What do you expect from a Mesmer
Brutaniu Mason
^Of course you'd interrupt so well with a bar containing interrupts only...The main difficulty of interrupting is that you are not just hovering over the button waiting for the enemy to cast. Your'e shutting down, (and as a mesmer) switching targets, wanding in between, watching aggro, possibly running back, etc. etc. Stringing all of those in between drastically knocks off your concentration of interrupting 1s spells.
I experienced the very same thing with the linked "reaction time" test. There is an ad right at the top with some giant knockers and a very alluring pair of lips getting licked over by a seemingly gorgeous chica. Needless to say, I easily averaged a .21 when I scrolled down a bit to block out the hooters, and gained average scores of around .4-.6 when she was not out of sight
PvE and PvP mesmers got stuff to look at too. It may not be a beautiful broad, but it can deter your focus.

I expect them to be a mesmer
If they haven't learned how to play their profession very well by level 20, then maybe they should stick to warrior or something else.

in PvE:: I expect mesmers to soften the enemy mob they're facing and not stick to one enemy at a time.
I also expect Mesmers to set their skills to compliment the party build they're in. If you've got a couple of rangers, there's not much need for interrupts, as there will be duplication of effort, which is a waste.
Sympathetic Visage + empathy to deal with melee types (e-denial, health denial AND adrenaline denial - sweetness!)

Have a specific build, i.e. interrupts, e-denial, degen, etc. NOT a random grab-bag of spells. If you're not sure what to bring, ASK. |
Anyway... there are a lot of things mesmers are good at. It just depends on the situation or the mood you're in. And if you can do your job right, it's not an issue.

With mesmer, you can 'solo' Glint with couple henchies in no time.

I don't understand this dislike/disdain for Chaos Storm. I use it as a defensive spell when being pummeled by several monsters at once. Nothing works better at giving the squishies a break when being attacked en masse if aggro goes a little wrong and they break from the warrior(s).

All points to come are PvE related. 1) I expect the mesmer to be the last to die in any party wipe. 2) I expect the mesmer to be able to bring down any solo mob (Exceptions for bosses and megamobs like dragon lich) to rez the party. 3) I expect the mesmer to stop the most hazardous spells from striking the party (and therefore, know WHAT to interrupt from each group they fight). 4) I expect the mesmer to deal more damage than the others in the team (regarding by regen 1 energy to be 6hp, excluding ss necros and eles). 5) I expect hexes to be used on the right target. No backfires on Warriors. 6) I expect the mesmer not to need a battery every 5 seconds. 7) I expect the mesmer to know that conjure phantasm is one of the worst skills in late game. 8) I expect that the mesmer knows they are a mesmer, and use their primary class primarily. 9) I expect there to be no fastcast nuking attempts. 10) I expect none of the following spells: chaos storm, conjure phantasm, ether lord, to be used. 11) I expect mesmers to not bring these in PvE, unless they have some actually useful skills as well. 12) I expect mesmers to follow jciardha's suggestions, except for the Wastrel's worry one. Don't use that, its less efficient than flare. 13) I expect the mesmer to turn the tide on multi-monk groups. 14) I expect mesmers to have a clue about their area. Our class is the most 'mentalist,' and so long as you're on an RP char, I expect you to be smart. 15) I expect I'll never meet a mesmer that meets my expectations. |
I agree with you on pretty much everything Avarre, except Conjure Phantasm.
I still think it's a nice spell, I usually bring an illusion/dom build for general PvE areas with something like:
Ineptitude or Migrane (depends if im fightign alot of casters or melee)
Conjure Phantasm
Clumsiness
Cry of Frustration
Guilt
Open
Power Drain
Inspired Hex or Drain enchant
Res
Conjure Phantasm is nice if your fighting multiple things, while your group is attacking the main target, after I get my other spells setup, i'll tab through targets and put conjure on em. It's also good if you bring a caster hate bar for at least something against melee or any targets.
Also a good mesmer should never really stick with the called target, becuase they are most effecient for manipulating multiple targets (save for maybe Monks in pvp).
Images of Remorse is going to make Conjure Phantasm look stupid though :P
Nice reaction test, I scored a 0.193

I'm also a fan of chaos storm, in pvp especially ...
If you can manage to body block a caster, nothing says "go ahead and try to do something" like chaos storm ... damage and absurd energy drain if they cast.
Plus it's great to place on areas like flagstands, inside ward against foes, all sorts of places. People that hate it obviously haven't found it's usefulness yet

Interrupt like a crazed monkey. 1 second cast > 1/4 second interrupt + 1/4 second reflex. It makes those silly Ranger interrupts look like a speeding snail by comparison.
And don't put backfire on warriors and rangers or empathy on casters. I could still think of a few situations where you might want to but they're few and far between.

I try to do well with my mesmer, And most of the time I think I am doing Ok. I like to run a domination heavy build, lots of shatter/spike, and i use chaos storm if i get surrounded.
God Apprentice
That new car scent
lol actually i dont really want to expect from a class id rather they suprise me

Ineptitude + clumsiness vs. Frenzy warrior - need i say more?
Btw, conjure phantasm isn't a bad spell. It pretty much negates the health regeneration from 'I Will Avenge you!'

I think that Wastrel's wprry is a great skill for combos, and combos only. Backfire+Diversion+Wastrels Worry is fun(sub in Empathy for warriors), but just about for PvP only. It kinda sucks for PvE

In PvE, I expect ascended mesmers to be good players.
Case in point: Back when I was trying to get my R/Me through Iron Mines (+ skill cap, + bonus if possible), I found a group doing that was going to attempt the bonus. We tried and tried to find a monk, but couldn't. Finally, I got a whisper from a mesmer who said he'd monk for us if we could wait for him to switch his secondary. I lobbied for the group to let him in, and they reluctantly agreed to ditch Alesia for him. Everyone capped the skills they wanted, got the bonus, and finished the mission in one run, despite a rage quit.
In PvP, I just expect them to play the build that they're supposed to play... though I expect that out of everyone in the group.

I only really expect from a mesmer to make my enemies slower, annoy them and loose energy.

I love running my mez in UW and FoW. I've found personally that an Illusion/Inspiration blend works best for me in UW, while a Dom/Insp blend for FoW (heavy on the Dom). I've heard more than once that mesmers are worthless in FoW, and as soon as I do I realize that that's not a party I want to go with.
A few things I've seen over time...
Empathy on a Barrage ranger... good thing.
Clumsiness/Ineptitude on a caster... real good thing when their energy is low and they start wanding. For that matter...
Clumsiness/Ineptitude on dang near anything... good thing. You catch even a monk not paying attention and it hurts!
For the smaller groups in FoW that tend to have a Beast and a monk... everyone goes after the monk. They just do. They also never notice that noone got hexed, and the Shadow Beast is dead.
No big secret... Shatter Hex plus Energy Surge plus Warrior with the book = some of the highest amounts of quick damage in the game. Consider everything around the bookie takes over 200 armor ignoring damage in three secs... then add CoF to that and watch half a dozen critters fall on their arses.
Mesmers are fun.
