NEWS FLASH! Monks on strike at Thunderhead Keep
Former Ruling
Funny thing people are skipping over:
The whole thing was just in good fun. It really didn't do anything to the game. Thats why the Devs had alittle fun with it.
The same number of Monks were avialable for the mission PUGs that had always been there. All the "Strike" did was pull alot of monks out of the UW or Augury Rock and bring them to THK for a Dace Party.
Why did it not do anything? None of the monks striking were actually monks that are at that point in the game. You heard it in this thread alone - 99% of the strike was monks that said "Wow, I never do mission except to help to guildies, but what the hay, I'll go and have alittle fun" - so they flocked to THK and had Dance partys, monk groups, and Random Quitting for fun (is always a problem, not linked to this strike).
So theres nothing to get uptight about.

They won't listen to you Former.... I tried before. Funny thing is, THK is full of the same old, "Group looking for Monks!" Only they're still not finding a whole lot of them.
Pro-Monk
Ok, most decent Monks stick with their guilds, so PUG's get to be healed by the same ilk of Monk that makes up the rest of the PUG (rude noobies mostly). So, PUG's being what they are, they take out their overall failure on the most likely candidate, the Monk. Very few primary Monks in a guild would be caught dead in a PUG. Only takes a couple of experiences to know why PUG's are to be avoided at all costs.
I agree, there are probably just as many rude noobie PUG Monks to join PUG's as there ever was, so this is only an expression by Monks as a class to vocalize their distain about how PUG's treat Monks overall. BTW, as a primary Monk, I can't go anywhere without PUG's trying to get me to join some mission or quest. Quite annoying, though it just goes to show that Monks will always be in high demand by PUG's.

I still firmly believe that 99% of players are in a guild in guild wars, so if you are in a guild that does not offer to help you with thunderhead keep OR the guild does not even have one member with a monk or has like 80 members and 2 of them have monks.....maybe you should find a new guild.
I mainly monk and I thought the idea of this was funny as hell, I joined in for an hour, it seems to be going away. Was a good laugh, anyone who has ever even tried monking knows what the monks were honestly on strike about.

I come back from a two week break and the moment I load in I recieve a whisper from a friend stating, "Hey the monks are on strike in Thunderhead." I am thinking, "What the hell? Why?" I go to Thunderhead and I wind up reading things about all monk groups, monks bashing other classes, and warriors defending themselves. Not like I have any problems or "grudges" against certain classes but as many posters in this thread have stated: "This is f***ing ridiculous." I agree with them.
I suggest to those players on strike to either: play something else or go out for a walk if the day is nice.

I really wish I could join them. I really don't have a monk and will never make one (it's just not my thing, I'm more of a fighter type and will always be,) but, the bargers and such are just driving me INSANE. I repeatedly say I'd like just a few moments before attacking a new group to finish recharging skills, regain MP, etc, but, the bargers are way up there with or without the group. They just don't even care. It's like there's some kind of mindset that comes with the warrior primary class where all that virtual adrenaline gets to the head of the real player. Just once, I'd like to be able to slow down a moment, discuss how to take the next section, which groups to concentrate on first, who does what, etc. Maybe it's a bit much to ask, but, I can't help but to have noticed a lot of missions and quests, or even just walking through some game area would have been 500x easier and a lot less DP if they had just slowed down for a moment and split up the enemies rather than aggroing the whole group at once. You wouldn't believe how many times I've died just because I wasn't doing my best due to trying to move as quickly as possible just to keep up. Playing with henches sucks, but, sometimes I have to go back and do it just so I can take my time and use a little strategy on a mission instead of always trying to keep up and rarely even getting long enough at a time to actually join the fight.
Everyone laughs at the monks on strike, but, frankly, I hope they get enough attention one way or the other to make a change. Even if they just cut down the number of bargers by a little it would all be worth every minute of it. But, darn it, I want to be able to put a little strategy into the game. It's an RPG/hack & slash hybrid (I don't give a crap how many people say it's an RPG, true RPG is something more like Neverwinter Nights than Diablo,) not a shooter game or something.
Keep going monks. People may be laughing, it may seem a joke, but, if it gets ANY attention on the insanity that bargers bring, it will be worth it. And to those saying things like that it's just a game, remember that the point of a game is to have fun, and it sucks when you've spent money on something and others ruin the fun you should be having.

I'm rather surprised at how serious some people took this. Did anyone think that the "monks" would actually strike seriously. It was a role playing / house party / improve event that caught on.
And if you do find a monk on strike (I have yet to see one other then the TK1 party) if there in a town, you won't know it. They won't send the invite to join you.
I went there is it was so fun to hang out and yell out no more bad aggro's or no more spaming your dead during a fight as break. Today been missions, helping non-guild friends do stuff.
The W/mo runners where yelling back to charge all runners double to monks which I have yet to also see. It was an steam release / party people... and a make the common abuse monks get and why more out there.

