I would just like to take a moment to say a big THANK YOU, to John Stumme and the Live Team, who have done a wonderful job this past year of creating new content for us. I know a lot of people are griping these days, I've had my own in the past, but they have done some phenomenal work for us recently.

So please join me in saying Thanks to them and long may their hard work and dedication continue.

/pats live team on the back

(please no griping here, just appreciation for their work)

First, let's talk about costumes and the relation that they have to content. Costumes are made for us by our fantastically talented artists on the GW2 team (our latest ones were designed by Kekai, and worked on by Susan, Kristen, and Patrick.) It's not something that takes away resources from us, or is consuming time that we would otherwise be spending on other projects. I have tried to treat it as the opposite: new microtransactions are a reality of supporting a game of this type, and if that is the case, then I want to focus on getting the most that we can out of it.

For example, I requested the costumes for Winds of Change so that we would have new NPCs work with in order to tell that story. I have tried to use costumes as a means to support the creation of content, and if people choose to buy the costumes that go along with them, that's fantastic. The biggest intrusion that they serve on our time are the meetings that I have with artists wherein we enthusiastically flail at each other until we've arrived at a mutual understanding on topics like "This would be awesome to do for Halloween!" Well, it also takes QA's time to do passes on the costumes, but that's taken into account for how we schedule things.

So the short form is, we use costumes to enable us to do more. They're basically "free" in terms of the Live Team's workload - so we can either make something relevant, and integrate it into the story, or we could sell nonsequitur items, like a "Roller Derby Rurik" costume. Actually, that's not a very good counter-argument for the point that I'm trying to make, because that would actually be sort of awesome. Moving on!

For content creation, that was one of the things that we discussed more heavily at PAX. One of the examples that I gave was that Winds of Change has been in production since December of last year. Over that course of time, we planned out the entire story before we began work on it - that way we could make sure that everything was working toward and seeding a conclusion that felt strong, instead of meandering. Then came the fact checking, poking holes in the plot, making revisions... in the absolute earliest version of the story, the primary antagonist was referred to as "Copernicus." Because really, that's just an amazing name for a villain. True story.

Once a story is all hammered out, actual production consists of a couple of different steps. First, the story is broken down into individual steps, which are shaped into quests. These quests are written up into design documents, which is also when the first pass of all of the associated text is written. That text will eventually be sent off to editing, while the spawner (in this case: Andrew) will begin scripting the quest. I wasn't joking at the panel when I said we work in Notepad.

Actual scripting involves placing all of the associated NPCs, enemies, Triggers, Tripwires, scripts, dialogue, and actions into the world. All of that, when complete, is handed off to our programmer (Joe) to make it actually work. In an anatomical sense, scripting is the skeleton, coding is the muscles. And the two will work closely to make something function. Or unbreak things. Or break things. Or break things in an awesome way. I would give more insight into the programming side of things, but I don't have Joe's ninja-like comprehension of languages such as PBASIC and C#Minor or whatever it is that people are using nowadays. We do still call things with IF A$ = "Y", right?

QA gets to look at things after that, and find all of the various ways in which things have gone wrong, and set about making them right. This involves a lot of ribbing between QA and Design / Programming. It is, however, all in good fun. So far, there have been no casualties as a result of standard work operations. None that we are willing to report so openly or brazenly, at least.

It sounds fairly straightforward on paper, but it can be more time consuming than you'd think in practice. I'd really encourage people to give it a try themselves to get a feel for it. Obviously it wouldn't be scripting anything for Guild Wars, but there are several editors or programs out there that you can check out for making games (such as Scirra Construct, or GameMaker.) Giving it a try will really help get you into the mindset of all of the various details and requirements there are for making something work.

Even if you don't try actual game creation, give it a shot with just a normal story! What's the story, who are the characters, how is the story told, what happens from moment to moment, what is needed to make each individual step happen? What are the enemies you are fighting, what skills do they use, what is the composition of their group, how often do you fight, how far do you travel? Almost everything begins with a Trigger: something sets it, and something (or things) reacts to it. Every time you want something to occur, you probably need one of these, and to tell everything how to respond.

