Oh noes! How dare players get hats!?
Seriously? You're CONCERNED about a snowball effect of allowing people playing a game to get an item with no actual value? What's the worst thing that could happen by just giving every account free access to all hats? Oh that's right... NOTHING. People who missed out on Spectercles or the Rudi Mask will obviously wear them and somehow master PvP instantly, or shave ten minutes off the UWSC record, that has to be your worry right? Or maybe you're TERRIFIED of enterprising players cornering the hat market and ramping up the price in ectos? Oh wait, hats are non-tradeable. I guess I'm just having a tough time seeing what all the consternation is over giving something that doesn't affect gameplay to the people that play the game? |

My only beef with it, in addition to the point cormac made about people needing to learn that crying wont solve all of their problems, is that they're wasting time on something that, as you pointed out, doesn't effect the game. They shouldn't be wasting time on festival hats for a small % of the community who didn't get them and will wear them what, maybe once? They should be focusing on GW2 or the upcoming wintersday event... the time could just be much better spent.
|
Besides, the guys working on GW1 content are not simultaneously tasked to GW2, that would be a terrible waste of resources.
As for it being "crying" well, that's again a question of perception. People against it perceive it as crying, people for it perceive it as constructive criticism.
And as history has shown, and ANet's actions to wit, those who voice their concerns quite often get rewarded. Look at 7 heroes, Mercenaries, etc.
Regarding others in this thread, there's a point at which negative nancying everything just looks ridiculous. This is a game we're talking about, thats supposed to be fun for all. If cormac and others get enjoyment out of continually denying others their idea of fun, well that's their problem. And whats worse is the verbose arguing against something that won't upset game balance at all, so again, I ask why not allow it?

I don't really get this. If it's for people who missed the even then they aren't very likely going to have 50 Pumpkin Cookies or Candy Corn? And I don't really get why they've only added this feature for this years h'ween event? Idk. A-nets stupidity isn't really a surprise to me these days. So whatever.

Ugh. Forget the hats! The idea that ANet's policies should key on concepts like, "teaching people they can't always get what they want," or "teaching people crying won't solve your problems," disturbs and frightens me.
GW was advertised as entertainment, and that's why I bought it. ANet's goal is to provide a fun game to their customers. If their goal shifts to providing a pulpit from which morality and life lessons are handed down, I'm unlikely to keep playing.
There are video games designed to help families teach their children such concepts, sure! GW didn't start as such a game nor was it advertised as such a game. To make it such now would be a crappy thing to do to every player who did not sign up for the sermon in the first place.
The tone of some of the comments in this thread make me very glad we're not the ones making final decisions! The next time you think ANet should do <something or other> for a reason like <teaching these dang kids a lesson!> please stop and think what you'd be asking them to foist on all of us!

So it kinda makes sense that this is implemented in way that is very unfriendly to people who missed event. "You'd better get yer ass online next time!"

On more serious note, yep, it is kind of WTF.
Anet did it again: Fix one thing by introducing brand new problem that while being much smaller is still iritating.
When will they learn that it is not good idea to convert unobtainable item to currency? It is not as if we need sweetssink or anything or that people needed any more incentive or reward for hoard pretty much anything and everything.

Luckily I got my hats, cuz' all my halloween items are long since consumed or given away. :S
I just hope they finally make hat NPC's after EVERY festival from now on. Saves us a lot of complaint threads.
Good job anet

Good Looks by Anet! One of the few good things that has come out of the 2 10 day power outages i went through in the last 2 months (yes thats 20 days with no power, water or heat...).
To the rest of you that are complaining that your not getting something from Anet b/c you already were able to get the hats and its not fair, I have a fridge full of spoiled food you are welcome to.

As for the "Anet should stop succumbing to people's complaints" argument, the community always finds something to moan and cry about and in my opinion Anet has conducted a pretty wise policy in that respect.
People moaned about the elite perfect item market and Anet introduced Greens. People continued moaning about how hard it is to obtain those greens and that the stats were set in stone. Anet introduced inscriptions.
Now people complain about how Anet makes things too easy, turned the market to crap and caters to the lazy masses.
I think the game is still very healthy in most respects and they could have done much worse. This Festival Hat NPC is a generous gesture which shows that the developers can be flexible and adjust their policy to external shocks.

