Woman gamers?

I came across an interesting article published in 2004 on the microsoft website that states "women now account for 43% of all computer gamers."
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...eningames.mspx

I thought that this is a profound statement & a startling amount - no woman I know would ever consider playing computer games. Nice to see that there are some out there though!

So I was just wondering how many players of GW are woman?

One thing to note though and a joke I always find funny (until they hear me on teamspeak and all like freakout )

Online gaming...
where men are men,
the women are men,
and anyone under 18 is a Federal Agent

I think you'll find a larger segment of the GW population than in the RTS or FPS genres. Women love MMORPGs; they love the social aspect of it. GW allows them to group and be part of a guild.

But the landscape has changed, and according to the Interactive Digital Software Association (IDSA) women now account for 43% of all computer gamers. It must also be noted that half of all game purchases are made by women.
I guess they didn't exclude all the moms that buy Mature rated games for their sons.

Statistics are worthless in percentage. I rather see an actual ratio on how big their sampling was.

I'm happy that the ratio of male to female has improved. Very happy indeed. At least I hope "she" was "female."

Um.. my girlfriend is a female, and she plays GW.
Oh, by the way. Youll find a significant increase of women in these sort of games then in say, First person shooters. As for women players skills? Heh, my girlfriend has been playing an elementalist since E3, and she had no idea about energy storage or what it does lmao..

When they say online games they are probably including chess, gambling and games along those lines too. Granted I think it's great that there are more female gamers. We can't have all the fun. I do believe the 43% number is a little skewed.

Darn right im female. We're slowly taking over the gaming world And i have a few female friends who also game (none as much as me though )

Lets see what kinda games I like:
PC - RPG, Strategy, some Sim-type stuff, Black and White (kinda its own genre :P), Adventure
Xbox - Halo, GTA 3/Vice City, Fable

And I used to play Amiga 1200 and Spectrum ZX as a kid... so I'm into quite a lot of types of games... :P

I'm female and I play games. I can't play the FPS's because I get motion sickness. I even get sick watching someone else play. BTW, both my daughters like to play games, too.

Another female gamer here. Been gaming since I was a wee lass, began online gaming since the days of Diablo 2 and Ragnarok Online beta.

I'm older than 18 years old and for almost a year I have been playing a specific online game that doesn't allow players under 18, so I will have to get used to the "kiddies" here.

The only FPS I can play is Halo, but it still gives me motion sickness, but it's just that fun

I too am happy to see an increase of women playing online games, and believe it or not, it isn't just this sort of game. I help run a gaming clan for Day of Defeat, a Half-Life mod, and we've got many female regulars on our server, new ones coming in every other week, and several female clan members as well.

It's a little weird in this game though, it's difficult to tell sometimes if it's actually a woman or if it's some guy who made a female character so he could watch his elementist dance.

Cheers to women and online gaming for all.

I'm a femme gamer, my dad calls me a geek but I don't care.

I have yet to see alot of girls playing guys on games, but what is with this trend of guys playing as girls? o_o;

EDIT/PS: Out of eight members in our guild, only two of us are female... its a bit daunting, I want more female members to balance it out, but I don't want to seem sexist either...

I believe when they are qualifying free online games, such as flash games in their study. I honestly don't think woman make up 43% of the retail game community. 43% sounds like a fair estimate if you include all types of non-retail games in your research as well.

My fiancee and I have played video games together since we started dating, and got through Diablo 2 Nightmare together. Then we bought a house and life went insane and didn't play for a few years (plus we both suffer somewhat from simulator sickness, and all the isometrics have gone bye-bye).

But I'm happy to say we've both purchased accounts on GW and are playing again. I've got about two weeks on her, but she's starting to catch up. Her warrior kicks butt. We squabble over who gets to play on the widescreen tv...

And I know a TON of women who play Yahoo games. If that's included in the 43%, I totally believe it.

lol well i work in a game shop and i know plenty of regulars that ARE female and that ARE buying for themselves. The thing is with online games you don't often disclose who you are. Why?

1. There's no point. The point in a game is to immerse yourself as your character, not you. If you want to find out about an actual person, go on msn
2. You only have to mention you're female to half the guys on the net and immediately "what you look like? send a pic!"... and those are the restrained ones. There are some nightmarish people out there :P

It doesn't seem weird to me coz (apart from obviously beinga female gamer ) a lot of the games I play online/am active on forums of, do have a lot of women. Black and White, Diablo 2, Ultima Online and especially Sacred. There are tons of women on Sacred.