I think you'll find it can be a rewarding process, and will give you more insight into how we actually work. There's a lot of incorrect information that exists on the forums that people get angry over: "Why are they working on this when they should be doing this!?" when things are not actually that simple or convenient. I wish it were! However, we have to work with the resources that we have. I feel like it had more impact at PAX to be able to see the entirety of our team sitting there (all 6 of us.) We do a lot with what we can, and I am damn proud of my team for what they're capable of. We've put out some major stuff over the course of this year, and it isn't even done yet.

I understand that some people will always be upset that the things that we are doing are not the things that they want us to be doing. But that's not a reason to belittle or invalidate the hard work of people that love this game, and love doing what they do. We try to treat people with respect and fairness, and I think it's a courtesy to at least afford us some level of respect in return. Guild Wars is a great game - I've been having fun with it since 2004, and I honestly still love getting in game, even if it's just to chat about random nonsense (whether as a GM or otherwise...) with people, and I have fun with it. I understand that people love the game just as much, and it's that love of it that gives them such strong opinions about it. I really appreciate that people care that much, it's fantastic that they're so deeply invested. But just remember, at the end of the day, videogames are about having fun. If something in that game is enough to make you unhappy enough to assault others on forums, or even people that you don't know: then it's time to step back and take a breather. It's just a game, and life is too short to be spent harboring negativity. Things get better with a little time and distance: trust me, I've been there and done that with other games that I have enjoyed.

Which brings me back to the real point of things: Halloween is the best of all holidays, and Mad King Thorn jokes are ALWAYS HILARIOUS. What could be more fun than the terrible, terrible jokes that lie in wait?

Considering their limited numbers on the live team, I think they have done quite well.

I agree, it's rare to see games with this kind of longevity that still have new content being rolled out; Especially FREE content (WoC)!!

im not griping, just stating my opinion:

Personally, I could care less about new content. I haven't even played WoC yet, and have only done WiK for oppressor weapons for my HoM. I don't doubt that the new content is good, but I'll hold off giving the live team a pat on the back until I see something that I actually care abou (Skill updates!)

Thanks, Live Team!

I haven't had the chance to finish the second part of WoC yet, but what I've seen, I've enjoyed. It's certainly a massive improvement over the first part. (Though . . . could the NPCs please stop treating native Canthan characters as if they're foreigners? It's a little odd.) I look forward to when I'll have the chance to finish part 2 up.

Thanks for saying you'll look into helping the ele out in hard mode. They definitely need it, and it's great to know they'll be looked at.

Thanks for all the little bug fixes. A lot of people gripe about how you do those updates instead of whatever they want, but I for one appreciate the extra polish the fixes give the game.

Thanks for updating the Tyrian/Elonian festivals each year with new material, especially Halloween. I loved the dialogue for last year's quests. I look forward to see what's new with for this Halloween, and I hope next year, the Canthan festivals will get the same attention.

A thanks for me too. ^^ The game's great. Put thousands upon thousands of hours into it. Can't say much more than that - I don't believe there's been any other game, at all, that I've played as much of.

@Lanier - seems to be missing the point of a significant chunk of the game. Isn't part of it RPG? <_<

Can only agree. Did all of WiK, got bored very early in Cantha. Skill update is far more needed, especially for ranger (dead profession) and if ever there should be new content the one thing everyone asked for from day one was never delivered. The other god realms, six+ years on and they will never exist, that's a shame. A real shame.

I appreciate taht theyre working hard and all that. but imo, they're working on the wrong things. i know, they're putting all there resources into GW2, but if it doesnt come out soon this game will be even deader than it is already, and that wont do them any good. especially since theyre gonna be competing with diablo 3, and blizzard actually listens to the community. WoC was awful, it was more go here, kill a, collect reward repeat, which is exactly what they said they wanted to avoid.
they might want to put a little bit of effort into listening to feedback for the last few months of gw if they want to keep us all.

Umm... Dervish? If they weren't busy with other things we'd already have the Ele updates as well. Patience is a... hows that saying go again?

They have to bridge the gap between gw1 and 2 lore wise so it takes priority...

