to spark really competitive gaming.

Some people make their living winning comps like this. Like other people have said, 100k is chicken feed when it comes to game dev.

You could get famous going to the championships. If you make a spectacular action at the competition, your name will be rung everywhere... What a feeling that would be.
100k along with the fame I think is just right

Hang on!
This topic brings up another arguement!
Why do PvP players get to have a chance to get $100k but not PvE players?
*ahem*
I'll save that for the next thread.

I realise that it isn't a great deal of money in today's gaming industry, I just think it could be better spent elsewhere, such as hiring people to keep us better informed of progessing developments. I really dislike the lack of information that we receive, especially on the front page of the website. Or perhaps buying some more bandwidth to stop the lag which is blighting servers recently.

Very much agreed with the above post about the lack of something for PvE players, maybe some kind of random "Golden Ticket" could be introduced, it could drop anywhere at any time from anything, which would grant you a cash reward or something.

Since the game has an ecomeny its is important to with hold some information due to the econemy.

If they told you about changes it could affect the ecomeny before it should.

Bear in mind it's a business venture as well, the company benefits from advertising, further exposure of the game etc. I think it's being televised? So probably additional revenue from advertising and so forth.

well considering you have to travel to take part in the final, once that money has been split between 8 of you, and expenses have been removed, its not gonna be *that* impressive (although still an amount I would kill for)

Why is that? Why do you deserve a reward for being the best? Are you that insecure? It's a video game, and being the best at a video game only means your the biggest nerd of them all.

Something as simple as "Things to come this month" would be great, just to know what they are working on, though I realise it's going to be mostly Chapter 2 now.

Also, they havn't been keeping up with the usual articles, such as Guild of the Week and Fansite Friday, answering the hottest questions buzzing around the community.

plus it's not like it's going to one person it's split.

I think it's a great idea and will help to get guildwars more media attention so that everyone can wee the beauty.

Hahaha. You people crack me up. I can see that some people are a bit jealous just because they have no shot at the 100,000 prize. I sure don't have a chance at it but I don't churn out sour grapes because of it.

Considering I know people that play games at Gaming Bars and make $200-500 per weekend just for "playing a video game" you can call me a nerd all day.

I'll be taking that to the bank.

Interesting that the winner of a GW tournament is the "biggest nerd", while dorks who spend their lives dribbling a ball up and down a wooden floor are bloody national heroes.

Odd sense of values we have, huh?

(I don't do PvP, by the way, so my opinion is unbiased.)

i'm pretty sure ANet considers part of the 100k as 'advertisment' cost
the whole tournament is one huge advertisment to kick off the launch of GW anyway isn't it? huge coverage!

My opinion is that the 100,000 is a smart idea. Whether or not it is chump change is irrelevent. The game got boring to me after i beat the game, so i quit playing for a while. Others have most likely done the same thing. Over time more people will beat the game and feel like it has no point, and quit and maybe not purchase the chapter 2. I for one would love the game to have more people and become more popular, but with people quitting because there is nothing left to do in the game, the population will eventually decrease. I think the 100,000 prize is an attempt to keep people playing until the release of the second chapter. I feel the online RPG industry is difficult with great games like WoW(which i find boring). If they can keep people playing then i think the second chapter may help make the game more interesting and replayable. The replayability of this game is much less than WoW in my opinion because of WoW's vast amount of things to do. WoW takes forever to get to lvl 60 and millions of people play it because they never run out of stuff to do. Guild wars doesn't have that. After 300 hours of gameplay, its hard to find stuff to do other than PvP, which after a while gets to repetative. I think they should raise the level caps a bit, make the expansions add more things to do. Just basically make the game replayable or they will not do as well as we all hope. The 100,000 prize will only do so much, but if its all they can think of, then o well.

These are my opinions, and please don't hold them against me.

50k$ / 8 people in the winning team = 6250 each. Considering they probably play GW 25 hours a day and don't have jobs, thats fair for the time they put in.

i have about 5 friends who started WoW at the same time as i started guildwars, since then they have left WoW because there is simple nothing for them to do and it's just become a grind, Guildwars as you said gives about 300 hours of pure fun and then you'd turn to PvP for what i consider as a regular game that a lot of play time, other RPGs giving maybe 40-60hours.

If anything in the past few months i'd say the population has picked up in the european districts in general, which for those players is great because with chapter 2 right around the corner they are going to go straight in to it fresh from chapter 1.

Is there any stats anywere to see populations over time?

Hey, who said nerds are worse than national heroes? =P

As for the $100,000, nothing says good investment better than publicity. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if they are actually earning money from the event. As for using it to hire people... $100,000 can get you, what, two intermediate level workers for a year? $100,000 isn't going to get you very far in terms of work.

oh, no doubt the population has increased in the past few months. I love GW and can't wait for Chapter 2. I think WoW is boring, and i quit it too, but much more people play WoW than guildwars, thats all im getting at. Guildwars has its limits on replayability, and i think WoW has a higher one, which will keep players playing it.

Besides if $100,000 is truly pocket change to Anet I seriously would hope they pump that towards hiring extra GMs.

Are there GMs in GW? If there aren't they should spend a little to hire some.
As for the 100,000, it's better spent on advertising than hiring computer techs or something, only becuase 100,000 doesn't go far in paying workers

Their budget for the GWWC is well over the 100K of prize money. They are paying for airfares, hotel stays, transportion, etc. It is part of a business plan. Anet is playing as intelligently, likely more, than its PvP's top combatants.

Don't whine about the rewards, you paid your fee for the game one time. It costs you no more to continue to play. Appreciate that.

100k is not exactly alot in high-tech nowadays. It's not really even enough to buy a junior programmer for a full year in the US if you take into account of all the various insurances and incidentals.

As marketing budgets go, it's pretty miniscule, since it's easy for a marketing team to spend triple that amount for a 3-day event at a convention.

Guild wars isint a Massively Multiplayer Online game nothing like world of warcraft. Monthly fee's for guild wars is like saying counter-Strike should have have monthly fee's. The way Guild wars is setup is so you only see other people in towns and outposts to form a group for a quest, adventure, misson, chat whatever.Yeah guild wars is boring and some things just kill it of me but hey, its free and with all the new chapters coming out we should get more content.I'm sure ANET will find a way to pay for the world championships its all good.