You went 20 days without power, water or heat? Did you and your neighbours riot or attempt to fix it instead of sitting on your butts?

They should riot the power companies because the weather snapped power lines? Or, better yet, try to fix the damaged power lines (that may still be charged) when most of the community would have no experience of installing power lines in the first place? Most people would have the common sense to let the companies fix the problem with the power outage (who know what they're doing), and instead focus on basic survival.
This was good PR for Anet: they look good in the eyes of the players, people get their hats if they missed them, and others sold cons for an inflated price.

It's annoying as a non-American to see something like this has been implemented to reward the whinging from a select few. The people affected were by FAR not a majority of players and this type of goodwill hasn't been replicated for the international community as others have mentioned; oh you had a blackout for 3 days? BOO HOO. People in Europe, Asia and Australia have been DYING in internationally recognized natural disasters that make this pity party from the Eastern US look like the proverbial "first world problems".
2 states in Eastern Australia were decimated by flooding that was legitimately marked Worldwide as a natural disaster during new Year festival this year with thousands of families losing their homes and people dying; An entire Island of Japan was decimated by an Earthquake and a Tsunami. Turkey has been horrifically unlucky enough to suffer two Earthquakes this year. Eastern Europe has suffered dramatic floods too...where was their do-over based on the natural event that had nothing to do with ANet?
Where was their 50-item a pop goodwill? When they eventually got power connected again (BTW some of them still don't even have homes again...) they didn't get on the forums and complain that they should be given a chance to take part in something they missed out on.
It's a really self-absorbed, self-entitled egocentric attitude like this that gives the USA such a bad reputation in the rest of the world. Congrats, whiners.

To be fair, I think if somewhere was suffering an actual disaster, I think asking for a 'hat' would be one of the last things on their mind. Comparing something that actually causes death to something as trivial as a power cut is pretty ridiculous.
I just don't see how there is any issue with letting people get a hat? I mean, it doesn't even mean anything. It doesn't give you any advantage in the game. I rarely see anyone wearing any kind of 'hat' more than a week after the event.
The amount of people getting worked up about something so small, and relatively pointless at this point in the game, just shows how childish and petty some people really are.
It's a hat. Deal with it.

Actually, I think my problem is the sniveling that most people do when the world doesn't change around them, my suggestion is get over yourselves, seems you fit the bill. Its akin to saying "I didn't win the lottery, true i didn't play, but they should give me the money anyway.". Whatever makes people feel as though they deserve everything that everyone else has is getting quite old at this point. I missed quite a few hats. Would I have liked to have them? Sure. Did I complain because real life happens, whine that I should have them? Pout when I didn't get my way? Nope

Aside from that. It's nice gesture that in the end doesn't waste all that many resources to put a lone NPC offering a lone item in an outpost. I think the gesture of completely revamping LDoA and LS took way more resources and amounts to pretty much the same thing.
Regardless, the simplest way to get around this kind of issue is just to offer credits or tokens in the game store. Much like one can buy makeover credits, these new credits can be used to purchase in-game vanity items, like the festival hats, pre-order bonus items, or what have you. That way those who want them can purchase them, just like the costumes, and those that don't are not affected in the slightest.

I think this is a nice gesture on behalf of ANet for a group of users who were disadvantaged due to no fault of there own. There is no game play advantage to be had by this change.

I can't believe so many people will QQ over something so insignificant... They obviously got enough support tickets from people that they felt like they should so something about it.... period.... lol @ international discrimination.... of course they are not going to do this for every natural disaster that falls on a holiday... they did this because enough people complained.... they are not going to make more work for themselves if nobody demands it.
next time you see a downed power line in a blizzard... go pick it up and fix it and report back to us with the results...

Who puts powerlines above ground in a place that gets blizzards (or tropical storms for that matter)? It's just asking for trouble. The result should have been obvious.

well i guess that just shows how little you know about the situation... this happened in a alot of places that never see snow.... especially large amounts of it.... that combined with high winds and some rain... leaves people unable to riot or fix things.