Considering the age of the game, and the small number of people still working on GW1, I'm very happy with what we are getting....new stuff for the Mad King's annual visit always puts a smile on my face, in particular. If I had any criticism it would be about the quality of the costumes recently....GW is a beautiful game and I like having anti-aliasing running, but I don't like seeing the white pixels along the edges of the costumes when AA is selected. I'd be happy to buy the costumes if the AA was fixed on them.

Does anyone know if the new challenge mission will be permanent, or just a Halloween event?

This is asking you to say thankyou not to state your opinion on how you think they haven't done what you personally want, everyone is different and has different ideas on what is important.

So if you can't be bothered/mature enough to say something nice, like thankyou, don't bother posting. We don't care what you think, we're saying thanks.

Yeah the game is really old so its very difficult to add features at this stage so asking new areas (especially to a team with out an artist) is kind of mad. I have been happy with the content and haven't really seen another game where the Live Team is so involved with the community. Thanks for everything, I don't mind even spending the odd bit of money on a costume, you deserve it for keeping me entertained this long.

Yes, thank you Anet for creating a (still) beautiful looking game that's mananged to keep me interested for the past six years (or maybe I shouldn't say thank you, as this has also kept me from playing other games that I want to play but are currently gathering dust on my shelves instead )

Keep up the good work, looking forward to GW2.

Big thank you from me as well.

I should also point out that making a game is very much like writing a novel, something I have done more then once. People often forget that simple rule that for every action there must be a reaction. Making a story work in a game or a book is very much a series of actions/reactions that continue to build until you reach the climax. This holds true for more then just "actions" but as well for conversations and movements. Understanding both how and why characters travel from one location to another can be a massive undertaking sometimes. I think in GW you have done extremely well in regards to the story and the gameplay reflects that as well.

Fantastic work, please keep it up!

THANK YOU! for your effort. Six people is really a small number, and yet we're still getting profession fixes and new content.

I agree the first part of WoC was a bit monotonous, but from what I've heard, the second seems much better. Why haven't I played it more yet? Because I'm an Elementalist, and I'm bored of using SoS rit or AP+PvE skill bars. As you guys have plans for an update, I've decided to wait because I want my gameplay experience to be as refreshing as possible, and playing new content with "new" skills seems mighty exciting for me! and for a six years old game. Even if it means I'll have to wait until the final chapter of WoC is up (I suppose), I don't mind.

Thank you, Live Team.

In fact, video games use MORE lines of dialogue than a novel!

A mere gameboy game such as Pokemon Card GB2 uses about 11173 lines of dialogue (I should know since I'm making contributions to translate it.)

Guild Wars on the other hand... Let's just say I feel bad for translators. There must be a TON of work involved! GW probably uses about 90000 lines of dialogue.

However, it would be interesting to know where the ele's update is placed on the schedule. Is it being done at the same as WoC? We haven't got skill updates at all in the last months, so does that means the eles are already being worked on? Anyways, that's getting off-topic.

Thank you again. I'm gonna log on to play Costume Brawl now, which I must say, it's so good I'm surprised it's not treated more seriously in-game.

Don't talk condescendingly to me about maturity. Of course I am greatful for what the GW1 team has done. I was very mature in my previous post and I said nothing negative toward them. I hardly think that kissing their boots is a requirement to posting in this thread, however.

So this is what I have to say to you GW1 team: I thank you for the work that you have done so far on content, and I am sure that those who played it enjoyed it very much. I also hope to see a skill update soon.

We all have a grumble and moan at aspects of GW at times, however what some of us forget, is that if we didn't still care so much, we would never say diddly squat about anything.

Kudos to all those who have been part of GW for all these years: many said the economic model would not work, well it has, and rather well too.

I am still surprised the coders can afford to spend time at all fixing things here and there, not to mention the extra content now and then.

Congratulations for all the good work over such a long time.

Finally getting jaded with GW nearing 6th gwamm and 2 x 50/50. Had a greaty time with the game and thanks to the people that put it together and fed me with free content over the last 6 years - much appreciated, even if you never killed off Shadowform as I would have liked . Soon I will take up Skyrim and use that to fill the void up until GW2. See you all again when that gets an eventual release date.

In a world of two faced developers and filthy publishers, ANET shines with a fair marketing strategy and great content.