I'm a female gamer, and my mother, aunt, and cousin (female) are all gamers as well. Actually, so are most of my female friends. It annoys me when people and the media think there are so few female gamers; there are a lot more than you might think, you just have to know where to find us.

EDIT: Oh, and for any of you who think that women only like certain types of games or aren't very good at games, think again. I know girls who play all types of games, and have varying levels of skill in different games. It has nothing to do with being female; people, both male and female, have different tastes and different skills. So meh.

I am also a female gamer, I actually got my husband into online gaming rather then just random offline games. I have been a gamer since I was a baby, my dad bought a tsr-80 and I was playing it back when I was 2 or 3. I haven't quit playing computer games since.

My gaming group/guild has about half a dozen females, still a lot more males in it then females, but we definately have a number of females that play. In fact the ratio of females to males playing online games is a lot better then the ratio in most of my math classes where I am one of three females .

A lot of females play, but most of us don't make a big deal about the fact that we do play so a lot of people dont' realize how many females actually are playing various online games.

That's true enough, a lot of women I know intentionally just try to not make a big deal about anything so they don't attract attention to themselves, because in some games whenever someone hears there's a female in-game, every pimple-poppin' piss ant around goes and either decides to toss about some...unnecessary comments, just you know, they get too much attention. I know a few girls who actually play as guy characters in other RPGs where females aren't that common simply because they don't get as much attention that way and it allows them to play the game.

I don't honestly care who you are where you're from or what your gender is, if you're a fun person to play with you're a fun person to play with. So long as you contrast the "lol n00b u blo" crowd, you're fine with me.

I agree, I actually used to play male characters in Anarchy Online for a very long time. Then one day I thought to hell with it and started a female toon... oh lordy. I actually never thought I would hear the line "So do you look like your character in real life"?
I sure didn't get that one when I was playing an Atrox

A couple of my friends play male characters online a lot for that exact reason.

Frankly the genders of people I play with on guild wars is neither here nor there for me. Guild wars is not some kind of dating service, and it is not like playing with a chick on GW on a regular basis will lead to some kind of hot, steamy, deliciously scandilous online relationship with plenty of "cybering" and webcams.

but just in case anyone is looking for that kinda jazz, the in game name is dr no baby :P.

Anyhow, on topic...

I could see this percentage including free online card games and similar ideas such as poker, crib, hearts, etc. My friends mother is just hooked on cardplayer poker and plays nothing else. I could also see how the MMO's could appeal to the female croud a bit more, in the way they look and the nature of the social interaction (so to speak). I get a laugh outta how many get motion sickness...

Funny story regarding this kinda jazz. A lady I knew who was kinda into a few games (FF7, metal gear solid, rpg ish jazz I guess) was watching me play halo online and decided she wanted to exhibit the same proficient killing skills that I was flaunting. Let me tell you what ensued was possibly the most painful experience of my life. I thought at first that this could be good... but I was horribly wrong. For a week she came over every night for what seemed to be like a sad basic training online and by the end she could barely control the game, let alone score ANY kills. I had enough and cut this little desire off as quick as possible.

lol, get al oad of mr. big post.

I just enjoy diversity, I play games in my spare time for fun, get home and open up a game, that's how it goes.

Something though about your Halo story, several of the women I know who play the Half-Life mods are, insanely good. Especially mothers, if you ever find a mother who plays Day of Defeat, holy crap I've never been murdered so much by an mp40 in all my years of that game.

Obscenities and drinks all around, Lets have some fun playin' PC games. *passes out*

There was a girl in my class who was unnaturally skilled at Halo... She could take down any other guy she played without even batting an eyelash (except me but I don't count) and never got tired of bringing it up in conversation. And interestingly enough, in 2 years of playing online the only person who ever gave me a run for my money in Jedi Academy was a girl. She had some real talent, part of me almost wanted to let her win.

Yet at the same time a girlfriend once asked me to teach her to play Mechwarrior, and it was equally disastrous. Some people just haven't got the touch.

So what have we learned? You can't base your expectations about someone on their gender. Oh, what a surprise.

I've noticed the motion sickness thing mentioned here a couple of times, and I have to agree that it's why I don't play FPS. I refuse to admit how long I've been playing computer games. How ever I do fondly remember ADV, although I'd still like to strangle that Dwarf.
