Lack OF Rpers

Has anyone noticed that there is a lack of people who rp in this game? I've there are some but I mostly find die hard beat-the-gamers as I call them. Might be just me :P

There are quite a few RPers, though not as many as I'd like. Check out the Lyssa's Fiction forum to hook up with some. Self included. Though I don't get a chance to hang out with other RPers as often as I'd like anymore.

There are few Role-Players that you will find in the general game. This is totally normal though. It's usually difficult to find those kinds of players in the public sections of any online game. These people generally are playing with other role-players who keep it very in-house. They don't participate with the public generally because it's either too annoying to deal with "Johnny Elitist" when they're just having a good time. You won't find them because they're not "running" through the missions and areas to speed to their skills.
They're the odd few that you don't see ever speaking, who simply show up, then disappear without you ever knowing it.
Most online games fall to the "elitist" crowds. I'm not saying that in a negative way, but let me give you an example of what happens in a game that has "material" to be aquired that represents wealth, and why you will be very hard pressed to find a role player amongst them:
Cheers!

I don't think he was taking the mick mate, this is just a really funny comic that takes the mickey out of all online games, especially rp'ers.

No, he wasn't saying that at all. It's just a cute comic about roleplayers in online games. (The link is working for me...)
I've never even considered RP'ing in GuildWars because it's just not set up to accomodate it. You'd pretty much have to turn all your channels off except for group chat, and try to ignore all the people running by you, through you, and standing in front of you.

When I RP, if I'm RPing alone (which I usually am) I try to get other people around me into it. Sometimes people play along.
Other times I get lots of whispers saying anything from "OMG ARE YOU A BOT?" and "SHUT UP" to "are u gaile?" and "lol an rper." It can be kind of a wash. So it'd be a lot more fun to RP with other people who are actually interested in RPing.

Well, if that is the case then I do apologize Sephy (having a rough morning at work and probably shouldn't be on here posting). Anyway, I think I'm suffering from RA syndrome where far too many people throw out "noob". I'll try the link again.
LOL...ok that was a good link. Made me laugh. You're right I rarely ever see any RPers in this game.

There are roleplayers - in fact my guild will be trying to start up a dedicated sessions of it. I roleplay all I can...
As for the post with the screen shot... it would be possible to do the same thing inside roleplay...
example:
Hear ye, Hear ye... I am an experienced guard looking to escort people to the great city of Lion's Arch. This dangerous journey will include multiple stops on our way through the Shiverpeaks.
[end example]
Contact me ifn' ya want to roleplay.

Its really hard to RP in this game. Too many people curse you out. :|

I'm into role-playing myself, or I should say, I'd like to rp the way you do in a classic PnP roleplaying session. But like Malveaux pointed out, it's often difficult to accomplish that in the game environment unless you're surrounded by other gamers who are totally devoted to the same idea. It is one thing I'd like to see more of in MMOs, especially since they're always called MMORPGs. It's often just about power-gaming and selling items like an in-game EBay, though, which is fine, I'm not going to say anything bad about it since it's basically part of the game now (part of every MMO, really). I'd like to see an MMO that somehow encourages you to develop your unique character the way a tradtional offline RPG does, and by that I mean shape your character's personality, experiences, relationships, etc., through the decisions you make and the adventures you go through. Not just by sounding a chime and saying "you gained a level!" You might gain experience, skill points, spells, items, equipment, whatever, but that kind of progress is largely static from a character standpoint. You get stronger, deadlier, more "cool-looking," but your character is still an undefined creation in the sense that there's no inherent distinction between a lvl 20 W/Mo and another lvl 20 W/Mo.
All of the MMOs out there, Everquest 2, WoW, DnDO, and GW are like that. I'd like to see something that brings in more of that communal, interactive, deeply personal experience that's the hallmark of PnP RP. I used to play a RP campaign with some friends back in high school and those were some of the most fun times, and I really got a great sense of satisfaction seeing the development of my Wizard, seeing how she was actually affected by the things she experienced during the story, seeing how she influenced events around her in the world and with other players. It's a microcosm of real life. I think all of you who've participated in traditional PnP RPing know what I'm talking about.
Anyway, sorry for the long post. Those are just my observations. And please don't take them to mean I dislike MMOs or GW in particular. GW is awesome and I love it. But like most MMOs, it is what it is. Just because we might wish for something more doesn't mean we aren't happy with what we have.
Hope that all made sense. lol