I play both a monk and a tank with Frenzy and Healing Signet. Frenzy is one of the best ways to deal fast damage, and as long as you aren't taking too much damage, is safe to use. Everyone seems scared by the -40 armor from Healing Signet, but the majority of the time, it doesn't have much of an affect, unless you try to use it while being attacked by more than 2 enemies, which is stupid.
Why would your party be on different sides of the map? This is clearly either an exaggeration or poor teamwork, not anything to do with the skill level of the monk or tank in this scenario. |

As someone who now primarily plays as a healer monk (my nuker can never find a group anymore, there are so many now it seems to me) I'd just like to share this with everyone:
1) Pinging your health when it drops 100 HP ( as in you have 450 and it goes to 350) will not make me want to heal you. My best healing skills are the most effective when your health drops below 50%, and can almost instantly get you back to full.
2) Screaming "OMG WHERE ARE TEH HEALZ?!?!?!11" after you die doesn't help much either. I was saving someone else on the team from certain death, and sometimes I have to make priorities. I am sorry I had to let you die, but I can only cast so fast.
3) Saying "rez pls" is a pet peeve of mine. I'm quite aware that you are dead, but I'd rather keep the rest of the party alive and finish off the current mob than lose all my energy rebirthing you midfight. Just sit tight, maybe go get a drink. I'll get you back up, just give me a minute.

Whilst I believe the monks have a valid point (regarding idiot parties who over aggro and then blame the over-worked monk who cannot keep up with the uber heal needed), I also have stated in a 'discussion' in Augury that for a monk to only act as healer if paid is a travesty and wrong. Monks are part of the team and as such have a 'job' to do as an integral part of a team. Should a warrior be paid to defend the casters? Should a ranger be paid to snipe or trap? Should a mesmer be paid to shut enemy casters down? Should a necro be paid for their Wells? Should an elementalist be paid for *insert elemental damage here*?
Another part of the conversation had to do with my stating that since the majority of monks in THK (in my experience with multiple characters) has been they are either permanently afk or charge for their services so what's the difference if they're on strike (essentially, the same thing since they're 'unavailable')?
The over-eager morons who seem to believe they are invincible, over-aggro, who listen to no one, who have no concept of strategy or teamwork.....are IMO ones who also have no idea of teamwork. Let them bitch and whine and moan about the so-called n00b monks. If you're a good healer and you've done your best, why should these children's comments bother you so much?
I have a healer-curser. She has had the misfortune of being in very bad parties and the absolute joys of being in a team that worked well together. I bitch about the bad groups like everyone else, but at the end of the 'day', I remember the good groups far longer and am secure in my own healing abilities in spite of any negative comments otherwise.
My name is Cait Nic Cailleach and I am a Healer---not on strike.

Recently I introduced her 'sister' and Ascended Briallan two days ago. She most often has invites as soon as she touches down into a map! I think there is a shift to people realizing that mesmer are caster-shut-down experts (my best guess) and maybe if there are enough of us good enough at it, we'll finally get a little PvE respect.

I think it is very sad when other monks feel that they need to go on strike in a leisure game. The upside was my monk got to do lots of oro runs in and FOW lol all the teams wanted me to join lol
I made 20k that day and was able to got my new Icy dragon sword for my war Lady of pity.

Dumbest thing ever, buying a game to "Strike" Seriously the only way to describe it would be to say they are "#$%#@$% #$ %$## @ dumb #@$#$^$ % %$."
Not that i care, their prob, not mine. I have a monk i can roll

You have that backwards. They didnt buy the game to strike, they strike because they bought the game.
Arcanis the Omnipotent
actually they were striking because they felt they were being treated unfairly.
Every class is treated unfairly, so joking or not, its the same for everyone.
Oh well, I think all this has been covered, and its a dead topic *shoots topic*

i was soing thk last night getting two guildies thru it. i was acting as support healer to the monk. that monk left as soon as he had capped word of healing from borlis hillshaker (monk boss before you even get into the keep!)
that sort of thing is exactly why monks get a bad name! if you're a monk either live with it or do something about it!

Cool, a need for strike in a virtual environment. Some people really don't have any other problems. Cheers to them.
It never affected my Monk, it's just a matter on how to take people's "aggro", but hey, why would you care? Bring on the Griffons and Aatxes! That's your main purpose to stay in the game after all.

are they still stricking? When it first started i logged on my monk and zoned to THK and saw it all but is it still going on at this moment? It annoyed me when i went to HA yesterday do to some HoH runs acouple players tried to take it there (with no success) but overall i found it funny at the time but if it's still going on then it's not so funny anymore.

I am trying not to join PUGs with my monk anymore. Generally I will only do it if I am helping someone that I know and the group needs 1 more monk. Yeah, I am pretty tired of being abused for the stupidity of others, so I play my ranger. It is a lot more fun these days.
Oddly enough yesturday I was doing the Ice Caves bonus with a PUG, and was asked to tank part way through the mission. Considering that I stated before entering the mission I was a barrage/interupt ranger I really did not appreciate it. I even had res along, there was no room for tanking skills. I had asked if others were infused before starting, some lied and said they were. There were 2 or 3 warriors along and they told me that I had to tank because I was infused. As if being infused means you take no damage from spectral agony. I think monks are great, my main character is a monk, but I have a problem with what happened next. I was given no buffing at all by the prot monk, and they were all telling me to tank. WTF!!! It isn't even the first time I have had a group do that to me. I was under the impression that Rangers are beastmasters, trappers, interuptors, or barrage not tanks. I know it can be done, but what about advance notice. I didn't share my skills before starting[mistake will be rectified], I normally do with my monk. It just all around sucked.
I can thoroughly understand a monk strike. Monks are normally blamed whenever anything goes wrong. Why should the monk be the scapegoat?