this game is not for ropeplaying. Of course you are welcome to shove the square peg through the round hole if you like. That is the reason you don't find many RP'ers here, its because if they are here they are lost. Go get WoW or any number of other MMORPG's where there is nothing but grind and you have to roleplay to make it seem like a game and not work. This game is about competition, its supposed to be about PvP competition but some people take PvE too far. The 'Stroy' part of this game is a joke, its super easy and extremely dumb, no offense to you if you do enjoy it, but that is waht the majority of the people who play this game for competition think. The PvE was an introduction to the skills so you could have an easier transition into PvP.
honestly go get a RPG that was meant for roleplaying if you want to. Although for factions they seem to be hinting at a more robust PvE experience that may be more conducive to playing PvE regularly.

This is why I love to play in low-level areas. Where lower level players aren't has hard pressed about farming or competitive trash talking and noobphobias as if I was to hang out in Augury Rock or Drognars Forge... over there, there's only Bots, Runners, Runner-finders, Elitist-pvpers, Farmers, Farmer-wannabes, and Noob-trashers.
Lower level players actually like to enjoy the game..

Sorry to say icemonkey but your wrong there. RPG = "Role Playing" Game so to be techincal yes rping is part of the game that makes each and every character unqie in thier own right you drop that then your just a strong pc running around completeing quests and selling your next crop. But I guess I'll stick with my mother's saying. "To each his own."
I sometimes have my character say. "There is no moon light nor the howls of wolves. This place lack life's touch, not even the wind blows in this dead land." Just to see what others say but I always get the same thing. "WTS IVORY BOW/ MAX DMG./ +30 HEALTH~~PM ME" lol

Even as old as it is, i'd still recommend Neverwinter Nights if you enjoy online roleplaying. Though the pre-packaged campaign is D&D-centric, the online worlds you can participate in are extremely varied.
Guild Wars suits me more at the moment because I don't have long stretches of dedicated time to commit. I like to hop online, do a quest, run through a zone, etc. and then hop off again. =)

Online RPG's and Role Playing just don't go together in my opinion. They're too restricted for my liking. Say you make a character to specifics, they can't do everything in their description of what their personality is like. You can't just walk up to a wall casually and lean against it, trying to catch your breath after a feirce duel with an enemy that was about to set the town on fire or kill an important person.
I'll stick with the text based free form thankyou.

Until we get full, 3D online Virtual Reality games where we can put on a visor, VR gloves, etc, and simulate being there and seeing our friends with us, I guess we'll have to live with what we have.

I find that to locate another role-player, simply send out an occasional:
"Who is this Charles of the Norse you speak of so fondly? One would assume such a great man would be known by many."
"I've never seen the man, but have heard him metioned from the Crystal Dessert to the Shiverpeaks."
----------OR--------------
"Why do you speak so of another man's mother? You obviously have neither honor nor the manhood required to fill a codpeice."
----------OR---------------
"I seem to have stepped in charr droppings again! Blast! Could some kind soul spare a bit of dye remover? Perhaps it will cover the smell..."
Popping off with comments a character might make signals pretty clearly your desire to role-play. I once gave a high-end shadow bow to another player for politely answering a question for me and said my guild would gladly consider him a friend. By the end of our little chat (because I never broke character) the poor fellow though I was somehow affiliated with the game..."You talk Guild Wars talk dude" I had to reassure him I was merely a lone traveller seeking loot and knowledge and that the wars between guilds was a matter best settled in areanas.
Send out the vibe...it comes back sometimes. When it doesn't, it can still be great fun!

on to a more serious note....what is the point of rping? ive never understood it.