Husband and I both have healer monks (we often tag team) and we tend to go out with people we know only---if there are extra party slots, then others are invited (almost always a couple slots open). Yesterday, the first time thru Dragon's Lair was a healer's worst nightmare since no one brought or used self-heal but were very good at aggro, especially in the health degen domain. Our connection (thankfully in some ways) dropped about half way through but when we loaded back in, we quickly had another group formed with a stern admonition that everybody had better self-heal if possible! Of course, we were quite able to heal the party and no one really needed to do so, but it was nice to know that it was at least an option! This group listened when we pinged energy low (and then they tried to self heal or backed out of or waited to) aggro, when we reminded them of the egy degen domain they took it a bit slower, etc. and was an absolute pleasure to monk for.
Monks, good monks should not be the scapegoats if the party fails anymore than warriors should always be blamed for aggro nightmares. I've noticed lately, it's more likely to be over zealous eles or rangers (not trappers, mind you) or necros who run far ahead of the party and thinking they're invincible. Give any caster a "W" after their primary and a shield and they're suddenly godly (in their own minds). The game is increasingly full of people who have been run and power-leveled and who have no idea how to play their profession, especially within a group setting, monks not excluded.
On the up side of the "strike" (and actually preceeding it), monk secondaries who are willing are finding themselves more apt to explore their saintly side. Well before THK, my N/Mo acted as backup party healer and now often is the only healer a party has (Wells work wonders) as well as major health degen if a foe. Adding Well of Blood to the repetoire, she can outheal (and has) many monk primaries I have quested with! Last night, our E/Mo was backup healer and for a while, *2* eles served in that position quite well!

sad
really sad
redundant as to whether it is worth it or not
this is why i will only play with guild or henchies
as to class unfairness/respect rubbish, what about all the mesmers and necros who have difficulties getting a group? then there is the community reaction to the majority of warrior monks - which tends to be the newest of the new players - but because a minority are idiots, means the whole class is dismissed. if you cannot handle a little criticism here and there or cope with some groups being less well managed than others - stop playing a monk. The travesty is that there is an equal balance of rude, annoying monks as there are players being rude back to monks.
isnt there enough idiots in real life striking about all and sundry without ruining gameplay in a fantasy world? You think this gives you more respect? Grow up a little.

Henches are more useless than newbies sometimes, which is just frightening.

Well the thing is, some people overly rely on monks. I mean, they are there to heal and make your group stronger but there's no guarantee you won't die. It irritates me how some people rush into a battle, get killed, and blame the monk for it. Honestly, monks aren't there to babysit;you have to watch what you're doing too.
Lord Oranos
It irritates me that so many people got so pissed off at this whole fiasco. I mean, seriously, some of you need some anti-depressants or something. You are getting mad at PIXELS AND NUMBERS. Now for the most part it for fun, but of course the elitists come along and start flaming. If you didnt see the event it was monks dancing around at thk(notorious for its lack of the class), that were sick and tired of being insulted. People came. People argued. Anet solved it. The End.
P.S.: For those of you that get off to insulting others for expressing an opinion, please try to remember that not all of us are dead inside. Some people actualy like being nice to others.

Some of us aren't mad at "pixel and numbers" but the bloody stupid people behind some of those pixels who ruin the fun of the game that we paid for by doing things like just barging right into everything and aggroing anything within a 100ft radius without even so much as checking to see if their party is still there.
Lord Oranos
My post is more on the people that come here to say the worst possible thing then leave. Maybe I shouldve said greifers? My post was directed to the people that tried to ruin the fun at thk and still bitch about the strike.

Its proactive defense, not reactive.

Casters and rangers can do plenty of damage. All AoE, too, if the rangers bring Barrage as the elite.
There's a bit of contradiction in that it would be ideal if the rangers both trap and also stand in the front to draw some of the worst aggro, but that's not irreconcilable.

but yeh, i got tired of PUG groups with no monks, so i just did all hench, (no ranger) and tanked the last set of people
obastable
I always use henchies for THK. Always. At most, I'll take 2 human players (for a total of 3), but the rest are always henchmen.
Any quest or mission that I do using my Monk, I make it perfectly clear that if someone runs in and aggros, and gets themselves or someone else killed when I've clearly stated that I'm not ready to continue I will not, under any circumstances whatsoever, rez their dumb a$%.
I'll also kick an impatient person from my group (if I'm leading) or leave a group of impatient people (if I'm not leading). I've found that 99% of the time the ones who pester to "Go go go!" are the ones who end up causing a party to fail in a mission, wether you try to help them or not.. they're too impatient to listen or care.

Its proactive defense, not reactive.
Oh no, life must revolve around those who selected "Monk" as their primary profession. Same old story, same old pattern. |