Me and my mate did a bit of roleplaying, but it was usually just met with
"lol, wht r u doin/" or similar. It'd be cool to do a bit more.

The lack of rp in the game is kinda disheartening (nothing against the game btw, love it), but I truly don't think the environment is set up for it. As others have said, kinda hard to remain 'in character' when you're in a town with 'omg ur a NOOB', 'wts blah blah', 'glf..", you get the point. I love text based ffrp (free form roleplay) and wish there was a way to rp on here; sadly enough, I don't think there is.
Stormfall
I enjoy roleplaying quite a lot (and in fact bought this game in the hopes of finding an active RP community within it), but I have yet to actually encounter any. I've tried doing some RP-style play even without someone else at first (similar to antialias02), but that never ends well. I could have sworn ArenaNet said that they might add some content to enhance roleplaying (like items or something) way back in the summer, but nothing ever really came of that. Ah, well - I'm still holding out hope for RP districts
Contrary to an earlier (and quite constructive *cough*) assertion in the thread, Guild Wars isn't somehow set up to make roleplaying inappropriate or impossible, since roleplaying is a social activity independent of game mechanics. If someone really WANTED to, they could roleplay in games like Counter Strike. So while the Guild Wars roleplaying community may be small (or at least very, very quiet), RP isn't somehow "improper".
PS: I liked the link Good stuff.

GW is not the place to roleplay. Nor is WoW. Nor is any other typical MMO. I rp'ed in various FFRP channels on IRC for seven-eight years--I can't imagine the restrictive GW atmosphere being conducive to legitimate roleplay at all.
If you want to really roleplay, go get on IRC. Go find a MUD. Go play DnD. That's roleplaying.
Diablo???
Wow that's hardcore. I do admire those who enjoy a good text roleplay, but personally I'm a slow reader and a graphic-geek. I can enjoy guild wars (for all their limitations and shortcomings) as it is. :/

Hey, for all those who enjoy RP'ing (or would like to try it out), send me a pm sometime when I'm online and we'll see if we can meet up. If nothing else, it would be nice to meet other people with similar interests and maybe forge a friendship

Suppose your right but I will not loose hope in finding role players within the dark and dangerous world we called Guild Wars.

Just wanted to mention another thing, since I see a few people doing it. And before I do I want everyone to know it's not meant to be critical of you or put you down or anything like that, it's just a point I'd like to make about RPing...
RPing doesn't necessarily mean you have to talk in this archaic, flowery pseudo-medieval dialogue. In fact, I think the mere act of doing so puts off a lot of people who might otherwise be inclined to give RPing a shot. When I play a PnP character in a fantasy setting, I may use that kind of speech, and I may not. Usually I just keep "in tone" meaning I talk as if I am that character, but my speech might otherwise not be all that different from how people speak "IRL." I don't need to say "thee" and "thou" and "forsooth!" lol Generally my dialogue is more formal than the kind of colloquial stuff you might engage in with friends or people in your neighborhood, but it depends on more than just verbal anachronisms. It's all about staying true to the character and expressing that character's personality in a genuine way, not resorting to sometimes-stilted language.
Just my opinion.

I believe the site - www.gwrpa.org - can show you that roleplaying is very alive on Guild Wars. You may not see us, but rest assured, we're around- it's just that typically we tend to hang out in the international districts where there's significantly less traffic, so in that respect, we're a little hidden. As poorly made as Guild Wars is for roleplay (as compared to something like NeverWinter Nights), Guild Wars does have the capability to support us.
There are plenty of RP guilds out there. Currently, the RP community of guilds is attempting to organize and we're planning RP events out already.
